'Stronger Together,' YMCA hosts 38th Achievers and Scholarship Breakfast
On Wednesday August 21, 2019, The YMCA of Metropolitan Milwaukee Achievers program hosted its 38th Annual Achievers and Scholarship Breakfast at the Italian Conference Center, 631 East Chicago St. The theme of this year’s breakfast was "Stronger Together." This event provides the Y an opportunity to celebrate more than three decades of service to the Milwaukee community, and to acknowledge the adult volunteers (lower photo) who generously mentored more than 100 Teen Achievers in 2018-2019, and to welcome the new class of 201920 Adult Achievers. Milwaukee Mayor Barrett hosts annual picnic at the zoo
On Saturday, August 24, 2019, Mayor Tom Barrett hosted his annual ‘Zoo Picnic’ fundraiser at the Milwaukee County Zoo, 10001 W. Bluemound Rd. The mayor hosted the event, which serves as a fundraiser for his campaign. More than 400 people from all areas of the city, of all ages and walks of life attended the event, which gives the mayor a chance to meet informally with Milwaukee citizens and share his ideas for programs and progress for the city, as well as listen to their ideas and thoughts. Attendees got to dine on hamburgers, hotdogs and all the fixin’s, visit the animal exhibits, listen to a live band, and enjoy one of Milwaukee’s most outstanding cultural assets, while meeting old friends and making new acquaintances. This year, the weather cooperated by being just right for the waning days of summer, with few mosquitoes and no rain. Milwaukee Urban League fills backpacks for 'Stuff the Bag' event

On Tuesday, July 30, 2019, The Milwaukee Urban League (MUL) staff, the MUL Guild, and the MUL Young Professionals teamed together with Merrill Lynch Financial Advisors for a "Stuff the Bags" back-to-school service project. The volunteers filled more than 140 backpacks to be distributed to schools in MUL's neighborhood schools program, including OW Holmes, Auer Avenue, Carver Academy, and Marvin Pratt Elementary School.

North Sunrise Rotary Club hosts breakfast at Saint Ann's
On Thursday July 11, 2019, the Milwaukee North Sunrise Rotary Club started their new year with breakfast at St. Ann Center for Intergenerational Care Bucyrus Campus, 2450 W. North Ave. The breakfast commemorated the first day of service for new president Dr. Willie Hart as well as the start of their new fiscal year. Being Frank

The sun will rise There has been much confusion in the USA over the past several weeks. The political situation in the USA has been in confusion since 1776. There have been atrocities committed from the use of weapons. The New York Yankees' starting pitchers have been alternating between mediocre and bad. Through all of these trials and tests of faith in the USA remember good people; the sun will rise in the morning. If you watch the news or read news via newspaper or Internet you are bombarded with confusion. The saga that rages in Washington, DC is a soap opera that has gone on since the British left these shores. Why lose your mind over what the President, Senator, Congress or City Council person says? I observe people drawing mental lines that seem to eerily line up with race over what the politicians say to
the media. A few people in Congress got ridiculed by their boss one week. Weeks later it is revealed a so-called majority leader made a shady deal with a foreign power. These are a few examples of the ongoing confusion that Americans are peppered with. Relax everyone. Understand these situations have been going on for centuries and in the morning the sun will rise. Gun violence tragedies have wracked the psyche of the nation over the past month. What can be said of these wild, insane acts of random violence that hasn’t been said already? The USA prides itself on being a modern, trendsetting nation. In many cases, the US is. When it comes to the use of guns the USA is at the level of barbarism. Fear is a tool used to fuel the need for certain factions in the US to have several weapons in their homes. In many cities it is common
to see people walking around with their weapons on their hip like Dodge City in Gunsmoke. Why? Who knows? Maybe guns at home, and on your person make these people feel safe. We could argue for decades about stricter gun laws, and people have already, but guns are here to stay. Remember wonderful people; the sun will rise in the morning. Many people are living a life they would rather not. Whether it is because of a lack of money or love, a great number of people are miserable. In the USA citizens
are often too wrapped up listening to other people's lives and situations to assess their own. If I am on Instagram looking at how the rich and famous live, then my lower middle class lifestyle is going to seem bland. If I watch the news and let it influence my thoughts I will soon be at a gun shop buying an AR-15 along with a few Glock 9MM to protect myself. What people have to understand is that no matter how bleak or fearful life seems, the sun will rise in the morning. I am using the sun to show people the fact that there is always going to be light after dark. This means that even though there are several negative things going on in the world, the light will shine again. There will come a day, very soon, where the light will break through on this planet again and fear will become a thing of the past. For every stupid quote or act by a politician there are mil-
lions of good deeds by common people. For every tragedy there are countless acts of kindness performed daily that go unnoticed. Wonderful people, you have to take the goodness that you receive and focus on it and let the negative fade away. The sun will rise in the morning. If for some reason you wake up and the sun is not in the sky then you have problems. Oh yeah, the New York Yankees will overcome their pitching woes and win the World Series this year just like the sun will rise in the morning. COMMUNITY COLUMN UWM alum organizes block party and neighborhood cleanup By Kathy Quirk Schuyler Ramsey, who earned his bachelor’s degree in community engagement and education from UWM, is taking what he learned in the classroom back to his neighborhood. For the second straight year, Ramsey is organizing a neighborhood cleanup and block party, which is set for Sept. 21 in the area around Benjamin Franklin School on West Nash Street. “My goal is to bring what I learn back to my community,” said the 28-year-old Ramsey, who works part time in UWM’s TRIO & Pre-College programs office and plans to start working on a master’s degree in community education this fall. In 2018, when he was first inspired to do a neighborhood project, he asked people in the area what issues they would like to see addressed. In the 53206 ZIP code, there were many, including reckless driving, drugs and poverty. Ramsey decided to start with something focused and doable. “I had a few issues to choose
from, but I kind of wanted to start small,” he said, “and that’s where the community cleanup idea came from.” Drawing on what he’d learned in his UWM community education classes about organizing, he went door to door around West Capitol Drive, North 27th Street and West Keefe Avenue, telling people about the project and inviting them to join in. He also promoted the event on social media and through local news media. The 2018 “Sweep the Streets” community cleanup and block party attracted several hundred residents, mostly local, who worked with volunteers from Milwaukee Public Schools and other organizations to fill a dumpster full of trash. A few sponsors donated toward food and refreshments for the block party, held near Benjamin Franklin School. Games and activities, a DJ and a dance contest encouraged neighbors to get to know each other. Community leaders spoke to the gathering about peacemaking and building a stronger community. Ramsey will be passing out contact information for jobs organizations and city agencies. And, as at last year’s event, voting information
will also be available. “I named it a cleanup and block party,” Ramsey said. “However, I definitely want to educate the community. I kind of like catching them by surprise with all the educational stuff.” April Holland, executive director of the TRIO & Pre-College programs, describes Ramsey as a “phenomenal asset” to the program. “Schuyler inspires each of us daily through his words
of encouragement and positive attitude,” Holland said. “He displays a strong belief that education is important, an education is priceless, and demonstrates daily for our students that no matter what the obstacles we encounter each day, an education is your key to living a successful life.” Ramsey sees the block party and cleanup as a way of challenging the perception that people in the neighborhood don’t care about their community. After last year’s event, he said he’s already seeing changes. Some of the young men who used to just hang out around the neighborhood helped with the cleanup and pitched in for the block party. A few have gone back to school. Ramsey grew up in the neighborhood and still lives there. “Growing up in 53206 psyched me in a way because you see the good and the bad,” he said. “It makes me more eager to help make improvements. A lot of people want to move away, but I love it here. My goal is one little thing at a time.”

African American teens experiencing rise in suicide rates: ‘Eventually it was like there would be a day you just did it’ Thinking about how many people she knew who took their lives, there was a time Alleyah Getter wasn’t sure she would have any friends left by the time she got to high school. Three had killed themselves, and Getter, now a 14-year-old eighth-grader, was beginning to have her own suicidal thoughts. “It was like feeling like there was nothing you could do about it,” she said. “Eventually it was like there would be a day you just did it. It just felt like pain was nothing. You couldn’t talk to nobody. You just want to be alone and see if you can get through it yourself.” Getter did the thing advocates and survivors encourage everyone to do: She talked about her feelings. She told her father what was going on and eventually became part of a church group that helps children, teens and adults deal with mental health issues. Without opening up, Getter said, she doesn’t think she would be alive. “It kind of makes me feel happy that I actually made it,” she said. “There’s a lot of families whose kids actually did it, and they wish they would have stopped it.” A bleak picture A study published in May from the Journal of Community Health found that the suicide rate for African American
teenage boys increased 60 percent from 2001 to 2017. It was even worse for girls, who saw an increase of 182 percent. Suicide was the second leading cause of death for African American teenagers in that time. Those who have been impacted by suicide have their diagnoses. There’s bullying on social media, a harsh stigma for people dealing with mental health issues and so on. But these are disconnected anecdotes. There isn’t enough information about African American teenage suicides. “That seems to be a problem,” said Jagdish Khubchandani, a health science professor at Ball State University and co-author of the study. “We need larger samples and cohorts over time to figure why this is happening with African American teenagers.” Khubchandani noted that it’s difficult to do research on school-aged children, but the consequence is that it’s hard to draw sound conclusions about what’s behind the rise in suicide rates and how to help those who are thinking about killing themselves. The study mentions that most of what’s known about suicide, including methods to prevent it, are focused on white Americans, who have higher rates of suicide than

It’s difficult to get as full of a picture locally. The Marion County (Indiana) Coroner’s Office could only provide data for suicide deaths from 2016 to 2018. The coroner’s office investigated 47 suicide deaths in that time, but only two were teenagers, one in 2017 and one in 2018. Both were white males. in the case of every death, and the coroner ultimately determines whether to investigate, but their office is supposed to investigate known or suspected suicides. The stigma People dealing with mental health issues are well aware of the stigma that comes with something you can’t see or touch having such a profound impact on your life. That stigma is universal, but some worry it’s especially bad with African Americans. Dr. Jeanne Dickens, a medical psychiatrist at Sandra Eskenazi Mental Health Center, said well-meaning parents and others in the community can “actually discourage a young person from seeking mental health care” by instead putting an emphasis on being strong and dealing with it yourself. Joshua Jordan experienced this after his family moved from Chicago to Indianapolis when he was 11. He had no friends and was bullied. He attempted to kill himself for the first time when he was in eighth grade and went on to make more than 20 attempts. Jordan, 29, now does crisis intervention with young adults. He said the African American community “makes mental health issues a problem. They make it something we can’t talk about, when in reality it’s something that should be spoken about.” Even when he thought his parents would be understanding, Jordan said, he hesitated to talk to them because he didn’t want them to see him differently. Talking to parents about mental health issues can also be difficult because they may brush it off, thinking someone in their early teens can’t possibly know what it is to be depressed or have severe anxiety. “When we hear a child say they’re feeling suicidal … we have to always take it seriously,” said Kelsey Steuer,the state’s area director for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. “We also get the question of, ‘What if they’re talking about this for attention?’ We don’t ever want to test fate.” In the schools Because parents and other adults aren’t always going to be helpful when a child
tells them they’re dealing with mental health issues or are thinking about harming themselves, schools are often a first line of defense. Along with social workers and counselors, some larger school districts have specialists who focus on mental health and try to educate parents and students about how to deal with those issues. Some Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) have as many as three full-time therapists five days a week. Middle schoolers and high schoolers get information each year about what to do if they or someone they know is struggling and possibly thinking about taking their life. But Summers-Cotton said there’s a “culture” where families are “hesitant to embrace mental health.” To get a clear picture of what bullying looks like in schools would be difficult by just relying on data. In Marion County and across the state, schools likely aren’t providing an accurate look at how often bullying happens. Out of 57 schools in IPS, 22 reported no incidents of physical bullying in the state’s report of bullying incidents for the 2018-19 school year. Many reported fewer than five. Only six schools reported any incidents of “Written Communication/Electronic Bullying,” which includes cyber-bullying. When it comes to cyber-bullying, Summers-Cotton said schools mostly rely on students telling administration about instances since it usually happens outside of the school and not during school hours. IPS spokesperson Carrie Cline Black attributed these low numbers to a discrepancy in how the district was giving data to the state. Going forward, she said, bullying numbers should “look a little bit different.” To be sure, this is not a problem unique to IPS. About half of Indiana schools reported no incidents of bullying. On Sunday May, 28, 2019, The Smithsonian named Lonnie G. Bunch, III, as the 14th Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution. Bunch is the founding director of the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC), a position he has held since 2005. Prior to that, Bunch served as the president of the Chicago Historical Society. He succeeds David J. Skorton as secretary and will be the first African American to hold the position. In a Smithsonian press release announcing the new appointment, Bunch said, “I am excited to work with the Board of Regents and my colleagues throughout the Institution to build upon its legacy and to ensure that the Smithsonian will be even more relevant and more meaningful and reach more people in the future.” Bunch was born in Newark, New Jersey, in 1952 and attended Washington, D.C.’s Howard University, before transferring to American
the concept of what it means to achieve in this country. But the main thing is that this is one of the most distinguished historians on the planet. It’s a great moment for the humanities because for someone steeped in history to run this Institution, it’s so exciting. It’s hard for me to put in words. There’s no one on earth I admire more.” It was the former Apollo 11 astronaut Mike Collins, the director of the National Air and Space Museum at the time, who first brought Bunch to the Smithsonian, hiring him as a historian at the museum in the 1970s. In 1983, Bunch moved across the country to become the first curator at the California African American Museum in Los Angeles. But in 1989, the Smithsonian once again beckoned Bunch back with an offer to join the curatorial staff of the National Museum of American History, where he served for five years, collecting one of the museum’s most iconic arti-
facts, the Greensboro Lunch Counter, and curating one of it most popular ongoing exhibitions, "The American Presidency: A Glorious Burden." In 2000, he left the Smithsonian again to become the president of the Chicago Historical Society. “In college and graduate school I trained as an urban historian, specializing in the 19th century. And while I taught history at several universities, I fell in love with museums, especially the Smithsonian Institution. I like to say that I am the only person who left the Smithsonian twice—and returned,” he wrote. At the American History Museum, director Roger Kennedy, known for his ambition and brash manner, became Bunch’s mentor, teaching him how to navigate a bureaucratic operation and instilling in him the tools for leadership. (Continued from pg. 14) Despite sometimes biting off more than he could chew, Kennedy made the museum “a great place of possibility,” Bunch recalled. “He brought forward ideas.” When Bunch got the nod in 2005 to become the director of the National Museum of African American History and Culture, he was staggered by the overwhelming task, noting with characteristic self-effacement in an essay for Smithsonian magazine that all that was left yet to do “was to articulate a vision, hire a staff, find a site, amass a collection where there was none, get a building designed and constructed, ensure that more than $500 million could be raised from private and public sources, ease the apprehension among African American museums nationwide by demonstrating how all museums would benefit by the creation of NMAAHC, learn to work with one of the most powerful and influential boards of any cultural institution and answer all the arguments— rational and otherwise—that this museum was unnecessary.” In little more than a decade, Bunch accomplished his list, bringing together dozens of influential curators and educators, amassing a collection of more than 35,000 artifacts housed in a 400,000-square-foot world class, $540 million, LEED-certified museum on the National Mall and within sight lines of the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial. Last week, the museum, in partnership with the Alabama Historical Commission and SEARCH Inc., a group of maritime archaeologists and divers, authenticated and confirmed the finding of one of America’s last known slave ships. The Clotilda, arrived illegally in the United States in 1860, long after international slave trade was banned, enslaving 109 Africans from the Kingdom of Dahomey. Working closely with a community of the ship’s descendants still living together in Africatown, Alabama, the museum is working to preserve their history and the story of the Clotilda.
