Medical Mission at Home in Milwaukee: A day of free healthcare

Photos by Yvonne Kemp

On Saturday, September 14, 2019, Ascension Wisconsin hosted its first ever "Medical Mission at Home," at North Division High School, 1011 West Center St. The term "medical mission" often refers to volunteer caregivers who travel to other countries to provide medical services. The Ascension Wisconsin Medical Mission at Home does the same thing for neighbors in need, right here in our own community. The Medical Mission at Home offers spiritually centered care to improve the health of our neighbors, friends and any one who may find it difficult to access healthcare. More than 500 volunteers from all over the community offered reg-

istered attendees free medical exams, dental care, medicine, lab testing, imaging and mammograms, foot washing and podiatry screenings, specialty care, spiritual care, and follow-up services. Among those volunteering were members of the Milwaukee Urban League including President and CEO Dr. Eve Hall (left photo, from left); Ascension Vice President of Medical Affairs O'Rell (Ron) Williams M.D.; Ascension Columbia St. Mary's Community Outreach Coordinator Penelope Stewart; Milwaukee Common Council President Ashanti Hamilton; and Ascension Columbia St. Mary's Hospital nurse Julia Means, RN.

On Sunday, September 15, 2019, Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church, 1345 West Burleigh Street, hosted a street naming ceremony in honor of their late pastor the Honorable Rev. Willie D. Wanzo, Sr. Rev. Wanzo was the pastor of one of Milwaukee’s most prominent Black churches, Metropolitan M.B.C. and served as their pastor for more than four decades. The section of street at the corner of West Burleigh Street from North 13th Street to North 14th Street in the 6th Aldermanic District was re-named to honor Rev. Wanzo. At the ceremony was Mayor Tom Barrett, along with Rev. Wanzo's family, church family, religious leaders and local officials. Rev. Wanzo moved to Milwaukee in 1951, arriving from his birthplace of Pine County, Mississippi. He joined Metropolitan under the leadership of Rev. A. W. Wise, serving as a deacon, assistant Sunday School teacher and supervisor. Rev. Wanzo accepted his call to the ministry in 1955 and he served as assistant pastor of the church from 1955 to 1972 under the late Rev. E. M. Kelley. He was appointed interim pastor in August 1972 and installed as pastor in August 1973. An NCON Communications Publication

analyzed the neighborhood and population characteristics surrounding each playfield to create a priority list of projects that emphasized racial and economic equity. "We started this journey to reimagine 52 playfields in 2014, and after a great deal of support and a lot of hard work, our vision is becoming reality," Milwaukee Recreation senior director Lynn Greb said. "We selected Custer Playfield as one of our first projects because it checked all of our criteria. It is our honor to return this play space back to the residents in a condition far better than what it was." Milwaukee Recreation will continue its playfield progress this fall, when the department breaks ground on the Clovernook and Franklin Square Playfields. Stay tuned for details!

Custer is the second playfield to reopen. Many of Milwaukee Recreation’s playfields were built in the 1920s and 1930s. The existing outdoor recreation system is comprised of 52 active use playfields encompassing more than 300 acres of programmed space. The majority of these sites serve as neighborhood scale parks with traditional recreational facilities such as ball fields, tot lots, tennis courts, field houses, and general open space. In 2014, the department retained a consultant to conduct a review of its existing facilities and provide a roadmap for improvements to the playfields. The result was the Milwaukee Outdoor Recreation Facilities Master Plan. The plan rated 65 percent of the facilities as fair to poor, and identified more than $25 million in needed improvements over a 10-year span. The department then

Milwaukee Recreation's emphasis on equity across the city shone brightly once again, as the department hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Custer Playfield on Saturday, Sept. 14 to unveil the playfield’s newly constructed basketball courts, age-appropriate play structures, and walking path. "By making this investment, Milwaukee Public Schools has demonstrated once again that its number one priority is the children of this community," Mayor Tom Barrett said. The event was filled with dozens of Milwaukeeans, including the district officials who facilitated the project, the managers who constructed the site, and the children who will enjoy the revamped playfield for years to come. Neighborhood residents from Chuck's Block Watch also treated the community to a party featuring playground activities, roller skating, face painting, a moon bounce, and a visit from the Milwaukee Police Department's free ice cream truck. Four safety tips for your newborn For new moms and dads, bringing home a newborn baby is surely an exciting time! It’s also a time that comes with a few preliminary cautions. Make steps to ease your worries by keeping these four safety tips in mind. 1. Beware of SIDS SIDS, also known as Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, is a sudden and unexplained death of a baby younger than 1 year of age that occurs during sleep. To decrease the risks, it’s important to place your baby on their back for naps, including bedtime. Be sure you only place your baby on a firm mattress that is safety-approved. By placing a baby on soft surfaces like water beds, soft mattresses, sofa cushions, and pillows, the risk of SIDS gets

higher. Never use any toys, loose bedding, baby blankets, or pillows in the crib with your baby at any time. 2. Pay attention to the temperature Just as difficult as it may be for adults to find an enjoyable temperature within the home, it is common for parents to wonder what a proper temperature should be to keep their baby safe and comfortable, too. Experts recommend maintaining a room temperature between 65 to 74 degrees. By maintaining a comfortable temperature, your little one will breathe better and ultimately sleep better, too. This goes for taking your little one outside or into a hot car as well. Avoid any temperatures over 74 degrees.

space that you can soften up, like the sharp edges of the coffee table, chairs, side tables, and even some couches. Now is the time to baby-proof to avoid any knicks or cuts that come with a busy baby. Lastly, don’t forget about your television! According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), approximately ten children die each year due to falling TVs. Take precautions with unstable heavy electronics and 3. Car safety is highly importfant swings, car seats, couch- ant It is not uncommon to es, beds, or with any pets to avoid falls and injuries. Also, want to see your little one’s look for areas of your living glowing face in your rear

view mirror while driving, especially when they are fussy. However, before a child hits one year of age, their head is substantially disproportionate to their body, causing harm if facing forward during an accident. During impact, their head will fall forward more dramatically, increasing the likelihood and severity of spinal cord and neck injuries. Ensure your child’s safety by keeping them in a rear-facing car seat until they are at least 1 year old and 20 lbs. Also, never under any circumstances leave your baby in the car unattended, ride with your infant in your lap, or put your baby in the front passenger seat of your car, not even in a car seat.

Men: Here are five ways stress affects your body According to the Men’s Health Foundation, high stress, poor sleep and eating habits increase the risks of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity, depression, and other mental illnesses in men. It can also cause low testosterone and erectile dysfunction. Men, when it comes down to it, is it really worth it? Here’s what stress can also do to your body: 1. You may lose hair There are three types of hair loss that can be associated with high stress levels. Tel-

ogen effluvium is tied to a significant amount of stress and pushes large numbers of hair follicles into a resting phase. Within a few months, affected hairs might fall out suddenly when simply combing or washing your hair. Trichotillomania is another condition in which a person experiences irresistible urges to pull out hair from the scalp, eyebrows or other areas of the body. Hair pulling can be a way of dealing with negative or uncomfortable sion, loneliness, boredom, or feelings, such as stress, ten- frustration.

And lastly, alopecia areata, in which a variety of factors are thought to cause hair loss, including severe stress. With alopecia areata, the body’s immune system attacks the hair follicles, causing hair loss. 2. You may gain a gut Stress is most definitely connected to weight gain. The high level of the stress hormone, cortisol, has been shown to increase appetite, drive cravings for food, and make it much easier to accumulate belly fat. So, in this instance, you’re not only packing on the pounds, but you’re also slowing down your metabolism and burning fewer calories. 3. You may get acne There are many causes of adult acne in men, but stress

is among the most common. Stress causes an increase in the androgen hormone, which stimulates your sebaceous glands to overproduce sebum. The androgen hormone is responsible for developing male traits. You might think having excess is a good thing, but it’s not. Your body needs a balance of it. 4. You may lose your vision When we are severely stressed and anxious, high levels of adrenaline in the body can cause pressure on the eyes resulting in blurred vision. People with longterm anxiety can suffer from eye strains during the day on a regular basis. Stress may actually be one of the major causes of eye diseases, like glaucoma. 5. You may lose muscle tone Chronic stress can throw your hormones out of balance. Persistent stress is likely to decrease the level of anabolic hormones like testosterone and increase the level of catabolic hormones like cortisol, which is an unhealthy balance. Low levels of testosterone and elevated levels of cortisol affect energy and inhibit muscle development.
