Milwaukee Brewers host 'African American Heritage Night'

On Friday, August 3, 2018, The Milwaukee Brewers hosted African American Heritage Night, presented by Aurora Health Care® at Miller Park when they took on the Colorado Rockies. The team honored the rich history of the Negro Leagues and its profound impact on the game of baseball as we know it today. As part of a special pre-game ceremony, the Brewers recognized Warren Kirkendoll and Herbert Walker (inset photo, from left), who played in the Negro Leagues' barnstorming years of the 1950s. Most of the surviving Negro League players are in their 80s and 90s, making it all the more important to remember their contributions to our national pastime. As part of the celebrations there was an autograph session, special exhibits showcasing the history of the Negro Leagues the Brewers wearing the Milwaukee Bears uniforms during the game, and a special question and answer session and ceremony at Holy Redeemer Institutional Church Of God In Christ. Pictured at the pre-game ceremony are other surviving members of the Negro League that took part in the weekend festivities; they are (from left) Al Holt; Warren Kirkendoll; Reggie Howard; Herb Walker; Henry Elmore; Don "Rook" Porter; James Cobbin; and Dennis Biddle.

Long-time Milwaukee community and religious leader, Betty Nabors, passes

Mrs. Betty Jane Logan Nabors, a longtime educator and religious leader in the Milwaukee community, peacefully passed away in St. Louis, MO on August 2, 2018. Born on September 20, 1940, and reared in Richmond Heights, MO, Mrs. Nabors earned a bachelor of science degree in elementary education with a minor in music, and a master of arts degree in special education from college after graduating from high school. She served as a dedicated elementary school teacher with the Milwaukee Public School system for 34 years, during which she was an inspiring mentor to other educators. Her last MPS school assignment was with Phillips Elementary School. From the age of eight, she felt a strong call to Christian ministry to which she remained true for the next seven decades, including as an exemplary mentor to other pastors' wives. CHILD WATCH

3

Perspectives

Wednesday, August 15, 2018

By: Marian Wright Edelman President of the Children's Defense Fund

Childhoods ended by guns On July 16, 10-year-old Makiyah Wilson was shot and killed in front of her Washington, DC home trying to buy ice cream. Makiyah was a rising fifth grader who loved basketball, football, art, and puzzles. She had just opened her front door on her way to the ice cream truck in the courtyard when four young men pulled up in a car and started shooting into a crowd of people enjoying the summer evening. Four people, including Makiyah’s 18-year-old sister, were injured and Makiyah was hit in the chest. Neighbors watched helplessly as her mother screamed and prayed over her dying child, still holding the five-dollar bill she’d been given to buy a treat. An ice cream truck sat outside the church during Makiyah’s funeral as a stark reminder of the childhood innocence and joy shattered by the shooting. Between 2007 and 2016, 156 children and teens were killed by guns in Washington, DC compared to two local law enforcement officers killed by guns in the line of duty during that same 10-year period. The Washington Post

www.milwaukeetimesnews.com

noted that the day before Makiyah’s murder, a 12-yearold boy was shot and injured in the District. On July 4th 11-year-old Ashley Prentice, who once attended the same school as Makiyah, was hit

by gunfire during a holiday cookout. She told a reporter, “I was sad because I was like, why me? I always get good grades in school. I’m just a good girl. And I’m like, why me?” Then she heard about

Makiyah: “I felt really sad about how her parents could feel because if that was me, I could have been the one dead.” Makiyah’s friends and family are far from alone. In 2016, 3,128 children and teens were killed by guns in America – more than 8 every day. There were 221 gun victims 10 years old and younger. Another 17,155 children and teens were injured with a gun leaving physical and emotional scars that often last a lifetime. This pervasive everyday gun violence kills children like seven-yearold Taylor Hayes, who died in Baltimore on July 19 two weeks after being shot in the back while riding in the back seat of a car. Taylor reportedly loved reading, dancing, singing and games like Go Fish. It injures children like a nine-year-old girl in Chattanooga, Tennessee left in critical condition on July 22 after being hit in the stomach by a stray bullet during an argument between adults. Pervasive gun violence terrorizes millions of children forced to go about their everyday lives in neighborhoods where it is a common threat. When six-year-old Florida first grader King Carter was killed by gunfire in 2016 on his way to buy candy, more than 100 children and teenagers had been killed by guns in his county, Miami-Dade, in the previous three years. At King’s funeral family members and friends decorated the church with football goalposts and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle figures. Black children and teens are disproportionately affected by gun violence. In 2016, 43 percent of gun deaths were among Black children and teens, although they were only 14 percent of all children and teens. That year 1,335 Black children and teens were killed by guns. The gun death rate for Black children and teens was nearly four times that for White children and teens and more than eight times that for Asian and Pacific Islander children and teens. Between 1963 and 2016, 65,947 Black children and teens were killed by guns — more than 16 times the recorded lynchings of Black people of all ages in the 74 years from 1877 to 1950. An Urban Institute report points out “exposure to gun violence has been linked to a variety of psychological challenges like anger and dissociation, anxiety and depression, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It can also affect youth in the classroom, making it difficult for

them to concentrate in class and damaging their academic performance and educational or career aspirations.” It noted another study of urban youths which found 42 percent reported having seen someone shot or knifed and 22 percent reported having seen someone killed. Children are dying from gunfire every day and those left behind and often living in fear are suffering deep trauma. Although Black children are at special risk, shootings at schools and in movie theatres and concerts show no child is fully safe in a nation saturated by guns. The most recent estimate of U.S. civilian gun ownership exceeds 393 million, more than one gun per person. In contrast, U.S. military and law enforcement agencies possess only approximately 5.5 million guns. Although the U.S. accounts for less than five percent of the global population, Americans own 46 percent of all civilian-owned guns in the world. A study published in the American Journal of Medicine last year said among high-income nations, 91 percent of children under 15 killed by gunfire lived in the United States. This is insane and indefensible. Makiyah Wilson’s mother said her youngest child wanted to “conquer the world” but watched a flower-draped horse and buggy carry her daughter’s casket away after her funeral. All because our nation refuses to protect children and to protest guns. What will it take for our nation to stand up and value children more than guns? Marian Wright Edelman is President of the Children's Defense Fund whose Leave No Child Behind® mission is to ensure every child a Healthy Start, a Head Start, a Fair Start, a Safe Start and a Moral Start in life and successful passage to adulthood with the help of caring families and communities. The Counseling Corner

By Rev. Judith T. Lester, B.Min. M.Th

Titus 2 Mentoring (Week 2) This month this column is highlighting a Mother’s Board Luncheon sponsored by the Progressive Baptist Church (Milwaukee). Their emphasis was Titus 2 Mentoring and Bridging the Generational Gap. This week, tips will be provided for the Older Woman (mentor) and then to the Younger Woman (mentee) on ways to intentionally interact with one another based on an article by Jean Williams “Woman to Woman: Answering the Call of Titus 2” (2010). Be blessed. The older woman (The mentor) • Share your life, thoughts, and struggles. Let younger women “see your progress.” (1 Tim. 4:15.) • Ask questions. Be interested. Be slow to give unso-

licited advice. • Listen. • Share how you read the Bible and pray. Talk about how you deal with temptations to worry or gossip. • Invite women into your home. Let them see how you run things. Teach a young woman how to make and keep a budget. • If you’re married, welcome a single woman into your family, especially on occasions like Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas. • If you’re single, model godliness in long-term singleness: show how your trust remains firmly in the Lord and how you serve Him in your circumstances. Model godly relationships with the opposite sex. • Enlist young women’s

help in helping others. Spend a day together visiting an assisted living or nursing home. Teach Sunday school together. •Be intentional when you go to church. Sit next to a younger woman and ask how she’s doing living as a Christian. • Be involved in young women’s lives. Call, text or connect with them on a social media networking platform. Remember their details and ask about them. • Write a younger woman an encouraging note, telling her how you’ve seen her grow in godliness. Ask how you can pray for her. The younger woman (The mentee) • Respect older women and what they’ve learned

and have to offer. • Listen. • Attach yourself to an older woman you respect and ask questions. Seek out an older woman who is standing firm in her faith, persevered through suffering, has a heart for evangelism, who has raised her children well, who respects her husband, or who trust God through longterm singleness or childlessness. Write down questions to ask her. • Ask an older woman to read a book with you. • Older women may not want to push themselves on you. It may be up to you to take the initiative. • Call an older woman and ask for advice and prayer the next time you struggle to pray, manage your time

well or love others. Next Week: Bridging the Generational Gap The writer does not assume responsibility in any way for readers’ efforts to apply or utilize information or recommendations made in this article, as they may not be necessarily appropriate for every situation to which they may refer. Why I deserve your vote to be the next Sheriff of Milwaukee County By Earnell Lucas We need a new vision for public safety in our county. For the past sixteen years, we have witnessed a failed model of leadership in our Sheriff ’s Office, one that places the self-interest of individual politicians above the best interests of the people. Meanwhile, patrols have been cut from our highways and from our parks, and conditions in the Milwaukee County Jail deteriorated to a point where seven people died in the jail within eighteen months. The people of Milwaukee County deserve a new Sheriff who will restore honor, integrity and the public’s trust to the Sheriff ’s Office. As your next Sheriff, I will reform the jail and embrace principles of restorative justice. I will operate the jail as a secure and humane facility, supervised by trusted commanders and staffed by highlytrained correctional officers and experienced medical professionals. Under my supervision, everyone detained in the jail will promptly receive the resources and medical attention they need to remain safe and healthy. Furthermore, I will partner with the District Attorney’s Office and the courts to ensure that individuals facing acute mental health challenges are not detained in our facility, and receive the services they need in the community. As Sheriff, I will reprioritize public safety. I will end the current administration’s practice of understaffing

the Traffic Enforcement Unit. Under my leadership, the Sheriff ’s Office will restore a trusted public safety presence throughout our freeway system, keeping commuters safe from reckless, intoxicated and wrong-way drivers. I will implement strict internal policies to ensure that the only drivers stopped by the Sheriff ’s Office are drivers who are breaking the law. Under my administration, the Sheriff ’s Office will not tolerate racial profiling of any kind, and violators will be swiftly and publicly held accountable. By partnering with the residents of Milwaukee County, I will work to build a strong and safe community for all. I will put an end to the lax oversight of Sheriff ’s Office foreclosed property sales, which have allowed abusive landlords to exploit our community. I will collaborate with neighborhood activists

and block watch groups to create a Neighborhood Park Watch program, uniting law enforcement with residents to keep our parks safe at all hours of the day and night. And I will create new, innovative partnerships with law enforcement agencies in all nineteen Milwaukee County municipalities, to end human trafficking and the movement of illegal guns and opioids into our community. Milwaukee County is a community of immigrants, and as Sheriff, I will honor and affirm the rights of newcomers to this country. As Sheriff, I will not engage in 287g program, I will not engage in immigration raids, and I will not automatically honor ICE detainees, instead putting all detainer requests through a rigorous review process. If public safety circumstances require us to honor a detainer request, I will ensure that the individual

How to deal with four common pregnancy complications By: Brooklyn White Being pregnant is a magical, glorious time for many women. You get to spend nearly a year bonding with yourself and your unborn child. Truthfully speaking though, not everyone has a flawless experience with pregnancy. When I went in for my first OBGYN appointment as an expectant mother, I was told that there was a cyst on my umbilical cord and that I would need to start seeing a high-risk doctor. It was horrifying and made me realize that there are certain health complications one can experience while being pregnant. Even huge stars, like Remy Ma, have dealt with complexities – in early 2017 it was revealed that she had suffered a miscarriage and would not be able to carry children again. The key to coping with pregnancy complications is being well versed in how to deal with them and keeping a strong spirit. Following, I will share a few common

obstacles and shed light on what to do if you encounter them. Premature birth Carrying your child to term is usually the goal, but sometimes, it just doesn’t come to fruition. The American Pregnancy Association says that any baby that comes before the 37-week mark is considered to be premature. Remembering those we have lost Betty J. Nabors (Continued from pg. 1) One of her most enduring contributions to the Milwaukee community began when together with her husband of 54 years, the Rev. Dr. Roy B. Nabors and four other families, the group decided to create a new church congregation called Community Baptist Church of Greater Milwaukee during a meeting in the Nabors’ Milwaukee home in December 1977. After securing a suitable location for the growing congregation at 2249 N. Sherman Blvd., in 1982, the church began to practice what Pastor Nabors described in many of his sermons as “holistic community church ministry.” When Rev. Nabors retired from Community Baptist Church of Greater Milwaukee in January 2009, the congregation included more than 300 families, 17 ministries and through its various ministries employed 125 persons.

After Mrs. Nabors retired from MPS, she increased her service to the church family side-by-side with her husband. Together the couple established Community Vision Academy, where she served as an administrator and teacher. CVA was the first church-sponsored school formed in Milwaukee. It served more than 100 students in grades pre-kindergarten through the fifth grade for a number of years. In addition to her work with CVA, Mrs. Nabors also taught Sunday school, new member classes, Vacation Bible School and Bible study for teachers’ workshops. She played piano, sang in the church choir and was an active member of the Women’s Retreat Committee. Betty always had a graceful and pleasant persona.
