In 2022 the fashion indus try is creating apparel sup posedly designed to make everyone feel comfortable with themselves. You see this in stores like Victoria's Secret where plus-sized women are now modeling their lines. The fashion industry does not use this push to make African Americans comfortable with themselves. If anything the fashion industry is making African Americans into racist caricatures from the past. At one time African Americans were the sharpest dressed, proudest people on the plan et. In 2022 African Amer icans seem to be the most mediocre, slovenly dressed, mentally lost people on the earth. What happened?

Let’s clear one thing up right off. Fashions that ca ter to African Americans are often expensive. African Americans spend good mon ey on everything from Jordan shoes to designer t-shirts. Money is not the issue with African American apparel. The problem stems from the fact that many African Amer ican fashion statements are being directed by hands that do not have their best inter ests in mind. I am includ ing hair styles, make up, and accessories in this equation. Many African Americans are adopting fashion statements that come from famous peo ple who they look up to. The questions are, “Where are these famous people getting their directive from? Has the famous person been compro mised?” The answers may shine a light on the alarm ing rate of self-hate African Americans unknowingly har bor.One of the earliest depic tions of an African Amer ican female by racists was one with low morals. These racists insisted the African American female was some lusty, sex-crazed individual. If one looks into history we all know it wasn’t the African American female who was the freak. It was the Caucasian female. One of the biggest issues the lack of an econom ic base has done to the Af rican American community is lead to the exploitation of the African American female. The harlot, street walker be came a means for African American females to gener ate income. These women of leisure wore loud wigs, long eyelashes and outrageous clothing. The previous items were tools of the street walk er’s trade. In 2022 the same wigs, lashes, and gear has become the norm for a vast majority of African American women. These 2022 African American females are not street walkers. Many have jobs and careers. Why then are they dressing like the rac ist caricature from the past? Has the white-driven fashion industry used famous people to lead African American fe males into this look? What's going on, African Americans?

What happened?

The African American male was depicted by racists in the past as a nappy-headed, buf foon who was a menace to society. If someone was to showcase Buckwheat from The Little Rascals and tell Af rican Americans to dress, or look like him there would be a fight. In 2022 when you look around the Afri can American community, all you see are men with hair like Buckwheat or those rac ists Warner Brother cartoons. Why? Many profession al athletes and entertainers wear their hair in these fash ions. Once again the ques tion has to be asked, “Who is controlling these famous role models for African American males? Why is the fashion industry creating clothing to feminize African American males?” Is the white manip ulated fashion industry using famous African American males to feminize and retard African American male men tal growth? The answer may shed a blinding light on why African American males have more money that ever before in the USA and are still at a “boy”Africanstatus.Americans, look at yourselves and be honest in the assessment. How did the sharpest dressed, proud est group of black people on the planet allow themselves to be so manipulated? Why are African Americans pay ing big money to look like trollops and feminine men tally challenged teenagers? How did Jordan gym shoes become the African Ameri can version of Gucci loafers or alligator shoes? How did the original people allow the inferior people to define their look, much less their exis tence? What happened?

When Milwaukee Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Keith P. Posley kicked off the festivities at Wick Play field on Saturday, August 27, 2022, there was a sense of renewal and anticipation for the 15th annual Run Back to School race. Hundreds of runners, volunteers, com munity leaders, staffers, and students safely gathered for the 5K run/1.5-mile walk through Washington Park to celebrate the start of the 2022-23 school year. The 2022-23 MPS aca demic year began on Aug. 15 for schools on the early start calendar; schools on the tra ditional calendar begin on Sept. 6. The positive energy was palpable throughout the entire morning, as the greater MPS community joined to gether in the spirit of school unity.MPS alumni, teachers, administrators, parents, students, and southeastern Wisconsinites all attended the run to support MPS' growth within the city. Pro ceeds from the event are used to support youth recreation, wellness, and sports programs throughout the district. Schools that have at least 25 registrants also received a $500 mini-grant for the well ness programs at their school. This year, eight schools hit the 25-person mark, includ ing MacDowell Montessori,

first in the men's division. "The event galvanizes the community [and] brings everyone together around a healthy lifestyle," Beams said. "I'm a big supporter of anything that gets people outdoors and active." Run Back to School also included music, awards for the top finishers in each age group, and carnival games for"Ikids.coordinate sports at my school, so I love seeing kids running and getting exercise; this is a big deal for me," Nacole Ewerdt, winner of the women's division and a special education teacher at Maryland Montessori, said.

"It's a great run, and always really exciting. It's a nice start to the school year."

Thank you to all of our sponsors for this year's event, as well as our participants and volunteers. We look for ward to seeing you next year to celebrate the 16th edition of the run.

The 2022 Run Back to School was made possible with generous support from United Healthcare, Educa tors Credit Union, Voya Fi nancial, Goodwill Industries, University of Wisconsin-Mil waukee, Gruber Law Offices, Edvest, and Gabriel, Roeder, Smith & Company.

We are used to treating people who are in pain. And, when we do, we look at both causes and symptoms. We care for the whole person — that’s why we continue to do our part to treat racism as a health crisis. We set goals and measure our progress to hold ourselves accountable. For example, we’re working to close the care gap for breast cancer screening in our Black, Indigenous and people of color (BIPOC) patient populations. We’re proud to share that year-over-year, we increased the percentage of breast cancer screenings in BIPOC patient populations from 67.45% to 71.53%. This helps to close the gap between BIPOC and non-BIPOC patient populations. Through our efforts, we will help eradicate racism in health care. We continue to examine our biases and always evaluate our policies and practices to deliver culturally and linguistically equitable care. Learn more at froedtert.com/end-racism in health care

Creating environments to thrive in Older adults with cogni tive challenges often face increasingly limited options for social engagement. Adult day centers are communi ty-based programs that are open during the day and provide social opportunities, health and wellness services and physical activity for old er adults who are typically living at home with their family.“When we think about the care needs surrounding a de mentia diagnosis, we have to think about both the per son living with the diagnosis and their primary caregiver,” said Jennifer McAlister, Pro gram Manager, Alzheimer’s Association. “Both of these individuals have specific health concerns that need to be considered as the disease progresses. Adult day centers offer families the opportu nity to address those needs simultaneously. The person living with dementia has the opportunity to connect with other people through struc tured programs that offer a consistent and ther apeutic daily routine. The caregiver is offered the opportunity to take a break from their care giving responsibilities, allowing them to focus on their own self-care.”

Reducing caregiver burn out “Adult day centers offer the best benefit to both the person living with dementia and their caregiver when uti lized consistently 2-3 days a week,” said McAlister. “The health benefits for both peo ple include increased social ization, improved sleep and better nutrition. Adult day centers can delay residential care placement by as much as two“Onceyears.”families learn about adult day services, they get connected with other fami lies who are facing the same challenges, and can relate,” said Words. “We see many “sandwich generation” care givers, who are caring for a child and also a senior in their home. The demands are great for these caregivers and we want to avoid caregiver burnout as much as we can.”

OF FIGHT IN THEM.

“As individuals age, they sometimes find that maintaining re lationships outside of home can become in creasingly difficult,” said Kendra Words, Execu tive Director, Alexian Village. “That’s why adult day programs, like we offer at Alexian Village, fill a void for families and al low seniors to thrive as they age. Driving is a luxury that seniors often lose. And even tually being able to navigate outside the home can be very challenging. Ultimately, the ability for seniors to socialize decreases over time. Many families don’t know that op tions even exist to support their loved one as they face these challenges. But we have found that people thrive in social environments."

Alexian Village and the Walk to End Alzheimer’s Alexian Village has a team for the upcoming Walk to End Alzheimer’s in Milwau kee County on Sept. 18. “Many of our residents are on a journey with dementia and we use the time around the Walk season to create awareness for memory loss and signs of dementia,” said Words. Emotional support Your child’s emotions can be just as important as their environment when it comes to controlling asthma. “Many children think they’re the only person in the world with asthma, and that can be very depressing,” said H. James Wedner, MD, chief of allergy and immunology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis,AnxietyMO. and depression can trigger asthma attacks in children and make the con dition more difficult to con trol. If your child seems sad or distraught, reassure them that asthma is a very com mon — and very controlla ble — condition. If they still feel distressed, or are in emo tional pain from other caus es, counseling can give them new determination to fight asthma. Help from a doctor Your child can gain extra confidence with the help of a device called a peak-flow meter. This small, handheld device, available from a doc tor, measures how well your child is breathing. The device tells them when their asthma is under control and when they need extra medication. In short, a peak-flow meter makes your child the expert on their condition.

After you’re first diagnosed with diabetes, it’s normal at first to minimize the serious ness of the disease. But if the denial goes on too long and interferes with your self-care, the consequences can be dan gerous.Bythe time my friend — we’ll call her Tina — was diagnosed with diabetes at age 52, she should have been well-prepared to deal with her illness. She had been looking after her dia betic mother for more than 20 years, managing her diet, medications, and daily blood tests. She also knew all too well what the disease could do. She had watched as dia betes destroyed her mother’s eyesight and caused severe circulatory problems. With all that expertise, you’d think that Tina would have been a model patient.

Long-term denial may seem easier than learning to cope with the illness, because with denial you’re convinced there isn’t anything to cope with — no need to change your habits and routine.

Living in denial Instead, Tina kept saying she’d deal with her diabe tes when she was ready. The problem was that that day never seemed to arrive. Her only concession to her dia betes was to cut back from drinking two 2-liter bottles of regular Coca-Cola each day to drinking only one. A hundred pounds overweight, Tina made no effort to go on a diet. She tested her blood only once every week or two, and didn’t keep her doctor’s appointments. Only two years after she was diagnosed with diabetes, she had circu latory problems of her own, including leg swelling so se vere that walking was sometimes dif ficult. Still, she has not made any effort to deal with her ill ness.Tina is suffer ing from denial, a common problem among diabetics and other people with chronic illness es. “This can’t be happening to me,” is often someone’s first reaction after learning he or she has a serious med ical problem. It’s not unexpected that a person with a life-altering disease might first rush to minimize its importance. In fact, it’s a normal reaction and way of coping when diagnosed with a grave or chronic ailment.

More than six million children in the United States have asthma. They’re every where. Look at a soccer field, walk in a mall, or take in a Saturday matinee, and you’re practically guaranteed to see asthmatic kids. You’d just never know it by looking at them.Children with asthma don’t have to spend their days at home, wheezing and out of breath. In fact, the condi tion doesn’t even have to slow them down. With support from parents, doctors, teach ers, and others, nearly every kid with asthma can play just as hard, accomplish just as much, feel just as good, and breathe just as easily as other kids.

Riggi said that like my friend Tina, patients may drag their feet because they don’t feel ill at first. Other warning signs include con vincing yourself that a bite or two of a high-sugar food won’t hurt, ignoring sores that won’t heal, putting off seeing a doctor, ignoring meal planning, forgetting to examine your feet every day, and continuing to smoke.

How to help your child breathe easier

In denial after a diabetes diagnosis? Tips for coping

Your child’s doctor will also prescribe medications to control asthma and pre vent attacks. Of course, these treatments will only help if taken correctly. Make sure they know how and when to use their inhaler and any oth er medications.

Vacuuming regularly and clearing their room of ma jor dust traps such as potted plants, stuffed animals, and shag carpeting can be a big help.Ifyour child is allergic to pollen, you may need to keep the windows closed during the spring and summer and install a filter in your air con ditioner.

Breathing easily at home Asthma control begins at home. You can help your child breathe easier by keep ing the air clear of dust, per fume, tobacco smoke, and other irritants that could get into her lungs and set off an attack.

Asthma control at school Your child should be able to breathe just as easily at school as at home. Most states protect a child’s right to self-administer asthma medication at school. Find out if the school lets students carry inhalers. If not, your child will have to keep their inhaler in the nurse’s office or another con venient location, a place that is unlocked and easily acces sible after hours. (If you’re worried your child won’t have quick access to their in haler, ask whether their coach or teachers can keep it within easyYoureach.)should make sure teachers and coaches can recognize the symptoms of an asthma attack. If they’re not familiar with the disease, you may also need to assure them, if appropriate, that your child can fully partici pate in any activities. Asthma can be challenging for both you and your child, but don’t give up halfway to success. Until your child is at their best — both physically and emotionally — there’s still some room for improve ment. When the asthma is fi nally under control, everyone can breathe easier.

”Everyone who is diag nosed with diabetes has to go through stages to accept their diagnosis,” said Laura Riggi, a certified diabetes educator in New York City. “Fear, an ger, and denial are normal re actions to being told that you have diabetes, but you need to work through it in order to take the steps you need to deal with your diabetes.”

Of course, even if you deal with your diabetes well, de nial may creep back in once in a while. This is normal. In other cases, Laura Riggi said, fear can overwhelm diabetics and paralyze them from tak ing action. “And sometimes,” she said, “people just get tired of all that goes into their care.” When this happens, it’s important that you learn to recognize the warning signs so you can get back on track.

You’re also in denial, ac cording to the ADA, if you don’t regularly test your blood glucose levels. You may prefer to believe that you don’t need to test because you can “tell” what your blood sugar is by how you feel — a recipe for trouble. You’re taking risks if you feel you can’t ask your family members to change their eating habits or fear you might have to eat alone. And finally, you’re in denial if you tell yourself that because you only take oral medications, your diabetes isn’t serious.

If you’re still plagued by denial, you can start to take control by writing down your care plan and health care goals and learning to under stand why they are import ant, according to the ADA. Be realistic and remember that whatever your goal — say, losing 50 pounds — it might take a while for you to getRemember, there. too, that a good support system is es sential to good diabetic man agement. Talk to your family and friends so that they will understand your needs and what they can do to help. Consider consulting a dia betic educator and a nutri tionist for help as well. And if concerns about your dia betes are overwhelming you and you feel depressed, speak to your doctor. There are millions of other diabetics out there struggling with the same issues, so you shouldn’t have to feel alone.

But if denial goes on too long and interferes with get ting the care you need, it’s not just counterproductive; it’s dangerous. Diabetics who refuse to acknowledge their illness are likely to develop serious diabetic complica tions, including circulatory and eye disorders, kidney disease, and heart disease. These problems, in turn, can potentially lead to blindness, amputation, and even death.

For Tina, denial is not just a stage in learning to accept her illness, but an ongoing problem that threatens her very life.
