Epsilon Kappa Omega honors Mabel Emily Watson Raimey with headstone dedication

On Saturday, September 17, 2022, Epsilon Kappa Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.®, hosted a private memorial and head stone dedication in the Landmark Chapel at Forest Home Cemetery and Arboretum, 2405 W. Forest Home Ave., to honor local African American pioneer Mabel Emily Watson Raimey. The chapter had been fundraising since May 2021 for the headstone to honor Raimey. But who was Ma bel Emily Watson Raimey and what did she do? Besides being a charter member of Epsilon Kappa Omega Chapter in 1949, Raimey was the first African American woman to attend Marquette University Law School, the first black woman to practice law in Wisconsin, a founding member

and director of the Milwaukee Urban League from 1919 to 1955, mem bership chair for the first initiates to the Epsilon Kappa Omega Chapter in 1951, and contributor helping to cement a north-side YWCA facility in 1984, in addition to her trusteeship at West Allis Tabernacle Church. "As Alpha Kappa Alpha women, our chapter considers today a true hon or to pause and place an exclamation point on Raimey's service, commu nity impact, and trailblazing legacy," said President of the Epsilon Kappa Omega Chapter Debra Brown-Wallace. "Now with a proper headstone, Raimey can be an inspiration of future generations to come."

Greater Milwaukee Urban League helps welcome Auer Avenue students back-to-school

Mt. Carmel MBC hosts class on Modern Black Architects

On Friday September 16, 2022, Mt. Carmel Mission ary Baptist Church, 1717 W. Meinecke Ave. and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee School of Architecture held a class on Modern Architecture by Black Architects, which featured works by Alonzo Robin son, the first black architect in the state of Wisconsin. The class was attended by students and instructors from Milwaukee and Chicago. The students used la ser scanners to view the work that was done by hand drawing of Alonzo Robinson and it showed how Rob inson used modern architecture in his work when de signing churches all around the city of Milwaukee. He would design the buildings so that they would blend in with the existing neighborhood.

On Tuesday, September 6, 2022, the Greater Milwaukee Urban League (GMUL) and the Auer Avenue Community School staff welcomed the 2022/2023 class of students back to school with a red carpet celebration, to help kick off the school year. Auer Ave. Teachers, GMUL volunteers and other members of the community gathered to cheer on students and offer "high-fives." Council votes to make Juneteenth an official city holiday

On Tuesday, September 20, 2022, the Common Council approved an ordinance mak ing Juneteenth Day an offi cial city holiday.

The legislation – Council file #220475 – was authored by Alderwoman Milele A. Coggs.

“Juneteenth Day (June 19) holds a special significance for so many people -- it is a federal holiday and a few years ago Milwaukee County passed legislation recognizing Juneteenth Day as an official holiday and it is time now for this important day to be rec ognized officially at the city level,” Alderwoman Coggs said.

“Juneteenth Day rep resents a significant moment in history for many in this country. I want to thank my colleagues for their over whelming support of this file and recognition of the im portance of Juneteenth Day,” she said.

Milwaukee’s participation in the annual Juneteenth Day Celebration, a national event commemorating the end of slavery in the United States, is one of the nation’s oldest (more than 50 years) and is Milwaukee’s longest-running cultural festival.

Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson makes $1.7-billion budget proposal

The proposal comes during a time of rising homicide rates and other issues citywide

Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson made his first bud get proposal as mayor Tues day, September 20, 2022, morning.

It provides an inside look at how Johnson plans to tackle the issues facing Milwaukee.

It comes at a time of sky rocketing homicide rates, domestic violence upticks, reckless driving chaos and lingering impacts from the pandemic.

However, as outlined in his speech to the common coun cil, one of those issues makes it hard to tackle the others –revenue constraints.

Mayor Johnson proposed a $1.7-billion budget to the council Tuesday, including several cuts amid what he called constrained, or ham strung revenue.

Johnson said the property tax levy cannot be signifi cantly raised, and Milwaukee cannot collect hotel, income or sales taxes for the budget. So to bring in additional rev enue he proposed a 2 percent tax levy increase.

He said with that levy a typical homeowner will pay an additional 2.1 percent in property taxes and about 4 percent more in fees.

Johnson also proposed a 2 percent pay raise for general city workers, and 3 percent if they’ve worked there for more than 5 years. “I value their work and we must treat them respectfully,” the May or said.

The Mayor's proposal would reduce the number of sworn Milwaukee Police De

partment officers by 1 per cent. He anticipates the city will receive a federal grant this year. However if that doesn’t happen, then officers will be reduced by 2 percent.

One percent fewer officers equates to 17 officers.

Mayor Johnson hopes this happens by attrition and re tirements.

Johnson said he would add more officers if the city's fi nances were better.

Although he plans to re duce the officers, he request ed $20-million more for the police department for the 2023 budget compared to 2022.

The proposal requests $300,860,638 for the Mil waukee Police Department.

In 2022 former Mayor Tom Barrett allocated more than $280-million to the Milwaukee Police Depart ment. That was a budget cut from the $295-million in 2021.

It also eliminates up to two fire engines by July 2023.

The proposal includes a $100-million payment to the pension system. It’s $30-mil

lion more than last year’s re quirement. Johnson said the pensions are largely driven by police officers and fire fighters, and believes the city isn’t in position to ask them to trim the bill.

Johnson said he’s speaking with state senate and assem bly leaders about shared rev enue and other options to help constraints.

When WISN 12 News asked how those discussions were going the Mayor said he's hopeful to make-up some ground once they're back in session for the 2023 year.

Some organizations believe the police department's bud get is too much.

The African American Roundtable group hosted a rally outside of City Hall following the proposal to dis cuss why they believe police funding should go toward community programs for public health and affordable, quality housing.

The organization is also pushing for participatory budgeting to decide where money will go.

The proposal will now go to the common council for changes, and eventually a vote.

“With the passing of this legislation, the city will cel ebrate a significant moment in history for many thou sands of our fellow citizens and neighbors, and having city workers be able to fully celebrate the day as a holiday is tremendously positive,” Al derwoman Coggs said.

The Finance and Person nel Committee recommend ed the file for approval at its September 14 meeting. Several cities throughout the U.S. have also recognized

Juneteenth as an official city holiday, and that list includes New York, Los Angeles, and Phoenix.

File #220475 was co-spon sored by Alderwoman Mari na Dimitrijevic, Alderwom an Nikiya Dodd, Alderman Russell W. Stamper, II, Al derman Khalif J. Rainey, Al derman José G. Pérez, Alder woman JoCasta Zamarripa, and Alderman Michael J. Murphy.

Years ago as a journalist in training, one of my pro fessors described journalism and news as “the first draft of history.”

Historic events surely have played a major role in life as we know it during Septem ber 2022. As society pre pared to commemorate past milestones, time marched on and added other unplanned events to the docket.

The U.S. Open tennis tournament held annually in Flushing, Queens, NY, is a major sports highlight each September. This year it ushered in the retirement at age 41 of phenom Serena Williams. Since 1995 , when she and her sister Venus burst onto the pro tennis circuit from the public tennis courts of Compton, CA, her fierce and focused playing style coupled with incomparable skills dominated the court and broadened the appeal of tennis to a wider audience, particularly in communities of color.

In men’s tennis, Frances Tiafor competed in the U.S.

Open and became the first African American male to advance to the quarter finals since the late Arthur Ashe captured the men’s singles ti tle in 1968.

For the past 21 years, the world has reflected on the events of the morning of Sep tember 11, 2001. That day, terrorists commandeered and weaponized airplanes and crashed them into the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon out side Washington, DC, kill ing thousands of civilians.

The term “9-11” has become associated with the concept of blind hatred and interna tional terrorism, similar to how July 4 brings to mind freedom, independence and

self-determination It will never be just another date on the calendar.

September 8, 2022 set off 11 days of mourning and remembrance in Great Brit ain and shared by the world, with the announcement of the passing of Queen Eliza beth II at age 96. Her 70year reign made her the lon gest serving monarch in her country’s history and one of the longest reigning mon archs in world history. Her lifetime encompassed events from the Great Depression, World War II and Beatle mania, to the racial integra tion of her own family with the marriage of her grand son Prince Harry to Meghan Markle, an American woman

of color. Through it all, the Queen’s demeanor provided a constancy that the world probably will not see again anytime soon

In entertainment, one of Broadway’s original "Dream Girls," Sheryl Lee Ralph, won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a comedy series for her role as kindergarten teacher Barbara Howard in Abbott Elementary. This is the first win in this catego ry by an African American since Jackee Harry won back in 1995 for playing “Sandra Clark” on 227

Quinta Brunson, the cre ator, writer, producer and star of Abbott Elementary,

won the Emmy for that series in the Outstanding Comedy Writing category, the first African American woman to win that award as a solo hon oree.

These news events allow us as a human race to view the past and look forward toward the future – if not with a set plan, then with some sense of perspective. Turning his tory’s pages, we are reminded of how far we have come as a people, but more so, how far we still must go to achieve a more perfect, equitable state of being and opportunity for all.

Focus on Health

Dear Editor,

We do not ask for help. We do not tell anyone when we struggle. Too often, we refuse to share our pain, struggle, or sorrow until we simply can not hold it in anymore.

That is, it seems, what it means to be a black person in America. Too often, we are afraid to be perceived as weak, incapable, or unable to make do. And to our credit, just as often, we do make a way. But right now, that way may not be available. Now is the time to do things a little differently.

With food and other prices rising at a rate our country has not seen since the 1970s, it is getting more difficult to “make a way.” In Milwaukee, hunger is a major issue. Ac cording to the U.S. Census Bureau, in 2021, the City of Milwaukee had a poverty rate of 24.6 percent, ranking

it one of the top 50 U.S. cit ies with people living below the poverty line. According ly, about 1 in 10 seniors are food insecure or going hun gry. These seniors do not have access to sufficient food,

or access to food of adequate quality, to meet their basic needs. Similarly, and unfor tunately, 1 in 4 children are also enduring hunger and insecurity. It is not just our elders and our babies strug gling; we are all feeling it.

There is help available. One program that can help us subsidize our food bud get and reduce food inse curity in our community is the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), or FoodShare, as we call it, in Wisconsin. With the Pan demic Public Health Emer gency still in effect, eligible individuals could receive up to an extra $250 per month to buy food. This is a sig nificant increase from the $20 per month seniors were receiving pre-pandemic. A family of four could add an

Food is a Human Right. Rights.

extra $835 a month to their budget. With FoodShare, you are eligible for other sup port, including discounts on cell phone service, internet access, and you could even get help to buy a computer or tablet. Your children also become categorically eligible for free breakfast and lunch at school.

The pandemic era boosts to FoodShare, and other programs have helped many in our community bridge the gap between providing adequate healthy meals ver sus skipping meals to main tain their household budget. With FoodShare set to scale back in the new year, the time is now to get the support that you are entitled to and en sure you and your family do not continue to struggle to “make a way.”

Food is a human right, but too many in my community are struggling to buy food

‘Unforgettable’ recalls life, career of music icon Nat ‘King’ Cole

Between 1940 and the mid-1960’s. there were few recording artists – black or white – who enjoyed a worldwide fan base. There were even fewer who were recognizable simply by the sound of their voice or were on a first-name-only basis with the public.

Nat “King” Cole was all of that.

The life, career and music of this versatile entertainment icon are brought to life in Unforgettable: JohnMark McGaha Sings Nat King Cole, now running at the Milwaukee Repertory Theater’s Stackner Cabaret through Sunday, November 6, 2022.

Born Nathaniel Adams Coles on March 17, 1919 in Birmingham, AL, Nat moved with his parents and four siblings to Chicago’s Bronzeville neighborhood when he was four years old.

His father was a Baptist minister and his mother, a church organist, taught Nat to play piano and organ. In addition, Nat became active in music at his high school, as well as in a neighborhood youth band sponsored by the black-owned Chicago Daily Defender newspaper.

When his older brother

Eddie landed a spot in the band that was touring with the revue Shuffle Along, 15-year-old Nat decided to drop out of high school. Eddie formed a jazz combo called The Swingsters and Nat joined his brother on the road playing in nightclubs. When their tour concluded its run in Los Angeles in

1940, Nat decided to stay on the West Coast. The Swingsters soon evolved into The Nat ‘King’ Cole Trio, with a drummer and stand-up bass player joining Nat featured on piano. The nickname ‘King’ was inspired by the nursery rhyme, Old King Cole; and stemmed from a trend among African American jazz musicians of the era who adopted ‘regal’ stage names, including William James ‘Count’ Basie and Edward Kennedy ‘Duke’ Ellington.

Nat also found a day job making commercials as a studio musician, and then recording vocals. One night while performing in a club, an “over served” patron harassed Nat into singing the song, Sweet Lorraine, which was popular at the time. The King Cole Trio eventually recorded the song, featuring Nat’s mellow jazz vocals and it became their first number one hit.

Nat soon signed an exclusive recording contract with Capitol Records and eventually became its top artist in terms of sales and popularity. He also

continued to perform on other labels using fake names. In 1946, he launched a 15-minute radio program, King Cole Trio Time, the first ever sponsored by a black musician. His musical style transitioned from pure jazz and improvisation to more pop music and love ballads featuring Nat’s distinctive style. His vocals often were backed by flowing string arrangements from conductor Nelson Riddle. In 1950 and 1951, Nat was named the top recording artist with the song of the year two years in a row.

Nat expanded his repertoire to weekly television in 1956 with The Nat King Cole Show on NBC. It was the first national TV variety program hosted by an African American. He also appeared in film roles, including as W.C. Handy in St. Louis Blues and as the singing storyteller in Cat Ballou

Despite his enormous success in entertainment, Nat King Cole was no stranger to the scourge of racism that pervaded life in the United States. In 1948, he and his wife bought a home in

the all-white Los Angeles neighborhood of Hancock Park. Local bigots burned a cross on his lawn and killed his dog with poisoned meat. His top-rated television show was canceled in 1957 after just one season due to failure to attract national sponsors. He was once physically attacked on stage during a performance in his hometown of Birmingham, AL.

He even suffered backlash from the African American community during the civil rights-sensitive 1960’s for continuing to perform for white-only and segregated audiences. He countered this criticism by becoming a life member of the NAACP and being among the principle planners of the epic 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.

When Nat King Cole passed away on February 15, 1965 from complications from advanced lung cancer, his death and funeral were covered by print and broadcast media worldwide. Among his pallbearers and mourners were Senator Robert Kennedy, California

Governor Pat Brown, and entertainers Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Jr., Count Basie, George Burns and Danny Thomas.

The virtuoso performance of actor, singer, storyteller and musician John-Mark McGaha brings the essence of Nat King Cole to the stage front and center. McGaha offers his own distinctive, silky vocals, punctuated with instrumental accompaniment on guitar and piano. He gets solid assistance from his on-stage combo comprised of musical director/pianist Chuck Larkin; drummer Ryan Bennett; bass player Jeff Hamann; and flute/sax player Jesse Montijo.

For those who remember Nat, this two-hour performance of more than a dozen songs will bring back warm memories of a music giant who a reporter once referred to as “the best thing that ever happened to a song.” For those who are too young to remember, this performance will introduce you to the class, dignity, passion and purity that was Nat King Cole. “Unforgettable” only begins to describe this performance and the man who inspired it.

Tickets for both matinee and evening performances of Unforgettable: JohnMark McGaha Sings Nat King Cole are available by contacting The Milwaukee Repertory Theater box office, 108 East Wells Street, Milwaukee, WI 53202, 414/224-9490; or for more details, visit the website www.MilwaukeeRep.com.

Though the box office slump continues, it looks like the worst is over. The week end’s $48.5-million overall box office is the fourth worst of the year, but it's around a 13 percent increase from last weekend’s $42.3-million, which was the year’s second worst weekend and may turn out to be the season’s weak est. This weekend is the first in September to perform bet ter than the same weekend last year, which had a Mar vel Comics Universe title at the head of the month with little else to follow, and the buzz on Don't Worry Dar ling suggests that next week end should see more growth. Of course, these low overall numbers are still bleak (keep in mind no pre-pandem ic weekend dropped below $60-million since 2001), and the numbers will remain ugly until Halloween Ends opens in four weekends from now, but after seven of the past ten weekends declining, any im

West Africa set historical epic opened in first place with an above-expectations $19-mil lion. More important than the overperforming opening, though, is its A+ CinemaS core, making The Woman

King just the second film of the year to receive the top grade from audiences (the other was Top Gun: Mav erick, and we all know how that went). We can expect strong legs from here (more

than four times the opening is common for the rare film that receives the A+), and suddenly the $50-million budget on the film (which was co-financed with eOne) looks much more recoup able.

Critics agree with audienc es that The Woman King is a winner (it’s at 94 percent on Rotten Tomatoes), and its status may get a further boost when awards season comes around. The film opened in 3,765 theaters, and audienc es felt this was one to see on the biggest screen around as 34 percent of its gross came from IMAX and other pre mium large format (PLF) screens. We’ll have to wait to find out how it performs internationally, but so far it’s off to a strong start.

provement is a decent sign. If there’s one title to cele brate this past month, it’s So ny’s The Woman King. The Viola Davis-starring, Gina Prince-Bythewood-directed,
