Northwest Funeral Home hosts annual 'Back-to-School Book Bag Give-A-Way'

The Fiserv Forum, the new home to the Milwaukee Bucks, held their Grand opening on Sunday, August 26, 2018, at the corner of Herb Kohl Way in front of the new arena. Taking part in the ribbon cutting ceremony was former U.S. Senator Herb Kohl, NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and many of the key people involved in making the dream of a new arena a reality. Tours were also offered to show off the new basketball court,concessions and common areas. Currently the arena is 95 percent completed; once finished the Forum will seat 17,500 for basketball and up to 18,000 for concerts. On Saturday, August 25, 2018, Northwest Funeral Chapel hosted its annual "Back-to-School Book Bag Give-A-Way," at the Northwest Family Activity and Event Center, 4034 West Good Hope Rd. This year the children not only received free back packs to start the new school year; there were also free school supplies, reading books, flu shots, hair cuts, as well and food and games. The Milwaukee Times Black Excellence Committee (lower photo) was also there to hand out Popsicles that were provided by Cedar Crest Ice Cream, new reading books, and school supplies to the attendees. Pictured at the event are (upper photo) the staff of Northwest Funeral Chapel and Northwest Family Activity and Event Center. Both are owned by J.C. Frazier and Victoria Frazier.
Community leader Josephine Moutry Hill celebrates milestone birthday with a 'Royal Affair: All Hail the Queen'
On Sunday, August 26, 2018, community activist and business leader Josephine Moutry Hill (inset photo) celebrated her 75th birthday with a 'Royal Affair: All Hail the Queen,' at the Wisconsin African American Women's Center, 3020 West Vliet Street. Josephine was joined by her family and friends who all wore Afro-centric attire to help celebrate her milestone birthday. Guests enjoyed food, music, shared special memories and a special video presentation.

MUL helps kick off the new school year at Oliver Wendell Holmes School
On Monday, August 27, 2018 The Milwaukee Urban League hosted a Welcome Back Luncheon for the teachers and staff at Oliver Wendell Holmes School to kick off the 2018-2019 school year. The staff was treated to a picnic lunch and each staff member was presented with a survival bag of goodies. MUL's Assistant Director of Education and Training Greg Fanning (center) and school principal Patrick D. Chatman (right) gave the staff a pep-talk and answered questions. Milwaukee attorney defends police in Sterling Brown arrest, asks for dismissal of federal suit Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett says no one benefits from 'legal wrangling' Milwaukee police officers did nothing wrong when they used a stun gun on Bucks' guard Sterling Brown during his arrest over a parking violation in January, a city attorney said Friday, contradicting the police chief and mayor who condemned the officers' actions. Grant Langley said in a court filing on August 24, 2018, in response to a federal lawsuit that Brown was at least partially to blame for what happened on Jan. 26 during his 2 a.m. encounter with police outside a Wal-
greens store at South 26th Street and West National Avenue. "The plaintiff's injuries, if any, were not caused by any
policy, practice, or custom of the City of Milwaukee or any of its officers, agents or employees acting in their individual or official capaci-
ties,' the 51-page court filing reads, in part. The filing asks that the lawsuit alleging "excessive force" be dismissed. The case got national attention. Police Chief Alfonso Morales apologized to Brown and in May announced that 11 of the officers involved in the rookie guard's arrest were disciplined or retrained. Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett said Sunday that what happened to Brown was wrong. "I think right now you've got the legal wrangling go-
ing on and I don't think anybody benefits by having legal wrangling going on. What I'm looking for is a resolution to this that will be a positive for the community and for Mr. Brown," he said. Brown had been talking with officers while waiting for a citation for illegally parking in a disabled spot outside the store when officers took him down because he didn't immediately remove his hands from his pockets as ordered. He was never charged for the parking violation.
Citywide cleanup held in memory of slain city inspector Hundreds of volunteers spent the morning of Saturday, August 25, 2018 cleaning up trash as part of "Big Clean MKE," a citywide cleanup effort was a part of Hip Hop Week MKE. The event was in memory of Greg "Ziggy" Zyszkiewicz a city of Milwaukee inspector who was shot and killed while on the job in March 2017.
Alderman Russell Stamper helped organize this event. He wants it to become an annual volunteer opportunity. "We want to make sure the community takes pride in their neighborhood and the first way and the best way to do that is make sure it looks good. You have to have a clean neighborhood to feel proud of your neighborhood,” Stamper said.

Fall is Coming! #ANewSeason: Week 1 – Exercise!

When you engage in physical activity, you burn calories. The more intense the activity, the more calories you burn. Regular trips to the gym are great, but don't worry if you can't find a large chunk of time to exercise every day. To reap the benefits of exercise, just get more active throughout your day — take the stairs instead of the elevator or rev up your household chores. Consistency is key. Mayo Clinic’s tip #2: Exercise combats health conditions and diseases.
On September 22, 2018, the fall season begins. Summer will be gone, the weather will begin to change, and a new fall television lineup will emerge. With any new season comes new beginnings. Celebrating Milwaukee workers this Labor Day By U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin In Milwaukee—a city built by workers—Labor Day means something special to all of us. This is a city known for our workers, and the labor movement developed here has changed the face of our country. From the tanneries, foundries, factories and breweries manned by generations of the greatest workers America has ever known, we have much to reflect on, be thankful for and celebrate this Labor Day. Wisconsin’s first unions were founded right here in Milwaukee, back in the 1800’s. Those workers took collective action and secured basic workplace advancements that became the bedrock of America’s working class. Fair pay for a hard day’s work. Unemployment insurance for laid-off laborers. Workers’ compensation for people injured on the job. These vital reforms created shared prosperity and led to the birth of the middle class, and we have the Milwaukee labor movement to thank. As we spend Labor Day commemorating the actions of Milwaukee workers who led the way, we must also recommit to standing shoulder-to-shoulder with our union brothers and sisters of today. Right now, Washington is a mess. In all this noise and chaos, Wisconsin workers get left behind and feel the pain. Yet, Washington does seem to be working pretty darn well for a few powerful special interests. That’s not right, and we can’t just sit on the defensive, waiting for the next attack on workers’ rights to come. It’s time to go back on the offense and fight for common sense reforms that will strengthen Wisconsin workers and revitalize Milwaukee manufacturing. We need to make sure the words “Made In Wisconsin” are emblazoned on products for years to come. The best way to accomplish that goal is with strong Buy American laws. I’ve introduced multiple Buy American bills in the U.S. Senate on behalf of Wisconsin workers, including one that will rebuild our water infrastructure with American-made iron and steel. Rebuilding our drinking water systems with Wisconsin iron will not only replace lead laterals that threaten too many Wisconsin neighborhoods, it would boost Wisconsin manufacturing and the latest innovative water technology being developed in Milwaukee. If we’re going to invest in these advanced Milwaukee manufacturing jobs, we must ensure that the next gen-
eration of Milwaukee workers have the skills they need to succeed. Too many Milwaukee workers are unable to find a pathway to better-paying, family-supporting jobs. So, over the past few years, I’ve met with Wisconsin businesses, technical colleges and workforce development organizations, like WRTP-Big Step in Milwaukee, to talk about our skills gap — and how we can close it for good. They’ve shown that apprenticeships and workbased job training programs are a proven way to provide workers with the skills they need to land good-paying jobs. But many Wisconsin businesses, especially small and medium-sized businesses here in Milwaukee, often don’t have the resources to establish apprenticeship programs on their own. I got to work and introduced The PARTNERS Act, bold legislation that would scale up Wisconsin’s apprenticeship programs. My apprenticeship bill would invest in public-private partnerships between schools and local businesses that are training future Wisconsin workers. Now, I’m pressing on Washington to pass this bill immediately. Milwaukee working families don’t have any more time to wait and it’s time to make progress. I know these advancements

COMMUNITY COLUMN UWM serves as a partner on the path to pursuing your career By Kathy Quirk Dianna Herron knew making the career change would be a challenge, but following her passion meant that challenge was worth it. Herron, a senior at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, is pursuing her degree in the School of Education. Her commitment to becoming a teacher grew out of her love of the Spanish language. She was enrolled at MATC a couple of years ago, but like many students, still wasn’t quite sure where she wanted her educational path to lead. She knew she enjoyed Spanish, however, so she made sure it was among her coursework. To help with mastering the language, an instructor suggested that students should find opportunities to practice Spanish outside of class. So, Herron ended up tutoring students at Hayes Bilingual School on Milwaukee’s nearsouth side. “I worked with students in first and second grade that needed to work on their English composition and reading comprehension, and I

A healthy start back to school Back to school is a great time for resolutions and fresh starts. With a little preparation and minimal effort, it is possible to set the stage for a healthy year. Here are some small steps that will get you moving in the right direction. Pack healthy school lunches Despite recent nutrition guidelines, school lunches are not always the most nutritious, so try packing your child’s lunch whenever possible. Having a few of the following items on hand can make the process easier and more efficient. • An insulated lunch container for each child (and one for snacks, while you’re at it). • Freezer packs. Two for each child can be helpful in case you forget to put one back in the freezer. If you’re committed to sending fresh,
healthy food to school, consider getting a small freezer pack for snacks as well. • Plastic containers in multiple shapes and sizes, including at least one for sandwiches and multiple smaller ones for fruits and veggies. • Water bottles, preferably dishwasher-safe, with an opening large enough for a scrub brush and without

Obesity warps the shape and function of young hearts When it comes to your health, bigger isn’t always better. In the Black community, we love our hips, curves and extra junk in the trunk. It’s naturally on us and beautifully a part of our genetic make-up. However, when is it too much? What is the cutoff point of excess weight? In the eyes of mainstream society, people who carry these extra curves and
genes are in fact considered “obese”. As confusing and as hard for Black communities to understand, the bodies we’ve known to have all our lives, are simply not healthy for us. Doctors have long known that obesity raises the risk for heart disease later in life, but new research reveals it can damage even young hearts.

British scientists found that young adults who had a higher body mass index (BMI) – an estimate of body fat based on height and weight – had higher blood pressure and thickened heart muscle. “Our results simply suggest that any reduction of body mass index to a normal, healthy level from a young age is likely to prevent the development of adverse cardiovascular health in later life,” said study author Kaitlin Wade, a research associate at the University of Bristol Medical School. “If the obesity epidemic increases, or indeed maintains its current trajectory, it is likely that the future risk of cardiovascular events such as stroke and coronary heart disease will increase,” she added. For the study, Wade and her colleagues used a new genetic analysis to determine if an unhealthy BMI causes spikes in blood pressure or structural changes in the heart. Their analysis included several thousand healthy 17- and 21-year-olds who are participating in an ongoing study. The researchers found that higher BMI caused higher blood pressure or more force against the artery walls during and between heartbeats. Being overweight also caused the left ventricle, which is the heart’s main pumping chamber, to become enlarged. Excess weight can make the
heart work harder, increasing the amount of blood it has to pump and the pressure it needs to pump against, the researchers explained. These changes can trigger an increase in heart muscle mass, explained Dr. Gregg Fonarow, director of the Ahmanson-UCLA Cardiomyopathy Center in Los Angeles. Usually, the thickening of blood vessel walls is the first sign of atherosclerosis, a disease commonly known as “hardening of the arteries” that causes fatty plaques to build up within the arteries and block blood flow. But the new study shows that young people who are overweight may develop even earlier warning signs of heart trouble. “Our findings suggest that higher BMIs cause changes in the heart structure of the young that may precede changes in blood vessels,” Wade explained. Obese young people are at higher risk for heart failure and diabetes, and they’re also more likely to have a heart attack or stroke at an earlier age, said Fonarow, who is also co-director of UCLA’s Preventative Cardiology Program. “If current trends in obesity continue without effective interventions, prior gains in reducing cardiovascular events and extending life may be lost,” he said. But losing weight can help protect the heart — even later in life. Shedding extra pounds could slow or even reverse these worrisome heart-related changes among young people, Wade said. Fonarow added that regular physical activity, maintaining healthy blood pressure and cholesterol levels and not smoking can also help improve heart health.

Heath Special to the Milwaukee Times As summer winds down in Milwaukee, attention turns from enjoying all that comes with this famously fabulous (albeit short) season to preparing for change, new beginnings, and fresh starts. A major change looming before many households in some way these days is the start of a new school year. Many local businesses have viewed back-to-school season as an opportunity to reach out to the community which helps them prosper and give back in a simple but significant way. They invite the community into their establishment for a backto-school open house and school supply give-away. I have been pleased to attend and cover many of these events over the years. The most recent one was this past Saturday in my own neighborhood. The sponsor, Northwest Funeral Chapel and Northwest Community Family Center, were joined by several other participating vendors (including The

The children all seemed excited and expectant about the approaching school year, despite it marking the end of summer vacation. I guess there’s just something about brand-new pencils, pens, notebooks and your own new backpack that resonates
with a young person. What resonated with me throughout the day was seeing the power of positive community action coming to life. It was as if everyone there was re-committing themselves to work for positive outcomes, one person at a time. Regardless of age, race or position, we each have the opportunity to participate in the power of positive community action every day. As Northwest Community Center proprietors Victoria and J.C. Frazier put it, being in business “is not always about making money. It’s important to give back to the community in ways that will make a difference.” You’re never too young or too old to participate in the power of positive community action. As a young person, your most dramatic contribution can be simply to put forth your best effort in school, study hard, learn well, make the most of your educational opportunities, and prepare yourself for a fruitful future. As an older person, your actions
speak volumes. By providing strong, nurturing examples and encouraging words for our young people (blood relationship and/or parental status is optional), you can ensure that the excellence you embody will live on in the next generations. With the approaching new season and school year, let’s each pledge to join forces to reap the benefits of positive community action. The good thing about that is there’s only one outcome if we make the commitment. It’s a win-win proposition for everyone.

Remembering Aretha Franklin as a civil rights icon Aretha Franklin, who was born and rose to fame during the segregation era and went on to sing at the inauguration of the first black U.S. president, often used her talent, fortune and platform to inspire millions of black Americans and support the fight for racial equality. “She not only provided the soundtrack for the civil rights movement, Aretha’s music transcended race, nationality and religion and helped people from all backgrounds to recognize what they had in common,” said longtime civil rights leader the Rev. Joseph E. Lowery. Franklin, who died Thursday, August 16, 2018 at 76, was a close confidante of the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., and a financial lifeline to the civil rights organization he co-founded, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. The Queen of Soul’s commitment to civil rights was instilled by her father, the Rev. C.L. Franklin, who also knew King and preached social justice from his pulpit at New Bethel Baptist Church in Detroit. The church, in fact, was the first place King gave his
“I Have a Dream” speech in 1963. Among those in the congregation were Aretha Franklin and Mahalia Jackson. It was Jackson who later urged the civil rights leader to “tell them about the dream, Martin” at the March on Washington, where he delivered the oration for which he is most famous. Franklin recorded “Respect” on Valentine’s Day 1967. Black Americans had already won federal legislation outlawing segregation and protecting their voting rights, particularly in the Deep South. But blacks were still a year away from the Fair Housing Act. And just months after the song was recorded, urban centers, including Franklin’s hometown of Detroit, would burn, exposing police brutality and unequal living conditions and job opportunities. “Her songs were songs of the movement,” Andrew Young, the former King lieutenant and U.N. ambassador, said Thursday. "R-E-S-P-EC-T. … That’s basically what we wanted. The movement was about respect.” The SCLC often struggled financially, but Franklin played a vital role in keeping

King would often ask Franklin to sing his favorite songs, “Amazing Grace” or “Precious Lord, Take My Hand.” When King was assassinated in 1968, Franklin sang “Precious

He recalled that his mother would play the song nonstop in their Brooklyn home after his father left. As an adult and an activist, Sharpton became friends with the soul singer. He noted her unwavering faith, which she brought with her on stage to every performance. “Whether it was the White House, Radio City Music Hall or the Apollo Theater, she always did gospel num-
bers,” Sharpton said. “She was unapologetically a hardcore, faith-believing Baptist. At the height of her career, she cut a gospel album. Who does that? Her faith is what motivated her.” Long after the civil rights movement ended, Franklin remained committed to social justice, helping Sharpton as he began his organization, the National Action Network, in New York. She would call Sharpton for updates on the emerging Black Lives Matter movement, asking about such cases as those of Trayvon Martin and Eric Garner. “She gave so much to so many people, from Dr. King, to Mandela, to Barack Obama,” said Rev. Jesse Jackson, a longtime friend who visited her the day before her death. Her presence and influence were as valuable to the movement as her financial contributions, Sharpton said. “To have someone like that so involved and interested … was a statement,” he said. “It gave all the credibility in the world. Others had celebrity, but she had gravity and respect.”
