Fresh off the All-Star break, the Milwaukee Brewers came back to American Family Field for a three-game home stand against the Colorado Rockies which took place July 22-25, 2022. As part of that series Friday, July 22, the Brewers hosted the popular Negro Leagues Tribute Game. Negro Leagues Alumni players threw out the ceremonial first pitches and hosted an autograph signing. The pre-game ceremony honored the impact of the Negro Leagues with a meaningful "Pass the Bat" ceremony where the RBI Athlete of the Month, Deundra Lathan, Jr. (center), collected signatures on a bat gifted by five-time All-Star and 2013 National League MVP Andrew McCutchen (right). The signatures represent the past, current and future generations of African American players and their impact on the game of baseball. The evening was presented by Aurora Health Care.

Employ Milwaukee,Inc. introduces new CEO, Chytania Brown

Photos by Yvonne Kemp

On Sunday, June 26, 2022, Employ Milwaukee, Inc., hosted a special "get to know you," session for their new President and CEO Chytania Brown at The Lily Pad Gallery, 215 N. Broadway. Chytania Brown is no novice to workforce development with more than two decades of experience at the local, state, and national levels. She is considered an expert in this space and is sought after to be part of panels and work groups to share her knowledge and experience. The meet-and-greet allowed community leaders, professionals and those who simply wanted to get to know her the opportunity to do so. This event was a belated welcome to Ms. Brown as she took the helm as President and CEO in March of 2020, the day everything shut down due to the pandemic. However, in just two years’ time she has taken Employ Milwaukee to tremendous growth with funding as well as new and innovative programs such as Community Resource Navigator, Earn and Learn Camp Rise, expansion of reentry programming and the opening of three satellite sites and other career pathways to training and upskilling to better employment. Senator Baldwin’s 988 Suicide and Crisis Prevention Hotline launches nationwide

Baldwin helped deliver funding for 988 line through omnibus legislation and bipartisan 'Safer Communities Act' On Friday, July 15, 2022, U.S. Senator Baldwin joined a press conference at TDS Telecom in Wisconsin to highlight the upcoming launch of the new 988 National Suicide and Crisis Lifeline on Saturday, July 16, 2022. The 988 Lifeline is made possible by U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin’s National Suicide Hotline Designation Act, bipartisan legislation that passed Congress and became law in 2020. The 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline is a national network of local crisis centers that provides free and confidential emotional support to people in suicidal crisis or emotional distress 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in the United States. The new calling code of 988 will allow people of all ages who are experienc-

ing a crisis—whether that is thoughts of suicide, a mental health concern or substance use issue, or any other kind of emotional distress—to get help for themselves or a loved one by connecting them with a trained crisis counselor. “We need to do everything we can to help those in mental health crises and prevent suicide, and that means improving the tools and resources they have when they are suffering,” said Senator Baldwin. “After working to get my bipartisan legislation signed into law and ensure funding for the implementation, I am so proud to see this quick and easy three-digit phone number launch so Americans in crisis can get the timely help and support they need. This will save lives.” “People in crisis need help

right away. That’s why we need resources like 988 to ensure a universal entry point to crisis services, similar to access to other emergency medical services through 911. We would like to thank Senator Baldwin for her leadership and thank all of our partners who have worked with us to ensure that Wisconsin is ready to provide this criti-

cal service for residents,” said Wisconsin Department of Health Services Secretary designee Karen Timberlake. “From veterans across the state of different backgrounds and generations, I hear a similar sentiment shared again and again—of the men and women who served with me, I’ve lost more to suicide than to combat,” said Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary Mary Kolar. “For veterans, you can now call 988 and press 1 to access the Veterans Crisis Line and be connected to a real person qualified to support veterans. Accessibility to effective resources is vital, especially for veterans experiencing a mental health crisis. I’m so grateful for the support and partnerships that made this possible, and I truly believe lives will be saved.”

As part of the Baldwin-supported Bipartisan Safer Communities Act that was signed into law this week, $150 million is being invested to support implementation of the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. Senator Baldwin also helped pass the 2022 fiscal year appropriations bill in March of this year that included more than $101 million for the transition to 988 hotline and $5 million for the new Behavioral Health Crisis and 988 Coordinating Office at the Department of Health and Human Services. In late 2021, the Biden administration committed more than $280 million to fund both the Lifeline and 24/7 staff increases for states. Jackie Robinson Museum opens its doors

A media-rich space in lower Manhattan celebrates Robinson’s life and promotes dialogue on race relations and other social issues More than 75 years after Jackie Robinson made his debut with the Brooklyn Dodgers, the Jackie Robinson Foundation (JRF) will open the doors to a museum in his honor Tuesday, July 26, 2022. Located at 75 Varick Street in Lower Manhattan, the nearly 20,000 square-foot space will honor the life and legacy of an American hero who very publicly broke the color barrier in Major League Baseball and played an active and equally pioneering role in the Civil Rights Movement of the last century.

The Jackie Robinson Museum (JRM) will enhance the Foundation’s mission to promote higher education, established by Rachel Robinson in 1973, by educating the general public about a man whose words and actions resonate as loudly today as they did during his lifetime. The Museum will depict Robinson’s extraordinary athleticism and explore his prolific engagement in American life that included civil rights activism, civic engagement, economic empowerment efforts and pub-

lic commentary. Educational programming for all ages is on the Museum’s agenda as are forums, lectures and other events that address issues central to Robinson’s legacy, such as equal access to education, civic affairs, economic empowerment, the business of sports and race relations. “The Jackie Robinson Museum is the realization of a dream for my family. My mother has long hoped for a permanent space where people learn about the issues my affect,” said David Robinson. father cared deeply about and “We hope the Museum will the change he fought hard to be a place to not only learn more about his time in baseball and love of sports, but about all that he did to contribute to social progress. We extend our deepest appreciation to everyone who helped make this dream a reality.” “We are thrilled to be able to open the Jackie Robin-

A primer for public service With the 2022 Wisconsin primary election date set for August 9 – less than two weeks from now –and in-person, early voting locations available as of July 26, registered voters have the opportunity to cast a ballot for their chosen candidates. The pool of possibilities will be pared down for political offices ranging from local/municipal government posts to state-wide races for governor, U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate, as well as referenda on a variety of can provide a valid photo ID, issues needing public input. and are not currently incarcerated, or on probation or In Wisconsin, if you are or parole (think about that, helwill be at least 18 years old by lo…), you can register and Election Day, are a U.S. citi- vote – in person or by absenzen, legally reside in the state,

qualifications – other than minimum age and citizenship – that are required to run for political office. Ready name recognition and having more money than God have also worked in helping candidates to capture public office, especially in recent years. However, if political office equates to public service (in other words, it’s NOT all about you), more factors should be scrutinized to determine “the measure” of a man or woman in the political arena. tee ballot – up until 8 p.m., on Election Day. Voting and elections are serious business. Never mind that the actual process of voting takes only a few minutes; the results of this action can have consequences that last for generations. For example, a U.S. Supreme Court Justice is appointed by a president who can serve for up to eight years. However, the justice, once confirmed, serves a lifetime appointment, unless removed by death, resignation or retirement, or impeachment for misconduct. Just imagine all the possible scenarios that can be considered, decided and enacted over a lifetime term, not to mention the legions of lives affected. So, voting does matters; you are exercising your responsibility as a citizen. That impact escalates exponentially if you are seeking to become a public servant by representing and articulating the needs and goals of others through the political process. Constitutionally speaking, there are few guidelines or

The following attributes are offered for your consideration as you approach the ballot box, either as a candidate or as a voter, to wade through all the momentary promises and photogenic faces, consider your options, and evaluate the “what, why and how” behind the “who.” Think of this list as a primer, of sorts, for public service. • Character – Moral or ethical strength or weakness. The way a person thinks, behaves and believes, whether good or bad; reputation. • Compassion – Consideration for others’ pain, sorrow, misfortune or other attributes that may lead one to help their fellow humans or other creatures. • Consistency – Keeping to the same principles and habits. • Duty – Conscious of obligation; the thing that one ought to do; a compelling or binding force of what is right. • Facts – Things known to be true or to have actually happened; reality. • Fairness – Just, impartial, not favoring one thing over another to take advantage of

a circumstance; giving equal time and consideration. • Forthright – Frank, outspoken, straightforward, direct, without a hidden agenda. • Faith – What a person believes IN, usually without evidence or proof; one’s personal doctrine. • Honesty – Not utilizing lies, cheating or stealing; obtaining needs or goals by fair means. • Integrity – Based on sincerity, honesty; the state of being unbroken and or upright. • Interest – Namely, being able to recognize a vested interest versus a conflict of interest, and how each of these can affect the people you represent, as well as you as their representative; knowing the difference between the two. • Principle – A truth that is a foundational concept or tenet for other truths; a guiding rule of action or conduct. • Truth – Supported by and agreeing with facts; not false, fake or contrived. These attributes are offered for your consideration and review, with the understanding that no one is perfect and we all make mistakes; but with any luck, most of our errors will be unintentional and not lethal to anyone. Our goal is not to tell you what to think…but to challenge you to exercise your brain and think for yourself, period. Check with your election board for specific details on voting that may apply in your locale. Happy voting, everyone.
