Milwaukee celebrates African American art and Toni Morrison, Nobel laureate culture at 2019 Black Arts Fest MKE who transfigured American literature, dies at 88

On Saturday, August 3, 2019, the Black Arts Fest MKE was host to the "2nd Annual Black Arts Fest 2019," at the Henry Maier Festival Park. The festival celebrated African American culture and though art, music, dance, and food. There were a number of vendors selling art, and African inspired clothing and jewelery. Among the many performers were headliners vocalist Bettye LaVette, and 90's R&B trio SWV (Sisters With Voices).

On Saturday, August 3, 2019, State Representative Evan Goyke (upper photo, center) and his wife, Gaby hosted a Campaign Rally and cookout in the backyard of their home in the 18th district on 27th and Wells Streets. Evan was joined by numerous supporters, family and neighbors, and even fellow Democrats like Congresswoman Gwen Moore (inset photo) to raise funds and start their "get-outthe-vote" push for the upcoming election.
Toni Morrison, the Nobel Prize-winning novelist who conjured a Black girl longing for blue eyes, a slave mother who kills her child to save her from bondage and other indelible characters who helped transfigure a literary canon long closed to African Americans, died Monday, August 5, 2019, at a hospital in the Bronx. She was 88. Ms. Morrison spent an impoverished childhood in Ohio steel country, began writing during what she described as stolen time as a single mother, and became the first Black woman to receive the Nobel Prize in literature. Critically acclaimed and widely loved, she received recognitions as diverse as the Pulitzer Prize and the selection of her novels — four of them — for the book club led by talk-show host Oprah Winfrey. Ms. Morrison placed African Americans, particularly women, at the heart of her writing at a time when they were largely relegated to the margins both in literature and in life. With language celebrated for its lyricism, she was credited with conveying as powerfully, or more than perhaps any novelist before her, the nature of Black life in America, from slavery to the inequality that went on more than a century after it ended. Among her best-known works was “Beloved” (1987), the Pulitzer-winning novel later made into a film starring Winfrey. It introduced millions of readers to Sethe, a slave mother haunted by the memory of the child she had murdered, having judged
life in slavery worse than no life at all. Like many of Ms. Morrison’s characters, she was tortured, yet noble — “unavailable to pity,” as the author described them. Ms. Morrison’s Nobel Prize, bestowed in 1993, made her the first native-born American since John Steinbeck in 1962 to receive that honor. Beyond her own literature, Ms. Morrison was credited with giving voice to Black stories through her work as a Random House editor beginning in the late 1960s. There was a “terrible price to pay,” she once remarked, for leaving the comfortable familiarity of Lorain, the Ohio town where she had grown up, for a career in an unwelcoming white society. Survivors include her son Harold Ford Morrison of Princeton, N.J.; and three grandchildren.

Why a Christian approach to fighting homelessness pays off Study: Ministries saved taxpayers $119 million in 11 cities by offering both housing and healing
When it comes to America’s homeless, Christian organizations set out to do more than offer a hot meal and safe place to stay. They believe that in order to best serve their needy neighbors, they must get to know them. “Instead of being a kitchen cook, you’d be out at the tables with the people,” said Jim Reese, president and CEO of Atlanta Mission, which serves 1,000 homeless men, women, and children a day in its shelters, programs, and transitional homes. “How do you change lives? It comes from creating a relationship with them and building trust.” Though religious nonprofits in some locales have faced escalating restrictions on homeless outreach in recent years, their efforts are working. Researchers discovered that faith-based organizations’ relational approach leads to a deeper understanding of the complexity of homelessness and better outcomes for their clients and cities. Ministries provide 60 percent of emergency shelter spots available in 11 major American cities, and the more faith-based shelters operating, the smaller its homeless population, according to a Baylor University study published last month. In the 11 locations studied (Atlanta, Baltimore, Denver, Houston, Indianapolis, Jacksonville, Omaha, Phoenix, Portland, San Diego, and Seattle), faith-based nonprofits were particularly effective at reducing the homeless population, and saved taxpayers an estimated $119 million with their care and training. “While government programs and public policy address homelessness directly as the problem, the faith community often sees it as symptomatic of more complex personal and societal conditions stemming from relational poverty and family fragmentation,” the study concluded, comparing their approach to a Department of Housing and Urban Development program called Housing First. Religious nonprofits were more likely to offer holistic care than to focus exclusively on the issue of housing. Though the church has ministered to the poor for centuries through missions organizations such as the Salvation Army, shelters, and soup kitchens, today’s evangelicals have added “relational poverty”—a concept explored in books such as When Helping Hurts and Walking With the Poor—as a primary

“In most cases, people become homeless due to a range of complex personal and societal factors, not just because they cannot afford a home,” stated Byron R. Johnson, Baylor professor of social sciences and the report’s lead author. “Our conclusions demonstrate that faith-based organizations are in a unique position to treat the systemic issues that create homelessness to develop sustainable solutions for both individuals and municipalities.” Among the faith-based organizations studied, all were affiliated with a religious tradition and cited it as their motivation for outreach; some required or offered religious activities as well. In addition to housing the homeless, researchers examined the outcomes from their addiction recovery programs, job training, and family reunification efforts—all markers of personal transformation and government dollars saved. They concluded faith-based organizations are “at the forefront of program innovation” with their

National Breastfeeding Month: Breaking down the stigma - Week 2 baby’s immune system. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) is an excellent resource for this topic. The AAP reports human milk provides virtually all the protein, sugar and fat your baby needs to be healthy and it also contains many substances that benefit your baby’s immune system, including antibodies, immune factors, enzymes, and white blood cells. These substances protect your baby against a wide variety of diseases and infections not only while the baby is breastfeeding but, in some cases, long after the baby has weaned. Formula cannot offer this protection. The AAP uses as a hypothetical, if you develop a cold while breastfeeding, you are likely to pass the cold germs on to your baby, but the antibodies your body produces to fight that cold also will be passed on through your milk. These antibodies will help your infant conquer the cold germs quickly and effectively
In continuation of the series regarding breastfeeding in honor of National Breastfeeding Month, this week we will look at the benefits of breastfeeding. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, research shows that breastfeeding offers many health benefits for infants and mothers, as well as potential economic and environmental benefits for communities. Research also shows that very early skin-to-skin contact and suckling may have physical and emotional benefits as well.1 Other studies suggest that breastfeeding may reduce the risk for certain allergic diseases, asthma, obesity and type 2 diabetes. It also may help improve an infant’s cognitive development. However, more research is needed to confirm these findings according to the U.S. Dept. of Health & Human Services. Let’s look at the benefits breastfeeding can have on a
and possibly avoid developing the cold altogether.2 Many mothers want to breastfeed but they stop early due to a lack of support and the discomfort they experience while breastfeeding in public. The U.S. Surgeon General notes that more than 66 percent of breastfeeding mothers have already begun using formula by the time their infants are 3 months old. And by 6 months more than half of the mothers have given up on breastfeeding, and mothers who breastfeed one-yearolds or toddlers are a rarity in
our society. Beloved, there are many public places where breastfeeding women are welcomed, but even in this 21st century, there are still many places that discourage mothers from breastfeeding in public, even though breastfeeding is the recommended way of feeding babies. It is my prayer, we are raising a generation who will be the change agents to break the taboo that is associated with public breastfeeding. Sources: 1 Feldman-Winter, L., & Goldsmith, J. How payday loans work – biggest dangers and 14 better alternatives (final) 14. Borrow from your 401k Borrowing from your retirement plan is different from making a withdrawal. If you have $50,000 in your plan and you withdraw $5,000, your balance drops to $45,000. The other $5,000 goes into your pocket, you pay taxes on it, and you don’t have to pay it back. When you take out a loan, by contrast, the balance in your plan stays at $50,000. The $5,000 you took out is still treated as part of your portfolio – it’s just in the form of a loan you’ve made to yourself. However, you have to pay back the $5,000 on schedule to avoid taxes and penalties. Under the rules of the Internal Revenue Service, you can’t borrow money from an IRA or from any plan that works like an IRA, such as SEP and SIMPLE plans. However, if your employer allows it, you can take out a loan from your 401k or similar plan. You can borrow up to half the balance in your account, up to a maximum of $50,000. And as long as you pay the money back within five years, you owe no taxes and no penalty. Borrowing from your 401k is one of the quickest and easiest ways to get a loan. You can take up to five years to pay it off, but there’s no penalty for paying it back early. The interest rates are very low – usually around 5 percent. And better yet,
all the interest you pay goes into your own account, so it ends up back in your pocket. However, that doesn’t mean 401k loans are riskfree. The drawbacks of borrowing from your own retirement plan include: 1. Lost earnings. When you take money out of your account, you miss out on all the profits that money could have earned if you’d left it there. If you borrow $1,000 and the market rises by 10 percent before you pay it back, that’s $100 in earnings you’ve missed. Of course, markets can go up as well as down, so you could end up avoiding a $100 loss instead of a $100 gain. But even if you lose money, your lost earnings are almost sure to be less than the cost of a payday loan. Remember, a typical payday loan has an APR of more than 390 percent, which would be nearly
impossible to earn invested in the stock market for one year (the average annual return for the S&P 500 has been approximately 11 percent since 1966). And while market gains are hard to predict, the high cost of a payday loan is absolutely certain. 2. Extra fees. The interest you pay on a 401k loan, isn’t really a cost, because it goes right back into your account. But most 401k loans also have an origination fee of around $75. If you’re only borrowing $1,000, that means you lose 7.5 percent of your loan right off the top. In addition, some 401k loans have administration and maintenance fees that last until you pay them back. Again, these fees are much lower than the interest on a payday loan, but they aren’t negligible either. 3. Double taxation. When you donate to a 401k,

you use pretax dollars, and you don’t pay tax on the money until you withdraw it. However, when you borrow from a 401k, you have to pay back the loan – including the interest – with after-tax dollars. This means that you get taxed twice on the interest you pay: once when you deposit it, and again when you withdraw it. But this extra tax doesn’t add up to that much money. If you borrow $1,000 and pay it back at 5 percent over one year, the interest is only $50 a year. And if you pay 15 percent in taxes on that $50, your tax hit only amounts to $7.50. That’s trivial compared to the costs of a payday loan, or even a credit card loan. 4. Possible penalties. The biggest risk of a 401k loan is that you absolutely must pay it back on schedule. If you don’t, the unpaid portion of the loan gets treated as a withdrawal. You have to pay the tax on it and the 10 percent early withdrawal penalty if you’re under 59 1/2 years of age. So if you’ve borrowed $1,000 and only paid back $500, you could owe around $125 in taxes and penalties. Fortunately, this type of loan is much easier to pay back on time than a payday loan. You have five whole years to pay it off, and you can pay in manageable installments. You can even have money
withheld automatically from your paycheck to make sure you never miss a payment. 5. Switching jobs. If you lose your job or change jobs, you could lose access to your 401k. You can roll over the balance to a new account, but you can’t roll over a loan that isn’t paid off. You have to pay it back at once or else treat it as a withdrawal and pay the tax and penalty on it. However, most employers give you a grace period of 60 days to pay back the loan if this happens. This gives you time to find another source of funds – including any of the ones listed previously – to pay off your loan and avoid the tax hit. Final word Payday loans are so terrible that just about any alternative looks good by comparison. Cash advances, overdraft protection, high-interest personal loans, and early IRA withdrawals are all awful ideas under normal circumstances. But if your only alternative is a payday loan, these awful ideas are definitely the lesser of two evils. However, it’s important to remember that the lesser of two evils is still bad. Other forms of debt are worth using as a last-ditch attempt to avoid a payday loan – but that doesn’t mean you want to become dependent on them. So once you’ve dealt with your immediate cash crunch, you need to avoid getting into this situation again. Even if better budgeting can’t save you this time around, you should definitely tighten up your budget in the future. At the same time, you should take steps to build up an emergency fund. That way, the next time you’re strapped for cash, you won’t have to choose between bad debt and even worse debt. Have you ever used a payday loan? If so, would you do it again?
