As part of the weekend, Prince Fielder was enshrined into the Brewers Walk of Fame, the 21st player to be inducted into the prestigious group. The U.S. Senate race: The other highly watched race has been the race for Sen. Ron Johnson's U.S. Senate seat. Johnson, who promised during his last run not to seek re-election, reneged on said promise post-Donald Trump's loss. In response, the race be came packed with Demo cratic candidates seeking a chance to unseat Johnson in the fall. Some of those who were contending for a spot were Lt. Gov. Mande la Barnes, Milwaukee Bucks executive Alex Lasry, Sarah Godlewski, Tom Nelson, Steven Olikara, Darrell Wil liams, Kou Lee, and Peter Peckarsky. Barnes, who had been the front runner from the start, ended up beat ing the other candidates by 77.82 percent, and winning the chance to unseat Sen. Johnson. Lt. Governor's race: With Barnes vacating the office of Lt. Governor to fo cus on the race for U.S. Sen ate, that meant the office was open to be filled by either a Democrat or Republican. On Tuesday, August 9, 2022, Wisconsinites went to the polls to narrow the field of candidates in three of the top races for the state of Wis consin. Those include races for Governor, Lt. Governor and Ron Johnson's US Sen ate seat. Here are the results: The Governor's race: In the race for Wisconsin's highest office, Republican Tim Michels will face off against incumbent Democrat Gov. Tony Evers. Michels fought a packed race against other Republican candidates including former Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch. Both Mi chels and Kleefisch falsely claimed the 2020 presiden tial election was rigged, a lie former President Donald Trump has pushed in an ef fort to overturn his loss to Joe Biden. Federal and state election officials and Trump’s own attorney general have said there is no credible evi dence the election was taint ed. The former president’s allegations of fraud were also roundly rejected by courts, including by judges Trump appointed. Michels said decertifying the results of the 2020 con test was not a priority but said “everything will be on the table.” He supports other changes to voting and elec tions, including dismantling the bipartisan commission that runs Wisconsin elec tions.

Criminal justice?

• The U.S. is one of the few countries in the world that has a bail system that allows cash payment. A person ac cused of a crime theoretically can pay an amount of money to the court as a guarantee that, if released from custo dy, they will return to court for trial. If they can’t pay the bail, then they must remain incarcerated until their tri al date. They end up being punished for their poverty as well as any suspected wrong doing.•Once a person has been incarcerated, they are ex pected to reintegrate into the community and become pro ductive. However, they often meet with discrimination in achieving and maintaining the basics of independence and survival, such as employ ment, housing, education and healthcare. A feeling of frustration and futility can ensue and result in a return to illegal activity.

• The systematic denigra tion of formerly incarcerat ed citizens often continues into that part of the system known as “extended super vision,” or probation and parole. Rather than encour aging and supporting success in society, probation and pa role are often administered in ways that reinforce low self-esteem among clients and result in clients’ failure to complete probation/parole as quickly as possible, thus ex tending their time in the sys tem or revoking altogether the progress they have made.

• Involvement with the U.S. criminal justice system often comes with a loss of voting rights for the con victed wrongdoer. Only two states – Maine and Vermont – as well as the District of Columbia never revoke an incarcerated person’s right to vote. The other states sus pend voting rights on some level and reinstatement can be a years-long process. This can also negatively impact certain populations, particu larlyCriminalminorities.justice as prac ticed in our country has created a waste of human potential that has negative ly impacted communities of color disproportionately and is difficult to recover. Until we as a nation and as a com munity recognize, address and reverse this disparity, the outcomes will continue to emphasize the “criminal” and block any possibility of “justice” for any of us.

The United States of Amer ica and its brand, usage and application of the English language are peculiar in one aspect. That is, what you say and hear versus what actual ly transpires as a result can be vastly different. A classic example is the term “criminal justice.”According to the dictio nary, the word “criminal” refers to anyone or anything that acts against the law; or a commission of wrongdoing. The word “justice” is defined as “the power and authority to maintain what is fair and right.” Combine these two words into the phrase “crim inal justice” and you get “the delivery of fair treatment to those who have been accused of committing wrongdoing.”

The fact is, in many cases, the opposite of a fair out come focused on rehabili tation and restoration is the reality of involvement with the U.S. criminal justice sys tem. A journey through this system is often paved with dehumanizing, disrespectful, and psychologically damag ing actions directed toward clients of the system. Instead of being punished for wrong doing and moving on from there, the system becomes a perpetual punishment pro gram that entraps its clients long after one has completed a prison term. It appears that incarcera tion is “big business” in the United States. In fact, our country has the highest in carceration rate in the world, presently at 743 of every 100,000 citizens. We have 4.2 percent of the world’s population; yet we have 20 percent of the world’s pris oners. According to the Bu reau of Justice Statistics, our country spent more than $30-billion on maintaining people behind bars in 2017. With these statistics in mind, consider the following:

Though neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) was identified more than a century ago, a lot of people still haven’t heard of it. Black people, in particular, need to be wary as it’s been found to affect them more than other eth nicities. That’s only one of a few recent discoveries, though, and researchers still have quite a bit of work to do. Here’s what they know so far. What Is NMOSD? NMOSD is a rare autoim mune disorder that can also be known as Devic disease, Devic syndrome, optic neu romyelitis, or opticomyeli tis. In this disorder, the im mune system attacks a water channel protein called aqua porin 4, which is essential to the production of healthy cells in the central nervous system. As a result of this at tack, astrocytes and neurons die and the protective lining of the brain and spinal cord is damaged or broken down. This sequence of events is why NMOSD is charac terized by inflammation in the spinal cord and optic nerves. In many cases, this inflammation quickly re sults in permanent damage, and people can end up blind or paralyzed. There was a point when doctors thought NMOSD was simply a form of multiple sclerosis (MS) but this was proven not to be the case.

The important findings of the recent study While the disease has been on researchers’ radar for about a century, it wasn’t until recently that they ex plored how NMOSD might be related to a patient’s eth nicity.During this study, it was found that black people were 2-3 times more likely to be diagnosed with the illness than other ethnicities. In terestingly, the disease was also more likely to progress quickly, get diagnosed at an earlier age, and have more adverse effects such as per manent disabilities. When studying how the current treatment options affected African Americans, researchers also found that ethnicity made a difference. Those who were given drugs that affect B-cells, saw bet ter results while others who were given different drugs actually experienced a high er rate of infections. Addi tionally, the disorder was found to affect women more often than men. Why it affects more Afri can Americans As with several other dis eases that disproportion ately affect black people, researchers estimate that genetics play a major role in the higher risk of devel oping NMOSD. Researchers also found that your loca tion could have an impact asDuringwell. the study, 3 in 100,000 persons in Japan were diagnosed with the disease but 11 in 100,000 in the French-speaking Carib bean island of Martinique. Since this is relatively new information, however, re searchers are interested in doing more location-based studies as well as further clinical trials with African Americans. The symptoms to look out for In the early stages of NMOSD, it can be difficult to differentiate between the disorder and MS. However, doctors recommend making note of how your symptoms change or progress over time so you can let your doctor know. For the most part, the symptoms of NMOSD get worse more quickly than MS. You may also experi ence more rapidly cycling periods of remission and flares. Some of the symptoms you may have include blurry vision or blindness in one or both eyes, weakness or pa ralysis in the legs or arms, painful spasms, numbness throughout the body, chron ic nausea, vomiting, uncon trolled hiccups, bladder or bowel problems, and trouble sleeping.Thediagnosis of NMOSD typically includes a thor ough neurologic medical examination, blood tests, spinal tap, and an MRI. It’s these tests that can make it clear that you have NMOSD and not MS. For example, people with MS will have evidence of damage to certain areas of the brain during an MRI. Those with NMOSD, on the other hand, won’t show any damage. Once you’re diag nosed, your doctor will need to establish a medical regi men. While the disease can’t be cured, it can be managed effectively.NMOSD might be rare but a recent study highlights that African Americans are still at a higher risk than other ethnicities. If you’re concerned about any of the symptoms listed here, then talk to your doctor quickly. When NMOSD is left unad dressed, it can progress rap idly and cause permanent damage.

In June 2022, Heart 2 Heart launched “Cooking as Therapy” classes. The group partnered with the Oak Creek Community Center to host a Single Moms and Kids Cooking Class. After the ses sion, they asked participants to complete an evaluation of theParticipantsclass. said the class es gave them a sense of community while learning new skills and recipes. They said they were able to share meaningful experiences with their children in a loving and healthy environment and had an opportunity to meet new moms and children. They said cooking is a stress reliever that also gives them quality time to develop rela tionships.Heart2 Heart Compas sionate Widow’s Circles Inc., is a non-profit organization that works to bridge the gap between church and com munity while empowering participants towards inde pendence and self-sufficiency via their participation in the Compassionate Widow’s Cir cles led by ministry leaders. “Heart 2 Heart Compas sionate Widow’s Circles takes a unique and different ap proach to using cooking to calm the body and clear the minds of each participant,” Hibbler said. “We use cook ing as therapy to replenish and improve the mood of seniors, while fostering them to participate in a social ac tivity.”Hibbler said the group is looking to expand the Cook ing as Therapy courses to include a multi-generation al educational approach to cooking in a fun, interactive group setting that targets those age 55 and over.

Heart 2 Heart shares in that mission and is grateful that their “Cooking with Seniors” project was selected for the grant, Hibbler con tinued. “We look forward to using the award to host two cooking classes for seniors in celebration of Grandpar ents Day on Sunday, Sept. 11. May God continue to bless AARP to continue the good work that they are do ing to be a true example of what kindness, generosity and compassion looks like in Southeast Wisconsin.”

“We know how cooking and food can bring people together and Heart 2 Heart Compassionate Widow’s Cir cles, Inc., has done an amaz ing job offering these classes to our 50-plus community. With this grant they can now offer even more cooking workshops,” Miller said. Genene Hibbler, Found er and Executive Director of Heart 2 Heart, said the group will spend the grant money on food, equipment, supplies and a facilitator for the “Cooking with Seniors” classes.“With the rising cost of food and other commodities, every dollar has to count in households within our local communities,” said Hibbler, who added that “cooking is not just a chore that has to be done, it is an opportunity to escape your realities, relieve stress and free your mind. Seniors will be encouraged to be creative while finding joy in cooking in a fun-filled social environment. After all, when seniors cook their own meals, they are able to con trol their dietary intake while eating healthy and trying new recipes. Our chefs will provide instruction on how to purchase, prepare, cook, and serve a meal. “With a joyful heart, I thank God for AARP,” Hib bler said. “I believe that AARP has been sent to be an instrument of change by improving communities and making them better places for everyone to live, work and play as they age.”

Whether you’re entertaining guests, hosting a houseful of kids or simply enjoying a weekend at home, a DIY popcorn bar provides a tasty and joyful way for children and adults alike to create their own version of an afternoon snack. Just set out a few ingredients and watch the fun unfold.

DIY Popcorn Bar

FAMILY AFEATURESsan

important life skill, learning to cook and becoming familiar with kitchen basics can be an exciting adventure for kids from toddlers to teens. Using a delicious childhood favorite like popcorn as the key ingredient at the center of your lessons can spur interest andAlongenthusiasm.withunderstanding measurements and safety, teaching your children how to make simple recipes also offers opportunities to bond and make memories that can last a lifetime. Popcorn is a snack food associated with good times and it’s versatile enough to encourage creativity. While it’s important to start with easy techniques that introduce future chefs to the culinary world, it’s also helpful to ensure they’ll enjoy eating their first creations so they’ll be eager for more time in the kitchen. As a whole grain that’s 100% unprocessed with no additional additives, hidden ingredients or GMOs, air-popped popcorn has only 30 calories per cup and offers a whole grain that provides energy-producing complex carbohydrates. Because whole grains are important sources of nutrients such as zinc, magnesium, B vitamins and fiber, you can instill the values of nutritious snacking all while having some fun. These simple yet delicious recipes and tips can help you get your kids involved in the kitchen.

Measure Ingredients A key component to recipes of all difficulty levels, teaching measurements from teaspoons and tablespoons to cups, ounces and more is valuable know ledge. Start with the basics like these Simple Popcorn S’mores that call for popcorn and graham crackers to be measured out in cups so your child can focus on one unit of measurement. Then, if little ones are helping, have an adult melt the chocolate and drizzle for a family-favorite snack. Get Messy Learning how to create and explore is often productive (and fun) when children can get their hands dirty. Sweet ’n’ Salty Popcorn Pretzel Sticks are a perfect canvas for letting kiddos work directly with the ingredients as they can roll pretzels in peanut butter, add sprinkles to their heart’s content and press popcorn into their newfound favorite treat. Find more kid-friendly recipes to get the whole family involved in the kitchen at popcorn.org.

Encourage Creativity Making learning fun is an important introduction to the world of cooking.

Starting with a versatile base ingredient like popcorn that’s naturally low in fat and calories, encourage your child to get creative with a recipe like Popa-rific Popcorn Balls. With simple variations like adding food coloring or mixing in candies, nuts or dried fruit, it’s a colorful way for little ones to build confidence in their skills.

Pop-a-rific Popcorn Balls Yield: 14 balls 3 quarts popped popcorn, unsalted 1 package (1 pound) marshmallows 1/4 cup butter or margarine Place popped popcorn in large bowl. In large saucepan over low heat, cook marshmallows and butter or margarine until melted and smooth. Pour over popcorn, tossing gently to mix well. Cool 5 minutes. Butter hands well and form into 2 1/2-inch balls. Variations: To color popcorn balls, add 3-4 drops of food coloring to smooth marshmallow mixture. Mix well to dist ribute color evenly then pour over popcorn as Mixinstructed.incandies, nuts or dried fruit after mixing popcorn and melted marshmallows. Stir to distribute then form into balls. Place nonpareils in shallow bowl or plate. Roll popcorn balls in nonpareils after forming.
