Close friends confirm that Aretha Franklin is 'gravely ill', as family gathers around Queen of Soul Shock and concern have spread around the music world overnight following reports that soul singing great Aretha Franklin is "gravely ill." Franklin, 76, is reportedly surrounded by her family and close friends in Detroit. The family is asking for prayers and privacy. A source who has known Franklin since the start of her career told British paper The Telegraph that Franklin's absence from the spotlight since the end of last year was "uncharacteristic." The news was broken by Roger Friedman, a friend of Franklin's, on the entertainment website Showbiz411. "Something's been happening with her health," a source told The Telegraph. "She's missed several high

profile public engagements in recent months, including the funeral of Dennis Edwards, who was one of her lovers. It's uncharacteristic of her." Edwards, who was a member of The Temptations, inspired Franklin's song Day Dreaming. In February, reports said she was unable to attend the memorial due to illness but sent her condolences to be read to the family. Evrod Cassimy, a reporter in Detroit and a close friend of the family, posted on Twitter that he had spoken to Franklin's family members this morning. "I am so saddened to report that the Queen of Soul and my good friend, Aretha Franklin, is gravely ill," he posted. "I’ll have more details as I’m al-

Jarron Moreland and Alize Smith: Five fast facts you need to know Jarron Moreland and Alize Smith, two African American men, were murdered, dismembered, chained, and thrown into a pond in Oklahoma, authorities say, and they’ve accused four members of a local white family of being involved in the slayings and/or their aftermath. The racial dynamic has led some people to call the murders a “modern day lynching” on social media, although authorities said they don’t think the men’s race was the motive for their murders, which allegedly stemmed from a botched Craigslist deal involving a gun. The two victims, who were both only 21-yearsold, were reported missing by loved ones in April 2018. According to The Associated Press, the bodies “were found dismembered and chained to cinder blocks in an Oklahoma City pond.” Here’s what you need to know: 1. Four members of an Oklahoma family were accused in connection with the gruesome deaths. The suspects under arrest in the double homicide are three members of the same family and the boyfriend of the family’s matriarch. The two victims were shot before they were dismembered and tossed in the pond, authorities believe. Authorities allege that they found the van used in the shooting at the family’s home. The scene was grisly. They allegedly found “cleaning products and a power washer around the vehicle,” “dried blood spatter on the ceiling of the van” and “a bucket of water with a chainsaw bar inside and soaking in the water along with several jigsaw blades,” court documents obtained by a local TV station allege. Authorities have accused Kevin Garcia-Boettler, 22; Garcia-Boettler’s 16-yearold brother, Brett Boettler; their mother, Crystal Rachelle Boettler, 40; and Johnny

Shane Barker, 43, in connection with the men’s deaths. Barker is the boyfriend of Crystal Boettler, according to KFOR-TV. According to reports, the teen is accused of being the shooter, and the mother was charged with allegedly being an accessory after the fact. Moreland and Smith were missing for four days when their bodies were discovered, the AP reported, adding that the murders occurred in Moore, a suburb of Oklahoma City. Barker, the brothers’ mother’s boyfriend, is accused of helping the two “remove the bodies, cover them with tarps, and attached cinder blocks around them with chains before dumping them in a lake,” it was reported. It was alleged the victims’ clothes were removed. 2. The slayings allegedly occurred during a ‘Craigslist deal gone bad’ Alize Smith and Jarron Moreland disappeared “after a shooting in the parking lot of a Crest Foods near 12th Street and Eastern Avenue.” The two brothers accused in the crime “arranged a meeting over Craigslist to buy a gun from Smith and Moreland,” AP reports. It quickly went sour. “The brothers told police they thought one of the victims was packing a gun and turned around and shot them several times,” KFOR-TV alleged. “There was apparently going to be a sale of a gun, possibly off of Craigslist when the two victims entered the vehicle,” said Moore Police Sgt. Jeremy Lewis. “The suspects claimed they heard a gun being racked or cocked. At that point, one of those individuals fired at the two victims that entered the van and killed them both at that time.” A GoFundMe page established to help Moreland’s family says it all started with the Craigslist deal. “Hello. As you may already know, my

The victims: Alize Smith and Jarron Moreland. brother Jarron and another individual by the name of Alize Smith were murdered and abducted as the result of what I, myself, would call a cold blooded unnecessary craigslist deal ‘gone wrong',” the summary on the GoFundMe page states. The brother wrote that Moreland was a young father. “My brother's funeral was April 28th, just two days after his son Jarron Jr.’s 6th birthday. His funeral has been paid for by some sort of victims fund provided to us by the state of Oklahoma. At this point the only thing we as a family are worried about is taking care of Jarron Jr. in Jarron Sr.’s absence. Anything helps and everything is appreciated, Thank you for your time and if you choose to donate, thank you for your donation,” he wrote. 3. The prosecutor doesn’t plan to seek race-related charges and Moreland’s mother says the murder ‘ripped my heart out’ Cleveland County prosecutor Greg Mashburn told the Associated Press that “he does not plan to seek additional charges related to race.” “We definitely explored that, and the evidence absolutely shows that this was not racially motivated,” Mashburn told the wire service. That’s not the theme on Twitter, though, where people are referring to the homicides as a lynching. That’s not a term authorities have attached to the case, though.

Crystal Boettler, who was born in 1978, was previously accused of multiple counts of violation of the compulsory education act (truancy). Fourteen charges are listed in the court records; they all resulted in acquittal or dismissal. The court records, from 2011, state, “The court believes state should offer proof beyond a reasonable doubt as to defendant’s willful failure to cause or compel minor child to attend and comply with schools rules) in this case minor child is clearly beyond this defendant’s parental control.” She was also accused of being a meth dealer in 2009, but the charge was dismissed upon request of the state. A second drug charge involving PCP in that case resulted in a deferred disposition. There are other cases under a different first name with Crystal Boettler listed as the alias in Oklahoma court records. On Facebook, Brett Boettler, 16, who listed himself as being in high school, shared a video of a cartoon character shooting an airsoft gun and also shared a video of an Oklahoma police chase. The victims also had some prior contacts with the criminal justice system. A bench warrant was issued for Smith in a drug case that was pending at the time of his death; he was to have been sentenced in that case in April. Moreland was convicted of possessing a firearm in 2015.

(Continued from pg. 2) ago and asked me to tell you please don’t believe this news that was trending. Have a good day." The singer, best known for hits such as Respect and I Say a Little Prayer, canceled concerts in 2010 while recovering from a surgery that removed an unspecified tumor and, Franklin said, would "add 15 to 20 years" to her life. However, illness has affected her performing career over the past decade, with shows canceled in 2013. Franklin said in August of that year that she had undergone a "miraculous" recovery, but continued to drop

The deaths have left behind grieving families. “When it first happened, I told the detective that if my son don’t call me by a certain time, my son is hurt bad or he is dead,” Kennetha Moreland, the mother of one of the two victims, told KFOR-TV. Jarron and Alize were tortured, she believes, and she told the television station, “Felt like somebody ripped my heart out of my chest.” 4. Alize was remembered as ‘the sweetest person you could wish for’ Loved ones also paid tribute to Alize Ramon Smith. “He was the sweetest person you could wish for,” said Alivia Smith, Alize’s 12-yearold sister. “He was the best person to me.” Raquel Hall, Alize Smith’s aunt, also commemorated Alize, saying, “He had this goofy laugh that we all still can see and hear. And we want people to know that he really tried. He had a few problems in his life but he had a great support system and we were all there for him.” Alize’s great aunt wrote on Facebook to the many people offering support, “Thank you all for the outpouring of support and prayers. Much needed and appreciated. We can feel the prayers of so many being lifted for our family.” 5. Members of the suspect family have prior contacts with the criminal justice system

Johnny Shane Barker has a criminal history in Cleveland County, Oklahoma, according to court records. In 2006, he was convicted of second-degree burglary and drug offenses. He described himself as “self-employed” on Facebook. Kevin Garcia-Boettler also has a past drug case in that county from 2015. Court records say the disposition was deferred.

The Counseling Corner

Titus 2 Mentoring (Week 3) Most churches are struggling with the problem of the generational gap. It is incumbent that churches address this issue because it is a real one. As the gap widens, it will continue to drive away talented and gifted young people and progressive thinkers. The key is to recognize there is a gap and then take steps to begin closing the gap. Many suggestions have been offered, however, Thom Rainer’s Bridging Generational Gaps in Churches proposed some practical and attainable suggestions: • Intentionally invite older, long term members to attend church’s membership class. This way you can introduce older members to newer members. Older members can assist by telling some of the church history.

Not only will the new members appreciate the older members but the older members will be reintroduced to the church’s vision and doctrine. • Include testimonies in worship service. Church members know the testimonies of only a few of their members; but there is a large number of people whose stories others do not know. This problem can be corrected by inviting selected members to share their testimony during worship service and be sure to vary the generations. • Start a cross-generational prayer ministry. Unite the youth and young adult ministry with senior adult ministry by connecting prayer partners from each generation. Imagine the results when senior adult mem-

bers are linked to a younger woman and they pray for each other. You have no choice but to get to know the member and their families. • Start a grand-parenting ministry. This ministry recognizes there are older members in churches whose children have moved away and young families who live a distance away from their parents and grandparents. What they have in common is both miss their families. Developing a grand-parenting ministry brings these groups together to support one another. • Run a multi-generational book club for women, allowing members of each generation to take turns selecting the next book. Be sure to select times for meetings that are convenient for

working mothers. • Develop multi-generational small group bible study. This can consist of a short-term Bible study group, topical studies on areas of interest to women, or leadership groups. Regardless of the type of group, plan times of teaching and fellowship to facilitate relationships. • Do social ministry together. Young people want to do hands-on, relevant, transforming ministry. They want to feed the hungry, stand up for those who are caught up in human trafficking, and other social justice issues. • Mentor a younger woman and encourage her to mentor someone else. • Appoint a young adult leader to oversee the se-

nior adult ministry. Why? It brings the generations together. Seek a young adult or middle-aged woman who can lead and learn from the older believers. When generations learn from each other, the church will be stronger. On Tuesday, August 7, 2018, the City of Milwaukee along with the Bader Foundation and Alderwoman Milele Coggs held a special street renaming ceremony at North 4th Street and West North Avenue to honor the late civil rights advocate Vel Phillips. The intersection will now be known as North Vel R. Phillips Ave. The renaming celebration was part of the "6th Annual Bronzeville Week," which was dedicated to celebration of the art and culture of the African American community in Milwaukee's historic neighborhood. "The street's renaming serves as a memorial to Vel Phillips' advocacy for social justice, fair housing and civil rights," said Alderwoman Milele A. Coggs. Pictured at the event are (from left) Rep. Everyday Health

Get vaccinated. It could save your life You may not know that you need vaccines throughout your lifetime. Vaccines are very important to your health. Here are a few reasons why you should get vaccinated. You may be at risk for serious diseases. Each year, thousands of people in the United States get sick from diseases that could be prevented by vaccines. Some people have to go to the hospital. And some even die. Even if you got all your vaccines as a child, the protection from some vaccines can wear off over time. You might also be at risk for other diseases because of your age, job, lifestyle, travel or health conditions you may have. You can’t do much when you get sick. Even healthy people can get sick enough to miss work or school. If you’re sick, you might not be able to take care of yourself, your family or other responsibilities you may have. Vaccines help protect your health. Vaccines can help lower

vaccine every year to protect against seasonal flu. Every 10 years, you should get the Td/Tdap vaccine to protect against tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis (whooping cough). Based on your age, health conditions, vaccines you got as a child and other reasons, you may need more

your chance of getting sick. Vaccines work with your body’s natural defense to lower the chances of getting certain diseases and suffering complications from them. Vaccines lower your chance of spreading certain diseases. There are many things you want to pass on to your loved ones. A vaccine preventable disease is not one of them. Infants, older adults and people with weakened immune systems are very vulnerable to diseases that could be easily prevented by vaccines. Vaccines are one of the safest ways to pro-

tect your health. Vaccine side effects are usually mild and go away on their own. Severe side effects are very rare. If you have any symptoms that concern you after you get vaccinated, call your doctor. Where you can get vaccinated. You can get vaccines at doctors’ offices, pharmacies, some workplaces, community health clinics, health departments and other locations. To find a vaccine provider near you, go to vaccine. healthmap.org. Vaccines you need. All adults should get a flu

Change your mindset to change your life! By: Priscilla Q. Williams, RN As an oncology nurse for over 10 years, I have seen patients at their absolute worse. I have been in the room with patients where doctors have given them the prognosis of only months or weeks to live. Over the years this has given me such a grateful attitude toward life. One of the things I learned over the years is that patients who have a positive outlook on their condition have a greater chance of survival. When patients give up and automatically think death sentence when they hear the word cancer, it decreases their chances of doing well. Research shows that positive thinking impacts illness recovery and healing. I want to share with you five strategies to help shift your focus, so you can shift your mind to better health. Have an attitude of gratitude When you are grateful for where you are in life and thankful for breath and strength, it’s hard to stay defeated. Make of list of all the things you are grateful for including family, friends, a place to live, food to eat and eyes to see. After you make this list, I know this will shift your focus. Don’t focus on the illness, medication or even the prognosis. But be in the moment and focus on all the things you have right at this very second. This will lift your spirits and make you feel better. Support is key It is very important to have people in your circle who have your back. People who will uplift you and help you see the big picture of why you are still here. It’s also important to have a community. This could be a support group, a church community, or an online community. This will allow you to see other people in the same situation which lets you know that you are not in this alone. Meditation and prayer When you take time to

meditate and pray you are allowing yourself the space to know that the situation you face is not over. This means you have hope that things can change for you and that you’re not giving up. This also means that you are taking time to get in spiritual alignment with your source. So, you can have clarity and revelation about how you feel and what lies ahead for you. Mediate in a quiet place and just think about yourself being healed and whole. See yourself where you want to be and not where you currently are. Listen to inspirational messages I listen to positive inspirational messages often and it has encouraged me so many times. Inspirational messages give you a glimpse of hope and encouragement. It allows you to hear other people’s stories and to be encouraged by what they have overcome in life. I have seen many patients listen to inspiration messages while receiving treatments or going through procedures and this has allowed patients to feel eased or relaxed. Do the things you love When you are going through a tough time or illness, it’s very important to find the things you love to do. If you love to write, read novels or paint make sure you keep doing it. This is important to help you switch your focus from your current situation to doing something that brings you joy and peace. When you do things you love, it not only makes you feel better, but it helps keep you in good spirits.

No more “us versus them.” At the 2018 summit, we plan to explore the shared experience of poverty. In some ways, poverty feels the same whether you live up north or in the heart of Wisconsin’s big cities. Participants will be challenged to examine national, regional and local systems and consider how they shape policy and our collective response. By identifying the structural underpinnings of poverty, we believe a well-informed and honest discussion can take place. Ultimately, we hope this leads to more effective anti-poverty policies and strategies.

The answers to those questions and more will be discussed as The Social Development Commission hosts C. Nicole Mason its annual Summit On Poverty in partnership with WISA Young Girl’s Journey from CAP’s annual Poverty MatNothing to Something in Amer- ters! conference. Grown-Up Tomato Mac and Cheese

FAMILY FEATURES

ack-to-school season means plenty of evening hours spent completing homework, attending extracurricular activities and preparing to repeat the school-day routine the next day. For many families, having time to prepare and cook quality, nutritious meals can be next to impossible. Instead of choosing between valuable family time and hours spent in the kitchen, RAGÚ blogger, fitness enthusiast and busy mom Jamie Krauss Hess recommends stocking up on go-to pantry staples you feel good about and including them in quick, nutritious recipes everyone can enjoy together. Try recipes such as Mini Turkey Sloppy Joes, which swap out beef for ground turkey to provide a flavorful alternative while offering a special twist to a classic family favorite. Quinoa Penne with Savory Tomato-Basil Sauce can hit the spot with just a handful of ingredients. Or, if the little ones clamor for a more kid-friendly dish and the adults don’t mind a throwback to childhood, Grown-Up Tomato Mac and Cheese can provide the best of both worlds. All three recipes take less than an hour to make and feature RAGÚ Simply pasta sauces, which are made with 100 percent olive oil and contain no added sugar. They’re available in four varieties including: Traditional, Chunky Marinara, Chunky Garden Vegetable and Flavored with Meat. By using simple ingredients like California vine-ripened tomatoes, carrots, bell peppers, zucchini, onions and spices, the result is a tastetempting sauce with recipe versatility. Find more family-pleasing and simple-toprepare recipes ideal for busy school nights at ragu.com.

Mini Turkey Sloppy Joes

Recipe courtesy of Honey and Birch Prep time: 10 minutes Cook time: 20 minutes Servings: 8 1 teaspoon extra-virgin olive oil 1 cup onion, diced 3 cloves garlic, minced 1 pound ground turkey 1 cup carrots, finely diced 1 medium green pepper, diced 1 medium red pepper, diced 1 jar (24 ounces) RAGÚ Simply Chunky Marinara Sauce 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce 1 teaspoon ground mustard

1/2 teaspoon kosher salt 1/2 teaspoon black pepper 8 mini buns In large skillet over medium heat, heat extra-virgin olive oil. When hot, add onion and garlic; sauté until onion is translucent. Add ground turkey to pan. Break up meat and stir frequently until meat is browned. Add carrots, green pepper and red pepper. Cook 5 minutes so vegetables can begin to soften. Add marinara sauce, Worcestershire sauce, ground mustard, kosher salt and black pepper. Stir and bring to boil. Reduce heat so it simmers; partially cover pan. Cook 10 minutes. Serve on mini buns.

Prep time: 10 minutes Cook time: 30 minutes Servings: 8 1 box (16 ounces) gemelli pasta 4 cups water 2 1/2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded, divided 1/2 cup (2 ounces) Pecorino Romano cheese, grated 1 tablespoon corn starch 1 can (5 ounces) evaporated milk 1 jar (24 ounces) RAGÚ Simply Traditional Pasta Sauce 2 teaspoons cracked black pepper In large pot, combine pasta and water. Cook over medium-high heat 20-22 minutes, or until pasta is done, stirring occasionally. In bowl, combine 2 cups cheddar cheese, Pecorino Romano cheese and corn starch. Reduce heat to medium; stir milk, cheese mixture and sauce together with cooked pasta. Cook 5-7 minutes, or until cheese is melted and mixture is thickened, stirring frequently. Sprinkle with remaining cheddar cheese and pepper; serve immediately. Tip: This stovetop method eliminates the need to drain the pasta after cooking. The starchy pasta water gets stirred in and helps create an extra-rich sauce. Elevate this dish by sprinkling crushed Parmesan cheese crisps on top before serving.

Quinoa Penne with Savory Tomato-Basil Sauce

Prep time: 10 minutes Cook time: 8-10 minutes Servings: 6 12 ounces (about 5 cups) uncooked quinoa penne pasta 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 large shallot, chopped 4 cloves garlic, thinly sliced 1/4 cup oil-packed sundried tomatoes, drained and chopped 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika 1 jar (24 ounces) RAGÚ Simply Chunky Garden Vegetable Pasta Sauce 1 1/4 cups tightly packed fresh basil leaves, chopped, divided Cook pasta as directed on package. In large skillet over medium heat, heat oil. Add shallots; cook 5-7 minutes, or until lightly browned, stirring frequently. Add garlic, tomatoes and paprika; cook and stir 1 minute. Stir in sauce and basil, reserving small amount of basil for garnish. Drain pasta; add to sauce mixture. Mix well. Cook 1-2 minutes until heated through. Sprinkle with reserved basil before serving. Tip: For extra protein, add 1 pound sliced, grilled chicken when stirring in pasta.
