Greater Milwaukee Foundation announces new 'On The Table'

Staff Photo

On Thursday, July 20, 2017 the Greater Milwaukee Foundation, along with a host of participating community organizations, held a press conference to announce its latest philanthropic venture “On the Table” – an event to be held throughout Milwaukee on October 17, 2017 and described as, "a “unique opportunity to build relationships, generate ideas, and ignite action for the ben-

efit of our community and its future.” The announcement was made at the VIP outdoor rooftop patio at 88Nine Radio. The initiative works by volunteer hosts inviting a small group of people to a mealtime conversation on October 17 to discuss community issues for helping to realize the dream of making Milwaukee a world class city. Anyone can register to host, and who they invite to their table of 8-12 is entirely up to them. The Greater Milwaukee Foundation will help compile and publicize the notes submitted by the small groups. Questions can be sent via email to: onthetableMKE@greatermilwaukeefoundation.org, or by telephone to 414-376-8253. Pictured at the event are (from left) Greater Milwaukee Foundation Trinity Fellow for Civic Engagement Donald Maase; Milwaukee Rotary Club Board President JoAnne Anton; Greater Milwaukee Foundation President Ellen Gilligan; Milwaukee Muslim Women’s Coalition President and Islamic Resource Center Director Janan Najeeb; Greater Milwaukee Foundation Civic Engagement V.P. NAACP hosts Back Yard BBQ and Resource Fair

On Saturday, July 22, 2017, the Milwaukee Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) hosted a Back Yard BBQ Cookout and Resource Fair. The event took place at Johnson Park, 1919 West Fond du Lac Ave., and featured great food, give-aways, live music, spoken word artists, kids' activities and vendors. But the most helpful booths were the information booths, which offered information on job opportunities, health and safety information, education, and even urban gardening. Pictured at the cookout are NAACP president Fred Royal (center) with a number of vendors that participated in the Resource Fair.

At a “Coffee with a Cop” event on July 20 inside the McDonald’s Restaurant located at 4925 W. Hampton Ave., Milwaukee Police Chief Edward Flynn expressed concern upon returning from a short vacation to learn that the Fire and Police Commission had given him a deadline of July 27 to revise the Milwaukee Police Department’s policy on pursuit of those who commit traffic violations. Chief Flynn said the policy suggested by the Fire and Police Commission would be one of the strictest in the country and would almost surely result in more civilian deaths and injuries due to dangerous, high-speed chases. Despite his concerns, Chief Flynn said he would comply with the request to submit his report by the due date and that he remained optimistic that a mutually agreeable and safe policy could be developed. Being Frank

By: Frank James Special to the Milwaukee Times

Mother wit and common sense

Mother wit and common sense are gifts every person on the planet was born with. These are the talents and skills to help a person navigate the issues they face during life. In today’s society the use of these two gifts are rare. I am not saying people in the USA are not book smart, just a bit lacking in the common sense category. One definition of mother wit is common sense, for those who may not be familiar with the term. Mother wit is a term used by many grandparents to describe a child or person who acted or did something out of order. Common sense replaced the usage of the term with later generations. It seems that in 2017 common sense has been replaced with absurd. Using common sense or mother wit people in the USA should be able to see the causes of the problems in many communities. Drugs are a classic example of this. If you go to any inner city and wish to buy cocaine or heroin, the person selling it to you usually is Af-

rican American. If you went to the suburbs and wanted some "Molly," the seller would probably be white. Mother wit tells you that drug crimes would not exist in these areas if the people living there didn’t condone it in some form or fashion. I can hear people saying, “Wait, what are you saying?” I am saying that in every community where drugs are sold; the people living there know who the dealers are. It may be harder to pin point the dealer in the suburbs

because of the affluent surrounding. In the inner city any person with common sense can identify the drug dealer. With this common sense knowledge the community can either call the police or go vigilante and take care of the problem. This sadly almost never happens. A classic example is the condoning or blind-eye parent. This type of parent knows their child isn’t working but has an excess of clothes, money and cars. The condoning or blind-eye

parent has lost common sense. Mother wit would tell this type of parent that their child is probably doing something illegal. Maybe the parent should put them out of the house or contact the authorities. If the parent is lucky the worst thing that happens is their house gets raided. If the parent is unlucky then they wind up making funeral arrangements for the child. This same condoning blind-eye parent will go on the news crying about crime in the community. See how easily mother wit and common sense can be replaced by absurd? Maybe that scenario was far reaching to some. Here is one we all can identify with. Common sense tells a person to not wear sleepwear in

public. Yet if one goes to any store or even mall you will see people walking around in sleep clothes. Mother wit will tell a person that your house slippers were not designed for wear on concrete sidewalks. Common sense informs you that your sleep wear is not made for use in public settings. See how easily common sense is lost? These are only two examples of loss of mother wit and common sense. You can apply this to relationships, business and family. Common sense. You ever wonder if sense was common, what kind of world this would be? The Counseling Corner

By Rev. Judith T. Lester, B.Min. M.Th

What does it all mean? The symbols of our faith (Conclusion) “I am the Good Shepherd.” - John 10:11 Symbols take an ordinary word or phrase and give it a depth of meaning far beyond its importance to something extraordinary. Among the more graphic Christian symbols outlined this month includes the triangle of the Trinity; the fish, which identifies fellow believers; and the cross, which is symbolic of the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus and is the principal symbol in Christianity. These symbols represent some aspect of God’s saving presence and action in the world. In this conclusion, this writer will look at another well-known Christian symbol – the shepherd. The picture of the shepherd is deeply woven and indelibly written into the language and imagery of the Bible. Christ is the Good Shepherd. Because of the very nature of the sheep (gentle, submissive, defenseless and in constant need of guidance and care), the Bible often draws an analogy between sheep and the believer.

work as a shepherd. Yet, Jesus says confidently, “I Am the Good Shepherd.” The Good Shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. Leon Morris in his treatise on New Testament theology indicates that this immediately sets Jesus apart from the ordinary run of Palestinian shepherds. Although the life of a shepherd was very dangerous, death was always unintentional for them. But for Jesus, it was deliberate. He came to give His life for the benefit of His people. If you move quickly through the 10th chapter of John, you may easily miss the climax of Jesus’ teaching on the “Good Shepherd.” At John 10:14-15, Jesus says “I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me--just as the Father knows me and I know the Father--and I lay down my life for the sheep.” The true shepherd has a unique relationship with his sheep. In John 10:11 when Je- countryside in Biblical times. He calls them by name. He sus settled over in the land Therefore, you can imagine leads them, puts them forth of Palestine, danger lurked. that the life of a shepherd and goes before them. The Lions, wolves, jackals, pan- could be extremely precar- sheep respond by hearing his thers, leopards and hyenas ious and some shepherds voice, knowing his voice and were quite common in the perished in carrying out their following him. In modern

times, when flocks of sheep are huge, it would be foolish to speak of the individuality of a sheep. This is not true for the Palestinian shepherd and his small flock, and not so with Jesus. Although the people of God are many, His sheep knows him. He also knows each of them as an individual and He will someday be Shepherd over the united fold of all God’s redeemed -- unquestionably a precious part of salvation. UNCF presents the 33rd Annual Walk/Run for Education

On Saturday, July 22, 2017, the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) hosted their annual Walk/Run for Education at Veterans Park on the lakefront. The family friendly 5K (3.1 mile) walk and certified run is a major fundraising event for the the Milwaukee Chapter of UNCF. It has become an annual tradition with many of the corporate employees, donors, volunteers and friends who look forward to participating in it. This year's event in particular had more than 1500 registered participants. The funds from this run go to support UNCF scholarship and student support program for more than 900 students, as well as support 37 historically black colleges. Pictured at the run are (left photo, from

The top ten things every freshman needs to bring to college The good news is your kid is GOING to college. The bad news is your kid is LEAVING for college. While there may be a long list of things they WANT to buy, here is a list of the things they NEED to buy, the real dorm essentials. We have cut to the basics, the must-haves, and listed only the things that they will truly need to bring to college to have on day one. Even here there is much to consider, see below. This isn’t 1983. Plenty of stores offer free shipping if the shopping cart totals as little as $25, so resist joining the dorm shopping stampede.

Here’s one to consider If you are making a shop- that’s been recommended by ping list, here is what your Good Housekeeping that comes freshman will need to bring in a Twin XL size: AllerEase to college: Bed Bug Allergy Protection. 1. 5. Storage solutions Dorm rooms are tiny and space is at a premium. To create more room, shop for underbed storage containers to stash clothes and other items but, before buying, find out how much room there is to maximize this precious space. Buy Command Hooks for the wall to hang necklaces, baseball caps and a sweatshirt. Look for flat hangers that are indestructible and take up little room. Before you buy over the door hooks, which are incredibly useful, make sure you know the thickness of the door. 6. Mattress topper College mattresses are rock hard and your kid will be over-the-moon happy if you get them a mattress topper. From egg crates, to memory foam, to expensive featherbeds, they all do the job and will help your kid get a better night’s sleep.

7. Twin XL sheets Many stores offer sheet bundles that include a comforter plus top sheet, bottom sheet and pillow case. Each of these can all be bought as separates, as well. There is a massive range in price and quality and this is an item of personal choice. Twin XL size sheets in popular brands and colors can sell out before college starts so shop sooner rather than later, since sheets are something all freshmen need to bring to college. 8. Pillows While bed pillows are dorm essentials, many kids like having an extra pillow on their beds and these oversized square European pillow (also at every price) are ideal to lean up against the wall when they are reading, studying and watching Netflix, too. Check out this Cotton Euro Square Pillow, especially if your teen picked out a comforter that has a matching sham pillowcase. 9. First aid kit We suggest that parents find some sort of plastic container and put together a small medicine/first aid kit of what they know their kids will need. Kids get sick at 2 a.m. and it is nice to have cold or stomach remedies at hand. Make sure your kid knows what the dosage is for any meds they bring to college. 10. Towels If you have old towels around the house that can do one more tour of duty in the college dorm, by all means, use them. If you are buying new towels for your off-to-college teen, consider monogram ones. These have less chance of getting lost in the bathroom, dorm room or laundry room and may even make it through four years. Take a look at these Monogrammed Bath Linens which may be a good option for your freshman and come in lots of pretty colors, too.

Fibroids 101: What they are, what they do and how to treat them July is Uterine Fibroid Awareness Month so what better time than now to discuss uterine fibroids, what they are, what they do, and how you can treat and potentially prevent them? What are uterine fibroids? So what exactly are uterine fibroids? Uterine fibroids (aka leiomyomas) are benign (non-cancerous) tumors that come from the muscle layer of the uterus. Fibroids usually develop during the child-bearing years, with the majority of cases being diagnosed between ages 30-39. These tumors are very common and by the time a woman reaches menopause she has an 80 percent chance of having one or more. There are three types of fibroids: •Sub-serosal, which protrudes from the uterus • Intramural, which is in the muscle of the uterus. These are by far the most common type. • Submucosal, which are located in the cavity of the uterus. What causes uterine fibroids? Nobody knows for certain what causes fibroids but there are quite a few theories: Hormones: Because these tumors tend to grow when exposed to hormones, hormonal stimulation is thought to play a part in their growth and formation. Genetics: Fibroids are by far more common in African American women and they also tend to run in families. This means that genetics likely plays a role. Diet: Foods like soy that mimic hormones are thought to play a role in the development of these tumors. Obesity: Obese women produce more of a specific form of estrogen called estrone. Estrone likely stimulates their development and growth. Early menarche (onset of menses): Women who start their periods at an earlier age have more overall lifetime hormone exposure which increases their risk for fibroids. What are the symptoms of fibroids? The good news is that the great majority of women with uterine fibroids have absolutely no symptoms whatsoever. When symptoms do develop however, the most common complaints are: • Heavy periods (often with clotting) • Prolonged periods, generally lasting longer than 8 days • Spotting or bleeding between periods • Painful periods. • Pelvic pain and/or pressure. • Dyspareunia: Pain with intercourse. • Urinary frequency and leakage of urine. • Constipation.

• Recurrent miscarriages or problems conceiving. • Abdominal distension. • Back pain. • Anemia due to heavy and/or prolonged periods. How are fibroids diagnosed? Fibroids can usually be diagnosed by your OB/GYN with a simple, in-office pelvic examination. Generally however, a pelvic ultrasound will also be ordered to confirm the diagnosis. Sometimes a special type of ultrasound called a sonohysterogram, may be performed to look inside of the uterine cavity for fibroids. How do you treat fibroids? Remember, up to 80 percent of women will develop fibroids, so they only need to be treated if they are either symptomatic (see symptoms above) or if they grow rapidly. Very rarely fibroids can become cancerous, an entity known as a leiomyosarcoma, which only occurs in 1 of every 10,000 cases. There are multiple treatment options for uterine fibroids including expectant management, medical management and surgical management. 1. Expectant management is the option of doing nothing at all. If the fibroids are not causing problems, we frequently recommend expectant management since they will shrink after menopause. 2. Medical management includes all of the medications used to treat fibroids. These medications will not cure fibroids but they will reduce their symptoms while hopefully at least slowing their growth: • Oral Contraceptive Pills (OCPs) • Depo Provera: An injection given every 3 months that reduces or eliminates periods • Mirena IUD: A 5-year intrauterine contraceptive device that is also FDA approved to reduce or eliminates periods • Lupron: An injection that mimics the effect of menopause, resulting in reduction of fibroid symptoms and size. Lupron cannot be used long-term because of side effects, but it is a good medication for women close to menopause or for women considering surgery who want to reduce the size of the fibroids allowing a minimally invasive procedure. 3. Surgical management options include: • Uterine artery embolization (UAE). This is a procedure that reduces the blood supply to the uterus and fibroids, causing them to shrink in size. UAE involves making a small incision in the thigh, threading a device to the uterine artery and injecting embolic agents that block blood flow through the uter-

be removed with the uterus. Regardless of whether or not the ovaries are removed, most doctors are now removing the fallopian tubes since new research indicates that ovarian cancer may actually originate in the fallopian tubes. Hysterectomy may be performed laparoscopically (minimally invasive camera surgery with small incisions) or again by laparotomy (a larger incision, sometimes a bikini cut sometimes an up and down vertical incision). ine artery. • Endometrial ablation. This is an out-patient procedure that cauterizes (burns) the lining of the uterus. It usually takes two minutes or less and can generally be performed in any woman with irregular or heavy periods. While most women who have this procedure stop having periods, patients with fibroids frequently continue to have periods though they are usually much lighter and shorter. • RF fibroid ablation. This is a procedure that uses radiofrequency waves to reduce the size of fibroids. The procedure requires two small incisions and is done as an outpatient. Over time, they will shrink and are eventually resorbed by the body.

• Myomectomy. This involves actually removing the fibroids while leaving the uterus behind. Myomectomy is generally reserved for women who want to preserve the uterus for possible future childbearing. The biggest drawback is that new fibroids can grow after the procedure; the risk is 50/50. Myomectomy can be performed either laparoscopically (a minimally invasive camera surgery with a few small incisions) or by laparotomy (a procedure involving a larger incision, usually a bikini cut).

How do you prevent fibroids? Because we don’t know what causes fibroids, we cannot definitively tell you how to prevent them. Some things to consider include: • Exercise: Women who exercise more have been found to have fewer fibroids. • A diet low in soy: since soy mimics estrogen potentially causing fibroids to grow. • Go organic: Fibroids respond to hormones including the hormones found in foods. Organic foods have fewer and usually no hor• Hysterectomy. This is mones. the most definitive treat• Consume flavonoids: ment for fibroids. Wealth Building

How to save money while welcoming a new pet to your home Whether it's a dog, cat or another furry (or scaly) friend, many people have pets who are more than just animals – they're part of the family. Pets can be friends, they can offer nonjudgmental companionship when you're feeling down; and they can put a smile on your face. To provide the best care for a pet, you'll want to be able to afford their needs, including the basics like food and healthcare. With this in mind, think carefully and review your budget before deciding to welcome an animal into your family. Choose a pet that you can afford. While the initial cost of adopting or buying a pet is relatively small compared to the long-term expenses, the type of pet you choose does matter. Admittedly, you might visit the pound and fall in love with a dog or cat. What can you do? The heart wants what the heart wants. Research is a must if you want to take cost-saving measures, though. For example, larger animal breeds may be more expensive to care for, partially because they simply

eat more food. And if you're taking in a dog you'll want to consider the cost of training, which could set you back several hundred dollars. Lifespan is another consideration. Hamsters, gerbils and some types of fish may only live a couple of years. A pet turtle, on the other hand, could live several decades. Keep your pet healthy and happy. Health care can be one of the most expensive aspects of pet ownership. As with humans, it's often best to invest in preventative care rather than treat emergen-

It’s time to recognize those who have made positive impacts in our lives and community.

cies. Follow your pet's recommended vaccination schedule and treatments, spay or neuter cats and dogs, and visit the vet at least once a year for a checkup. Finding and dealing with health problems early on isn't only less expensive; you may be able to prevent serious problems and improve your pet's quality of life. Some types of preventative care don't require a visit to the vet, although you can still ask for recommendations. For example, brushing your dog's teeth (with special

toothpaste) can help prevent teeth and gum problems. Consider pet insurance to cover emergencies. When a pet is part of the family, you'll do anything to help him or her. You may want to have an insurance policy to help cover emergencies that you might not be able to afford otherwise. Particularly if you have a highrisk breed, a pet that tends to escape or you live in an area with a lot of other potentially aggressive animals. Before buying a policy, read up on how pet insurance works. There can be important differences between pet and human policies. Save money on nutritious food. Once you bring a pet home, it's your responsibility to provide for them. You can ask your vet for food recommendations (and free samples) based on the pet's type and age. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has general nutrition tips for dogs and cats, including age-based diet recommendations. Once you've found a food that you and your pet like, you may be able to get a discount by signing up for a

subscription delivery service online. Or, if you don't mind the workout, consider buying in bulk at a warehouse club. Have a plan for when you're unavailable. Another responsibility pet owners take on is making sure their pet is looked after while they're away. The least expensive option may be to find a neighbor or friend who also has a pet and exchange free pet-sitting services. Otherwise, you can look for a well-reviewed doggy daycare center or boarding service. You could try one of the several apps that connect you with someone who can feed, walk or play with your pet. If you're away for several days, the apps can also help you find someone who will spend the night or take your pet to their home. Bottom line: Taking a pet into your home and caring for them can be a rewarding and wonderful experience. It can also be life changing. Review the potential immediate and long-term costs to help ensure that you'll be able to provide for a pet once they join your family.
