Garfield Ave. While McCutchen was in the middle of the Brewers' game against the St. Louis Cardinals, Bernie Brewer, Barrelman and a virtual 'who's who' of Black Milwaukee were there in his place to greet the employees and customers of Garfield's 502. The program was developed by the Brewers to thank fans and sup port small businesses. Players select popular restaurants and water ing holes where Brewers fans typically gather and surprise customers by covering the tab for the night. LeRoy Butler promised to be brief and the former Pack ers safety was a man of his word. After a 16-year wait, Butler needed roughly five minutes on Saturday, August 6. 2022 to humor those in attendance at Tom Benson Stadium in Canton, OH, and acknowl edge the dozens of family, friends, teachers, coaches and former teammates who helped him become the 357th member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. It was a fitting conclusion to a 12-year NFL career that saw Butler become the first defensive back to record 20 interceptions and 20 sacks. To this day, Butler is one of just four players (and two safeties) with at least 35 INTs and 20 sacks. After unveiling his bust alongside his father-in-law, Charlton Jordan, Butler opened his speech by con gratulating Hall of Fame bust sculptor Blair Buswell for a job well done and thanking him for the "haircut." The playful Butler also made quite possibly the first-ever DJ Khaled refer ence at the enshrinement cer emony before expressing his gratitude for what it means to be the 28th former Packers player or executive in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. "When you play for the Green Bay Packers, a lot of doors open up," Butler said. "When you win a Super Bowl, all the doors open up. When you make the Hall of Fame, football heaven opens up. Want to know why? It's rareAscompany."quicklyas Butler could get out the words, "Growing up in Jacksonville," the Pack ers' four-time All-Pro was immediately met by a del uge of "DUVAL" cries from devoted Jaguars fans, whose team played in Thursday's Hall of Fame game. Humble beginnings in Jacksonville helped Butler appreciate everything he did have, thanks to his mother, Eunice, who made her chil dren "think rich every day" and reminded them "it's not about what you have on or what you have – it's how you act."Growing up in the projects was one thing, but Butler also struggled to walk until he was 5 after being born with clubbed feet, which needed to be broken in order to grow Duringproperly.those difficult times, Butler leaned on his siblings, Vicki, Darion, Mi chael and Doug, and remains grateful to them to this day. There also was his uncle, Charles Durham, who was responsible for getting Butler involved in sports.

Former OVP director Arnitta Holliman (left) and newly appointed OVP director Alderman Ashanti Hamilton.

Addressing the issue of whether the money is being spent correctly, Holliman said that the "scapegoating an office of less than 10 staff members and that current ly receives no city tax-levy funding is not only ill-in formed, but dangerous. "It arranges a measure that all but guarantees failure for the next Director and OVP for the foreseeable future. A public health approach to violence prevention involves cross-sector partnerships that require support and invest ment. Unfortunately, OVP has never received adequate investment from the city, and for the past six years has had to pursue grants outside of city funding to support and

Mayor Johnson invited Hamilton to fill the position and Hamilton ac cepted. The position is not elected."Ido understand that our previous directors put in a lot of work, in helping peo ple understand what violence as a public health issue is," said Hamilton. "We want to build on that work, we want to expand it, we want to en sure that we are measuring whether or not what we're doing is actually having an impact for the residents that live in this city." The office also only has 10 staff members, and reports to the mayor and the health commissioner. Just-fired director of Mil waukee's Office of Violence Prevention, Arnitta Holli man, described the mayor and commissioner's actions as "unwarranted and un professional" in a blistering statement on Monday.

For Butler, the timing was perfect. He credits his moth er, Eunice, for his positivity, patience, and helping him craft his speech prior to her passing in November 2016. Taking one final breath, with his newly minted Hall of Fame bust to his left side, Butler smiled and reflected on his path to Canton. "Sixteen years is a long time," said Butler, paus ing for a moment. "But it's worth the wait."

Butler's life changed dra matically once he was drafted by the Packers. Butler voiced his appreciation for former team president Bob Harlan, public relations director Lee Remmel and head coach Mike Holmgren, whom he also hopes "one day will be upInhere."closing, Butler thanked Packers fans while reminding them "without you, there is no LeRoy Butler." The same could be said for his icon ic Lambeau Leap, which he founded on Dec. 26, 1993, after his 25-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown against the Los Angeles Raid ers. Finally, Butler thanked his Packers teammates in the ultimate team sport, joking that "where else can you go … where I have a bad game every now and then – don't Google it – and my other 10 teammates carried me. My teammates, I love them."

A Better Day

LeRoy Butler (Continued form pg. 2) Today, Butler's world re volves around his wife and co-presenter, Genesis, and his five girls, Sharon (who couldn't attend because she was giving birth to Butler's fifth grandchild), L'Ore al, Gabrielle, Dani, Maria, Siera, and son LeRoy IV. Butler admitted he wouldn't be here if it weren't for his teachers and coaches, especially legendary Florida high school football coach Corky Rogers and Bobby Bowden, who recruited But ler to Florida State despite his socioeconomic and academic circumstances."CoachBobby Bowden drives into the inner city, the projects. I said, 'Coach, you can't just drive in here. You gotta ease your way down,'" Butler recalled. "(He said) I'm telling Ms. Butler, 'I'm giving your baby a scholar ship.'"

For centuries black peo ple in the USA have prayed for the so-called better day. The day when black people could be free to live and do what they pleased. This bet ter day was supposed to have taken place in June of 1865. The better day was suppos edly revamped in the 1960’s with the end of segregation. Looking back from 2022 you have to wonder if black people even know what a better day would consist of. More importantly, was the better day concept one pro grammed into black people by white people to keep them complacent?Whatwas a better day sup posed to look like for black people, who are now African Americans, in the USA? Is a better day one where Af rican Americans can date/ marry white people? Is the better day one where African Americans can be Demo crats, and even become Pres ident? Who came up with this concept of waiting for a better day anyway? Was there any plan designed by African Americans to even conceptu alize what a better day would consist of? In 2022 African Americans should be living The American Dream, and some are. Yet, for many Af rican Americans The Dream seems to be a nightmare and once again the better day has beenThepostponed.betterday is here, if it consisted of interracial mar riage in the USA. A Gallup poll taken in 2021 stated that 94 percent of whites ap proved of African American and white marriage. How does marrying white people make African American life better? Interracial marriage may be salvation to an igno rant fool attempting to have some kids with “good hair.” Honestly though, how does interracial marriage make life for African Americans better in the USA? If this is a covert plan by the Afri can American elite to wipe out all white people via in terbreeding, then it makes sense. It is a stupid plan, but it makes sense. If this breed ing scheme exists, you have to wonder if it wasn’t created by some white geneticist to refresh Caucasian DNA. If the better day consisted of African Americans hold ing positions in government, then that day has come. We won’t waste time detailing the number of African Amer ican politicians in the USA. Suffice it to say that there are enough to check the box on African American politi cians being part of the bet ter day. African Americans have enjoyed an openly black President and a few low key mulattoes if you believe J.A. Rodgers. There is even a col ored Vice President right now. Has this infiltration of US government by African Americans made the USA Shangri-La? You know the answer to that. Even when there were are so-called Af rican Americans residing in the White House, look at the name of the place, White House. I guess the better day has again been pushed back because Congress is busy with other matters. Was the concept of a better day something white people put into African American heads to keep them singing, 'We Shall Overcome'? The previous question generates thought. If you keep peo ple looking for a future bet ter day, you can dominate and manipulate them in the now. When the future day does come they will still be looking ahead. These peo ple won’t see they have been duped like a donkey chasing a carrot on a string. The don key never catches the carrot until he has performed the task and by that time the car rot is shriveled up. Is this the plight of the African Amer ican in the USA? By the time the so-called better day comes will it be when there is nothing left, or everyone is biracial? What would a better day for African American look like? Would this better day be one where they hold hands with whites and every other race who has spit in their faces and sing, 'We Are The World'? African Ameri cans have to figure what the better day is, make it happen or they will be in for a hard day's night. Frank James IV © gmail.combeingfrankwithfrank@2022

Serena Williams announces her retirement from tennis Tennis legend Serena Wil liams announced her retire ment in a Vogue article pub lished Tuesday, August 9, 2022.“Ihave never liked the word ‘retirement',” Williams wrote. “Maybe the best word to describe what I’m up to is ‘evolution.’ I’m here to tell you that I’m evolving away from tennis, toward other things that are important to me.”Williams, who turns 41 next month, has 73 career singles titles, 23 career dou bles titles and over $94-mil lion in career winnings. Williams is widely hailed as one of the greatest athletes of all time. In her Vogue piece, she noted that some of her detractors point out that she hasn’t won the most Grand Slam titles in women’s tennis history,“Therehowever.arepeople who say I’m not the GOAT because I didn’t pass Margaret Court’s record of 24 grand slam ti tles, which she achieved be fore the ‘open era’ that began in 1968,” Williams wrote. “I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want that record.” She said she will retire after the U.S. Open, which will run from late August into September. A victory there would tie her with Court’s Grand Slam record. “I don’t know if I will be ready to win New York. But I’m going to try,” Williams wrote about the tournament, which is played in Queens. She has counted spon sorships from companies including Nike, Audemars Piguet, Away, Beats, Bumble, Gatorade, Gucci, Lincoln, Michelob, Nintendo, Wilson Sporting Goods, and Procter andNikeGamble.saidit would contin ue working with Williams. “Serena Williams redefined what it means to be a true champion. Her legacy tran scends sport and has inspired generations,” the company said. “We look forward to continuing our long-stand ing partnership with her. And, we thank her for all she has done and will do in the future.”Williams focused on her family in the announcement, writing that her nearly fiveyear-old daughter wants to be an older sister. Williams is married to Reddit founder Alexis Ohanian. “I never wanted to have to choose between tennis and a family. I don’t think it’s fair,” Williams wrote. “If I were a guy, I wouldn’t be writing this because I’d be out there playing and winning while my wife was doing the phys ical labor of expanding our family.”Sheadded in an Instagram post Tuesday: “I have to fo cus on being a mom, my spiritual goals and finally dis covering a different, but just exciting Serena. I’m gonna relish these next few weeks.”

Professionally, she looks to expand Serena Ventures, a small investment firm of six people that was one of the first investors in MasterClass. Her firm raised $111-million in outside financing this year. Williams wrote that only 2 percent of venture capital goes to women and that “in order for us to change that, more people who look like me need to be in that posi tion, giving money back to themselves.” Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. Milwaukee, WI 53212

Children learn to be stron ger through experience. Here are some tips to help you support your kids. 1. Practice your morning routine Go through all the steps of the morning, as well as the timing involved to get to school on time. Help younger kids prep by setting out clothes the night before.Make sure the alarm is set correctly. If the alarm is on the phone, make sure it’s not going to light up or make sounds, and turn the phone face down.

• “What was the most em barrassing thing?” You want to keep a pulse on what’s working and what isn’t.Remember that sharing goes both ways. Be prepared to role model by answering those questions for yourself with your kids. You“ can explain to them how you handled stressful moments in your own life,” Dr. Rome said. 4. Take extra care for a child with anxiety or depression There’s a difference be tween a child with first-day nerves and one dealing with anxiety or depression. If your child has these par ticular challenges, partner with the school. You want to prep the teachers and care team at the school to know your child is at risk. “For those who get seri ous panic attacks, you might teach them to ‘breathe a square.’ You can imagine a square with four sides, and you breathe in two sides, and breathe out two sides. And then the sides can go slower and slower,” Dr. Rome ex plained.Shealso suggests offering the teacher insights about your“Forchild.example, you might explain to the teacher, ‘If my kid seems like he’s tuned out, calling him out can make him more anxious. Here’s what has worked for us to help him tune in,’” Dr. Rome said. Some possible supports for a child under stress could in •clude:A gentle touch on the shoulder as the teacher goes by.

“Use your vehicle as a vehi cle of communication,” Dr. Rome recommended. “Kids may feel it’s safer to talk to mom when she is driving and not staring at you too much. It allows for casual conversa tion.”Make it a daily habit to de brief. Ask your child about their day, every day. Here are ways Dr. Rome suggests framing the conver •sation:“Tell me about your day. What was the best part? What was the worst about it?”

5. Don’t neglect the basics: sleep and diet Make sure your children are getting enough sleep when they go back to school, especially if you’re lax about bedtime over the summer. Most kids need between 9 to 9 1/2 hours of sleep every night. For teens, caffeine can be a major issue.

• Partnering with a teacher to read that child’s cues.

“They need to be in the habit of eating before school, especially for energy that will last until lunchtime,” Dr. Rome said. And remember, it’s im portant to take pride in your child’s growth and develop ment.“For instance, when we think about a child learning to walk, here’s the parent beckoning and there’s the kid, who in the exact mo ment when they are reaching for the parent prove that they don’t need that parent to take those first steps,” Dr. Rome said. So, in the same way, enjoy your child’s latest milestone as they step into the class room — as a parent, take pride.

Five tips to help your child with back-to-school anxiety Nervousness and anxiety are normal It’s that time again. As summer winds down, we find ourselves wandering along store aisles, kids in tow, clutching the new school supply lists. Are your kids excited about a new school year? Are they nervous? Do you think they might have some back-toschool anxiety? To help your child with these various emotions, it’s important to understand where they’re coming from, said pediatrician Ellen Rome, MD.“Kids can feel pressure to handle all the changes,” said Dr. Rome. “They might wonder, Where am I going to be? Am I going to get lost? What’s the class going to be like? What’s the teacher go ing to be like? Will the work be a lot harder?”

When it comes to diet, kids really need a good breakfast, lunch and dinner, with or without a couple of snacks.

There may be anticipation of a schoolyard bully from the year before or a worry about new friends and new situations. They may still harbor fears of the impact of COVID-19 on family mem bers or themselves. Dr. Rome provides tips on how to help your kids with back-to-school jitters. Back-to-school tips Of course, some of the les sons of school have little to do with grades. With each day of school, your child is developing and practicing social“Theyskills.are learning how to greet adults and teachers, as well as how to play with classmates and navigate the playground,” Dr. Rome said. School offers a chance for your child to build skills for success in these day-to-day activities.“Youwant your child to build their strengths — to successfully overcome a fear and come out on the other side, having succeeded,” Dr. Rome said. “You’re trying to get them into what we call a growth mindset, which is the ability to adapt, develop and work their hardest.”

3. Encourage good commu nication To help kids open up to you, remember to first put your phone away. “We often have our own ‘personal enslavement devic es.’ When your kid wants to talk, even if it’s an inconve nient time, practice putting your phone away,” advised Dr. Rome. “It not only helps you give them your full at tention; it also models good behavior.”Also, don’t waste precious time in the car.

2. Do a school walkthrough If your child is particularly anxious about starting a new school year, you can ask the school if you can do a dry walk-through.“Forthesekids, it can help to get there a few days before school starts,” said Dr. Rome. “Together, you can find their locker, classrooms and bath rooms. You can help your child navigate that first day of school by demystifying it.”

“Between coffee drinks, soda or, worse yet, energy drinks with very high doses of caffeine, kids don’t real ize that caffeine is a 24-hour drug that can interrupt their sleep,” Dr. Rome noted. And having rules about where and when cell phones are charged can help yearround, so tweens and teens aren’t up texting or on social media into the wee hours of the night and then trying to get up for school. “Also, start adjusting their bedtime from summer to school schedule ideally a month before school starts,” said Dr. Rome. “If your teen has been going to bed be tween midnight and 2 a.m., all summer, by early August, move that time up an hour a week until they’re going to sleep and waking up early enough to manage the transi tion back to school.”

Celebrating Black Business Month 2022: How to find support as a black entrepreneur, or lend your support as an ally

• Month#NationalBlackBusiness

(Continued on pg. 14)

• #BlackBusinessMonth #SupportBlackBusiness #SupportBlackowned #Blackmakers

This August marks the 19th anniversary of Nation al Black Business Month, which honors black Ameri cans’ long history of entre preneurship, as well as black business owners’ contribu tions to their local commu nities and the United States economy.Theannual observance took root when engineering entrepreneur Frederick E. Jordan found himself reflect ing on the challenges he’d faced financing his business as a black entrepreneur. In 2004, Jordan partnered with John William Templeton, president and executive ed itor of scholarly publishing company eAccess Corp, to start National Black Business Month to recognize and em power black business owners across the US. As part of our mission at Invoice2go, a Bill.com com pany, to create a global and inclusive community, we want to highlight the con tributions of black business owners and share resources where you can find support as a black entrepreneur, or lend your support as an ally. A closer look at the stats National Black Business Month is an opportunity to celebrate black entrepreneurs while recognizing the ineq uities they still face. If you’re a business owner, you’re al ready well aware of the hur dles you need to clear to start, grow, and run a small business. Black entrepreneurs must clear these same hur dles while carrying the added burdens of personal and sys temicAlthoughracism.black Americans account for 12.8 percent of the national population, only 2.4 percent of businesses are black-owned, a Lending Tree study found. In contrast, white Americans make up 72 percent of the population, yet 86.5 percent of business es are white-owned. These disparities stem from institu tional and systemic racism, a legacy of slavery. Black entrepreneurs have a tougher time than their white counterparts accessing the capital needed to launch their businesses. Due to the racial wealth gap, many black entrepreneurs don’t have a “friends and family” network that can provide financial backing, as Fast Company points out. Banks are also less likely to approve them for loans, leaving them to turn to other funding options. Black women entrepreneurs face higher barriers still – it’s not surprising that 61 per cent fund their total startup capital themselves, as Babson College researchers found. COVID-19, which has taken a disproportionate toll on Black Americans, has only worsened these ineq uities. black business own ership fell 41 percent from February to April of 2020 – while white business own ership dropped 17 percent, according to CNBC. Blackowned businesses were also five times more likely than white-owned businesses to not get any of the PPP fund ing they’d asked for, based on a survey conducted by 12 Federal Reserve Banks in the fall of That2020.said, it’s important not to overlook the resil ience and resourcefulness of black-owned businesses, de spite these challenges. The number of black small busi ness owners was 28 percent higher in the third quarter of 2021 than it was in the year or so leading up to the pan demic, based on a UC Santa Cruz analysis of census data. That’s a considerably bigger percentage increase than any of those seen in the number of Latinx, Asian, and white business owners during that timeBlackperiod.business owner ship was already on the rise pre-pandemic. In 2019, there were 134,567 blackowned employer businesses, versus 124,551 in 2018, per census data. Indeed, black Americans have a history of entrepreneurship and inge nuity that stretches even fur ther back. How can I find support as a black business owner? You don’t have to go at it alone as a back entrepreneur. Here are networking oppor tunities, funding opportuni ties, and other resources to help you and your business thrive. Create community Connecting with others who share your identity and experiences as a black entre preneur can help you feel encouraged and seen as you start and grow your small business. Joining a profes sional network is one way to start building this communi ty.The Black Entrepreneurs Network and Black Business Association both offer access to networking opportunities for business owners across in dustries. Black Connect, an organization with a mission to close the racial wealth gap through growing the number of successful black-owned businesses, focuses on low and moderate-income com munities.Oryou could join an or ganization specific to your industry, such as The Black Podcasters Association or African American Graphic Designers. Many cities, like Philadelphia and Los Ange les, have their own black food entrepreneur organizations. Other organizations ca ter to specific groups in the black community. If you’re a black woman, for instance, you might find community in The WELL, Black Girl Ventures, or Black Women’s Network.Membership in a profes sional network typically re quires a fee. For free options, look into Facebook Groups like the Black Owned Busi ness Network, Black in Busi ness, or Helping Black Busi ness. Connect with mentors Getting guidance from more seasoned entrepreneurs whose identities and expe riences mirror yours can be incredibly empowering and expand your vision for your own business. On a practi cal level, learning from their trials and triumphs can save you time and stress in the longManyrun. professional net works, including Black Women’s Network, The Black Podcasters Association, and African American Graph ic Designers, listed above, have mentorship programs.

The WELL and Black Girl Ventures, also mentioned previously, have accelerator programs for early-stage en trepreneurs. Likewise, Black Connect’s Business & Entre preneur Assessment can help you create an action plan if you’re an aspiring entrepre neur unsure of how to start. Live in New York City? BE NYC can connect you to a mentor in your industry free of charge. Take advantage of funding opportunities Several funding sourc es have emerged to lower the barriers black entrepre neurs face to accessing capi tal. Backstage Capital, a VC firm that invests in women, LGBTQ+, BIPOC, and oth er under-estimated founders, reviews funding applications on a rolling basis. Harlem Capital and Chingona Ven tures also make an effort to invest in minority-owned businesses.Ifyou’re a black woman entrepreneur, consider apply ing to Black Girl Ventures’s crowdfunded pitch compe tition. You’ll have three min utes to pitch your idea and three minutes to field audi ence questions. Check the BGV website periodically for open calls for submissions. If you want to go the grant route, SoGal, in collabora tion with Winky Lux, Twilio, and other sponsors, awards $5,000 and $10,000 grants to black women and non binary entrepreneurs, plus assistance navigating the funding world, and access to SoGal Foundation and SoGal Ventures for advice. The Minority Business De velopment Agency also gives grants to minority-owned businesses. Our guide to suc cessfully applying for a small business grant can help you get started. Get listed in a black-owned business directory Listing your business in directories like Blax, Black Owned Everything, WeBuy Black and Black Business Green Book can increase your exposure and connect you to vendors, suppliers, and allies who might not find you oth erwise.Aswith professional net works, some directories are industry-specific. If you’re a creative, consider getting list ed in the Black Creative Da tabase, searchable by profes sion, subprofession, country, and city. And if you’re a dis abled creative, you can apply to be featured on the Black Disabled Creatives platform. You could also explore get ting listed in a directory of local businesses, like those for black-owned businesses in San Francisco, Houston, and Chicago. Get Minority Business En terprise Certification If you qualify, Minority Business Enterprise (MBE) Certification gives you access to networking opportunities, listing in national minority supplier databases, and other benefits. Check out our de tailed guide to getting MBE certified to learn more. How can I support black Business Month as an ally? As an entrepreneur and ally, you’re in a unique posi tion to celebrate and support black-owned small business es in your community. Here’s how. Shop black-owned busi nesses Search the directories listed above to locate black-owned businesses online and in your neighborhood. Find a black-owned supply business in your area, and commit to supporting their business while supplying your own. Get creative. If there’s a black-owned restaurant in your area, conduct staff lunches in their dining space or inquire about catering options. Does the restaurant offer gift certificates? Reward your employees with lunch or dinner from a local, Blackowned restaurant. Pass the mic Amplify the voices of black business owners in your com munity. If a reporter requests a quote or a business confer ence organizer asks you to speak on a panel, direct them to a black entrepreneur in stead. Leave positive reviews of black businesses in your area. In short, create space to center black entrepreneurs. Follow relevant hashtags Sometimes, following the crowd is a good thing. Look for social media hashtags such as:

Building Money and Finance

Wealth

• While#ShopBlackOwnedexploring these hashtags, you may even dis cover other hashtags unique to your community or city. Use these hashtags on your company’s social media

Partner with black-owned businesses Consider partnering with a black-owned business to work on a project or offer some sort of promotion. For instance, you and a partner business could promote a local charity organization. Or if a customer shops at a black-owned business, you might offer them a discount on their next purchase in your store.
