170 years in the making: MPS celebrates their 'Forever Family'

On Friday, August 25, 2017 Milwaukee Public Schools and MPS Foundation hosted their first-ever Alumni Awards Dinner, which celebrated the accomplishments of nine outstanding MPS alumni. The awards dinner was part of a larger event weekend which also featured the 10th Annual MPS Run Back-to-School. The Alumni Awards Dinner featured MPS graduates who have gone on to make even greater outstanding contributions in the world at large. 'We Got This' host graduation ceremony four its fourth season participants On Saturday, August 26, 2017 a special graduation ceremony was held at North 9th and West Ring Streets in Milwaukee. The ceremony was to honor the young men who have participated in the "We Got This" community beautification and improvement program this summer. The program was conceived by Endre Lee Ellis (left) and his wife Angela who adopted a community garden next to their home at 9th and Ring, making-it an informal meeting place for the community. Mr. Ellis began paying the young men $5; in the community who would offer to help him with the garden and cleaning up the neighborhood-all the while being taught a sense of responsibility and value of work. Pictured with Mr. Ellis was Alderwoman Milele A. Coggs (right) who represents the district where the Ellis home and community garden are located. Ms. Coggs said, "I am inspired to see so many young men using their time to do something positive within our community."

Luv2Hear celebrates sixth-month milestone luncheon and conference

Luv2Hear held its sixth-month anniversary conference and luncheon on Saturday August 26, 2017 from 1-3 p.m. at the Capitol Drive Library on 74th St. One of the themes to emerge during the conference is that a person does not have to be 100 percent hearing impaired in order to receive certain free assistance. Luv2Hear is a community based resource/support group that spreads awareness of the hearing challenges that affect the African American community.
