Miss America Nia Imani Franklin is happy she didn’t have to endure swimsuit competition

“All these women onstage are more than just that,” Miss America 2019 Nia Imani Franklin said after her win. Miss America 2019 winner Nia Imani Franklin is glad she didn’t have to wear a swimsuit for the competition. “I’m happy that I didn’t have to do so to win this title tonight because I’m more than just that,” Franklin told the Associated Press after her victory on Sunday, September 9, 2018. “And all these women onstage are more than just that.” Franklin competed as Miss New York and was crowned Miss America 2019 at the organization’s annual pageant in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Winning a $50,000 scholarship, Franklin takes over the crown from Miss America 2018 Cara Mund.

“These changes, I think, will be great for our organization,” Franklin continued. “I’ve already seen so many young women reaching out to me personally as Miss New York asking how they can get involved because I think they feel more empowered that they don’t have to do things such as walk in a swimsuit for a scholarship.” Miss America chair Gretchen Carlson announced in June that the swimsuit competition would no longer be included in the pageant as it evolves with the times, especially in light of the recent #MeToo movement. The organization has endured a tumultuous few weeks, after Mund accused

In a recent interview with HuffPost, Mund said she hopes the next Miss America will have a very different experience than she did.

“The whole reason for this past year and everything that’s happened to me is so that I can make it better for the next girl. I have about two and a half weeks left, but she’s going to have a whole year,” Mund said. “I just don’t want the next girl to have the same kind of experience that I’ve had, and if for some reason her experihave since called for the or- ence happens to be similar, ganization’s entire board, at least now she knows that including Carlson, to resign. she’s supported and that her Carlson denied all of Mund’s voice does matter.” accusations.

Gayle King says CBS "must have transparency" with Les Moonves investigation Longtime CBS chairman and CEO Les Moonves resigned Sunday, September 9, 2018, after new sexual abuse allegations by seven women were published. Two independent law firms are investigating the claims but the public may never know what CBS is able to discover about his behavior because the company agreed to keep the probe confidential. It's a

notion that CBS This Morning co-host Gayle King finds disturbing. "In our own house, we must have transparency," King said on the broadcast Tuesday morning. "I am so sorry, again, that it hits so close to home for us. I'm sick and sick of the story and sickened by everything that we keep hearing. But the part you mentioned about

transparency is very disturbing to me because I would think, how can we have this investigation and not know how it comes out? Les Moonves has been on the record, he says, listen, he didn't do these things, it was consensual, that he hasn't hurt anybody's career. I would (Continued on pg. 3)

#MeToo was started for black and brown women and girls but they’re still being ignored By Tarana Burke, founder #MeToo movement My favorite diner is in Montgomery, AL. When I lived there more than 10 years ago, as often as I could, I ate there. The staff was super friendly; the eating area was clean enough and the food was delicious. The servers were mostly black women; the main cook was a black man. I liked to sit at the counter and order my food and talk to the servers. When I did, I’d often see the same disgusting behavior on the part of the cook toward various waitresses. She would shout out the order to him, and if she was not within his reach, he would say something like, “Bring your tail down here — you know I can’t hear you!” And if the waitress complied, at least 50 percent of the time, he would stand directly in front of her, practically close enough to plant a kiss on her lips and say something like, “What you gonna do for it?” Over time I watched this

routine play out in different ways. Arms slinked around waists, rear ends tapped, shoulders rubbed. Sometimes the waitresses pushed back — but only a little. Mostly, they learned to navigate the narrow space behind the counter and figure out ways to save one another from his vile, undesired advances. I was so outraged that I once got into a screaming match with the cook. I told him if he wouldn’t respect the waitresses, he would respect me as a customer and not openly sexually harass these women in front of me. In between admonishments to mind my “saddity” New York business, he told me that this was the way he and the women “played around” at work. He was so mad at me confronting him that he had to take a smoke break. While he was outside, the woman who I defended tried to reassure me that it was okay. When I asked her how she could put up with his gross behavior, she said simply, “He’s the boss.”

#MeToo Founder Tarana Burke

These last few weeks have been a whirlwind. Actually, they have been more like a floating sidewalk scene from a Spike Lee movie. From the start of #MeToo going viral and the recognition of my years of work preceding it, I have been happily allowing this wave of attention to shine a much-needed light on the fight to end gender-based violence. I founded the “me too” movement in 2006 because I wanted to find a way to connect with the black and brown girls in the program I ran. But if I am being honest with myself, and you, I often wonder if that sister in the diner has even heard of #MeToo, and if she has, does she know it’s for #UsToo? Black women have been screaming about famous predators like R&B singer R. Kelly, who allegedly preys on black girls, for well over a decade to no avail. Anita Hill, thanklessly, put herself and her career as a law professor on the line more than 25 years ago to publicly name Clarence Thomas for sexually harassing her at work. Actress Jane Fonda acknowledged this fact during a recent interview about the public reaction to allegations of sexual harassment and assault from multiple women against movie producer Harvey Weinstein. “It feels like something has shifted. It’s too bad that it’s probably because so many of the women that were assaulted by Harvey Weinstein are famous and white and everybody knows them. This has been going on a long time to black women and other women of

color and it doesn’t get out quite the same.” Native American women have the highest rate of sexual assault in the country. According to the Department of Justice, American Indians are 2.5 times more likely to experience sexual assault crimes compared to all other races, and one in three Indian women reports having been raped in her lifetime. Yet they are never named in the national conversation about sexual violence. Statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that women of color experience a higher rate of sexual violence. In a survey of adult women in 2010, 22 percent of non-Hispanic blacks, 18.8 percent of non-Hispanic whites, 14.6 percent of Hispanics and 35.5 percent of women of multiple races said they had experienced an attempted or a completed rape at some time in their lives. The Bureau of Justice Statistics also reports that lower income women experience some of

think it would be in his best interest for us to hear what the report finds out. On the other hand, you have women who are coming forward, very credibly, talking about something that's so painful and so humiliating. It's been my experience that women don't come out and speak this way for no reason. They

the highest rates of sexual violence. Even in high school, students of color report higher rates of sexual violence: 12.5 percent of American Indian/Alaska Natives, 10.5 percent of Native Hawaiian/ Pacific Islander students, 8.6 percent of black students, 8.2 percent of Hispanic students, 7.4 percent of white students and 13.5 percent of multiple-race students reported that they were forced to have sexual intercourse at some time in their lives. The young girls of color that first encountered the “me too” movement in community centers and classrooms and church basements were there not only because they needed a safe space, but because they needed their own space. They needed to find spaces where they could focus on their healing without having to be performative or guarded and “me too” gave them that space. Tarana Burke is senior director of programs at girls for Gender Equity in Brooklyn. Follow her work at @metooMVMT. just don't. They just don't do it. And so I don't know how we move forward if we don't – we at CBS – don't have full transparency about what we find." Moonves could collect a $120 million severance payment if the independent investigation finds CBS had no grounds to remove him. For now, he will remain an unpaid adviser to CBS, with a company-provided office in New York or Los Angeles along with home security services.

The Counseling Corner

By Rev. Judith T. Lester, B.Min. M.Th

Fall is coming! #ANewSeason: Week 3 - eat healthy! “Aprils have never meant much to me, autumn seem that season of beginning…” -Truman Capote This month’s series focus is on wiping the axiomatic slate clean and starting #ANewSeason by taking advantage of the opportunity to start afresh. The last two weeks, this writer looked at the benefits of jumpstarting a regular physical activity routine; for the next two weeks, this column will feature the 8 benefits of jumpstarting healthy eating habits as identified by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS). Habits 1-2 will be outlined this week and the balance will be provided in next week’s article. According to the HHS, unhealthy eating habits have

contributed to the obesity epidemic in the United States: about one-third of U.S. adults (33.8 percent) are obese and approximately 17 percent (or 12.5 million) children and adolescents aged 2—19 years are obese. Even for people at a healthy weight, a poor diet is associated with major health risks that can cause illness and even death. These include heart disease, hypertension (high blood pressure), type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, and certain types of cancer. By making smart food choices, you can help protect yourself from these health problems. The risk factors for adult chronic diseases, like hypertension and type 2 diabetes, are increasingly seen in younger ages, often a result of unhealthy eating habits and increased weight gain.

Dietary habits established in childhood often carry into adulthood, so teaching children how to eat healthy at a young age will help them stay healthy throughout their life. The link between good nutrition and healthy weight, reduced chronic disease risk, and overall health is too important to ignore. By taking steps to eat healthy, you'll be on your way to getting the nutrients your body needs to stay healthy, active, and strong. As with physical activity, making small changes in your diet can go a long way, and it's easier than you think! Eight healthy eating goals The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has identified 8 healthy eating goals: HHS tip #1: Make half your plate fruits and vege-

tables. Choose red, orange, and dark-green vegetables like tomatoes, sweet potatoes, and broccoli, along with other vegetables for your meals. Add fruit to meals as part of main or side dishes or as dessert. The more colorful you make your plate, the more likely you are to get the vitamins, minerals, and fiber your body needs to be healthy. HHS tip #2: Make half the grains you eat whole grains. An easy way to eat more whole grains is to switch from a refined-grain food to a whole-grain food. For example, eat wholewheat bread instead of white bread. Read the ingredients list and choose products that list a whole-grain ingredient first. Look for things like: "whole wheat," "brown rice," "bulgur," "buckwheat," "oat-

meal," "rolled oats," quinoa," or "wild rice." Tips 3-8 will continue next week. Be sure to pick up your copy of the Milwaukee Times Newspaper and share one with a friend. Next Week: Continuation The writer does not assume responsibility or liability for any injury, loss or damage incurred in any way for readers’ efforts to apply, rely or utilize information or recommendations made in these articles. Rather, the objective is strictly informative and educational. If you would like to contact Rev. Lester, write her c/o P.O. Box 121, Brookfield, WI. 53008.

What this election means for Wisconsinites’ health care By U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin Last month, Vice President Mike Pence visited Wisconsin. Moments after landing in Milwaukee, he was asked about my new legislation to protect the more than 2 million Wisconsinites who have pre-existing conditions. In his response, with just a few words, Vice President Pence outlined what this U.S. Senate election is really about: Health care for millions of Wisconsinites. The Vice President said, “We made an effort to fully repeal and replace Obamacare, and we’ll continue with Leah Vukmir in the Senate. We’ll continue to go back to that.” The health care repeal effort that the Vice President is referencing caused an outpouring of concern and outrage from Wisconsinites across the state. Washington was on the verge of ram-

ming through a special interest-backed bill that would have put insurance companies back in charge of Wisconsinites’ health care, jacked up costs and premiums, led to millions more uninsured, gutted protections for people with pre-existing conditions and imposed an age tax on Wisconsinites 50 years and older, according to the AARP. That repeal bill failed by just one vote. If my U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin opponent, Leah Vukmir, had been in the U.S. Senate last summer, she would pre-existing conditions. One have been the deciding vote young man survived canon taking people’s health cer. Another little girl has care away. congenital heart defects. A That vote would have had young boy named Jack aldire consequences for so ready lost his big brother to many Wisconsin families. a rare genetic disease, but Recently in Oshkosh, I sat there is hope that he’ll get down with some of those the treatment he needs to live families. Their children have a full, happy life. Each of their parents told me how much pre-existing condition protections mean to them. It can save them from bankruptcy — and it can help save their child’s life too. That’s something worth fighting for. That’s why I voted to protect people’s health care. The way I view it, I wasn’t sent to Washington to take people’s health care away — I believe my job is to fix the system,

not to blow it up and throw millions of people off their health care. After that vote, I’ve worked to push forward plans that can fix the system, lower costs and get more Wisconsinites covered. That’s what we should be working towards, but Leah Vukmir is focused on moving us backwards and putting the insurance companies back in charge. This contrast was on display last month, as I introduced legislation to overturn the Trump administration’s expansion of junk insurance plans, which can deny coverage to people with pre-existing conditions and don’t have to cover essential services like prescription drugs, emergency room visits and maternity care. And earlier this month, a federal court is hearing arguments in a case that could end the protections Wisconsinites with preexisting conditions have today. Yet, in both of these instances, Leah Vukmir has sided with powerful insurance companies over Wisconsinites with pre-existing conditions. She has come out in strong opposition to my legislation to stop junk insurance plans, she supports the harmful lawsuit to eliminate

protections, and she backs the approach being pushed by big insurance companies. They would like to see the protections Wisconsinites have today eliminated, and then throw people with pre-existing conditions back into high-risk pools. This system was once in place here in Wisconsin, and while some people were covered, over half a million Wisconsinites were left uninsured, many families couldn’t afford the expensive plans, and they also faced sixmonth waiting periods and lifetime caps for their care. I know what that was like. When I was nine years old, I was at a Badgers game but I had to leave early with a high fever. I ended up spending three months in the hospital. I fully recovered, but insurance companies had stuck me with the label of having a “pre-existing condition.” My grandparents who raised me couldn’t find coverage for me, at any price. That’s what makes the fight to protect Wisconsinites with pre-existing conditions so personal to me. And I know it’s personal for so many Wisconsin families across the state too. No one should be worried sick that anyone in their family will be denied coverage or face lifetime caps in their futures. That’s not the Wisconsin way.

Bulletin Board

Reagan hosts Assistant Secretary of Education Frank Brogan Milwaukee’s Ronald Wilson Reagan College Preparatory High School was the only school in Wisconsin to make the list of visits for Assistant Secretary of Education Frank Brogan this week. On a mission to find out what’s working in U.S. schools, the Department of Education staff has fanned out across the country to hear student and educator voices, including a visit to Milwaukee on Tuesday, September 11, 2018. Brogan described efforts among his colleagues to meet with education professionals who are challenging the status quo and taking innovative approaches to student learning. Under the department’s

Rethinking Education initiative, a list was devised of schools with a reputation for innovation and for rethinking outmoded practices. At

Reagan, Brogan was especially interested in anti-bullying efforts. During a large roundtable discussion, students de-

scribed efforts to build a positive culture that begin before new freshmen even set foot in the building on the first day of class. Freshman orientation and mentorships, encouragement of self-expression, consistent coaching throughout the school day, and engagement activities such as dances and inclusion programs all build school connectedness and a positive culture. Brogan was impressed by efforts to build self-esteem and how high expectations contribute to student success and leadership. In other parts of the country, he observed how anti-bullying efforts are sometimes punitive or exclusionary. “You’re doing some im-

pressive things here,” Brogan observed. “When everyone feels good, there’s no need to bully.” He noted how student support of other students has built a culture in which negativity is not tolerated and success is multiplied. This week, Brogan and other leaders from the U.S. Department of Education will travel to more than 40 states, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands to highlight key federal education initiatives and to study efforts that can help improve education across the country. Congratulations to Reagan High School for its hard work that has earned the national spotlight!

Dear MPS Students and Families, With much enthusiasm and excitement, I welcome you back for another great school year with Milwaukee Public Schools! The start of the new school year is one of my favorite times of year. It’s a fresh start for our students, families, and staff, and is the perfect time to recommit ourselves to the very important work ahead. Exciting things are happening in MPS, and our staff have been working diligently to prepare for a strong year. As we begin our 2018–19 school year, I firmly believe that we will make progress in our district with a strong academic focus in reading, writing, and mathematics. We are committed to applying the following Five Priorities for Success. • Increasing academic achievement and accountability • Improving district and school culture • Developing our staff • Ensuring fiscal responsibility and transparency • Strengthening communication and collaboration We are also focused on ensuring that every student is in school every day, and that all students are getting the support they need. We launched

Six ways to boost your energy without caffeine Just can’t say no to Starbucks? Don’t worry, you’re not alone in this caffeinated battle. According to a research study, more than 85 percent of American adults consume some form of caffeine daily, with 164 mg a day being the average. Furthermore, at least 68 million Americans drink three cups of coffee every single day and more than 50 percent of Americans over the age of 18 consume caffeine on a daily basis. Those are some big numbers and whether it comes in the form of coffee, tea, soda, or energy drinks, the majority of our country is dependent on caffeine to perk them up. However, too much caffeine can lead to jitters, energy crashes, increased heart risks, and other serious health issues if left unchecked. So, what can you do to up your energy without caffeine? Check out these natural remedies.

Sunlight Yup! Getting in some much-needed sun will actually boost your mood and help to produce the valuable Vitamin D nutrient within your body. Sunshine provides many benefits, including bone health and immune function, and getting enough helps keep you feeling energetic and healthy. Go for a walk or sit at the park for an hour or two at least once a day. Exercise Exercise not only does the body good physically but emotionally and mentally

too. Maintaining a moderate active exercise routine is an important factor to boost and maintain high energy. Any exercise or physical activity that gets your heart rate up and blood flowing will release endorphins and raise your energy level. Water Water just might be the cure-all to low energy. In fact, a 2015 British study found that one in five people who went to their doctors complaining of chronic exhaustion were actually just dehydrated.

It’s recommended that women drink a minimum of nine cups of water a day while men should drink a minimum of 13. So, when your tank is low, fuel up with water, water, and more water! Sleep Let’s be real, only a handful of us actually get in our recommended 7-8 hours of sleep a night. But when it comes to replenishing your body with much-needed rest, it can do wonders for your energy levels. It may not always be possible to constantly achieve the recommended set of sleep hours but try and take advantage of it when you can. Eat smart and frequently Do you usually go for high sugary drinks, donuts, and pancakes first thing in the morning? If you want to increase and actually keep a steady energy level throughout your day you’ll want to avoid sugary and processed foods. These quick and easy treats will provide you with

only short bursts of energy but not enough nutrients for the long haul. For more sustained energy, opt to eat whole grains, proteins, leafy greens, and fruits every two hours as these foods take longer for your body to break down, ensuring that you will receive a consistent dose of energy throughout your day. Music Last but certainly not least, get an instant boost of energy when you play your favorite upbeat jam. A 2013 study found that an up-tempo BPM range produces a motivational effect in the brain. Researchers found music has drug-like effects on the brain and was found to release dopamine, the “feelgood hormone” that is activated from pleasurable experiences like food or sex. So, whether you’re into R&B, hip-hop or pop, wake-up to an energetic playlist to get you out of bed and in the mood to take on the day.

cal needs of children, adults, and families. In an interview with Black Doctor.com, we learn the importance of getting your child help and different signs parents need to know if their child suffers from mental illness. BDO: What has been your experience in working with children who have a mental illness? KW: An area of my social work practice that has been a sacred place for me involves children with mental illness. During my career I have implemented many therapeutic interventions for children with mental illness which have included family therapy, play therapy, talk therapy, social skills groups, parenting classes/support groups and behavioral management techniques. BDO: There are many signs of mental illness that parents may not notice, what are some signs parents should pay attention to with their children? KW: One of the major concerns that some parents often deal with involves their children having mental health challenges. This includes depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorders, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, to name a few. It is

important to recognize when your child has a change in behavior or seems to display emotional distress that may seem unusual for your child. It is crucial for your child to be examined by a pediatrician to rule out any medical condition that may be contributing to behavioral changes. If your child’s pediatrician determines that there is no underlying medical condition, your pediatrician will likely refer your child to a mental health professional. These are some behavioral changes to recognize that parents should be aware of; however, children may not display all these symptoms and some symptoms may be specific for a particular illness. It is also critical to be mindful of the duration of time that these symptoms are present. Typically, these symptoms are present two weeks or longer, but this may not always be the case. • Sad or withdrawn from family or friends • Crying excessively for no apparent reason • Severe mood swings • Fearful for no reason • Angry outbursts • Change in eating/sleeping habits • Difficulty concentrating (Continued on pg. 17) www.milwaukeetimesnews.com

Homeownership was once the cornerstone of the American Dream, but times are changing. More U.S. households are renting today than at any point in the last 50 years, according to a Pew Research Center analysis. For many people, the comforts of home include a well-funded bank account -and in some circumstances, renting can be more financially savvy than buying. Ask yourself these questions as you make long-term housing decisions. You might find that renting is the better option. 1. How long do you plan to stay? Whether renting or buying a home is the best financial choice usually comes down to one thing: timing. Finding an affordable home (and later making a profit on it) depends heavily on how long you plan to keep the property. According to Zillow, for instance, the current home listing price in Bothell, Washington, is $698,448, and the average rental price is $2,500. Assuming a 20 percent down payment on a home purchase or a 5 percent annual increase in rental price, you'd need to own the home for at least two years before it becomes the better option. Keep in mind that not every market is booming. In fact, two-thirds of U.S. homes still haven't returned to their pre-recession values, according to a Trulia

report, and owners looking to cash out may have to wait until 2025 before securing a profit. Carrying debt is something of a risk, and a 12-month lease gives you the freedom to move and adjust your housing expenses based on your current needs and income level -- two things a fixed mortgage can't deliver. Do your homework and use a comparison calculator to help you understand the costs of buying and renting. 2. Do you know all the costs? Comparing rental prices to mortgage payments is a good start, but it's also important to consider the hidden costs associated with each. For renters, the "cost" is the lack of home equity and the inability to claim housing-related tax breaks. For example, suppose you're a homeowner who lives in New York and falls within the 28 percent income tax bracket. If your mortgage is $200,000 with a 4.5 percent interest rate, you qualify for $3,585 a year

It’s time to recognize those who have made positive impacts in our lives and community.

in tax deductions. That said, you'll also deal with expenses that don't impact a renter's monthly budget, including: Homeowner's insurance: Protecting your home from damage comes at a price, and while insurance rates vary, the rule of thumb is to divide your home's value by 1,000 and multiply the result by $3.50. If you home's value is $200,000, for instance, you'd pay around $700 per year, or $58 per month, for coverage. Renter's insurance, meanwhile, is usually less than $20 per month. Private mortgage insurance (PMI): If you have less than 20 percent equity in your home, expect to pay PMI, which is usually between 0.50 percent and 1.2 percent of your loan value. For example, 1 percent assessed on your $200,000 mortgage would add $200 to your monthly housing expenses until you built up at least 20 percent equity in your home. Property taxes: A typical

household spends $2,127 each year on property taxes, but you could pay much more depending on location and community benefits. Maintenance: Homeowners shell out nearly $170 per month on average for regular maintenance and repairs, and that's not including big-ticket items like a roof repair, a new HVAC system, and other needs that can cost four or five figures. In this scenario, owning that $200,000 home costs $7,267 a year in extra expenses -- more than double what you'd save in taxes. As a renter, you won't need to worry about adding these fluctuating expenses to your budget, and your landlord may even pick up the tab for your utilities, saving you even more compared to the average homeowner. Consider the hidden costs to learn whether those big tax breaks are worth it. 3. Are you "throwing money away?" It's often said that renting is "throwing money away,"

but building home equity isn't the only way to watch your money grow. There's no denying that property can be a valuable asset, but on a month-to-month basis, owning a home is still more expensive in all 50 states, according to a 2017 NerdWallet analysis, and an inflated budget can seriously impact your ability to save for retirement. According to the Economic Policy Institute (EPI), the average American has less than $5,000 in savings, and couples between age 50 and 55 only have about $125,000 earmarked for their golden years. That's not nearly enough to fund a long and financially secure retirement, and lower monthly costs can help you divert funds into catch-up 401(k) and IRA contributions, liquid savings, and other investments. For instance, if you're 50 and can save $500 a month in housing-related costs, investing it at a 7 percent return will yield almost $169,000 by the time you reach age 66. Over the course of several years, you'll likely come out ahead by owning rather than renting. However, if you have reason to doubt your ability to keep up with the costs of homeownership, or if purchasing a home would leave you unable to save for the future, then renting could be the more responsible choice for now.

Hundreds of people ― including 75 of Johnson’s children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren ― attended the event honoring the woman who was portrayed by Taraji P. The scholarship in Johnson’s name was awarded to freshmen Jasiaha Daniels and Alexis Scudero, both of whom are studying in the science, technology, engineering and math fields. “What makes Katherine
