Milwaukee Common Council honors the late Dr. Irene Goggans

On Monday, July 31, 2017, the City of Milwaukee Common Council honored the late Dr. Irene Bishop Goggans in a special recognition ceremony at Milwaukee City Hall. Dr. Goggans was honored with a commendatory resolution, which was presented to her son, Kenneth Goggans. "Ms. Goggans was a treasure to the community, her knowledge of Milwaukee's African American history was unparalleled. Without her contributions, we would have many untold stories, and gaps in our history, and a missed opportunity for our legacy to be passed down to the next generations," said Alderwoman Chantia Lewis (District 9), who represents Dr. Goggans' district and was a personal friend with her. Pictured at the resolution ceremony are the Milwaukee Common Council, Dr. Goggans' son and grandchildren, as well as other family members and members of her church family. Dr. Goggans will be dearly missed by the city of Milwaukee!

Though he was respected and revered here on Earth, Dr. Ahmed Fletcher Mbalia, lovingly referred to as “Baba,” was called to be with the ancestors on July 3, 2017. He was born in Washington, DC on June 18, 1941 to Esther and LeRoy Smith. He took on many roles throughout his life: working for several non-profits, counseling people in need, and teaching in the Department of Africology at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) for more than twenty years. However, he may best be known for his fight for the rights of ALL African people, those at home and those abroad. Baba was a co-founder of Africans on the Move (AOM), a non-profit organization comprised of African people born throughout the world whose chief goal is to provide African people with educational information and cultural events that push forward their struggle for liberation. Like the Garveys of the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA), he fervently be-

lieved that once Africa is free and united, all people of African descent would receive justice. Thus, he helped to start the annual GarveyFest held in Milwaukee. Like Carter G. Woodson, Mary McLeod Bethune and others, he believed that teaching African youths their history and culture would ensure that they grow up to help struggle for the liberation of their people. Thus, he co-founded Watoto Uhuru Shule (Children’s Freedom School). Last, but not least, Ahmed F. Mbalia was a member of the Pan-African Revolutionary Socialist Party (PRSP), an organization struggling for Pan-Africanism: a united,

socialist Africa. He was preceded in passing by his mother and father, Esther and LeRoy Smith. Baba left a powerful legacy behind to be carried on by his loved ones: Doreatha Mbalia (wife), Eric Smith (Brother), Michael Smith (son), Carole Smith Neal (daughter), Jelani Mbalia (son), Kwame Mbalia (son), Jendayi Mbalia (daughter), Kamau Mbalia (son), Ayanna Neal (granddaughter), Jalil Rogers (grandson), Shani Mbalia (g randdaughter), Kendi Mbalia (g randdaughter), Layla Mbalia (granddaughter), Nia Mbalia (granddaughter), Ameenah Mbalia (granddaughter) and a host of loving family members, friends and political comrades. Though his body has gone, the principles he lived by--humanism, collectivism and egalitarianism--surely live on through his spirit and the flesh of his loved ones. Baba will be gravely missed, but we know he is now resting peacefully with the ancestors. Forward ever, Backward never!

The Counseling Corner

By Rev. Judith T. Lester, B.Min. M.Th

Church growth series (Week 1) This month this writer will begin a new series titled: “Church Growth Series.” When it comes to growing your ministry, it is a task that takes intentionality. The church must be intentional in the task of evangelism. Many churches, however, are struggling to move from the 200-attendance mark. Why? The Barna Group has indicated the average Protestant church size in America is at 89 adults. Sixty percent of Protestant churches have fewer than 100 adults in attendance. Only 2 percent have more than 1000 adults attending. Overall, the study showed there are both demographic and theolographic reasons why small churches stay small and large churches grow larger. While some church growth can be attributed to geographic location and population growth, the Barna study indicates there are fundamental dynamics at work that keep small congregations from growing numerically as well as several basic factors that contribute to the numerical expansion of mid-sized and large churches.

Small church – its demographics and theolographical limitations Demographically, it was surprising that Barna’s research showed adults under 35 years of age are more likely than are older adults to attend small churches. Barna cited two dominant reasons for this pattern. The first is the relative absence of children among younger adults. This impacts one’s choice of a church because providing children with a quality min-

istry experience is one of the main reasons why many Americans attend a church, and larger churches typically offer more programs and opportunities for children. The second reason why younger adults are more likely to attend a small church relates to the Baby Bust generation’s disinterest in participating in Boomer-led organizations and in large-scale enterprises. Busters are more interested in being personally known and connected, which many believe is more difficult to

accomplish in larger churches. Based on the study it found that small congregations (churches with an average attendance of 100 or fewer adults) tend to draw people who are not college graduates and are more likely to appeal to persons with lower incomes. The study also found some small churches have some theolographic limitations – that is, their spiritual beliefs and practices reflect challenges that are less prevalent in larger congregations. The data revealed that small churches have a lower proportion of attenders who are "spiritually active," which was defined as individuals who attend a church service, read the Bible, and pray to God during a typical week. Mid-sized churches Per the Barna study, midto-large churches tend to attract a higher proportion of adults with education whose income levels enables the church to take more risks, and engage in a more aggressive marketing strategy. Surprisingly, the study showed mid-size churches having the highest proportion of born-

again believers. The Barna study suggested that many mid-sized churches grow numerically because their bornagain members actively evangelize and invite non-born again people to the church. This often has the effect of swelling the church’s numbers so that it reaches the "large" category. Next week we will look at the problems some churches face when trying to push past the attendance barrier. In the final articles of this series, we will take a raw and hard look at why your church may not be growing. Students complete high school in Summer Academy Milwaukee Public Schools has honored 167 students who completed graduation requirements during summer school and earned the right to wear a cap and gown. This year, MPS put a concentrated effort into summer high school, seeing it as a critical opportunity to ensure students have every chance to graduate and move on to college and career. A summer graduation ceremony recognizing their accomplishments was held July 28, 2017 at South Division High School. This summer, MPS doubled the number of schools offering the summer high school program and included Madison, Obama, Pulaski, Riverside, South Division and Transition High Schools. Intensive outreach to students attracted those who could directly benefit from accelerated or recovery options. Offerings were increased and led to large enrollment and student success. Students wore their school colors and accepted their diplomas from their own school principals at the large ceremony that was attended by family and friends. MPS is proud to present these students with diplomas and send them on their personal journeys ready for college and career.

MPS gets students ready for back-to-school with Uniform and Enrollment Fair In February 2017, the Milwaukee Board of School Directors approved a district-wide uniform policy for all students starting in the 2017-18 school year. Beginning with the first day

of school for your child, either August 14 for early start schools or September 5 for all traditional calendar schools, all students in grades K-12 will be required to comply with the school

uniform policy. The policy sets uniform guidelines for all Milwaukee Public Schools; pants must be tan, navy blue or black khaki-style pants with black or navy blue polo shirts. A

student may wear any combination of the official district uniform colors or schoolidentified colors as approved by the principal and School Governance Council. As parents, you have the option of purchasing uniform items from any vendor who meets your needs. Find a list of suggested vendors that you may contact when purchasing uniforms. If you have any additional questions or concern, please contact your child's school. Parents who wish to opt out of the uniform requirement at their school may contact the principal directly to complete the necessary forms.

Six foods that age you 20 years! People think that stress is the number one cause of premature aging and graying of your hair, but that’s not the only culprit. The way you look and how well you age has a lot to do with what you put in your body. Here are five foods that we eat that are making us age as much as 20 years with every bite. 1. Agave You might use it as a replacement or healthier option for sugar, but you may want to think twice after looking in the mirror. Agave is often used in baked goods, smoothies or just on top of foods, but this sweet syrup is packed with fructose. Once the liver meets fructose, it not only turns it into fat but also breaks down collagen, making fine lines more noticeable. 2. Margarine Not all fats are created equal, and margarine was always marketed as the “healthier” option to butter–um wrong, not always.

It’s the trans fat in margarine that destroys hydration. The less your skin is hydrated, the faster the wrinkles appear. Eat This Instead: Real butter (in moderation) or extra virgin olive oil can help. 3. Potato chips Say it ain’t so! The ingredients in potato chips will dry up your internal fountain of youth super fast. Consuming trans fatty acids stimulate interleukin 6 within the body. Interleukin 6 is a marker of

inflammation, which is associated with aging. In addition, fried and deep fried oils, even those made with made with vegetable oils, can impair cell respiration and reduce immune functions within the body. Eat This Instead: Try whole grain crackers or chopped veggies like zucchini sticks or celery. 4. Pepperoni pizza By far, this is one of the most requested and eaten

pizzas in the U.S. But, while this little slice might be your favorite, it can add a whopping 20 years to your body. Here’s why: The nitrates and other compounds in processed meats, such as pepperoni, are known to be pro-inflammatory. Inflammation causes aging from inside out. In addition, the saturated fat in it ages the heart. Eat This Instead: Try a veggie pizza or just a plain cheese pizza. Other meat toppings may be slightly better, but not much. Plus, adding veggies to your pizza will help you digest all that cheese! 5. Sugary liquor The occasional glass (or two) of wine is no harm to you or your skin, but drinking those pretty, fruity and often sugary mixed drinks, causes free radicals. Alcohol also robs the body of vitamin A, an antioxidant that’s essential for cell renewal and turnover. If you do drink, reach for drinks without added sugars, such as wine, champagne, or

a vodka soda with lime. Also, be sure to drink in moderation and wash down all that alcohol with a water chaser at the end of the night or in between alcoholic drinks if you’re drinking more than three drinks. 6. Store bought/ processed baked goods We didn’t want to include this because we love sweets so much, but had to share the truth. Yes, that’s right; you may need to step away from the bakery aisle. Baked goods and other sweets are often rich in added sugars and fat, which can lead to weight gain and poor dental health. Sugar also promotes an unhealthy microbiome and it is also pro-inflammatory. All of these characteristics can accelerate the aging process. Eat This Instead: Try baking your own treats or substitute the sugary taste with more fruit options in your baked goodness.

Diabetes management: Glucose meters and test strip safety Using a glucose meter to monitor blood glucose levels is an important part of diabetes management. Generally, blood glucose should be monitored two to four times a day, either before meals or two hours after meals and at bedtime. But each case is unique. Proper storage and handling of your test strips and meter is essential for accurate results. The following information will help you monitor blood glucose accurately and safely. Pre-owned test strips Second hand or pre-owned test strips may be sold at a lower price when compared to new strips. However, they may not be a real bargain. That’s because pre-owned strips can give incorrect re-

sults—and may not be safe to use with your device. Here’s why: Test strips should be properly stored to give accurate results. “If you are using previously owned strips you do not know if they were stored at the right temperatures,” says Dacia Bryant, Founder and Chief Health Officer at A ONE C LifeBox, a digital healthcare engagement company that equips Black and Hispanic people with the tools to manage their diabetes more effectively. “If they are not stored at the recommended temperatures between 36°F to 86°F the results may be higher or lower than the actual blood glucose. This leads to possibly adjusting insulin or medication doses based on an in-

correct result,” says Bryant, who is also a pharmacist and certified diabetes educator. An incorrect result can put you at risk for serious health complications – and even death. Test strips also could be

Sharing a glucose meter The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend whenever possible that blood glucose meters should not be shared. Bryant says, “If a glucose meter and supplies are shared there is a risk of infection from blood. Smeared drops of blood from fingers can remain on the meter or on the tip of the lancing device (a needle that is used o get a drop of blood from your finger or another part of your body) after checking blood glucose.” If blood glucose meters must be shared, the CDC says the device should be (Continued on pg. 14)

Ten tips for grandparents raising grandchildren You probably didn’t see this coming at this stage of your life.

you to make key decisions about the child’s education and medical treatment.

You already raised children of your own. You’re in your 50s or 60s, and you may not have the energy levels you used to have. And now, possibly due to a plethora of heartbreaking reasons beyond your control, your grandchildren have come to live with you full time. More than 2.4 million grandparents across the country have stepped up when needed, taking their grandchildren into their homes and raising them as their own. If you’re among the grandparents in this situation, it’s quite likely that you’re consumed by seemingly relentless money worries. The following tips can help. 1. Seek out support and information. Even if support groups aren’t normally your cup of tea, it’s more important than you may realize for you to connect with other people who understand what you’re experiencing. You can find out about online and in-person support groups for grandparents in your area by

tapping into these resources: AARP and the National Committee of Grandparents for Children’s Rights. This U.S. government site also provides links to numerous resources for grandparents across the country. 2. Don’t blow through all your savings. Many dedicated grandparents end up impoverishing themselves paying for their grandchildren’s food, clothing, medical care and other needs. Instead of plunging head-long in this direction, find out whether your grandchild or your family qualifies for Social Security, your state’s Tem-

porary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program or food stamps. 3. Determine your eligibility for help. An easy way to see what kind of government support might exist for you is to fill out a confidential questionnaire at BenefitsCheckUp.org. The web site will highlight programs that could be available to you. 4. Consider your legal status. Ask a family law attorney to help you determine whether or not it would be beneficial for you to become your grandchild’s legal guardian. Such status would allow

Diabetes management (Continued from pg. 12) cleaned and disinfected after every use, per manufacturer’s instructions, to prevent carry-over of blood and infectious agents. If the manufacturer does not specify how the device should be cleaned and disinfected, then it should not be shared. Bryant explained, “There is little reason to share a meter since most insurance companies will cover your blood glucose meters and supplies. There are also several lowcost blood glucose kits you can buy at local drug stores.” Alternate site testing Some meters let individuals obtain their blood sample from an area other than their fingertip. Alternate sites in-

clude your palm, upper arm, forearm, thigh, or calf. Many people prefer alternate sites because they are less painful. “Taking a blood sample from the palm, forearm and upper arm may be less painful for most people, compared to the fingertips, because there are fewer nerves in these areas,” says Bryant. If you feel symptoms of low blood glucose, test your finger instead of an alternate site. “The blood glucose reading from alternate areas may reflect a delayed reading that is 30 minutes old. Taking a blood glucose reading from the fingertip reflects the most current value.” Additionally, you should use only blood from your fingertip if you: have just taken insulin, are not aware of symptoms when you have low blood glucose, have just eaten, just exercised, are ill, or if you are under stress.

A-Lego hosts "The Power of Connecting" women's conference

Photos by Yvonne Kemp

On Saturday, July 29, 2017 the African American Ladies Empowered to Grow Opportunities (A-Lego) hosted "The Power of Connecting, The Most Powerful Women Conference," at the Mother Kathryn Daniels Center, 3500 West Mother Daniels Way. A-Lego's mission is to help renew the community of Milwaukee by bridging this new world of ideas into action; and to deepen the understanding of the issues that must be resolved to achieve racial and ethical equity as our society moves through the great transformation of the 21st century. This conference brought together some of the most powerful black female leaders in our community to exchange ideas and spark discussions. The keynote speaker for this conference was news reporter and anchor Demarco Morgan (pictured below). As part of the conference A-Lego presented a Ladies of Distinction Luncheon which honored eleven women (pictured above) for their achievements in the community. They include: Jeogella Carter, Katie Bell, Dr. Rose Coppins, Rhonda Cosby, Sheryle Cunningham, Pastor Melva Henderson, Josephine Hill, Mary Radtke, Sharon Robinson, Crystal Stotts, and Mary Kathrine Larry.
