Being Frank In the USA it seems as if African American people ate always identifying with other races. You see this on television in the form of assimilation that every show or commercial that has an African American in it depicts. You see it in the way African Americans ape other people's culture. The lack of confidence in African Americans is obvious in the way they race to live next to people who have exploited them for centuries. No more. African American people, it's time to understand that you are somebody. It is a sickening sight to see an African American person that has totally assimilated another race's identity. It seems like African Amer-

We are somebody

icans have a severe case of Stockholm syndrome. The concept of identifying with one's captors has been adopted in the African American community like some form of holy doctrine. African Americans are lost without

white dictum to direct them. On every level of IJS society, you see this repeatedly. The results of this futile pursuit to be something they are not range from the loss of selfpride to dating every other race by African Americans.

Well today for the length of this article, I'm here to tell African Americans you are somebody and stop chasing mythological assimilation. There are more African Americans on television than ever before. The question is, why? Are these African American entertainers depicting proud Black people or are they simply showcasing black white people? The corniness that permeates the majority of television shows that feature African Americans is abundant. The writers of these shows depict African Americans just like whites. Since when do African Americans live like whites? If one took a good look at how the majority of whites live would you really

want to? Ah yes, the money. With the number of drunken, depraved wealthy whites in the world, do you truly think money brings happiness? When African Americans were segregated and had little, there seemed to be more happiness in the African American community. This insane infatuation with other races' failed criminal element also has to stop. For years African Americans have held every other race's crime figures up as some form of a perverse deity. You see it all-through the names of hip-hop artists who pretend to be hard-core. This foolishness has to stop. If you want to idolize someone try Nat Turner or Hannibal. If African Americans want to celebrate foolishness then there ate enough fools who resemble them to idolize. Leave the other race's garbage with the other race, African Americans. A race that cant see beauty in itself is doomed to die. It is time for African Americans to start seeing beauty in each other. True beauty, not someone else's version of what beauty is. Other races desperately want to get a hold of African American people to live out their racial sexual fantasies. The African American male is lusted after for his manliness. The African American female is chased for her womanhood. African American people have got to understand who they are. With this in mind, African Americans can stop buying other races' leftover hair. They will stop letting clothing designer emasculate their men. When African Americans can see beauty in themselves and each other, the need to debase themselves with other races will cease to exist I could go on for days but I won't. ,African American people need to understand that before you even adopted the name African American you were someone powerful. African Americans, here is a gift that you may have forgotten. The gift is the knowledge that before you were African Americans you were Black people who shaped the world. The Counseling Corner

By Rev. Judith T. Lester, B.Min. M.Th

Fall is Coming! #ANewSeason: Week 2 - Exercise! (cont’d) “Autumn is the season of change.” -Chinese proverb Fall starts a new season as well as an opportunity for new beginnings. This month, this column is taking a look at ways to start afresh this new season by adding healthy habits to your regular schedule. With the help of the Mayo Clinic, the following are Tips 4-7 of the benefits of regular exercise and physical activity. Incorporate these tips in your daily routine as you enter #ANewSeason: Mayo Clinic’s tip #4: Exercise boosts energy. Winded by grocery shopping or household chores? Regular physical activity can improve your muscle strength and boost your en-

durance. Exercise delivers oxygen and nutrients to your tissues and helps your cardiovascular system work more efficiently. And when your heart and lung health improve, you have more energy to tackle daily chores. Mayo Clinic’s tip #5: Exercise promotes better sleep. Struggling to snooze? Regular physical activity can help you fall asleep faster and deepen your sleep. Just don't exercise too close to bedtime, or you may be too energized to hit the hay. Mayo Clinic’s Tip #6: Exercise puts the spark back into your sex life. Do you feel too tired or

too out of shape to enjoy physical intimacy? Regular physical activity can improve energy levels and physical appearance, which may boost your sex life. But there's even more to it than that. Regular physical activity may enhance arousal for women. And men who exercise regularly are less likely to have problems with erectile dysfunction than are men who don't exercise.

Mayo Clinic’s tip #7: Exercise can be fun…and social! Exercise and physical activity can be enjoyable. It gives you a chance to unwind, enjoy the outdoors or simply engage in activities that make you happy. Physical activity can also help you connect with family or friends in a fun social setting. So, take a dance class, hit the hiking trails or join a soccer team. Find a physical activity you enjoy, and just do it. Bored? Try something new, or do something with friends. Beloved, according to the Mayo Clinic, the bottom line on exercise is exercise and physical activity are a great

way to feel better, boost your health and have fun. Aim for at least 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity exercise, or 75 minutes per week of vigorous exercise. United Way kicks off community campaign and debuts Johnson Controls Volunteer Center

United Way of Greater Milwaukee & Waukesha County’s campaign focuses on creating lasting change through fundraising and volunteer goals. For the first time, United Way of Greater Milwaukee & Waukesha County kicked off their annual Community Campaign right at home at their Milwaukee offices. The event coincided with the grand opening of the Johnson Controls Volunteer Center, located on the ground floor of United Way’s Schlitz Park location. In June, United Way announced a Community Campaign goal of $56 million, which will impact hundreds of thousands of local individuals and families by supporting 220-plus programs at more than 110 local agency program partners in the areas of health, education, and financial stability. “A gift to United Way is the best investment of your charitable dollars,” said Amy Lindner, president of United Way of Greater Milwaukee & Waukesha County, “our team of in-house experts and rich community partnerships uniquely position us to impact complex issues like drug abuse, homelessness, financial instability, and more.” Also announced at the Kickoff event was a goal of 40,000 volunteer hours, to be completed during the newly-expanded Seasons of Caring. The Volunteer Center is generously supported by a $1 million gift from Johnson Controls, pro-bono design and construction administration by Irgens, and additional sponsorship support from Rockwell Automation, Interstate Parking and HSA Bank, a division of Webster Bank, N.A. The new space will elevate existing volun-

Attendees at the campaign kickoff event were invited to tour the center. “We believe in the transformative power of volunteerism—not only for the community being served, but for the volunteers themselves,” says George Oliver, chairman and CEO of Johnson Controls. “When we strategically work together with good will and without regard for who gets the credit, we can change the trajectory of lives.” “This volunteer goal enhances the resources mobilized through donations,” said Jay Magulski, president and CEO of Landmark Credit Union and chair of United Way’s Volunteer Engagement committee. “This support helps United Way partner agencies and initiatives fulfill their missions and

offer services they may not have the capacity to do without the extra time and talent that volunteers provide.” Attendees of the event also heard from the 2018 United Way campaign co-chairs. “The gift of time is just as valuable to our community as a monetary gift,” said Don Layden, venture partner at Baird Capital and partner at Quarles & Brady LLP and a United Way 2018 campaign co-chair. “United Way works because thousands of people give what they can, no matter how much, to contribute toward the betterment of our community.” “As a Waukesha businessman and resident, I have friends and family from all walks of life,” said Mike Rowe, chairman, president, and CEO of American Transmission Company and a United Way 2018 campaign co-chair. “One of the things I love to see is when people step up and find a way to

help themselves. And I love making a difference in helping those families help themselves. United Way helps all of us do just that.” “United Way has a vast understanding of community needs and we have a shared commitment to improving the quality of life for area residents,” said Cristy Garcia-Thomas, chief external affairs officer for Advocate Aurora Health Care and a United Way 2018 campaign co-chair. “We’re grateful to partner with United Way on important sexual assault and domestic violence programs as one in four women and one in six men are assaulted during their lifetime. That means that over half a million of the patients we serve across WI and IL will be impacted. Tackling this issue together has had a positive and significant impact in the lives of people affected.” “Being a numbers person, I can’t help but notice that between my home and my office are six of the eight poorest zip codes in Wisconsin,” said David Gay, managing partner at Enest & Young and a United Way 2018 campaign co-chair. “The neighbors who need us are closer than we think, and United Way knows where to put their focus locally.” United Way’s 2018 Community Campaign results will be announced on December 12 at the Campaign Closing event hosted by Aurora Health Care at the Italian Community Center in Milwaukee. There are many ways to get involved in with the campaign. You can donate

Back-to-school time means many different things depending on who you are. If you’re not a parent, it can simply mean more traffic during your morning commute. But for parents, backto-school season means new classes, new schools for some and the potential exposure to new risks of injury. In order to provide parents with some peace of mind, here are three specific risks to talk to your children about before the first day of school.

Healthy eyes for back to school By Dr. Linda Chous, Chief Eye Care Officer, United Healthcare

ball, it’s possible that vision impairment might be affecting hand-eye coordination. This could also be due to a lazy eye, otherwise known as amblyopia. Amblyopia is when one eye is favored over the other, which can affect depth perception, making it difficult to assess objects in front of you.

Back-to-school season is in full swing and an ideal time to get your child’s eyes checked. Good eye health is important, in part because 80 percent of what children learn is through their eyes. The American Optometric Association recommends that a child’s first comprehensive eye exam should occur between 6 months and 12 months, again at age 3 and before entering school at age 5 or 6. However, despite these recommendations, more than one-third of Americans incorrectly believe children should receive a first comprehensive eye exam at age five or later, according to a recent United Healthcare survey. The inability to see clearly can affect a child’s physical, emotional and social development, which in turn can affect academic and athletic performance and, ultimately, self-esteem. Many times children are unaware and won’t complain if their vision isn’t normal, so it’s important to look for possible signs of vision problems. Also, it’s important to remember that a school’s vision screening is

not a substitute for a comprehensive eye exam. Vision screenings at school usually focus on measuring acuity levels and can miss common conditions such as poor eye alignment, focusing problems and farsightedness.

Goody Gourmet is a real treat for Milwaukee Milwaukee native Jacqueline Chesser had a good career with benefits working for a large insurance company, but despite her situation she said for many years she wanted to do something else with her life. One day, she was helping a friend search for an apartment in 2005 when she found the perfect storefront to realize her 15-year-long dream of opening her own business making unique, high-quality, affordable baked goods and candies.

Chesser said the new location would provide another retail location, more space for corporate headquarters, storage and allow Goody Gourmets to continue mentoring and teaching soft skills to local youth that will hopefully lead to college and better employment opportunities in the future.

There are many ways to purchase Goody Gourmet products, Chesser said. Along with walk-in sales, customers can place orders over the internet at www. Goody Gourmet sells goodygourmets.com. Rev. Howard Brown, Assoc. Pastor Calvary Baptist Church Reserve your seat now by calling the church office at (4I4) 445-1612 between 12 noon and 5:00 p.m., no later than September 24, 2018. Light refreshments will be served.

To celebrate its second anniversary as a non-profit, My Choice Family Care selected Friendship Bakery and LilyWorks Catering, which provide community employment to people with special needs, to provide food for its event. “We thought it was important to choose these vendors because we support community-based employment for our members with physical, intellectual, and developmental disabilities,” said My Choice Chief Operations Officer Betsy Van Heesch. Easter Seals of Southeast Wisconsin’s LilyWorks Catering provided lunch, while Friendship Bakery created the cake for the celebration. Larry Millard, hospitality manager at LilyWorks Catering, stressed the importance of local companies supporting the program. “Every time someone hires Lilyworks, they are helping our participants gain the skills to gain employment, and they are learning both hard and soft job skills,” he said. Working at events like the My Choice celebration gives LilyWorks participants the ability to learn how to interact with customers and to overcome any nervousness. “It’s a fantastic opportunity,”

Millard explained. LilyWorks Catering and Conference Center is a comprehensive, hands-on program providing real-world training in the food service industry in a fully operational banquet and conference center in Waukesha. Milwaukee Film announces generous support for the organization’s cultural pillar, Black Lens, by both The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and HBO. This announcement comes in conjunction with the complete Black Lens line-up at the 10th Annual Milwaukee Film Festival, in addition to revealing several of this year’s festival guests, such as Netflix star DeWanda Wise (She’s Gotta Have It), author and journalist Touré, and The New York Times assistant television editor, Aisha Harris. Highlighting the work of 20 contemporary African-American filmmakers through eight films and two shorts programs, Black Lens explores stories rooted in the Black community but relevant to a variety of audiences. Awarded $7,500 by The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Milwaukee Film is one of just 22 recipients of the esteemed FilmWatch grant. This is the second time the Black Lens program has been awarded a FilmWatch grant by The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, having previously received the award in 2016. HBO has awarded the program $10,000 and will be officially presenting the two Black Lens Shorts programs, along with a newly created Cream City juried award celebrating local, diverse filmmaking talent. “Receiving our second grant from the Academy in two years affirms the validity of our mission, the quality of the festival, and the work of the filmmakers we showcase,” said Black Lens co-programmer Geraud Blanks. “Include HBO’s stamp of approval on our shorts program, and there is simply no other way to put it, we’ve arrived.” Films at this year’s 10th Annual Milwaukee Film Festival include the much buzzed about documentary Sammy Davis Jr, I’ve Gotta Be Me, one of two new works featured by Samuel D. Pollard (The ACORN and the Firestorm, MFF 2017 and Two Trains Runnin’, MFF 2016), and A Boy. A Girl. A Dream by Qasim Basir (Destined, MFF 2017). “Year five of Black Lens marks a game-changing moment for us because we are building upon past successes and carving out a new path for where to take the film series,” states Donte McFadden, Black Lens co-programmer. “We continue to bring quality feature-length and short films, but we also are creating more events to further engage festival-goers.”

Hosted by Ellis Haizlip (hip, smart, innovative, and unapologetically gay), SOUL! was a celebration of all things black culture - with topics ranging from soul music to literature, poetry, politics, and everything in between, with a dazzling array of A-list guests (James Baldwin, Nikki Giovanni, and Stevie Wonder to name a few).
