ervoir Park, 626 East North Avenue, on the east hill of Kilbourn Reservoir Park; it’s the only American Legion Star emblem of its size in the United States. The monument template was initially filled with live flowers and plants and was maintained by the City of Milwaukee Water Works Department, but was discontinued in the 1990s due to the high cost of maintenance. In 2010, the live plants were replaced with the current concrete and stained glass but in 2014 it was determined that too would need to be repaired. In 2022, American Legion 5th District commanders met with managers of Milwaukee Water Works Department, regarding the restoration of the monument. The commanders were informed that the restoration would cost approximately $134,000 and that the Water Dept. only had $100,000 in funds for the restoration. The 5th District spearheaded the restoration project, by setting up a GoFundMe page called, “American Le gion Milwaukee Memorial Monument” to raise the remaining $34,000. The 5th District would appreciate it if you would share or donate to their GoFundMe page, so that they can help save this unique landmark that has been a symbol of Milwaukee's East side for so long.

On September 9,2022, the members of the Cream City (WI) chapter of the Links, Inc., will present its "8th Annu al Denim and Diamonds Gala" on a virtual format. This gala is the organization's annual fundraiser and "Denim and Diamonds" is its signature event. The theme this year is "Celebrating Black Entrepreneurship." During the pre sentation, the chapter will honor three outstanding en trepreneurs; they are Joanna Brooks and Embody Yoga; renowned vocalist Da’Quela Payne; and Alan Goodman of A Goodman’s Desserts. Their work and talent within the Milwaukee community have been exceptional. Pictured at a prerecording, for a segment to be shown during the on-line event are (from left) "Denim and Diamonds" Cochair Jennifer Armon; The Links, Inc. President Jacquelyn Rice; and "Denim and Diamonds" Co-chair Keona Jones. The members of the Links, Inc. hope that you can join them on the 9th at the 5:30 p.m. virtual event. On Saturday, August 20, 2022, Bishop Sedgwick Dan iels (right), who serves as pastor of the Holy Redeemer Church of God in Christ, along with representatives from Anthem Healthcare and the city of Milwaukee, celebrated the ribbon-cutting for the new CH Mason Community Health Clinic, 3500 West Mother Dan iels Way. After originally opening in 2008, the clinic was first run under the supervision of St. Michael’s Hospital. After St. Michael's closed, Aurora Health care stepped in and provided a parish nurse to oversee the clinic. However, after the retirement of that nurse the clinic was forced to close, leaving a huge void in the community for the individuals they served. Bish op Daniels along with his advisory board endeavored to reopen the health clinic in the fall of 2022. The new health clinic will provide routine services for people living in and around Holy Redeemer and the surrounding community.

After a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, The United Negro College Fund (UNCF) hosted their 38th Annual UNCF Milwaukee Walk for Education. The walk was held August 27, 2022, against the beautiful lakefront backdrop of Veteran’s Park, 1010 N. Lincoln Memorial Dr. This year's Honorary Chairperson was Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson who kicked off the event and welcomed everyone back to UNCF's Walk to raise funds for our city's deserving college students. He was joined by County Board of Supervisors Chairwoman Marcelia N. Nicholson. This year the walk raised more than $147,000 for African American students who are pursuing higher education. Although the UNCF walk is over, you can still support this year's effort until September 30 by visiting their website matchingkee.https://uncf.org/events/2022-uncf-national-walk-for-education-milwauatAlso,pleasebesuretocheckwithyouremployertoseeiftheyhaveagiftprogram.

• Soy-based formulas are a good choice for lac tose-intolerant new borns.

New parents make many important decisions, one of which is to breastfeed or use formula.

• Cow milk-based formula is simpler to digest than conventional cow milk since its nutrients are closer to breast milk.

What if your plans never included breastfeeding?

Nearly 20 percent of new U.S. moms don’t breastfeed and don’t always get help. If you’re not nursing, you need helpful, nonjudgmen tal answers to your concerns too. After giving birth, if you do not breastfeed or express milk, your milk will dry up on its own, usually within 7-10 days.

• Hydrolyzed proteins make digestion simpler. They’re a fantastic option for infants with cow milk or soy allergies.

Mothers may have issues while breastfeeding, like nip ple pain or inverted nipples. Formula helps ensure the baby is fed and the mother is taken care of as well.

Breast milk comes in three stages: colostrum, transition al, and mature.

If you live in Milwaukee and are considering natural breastfeeding, there is a won derful organization called the African American Breast feeding Network. They can answer your questions, offer encouragement and even set you up with a breastfeeding Dula. Breastfeeding vs. formu la-feeding

Gov. Tony Evers: Doing the Right Thing For Wisconsin Schools

Under Gov. Evers, Wisconsin public schools are funded at their highest level in 20 years. According to U.S. News and World Report, our schools are now ranked 8th best in the nation.

I understood the formula shortage, but I was sitting in a hospital bed feeling helpless with my crying baby after trying to latch her over and over, hoping she would pull a little more milk out of my boobs. I asked a few times to be able to have some formula for her, but I just kept getting told that I should keep trying while simultaneously letting them know that I know my children and they eat more than I am producing; they all have. It’s like they didn’t want to listen or believe me. What if you just can’t breastfeed?

There’s no shame in sup plementing breast milk with formula if you’re having trouble nursing your baby. According to research, the use of formula is associated with feelings of guilt and so cial stigma for women unable to breastfeed. It’s vital to re member that there’s no one right way to handle a baby, and that formula might be a perfectly acceptable substi tute for or even a preferred feeding method.

The mother’s decision about breastfeeding versus supplementation with for mula is the most important factor to take into account. Experts agree that breast milk is ideal, but they also point out that any amount is beneficial. Talking with your physician is the most effec tive way to get information on how to provide care for a baby in a way that is not only risk-free but also beneficial to the child’s health.

It’s Not Emotionally Possi ble. Some women who’ve un dergone trauma can’t nurse comfortably.Medications. No mother’s health or well-being should depend on nursing.

• Transitional milk lasts about two weeks and has lots of fat, lactose, and vi tamins.

• Skin-to-skin contact is a great way to bond with a new baby.

The three most common types of formula are cow

• It’s worth noting that bottle-feeding can give another partner a chance to bond with the baby. Medical professionals and their recommendations for mothers

After birth, doctors ad vise feeding an infant noth ing but breast milk for the first six months and then gradually introducing other foods over the next year. But for various reasons, not all mothers can nurse their ba bies. When moms are pushed into breastfeeding when they don’t want to or are unable to, some medical profession als don’t realize their impact on the mothers. Not one per son should be made to feel bad about it either.

Lifestyle choices

For example, I have three children, and I have always been able to do both if I choose to. Not being given the option in the hospital to even try giving my baby for mula the third time around was irritating. I was not given formula as a supplement just in case for my third child. All my children had eaten more in the hospital when they were first born, so even though I may have latched them right away, they were still hungry.

Is the baby getting enough milk? Breastfeeding can take time to get used to, and the amount of milk produced is related to the amount the baby drinks. With formula, it’s easy to measure precisely how much milk is used for eachWorkingfeeding.

It’s a frequent misunder standing that formula is equivalent to breast milk.

There are many non-nutri tional benefits to breastfeed ing as well:

Natural Breastmilk is the gold stan dard for infants because it aids brain development and boosts the immune system. Formula does not boost the immune system as breastmilk does. Infants who are breast fed have lower mortality rates and infections than those who are formula-fed.

Some women need to use formula due to medical rea sons. HIV/AIDS-positive mothers risk passing the vi rus through their breastmilk, and certain medications can harm the baby through breastmilk too. Formula then becomes the safest option for feeding.

It’s Your Decision, No One Else’s. You don’t need a cause not to breastfeed.

stress of working and being a parent. With formula, any one can feed the baby, giving the mother more flexibility. Workplace resources may not be available to support pumping or breastfeeding.

How do you choose which is right for you, breastfeeding or formula-feeding?
