Stamper, II, representatives from the Milwaukee Police Department and MKE Plays volunteers during a special playground build event. The build took place in the 3100 block of W. Boy, 12, boy killed in Harambee neighborhood house fire Rohlfing said the most important way to prevent fatal house fires is to have working smoke detectors installed and a detailed escape plan already in place. “Practice the escape plan so that your children know that if the smoke alarm goes off they know what to do,”

Rohlfing said, adding an escape plan should include practical advice, like stay close to the floor, feel the escape door before opening it to determine if it is hot, and if the main escape route is blocked by fire, knowing the alternate escape route.

Standing in front of a Milwaukee residence where a 12-year-old male perished during a house fire on September 24, 2018, Milwaukee Fire Chief Mark Rohlfing urges Milwaukee residents to make sure to have working smoke detectors installed and an escape plan in place and rehearsed in the event of a house fire. A 12-year-old male child died in a house fire at 2509B N. 5th Street on September 24, 2018. Six adult occupants and four children were able to escape, but the victim was trapped on the upper floor of the 1½ story residence until rescued after an aggressive search; but unfortunately, by the time he was found, he had already succumbed to the high heat and fire. In the aftermath of the fatal house fire, Milwaukee

Fire Department Chief Mark Rohlfing and Assistant Chief Brian Smith held a press conference on September 25, 2018 emphasizing the importance of having working smoke detectors and an escape plan ready. “We don’t need these fire deaths,” Rohlfing said. “We know that smoke alarms can provide early warning of a fire. We know that if there is a good escape plan, that if we work with our chil-

dren, if we have a designated meeting place outside, if we talk about fire safety that we can prevent most of our fire deaths in Milwaukee.” After the press conference, other Milwaukee Fire Department officials canvassed the neighborhood informing residents that the Milwaukee Fire Department maintains a smoke alarm hotline 414286-8980 and will come and install free of charge smoke detectors in residents' homes.

Northwestern Mutual is dedicated to enhancing its headquarters in Milwaukee by providing its residents with access to quality health, educational and community resources. To further its commitment, the company, through its Foundation, announced on Wednesday, September 26, 2018, nearly $3.4 million in grants to nonprofits and organizations. The organizations receiving funding are committed to propelling Milwaukee toward a better future through community outreach and educational improvement. Since 2013, the company has invested in and partnered with the Milwaukee neighborhoods of Amani, Met-

calfe Park and Muskego Way to increase safety and build strong families and healthy and thriving youth. Many of the organizations receiving funding through this year’s neighborhoods grants, including Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee, Journey House, Junior Achievement of Wisconsin and more, share a mission to help local youth reach their goals. “For our city to thrive, it’s so vital to provide the opportunities for our children and youth to be successful,” said Eric Christophersen, president, Northwestern Mutual Foundation. “It’s essential that we help support our (Continued on pg. 18)

Colin Kaepernick pushes Nike’s market value up $6 billion, to an all-time high Nike’s market value has risen by $6 billion since its controversial decision to feature former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick in its new ad campaign, CBS News reports. Shares are up more than 36 percent for the year, nearly 5 percent just since the ad’s launch. Kaepernick is known for being the first NFL player to take a knee during the national anthem back in 2016, kicking off a movement against racial inequality that’s faced criticism from all walks of life, including the president. Embracing the controversy, Nike made Kaepernick the face of its campaign celebrating the 30th anniversary of its “Just Do It” slogan.

Angry critics almost immediately began cutting up their Nike socks and burning their Nike sneakers. The sportswear giant’s stocks took a 3 percent dip early on, a $4 billion loss. But after a bumpy start, Nike’s campaign has certainly paid off: in mid-September, its stock hit a record high, with products selling out more frequently. Longterm investors are seeing the benefits of having Kaepernick on board. Nike is, after all, the world’s 18th most valuable brand according to Interbrand, and the Kaepernick controversy created free press. “I don’t think they just ran- ad out, thinking, ‘Let’s com- ket strategist at B. House passes Rep. Moore’s bill to designate Vel R. Phillips post office building On Thursday, September 13, 2018, Congresswoman Gwen Moore’s (WI-04) bill to designate the facility of the US Post Office located at 2650 North Doctor Martin Luther King Drive in Milwaukee as the “Vel R. Phillips Post Office Building” passed the US House of Representatives. Congresswomen Moore delivered the following remarks on the House floor in support of her bill:

the House is going to take up and, hopefully, pass legislation that I've introduced to honor a Wisconsin hero and one of my sheros Vel. R. Phillips. The bill would designate a post office in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in her honor.

UPS hiring more than 500 for holiday season in greater Milwaukee area On September 24, 2018, UPS® announced that it expects to hire more than 500 seasonal employees in the Greater Milwaukee area to support the anticipated increase in package volume that will begin in November and continue through January 2019. Nationally, UPS expects to hire about 100,000 seasonal employees. “Every year, we deliver the holidays for millions of customers,” said Jim Barber, chief operating officer. “In order to make that happen, we also deliver thousands of great seasonal jobs at our facilities across the country.” The full- and part-time seasonal positions – primarily package handlers, drivers and driver-helpers – have long been an entry point for permanent employment at UPS. Many senior UPS executives, including Chief Executive Officer David Abney and other members of the company’s senior leadership team, started their UPS careers as part-time employees. Tractor-trailer and package car driver jobs start at $18.75 per hour. Pay for package handlers start at $10.35 per hour and $15.00 for driver-helpers. www.milwaukeetimesnews.com

Permanent UPS jobs – including part-time jobs -- come with great pay and benefits, including healthcare and retirement benefits. At many UPS® locations, parttime employees in college are eligible to receive up to $25,000 in tuition assistance through the company’s Earn and Learn program. Kevin Whitehill of Des Moines, Iowa was a college student when he started a seasonal job as a part-time package handler on his 19th birthday – Nov. 19, 1996. He worked part-time for several years and took advantage of UPS’s tuition reimbursement program to get his degree. Twenty-two years later, he’s an on-road supervisor managing tractor-trailer drivers. “I never intended UPS to

be a career,” he said. “I took a job for Christmas. As I moved along, the opportunities were just too good to pass up.” UPS is hiring at the following three local locations. • Oak Creek – 6800 S 6th St, Oak Creek, WI 53154 • Elm Grove – 12400 W Bluemound Rd, Elm Grove, WI 53122 • Sturtevant – 10204 Hwy 11, Sturtevant, WI 53177 Interested job seekers can easily apply for holiday season opportunities by visiting UPSjobs.com. The Counseling Corner

By Rev. Judith T. Lester, B.Min. M.Th

Fall is Here! #ANewSeason: Self-Care (Conclusion) “To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven.” - (Eccl. 3:1) Camille B. Lester is this week’s featured guest columnist. She wears many hats; she is a board-certified counselor/therapist, doctoral student, educator, and the esteemed daughter of Rev. Judith T. Lester. Her research and clinical interests broadly focus on understanding the factors that contribute to the etiology, clinical course, and progression of internalizing and externalizing behaviors in African American youth, with a particular emphasis on the role of socialization, parenting techniques, and subsequent social cognition. Enjoy this week’s feature on self-care by Ms. Lester. Over the past few years the term “self-care” has transformed into a movement. On the cover of every magazine, news article, and selfie one can find posts with the buzz word #SelfCare. Each day people from around the world take the time to share their own personal interpre-

tation of self-care, but what does it really mean? The first step to getting real about self-care, is to tune into self. Similar to how we tirelessly turn the dial on our radio until the sound is just right, we must do the same to tune into our body, mind, and Holy Spirit. To tune into self, you must first acknowledge your existence. Touch your hand, place your hand to your heart, or close your eyes and breathe deeply. You are here. You exist. You are breathing. When we internalize the reality that we are the perfect result of God’s unique workmanship, love, imagination, and amazing creativity, caring for self becomes less arduous. As Christians, it is ingrained in us to be loving, giving, forgiving, kind, and gentle to others. We are called to extend God’s grace daily, as God has so graciously extended to us, no matter the difficulty. I always ask myself,

if I am as giving, forgiving, kind, and gentle to myself, as I strive to be for others. When I think about the discrepancy of grace sometimes I lend to myself versus the grace I extend out, it causes me to pause because during those times I find myself in the “negative,” lacking energy to take care of self the way I need and deserve. In many ways, self- care is intentionally living out 1 Corinthians 13. It is being loving, kind, patient, and forgiving to ourselves. Leading a "1 Corinthians 13 life" opens us up to experience God’s unbelievable grace in the simplest, daily, routine aspects of existence. I acknowledge the reality that the pulls and tugs of capitalism and the ‘live and show your best life’ attitude of social media is everywhere. It is important to note that taking care of self does not have to include weekend trips to expensive spas, overpriced fa-

cials, or lavish vacations. Selfcare knows no race, budget, or socioeconomic status. It is instead found in the most ordinary, mundane acts, and might I add, often times for free?! Self-care is getting out of bed or taking time to rest. It can also be saying “no” and creating and enforcing personal boundaries with family and friends. It could be saying “yes,” and letting someone into your boundaries. Self-care can be taking the stairs at work, taking your medication, drinking water, creating a to-do list, eating lunch outside, lighting a candle, cooking, eating a warm meal, or pausing to admire the squirrel chase up the tree. Self-care is taking time to tune into self, and do what your body, mind, and spirit needs in any given moment. Ephesians 6:11, pleads for us to “put on the FULL armor of God, so that [we] can take a stand against the dev-

il’s schemes, for our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against spiritual forces of evil in heavenly places.” Beloved, take care of you. Show up fully. Give and receive grace freely. You are the result of God’s workmanship, love, and creativity. You exist. You matter. Pause. Breathe. You are here. God is not done with you yet! - Camille B. You can vote today in Milwaukee

By U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin On Monday, September 24, 2018—the first day of early voting in Milwaukee—I was joined by Lieutenant Governor candidate Mandela Barnes, Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett and Alderman Cavalier Johnson to celebrate the first votes cast in the city for this election. That’s right. There might be weeks until election day, but you can actually cast your vote today in Milwaukee. Early voting is taking place right now at three locations across the city: • Zeidler Municipal Building, 841 N. Broadway • Midtown Center, 5700 W. Capitol Dr. (located west of Pick ‘n Save) • Mitchell Street Library, 906 W. Historic Mitchell St. Each location is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. And on Monday, October 15, even more early voting locations will open at the Zablocki Library on Oklahoma Ave., the Center Street Library on Fond du Lac Ave., the Mill Road Library on 76th St., the UWM Peck School of the Arts-Helene Zelazo Center on Kenwood Blvd. and at

And the most powerful way to do that is to exercise the right that generations of Americans have fought and bled for—the fundamental right to vote. So today, I urge you to cast your ballots and vote early in Milwaukee. Bring your photo ID, and your friends and family. Health care is on the ballot. A stronger Milwaukee is on the ballot. COMMUNITY COLUMN UW-Milwaukee excited to welcome two satellite campuses By Mark A. Mone Chancellor, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee While many consider New Year’s Day to be the time to make life changes, fall at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee is all about new beginnings. There is a great deal of excitement and a certain amount of nervousness that students of all ages experience when heading back to school. And this fall, we welcome more than 2,000 additional students who join us from the University of Wisconsin’s two-year colleges in Waukesha and Washington County. This summer, UW-Waukesha and UW-Washington County became satellite campuses of UW-Milwaukee. This is the result of the UW System’s consolidation of its 13 two-year campuses with Wisconsin’s seven fouryear universities. You will be seeing new signs and logos and hearing the new names – UW-Milwaukee at Waukesha, and UW-Milwaukee at Washington County. The restructuring increases opportunities and makes education after high school

Courtesy of UWM

Chancellor Mark Mone shares how a restructured UWM, now with campuses in Waukesha and Washington County, will benefit southeastern Wisconsin. even more accessible to people in southeastern Wisconsin. For our restructured UWM, a top priority is student success, which includes providing numerous pathways, programs and offerings to strengthen the pipeline from high schools, technical schools and two-year

colleges. For example, those attending two-year satellite campuses can seamlessly transfer to UWM and other UW four-year campuses. UWM offers students a wealth of opportunities through 192 degree programs. That includes more than 850 online courses and 30 fully online degree and

certificate programs. For 80 percent of our graduates, their time at UWM includes an internship, co-op or other work experience. Also, being located in a vibrant region like southeastern Wisconsin means that more than 1,400 companies recruit UWM students each year.

Together, we can address the talent needs in Waukesha and Washington County – and the entire region – by bridging the needs of students and employers in manufacturing, health care, information technology, business and other fields. Our goals are to increase the number of students who earn degrees, to build on the 184,000-plus living UWM alumni who make significant contributions to Wisconsin, and to improve the quality of life and earnings of our graduates. For the long term, we see the addition of satellite campuses as a positive change to make education more accessible to those in our region. These campuses are a valuable launchpad and expand opportunities for thousands of students. We are excited for the opportunities that lie ahead for the restructured UW-Milwaukee and are proud to welcome all our students to the new year. If you are interested in becoming a student at any of our campuses, I invite you to learn more by visiting uwm.edu/admission.

Students at Bradley Tech High School in Milwaukee learned on Tuesday, September 18, 2018, about the dangers of smart-phone activities while driving when the new AT&T It Can Wait virtual reality experience visited the school. Bradley Tech High School teamed up with AT&T, AAA and the Wisconsin State Patrol as part of the It Can Wait® campaign to remind students that smartphone activity should wait until after driving. Teens were also encouraged to sign a pledge to keep their eyes on the road and not on their phones. “In today’s world, the smartphone can be a big distraction for students behind the wheel,” said Percy Eddie, Assistant Principal at Bradley Tech. “But students need to understand that just one look at their phones while driving can change their lives in an instant. We are happy to host the AT&T It Can Wait experience and urge teens to focus on driving instead of their phones.” As part of the It Can Wait experience, students came face-to-face with the very real

dangers of distracted driving and interacted with a memorial wall, a wall of keys representing lives lost, and a wall made to look like crushed car parts. They also had the chance to view two new films produced by AT&T that share the stories of teenage boys killed by smartphone distracted driving (Caleb’s story and Forrest’s story), as well as an age progression video that imagines what their lives would have been like if they hadn’t been killed. “The message of our It Can Wait campaign is simple – distracted driving is never okay,” said Scott T. VanderSanden, president of AT&T Wisconsin. “One glance at your phone while driving can change everything and even cost you your life. We are urging all drivers, especially our teens, to keep their eyes on the road and not on their phones.” The AT&T It Can Wait virtual reality experience is visiting Milwaukee as part of the company’s nationwide

tour to raise awareness about the dangers of distracted driving. Other Wisconsin stops included La Crosse and Madison. New research from AT&T shows 81 percent of people admit to texting behind the wheel, while 64 percent admit to snapping and viewing photos while driving. Other smartphone activities people say they do while driving include: playing music (64 percent); emailing (60 percent); accessing social media (50 percent); surfing the net (47 percent); watching or streaming videos (36 percent); and even video chatting (27 percent). Nearly 4 in 10 people call distracted driving a habit. And nearly a quarter of people don’t see it as a major

problem. However, research also shows taking action and speaking up can help reduce distracted driving. Seven in 10 drivers who have pledged at www. ItCanWait.com are keeping their commitment to not use their smartphones while driving. And 57 percent of people are more likely to stop driving distracted if a friend or passenger pressures them to. “One of our primary missions of Milwaukee Public Schools is to keep our students safe, and that includes safe driver’s education,” said Dr. Keith P. Posley, Interim Superintendent of Milwaukee Public Schools. “Through efforts such as the It Can Wait campaign, we can help teach our kids from the beginning of their driving careers that distracted driving and smartphone use behind the wheel is dangerous and potentially deadly.” Wisconsin banned texting while driving over seven years ago on December 1, 2010.

“Taking your eyes off the road, even for a few moments, can have tragic consequences,” said Wisconsin State Patrol Superintendent J.D. Lind. “To ensure the safety of all travelers, we need drivers to stay focused on the road ahead, slow down, and make sure everyone in their vehicle is buckled up.” AT&T’s It Can Wait campaign began in 2010 with a focus on texting while driving, but has now expanded to include the broader dangers of using a smartphone behind the wheel. The effort has turned into a national social movement with support from organizations all over the country, including the Wisconsin State Patrol and AAA. Since 2010, AT&T, AAA and the Wisconsin State Patrol have partnered together to hold events in 142 cities throughout Wisconsin, reaching over 54,000 high school students. Nationally, over 29 million people have taken the pledge to not drive distracted by their phone since 2010. Transitioning your workout from outdoor to indoor

There are so many apps, YouTube channels, and cable subscriptions that you can join to get your workouts in without having to program them yourself. You can think of it like you would attending group fitness classes at any gym or studio, but within the comfort of your own home, without having to worry about anyone invading your personal space, and without having to encounter B.O. Nike, Insanity, RunKeeper, Aaptiv, Victorious, and Daily Burn are all apps that you could look into! 3. Join a small group or organize your own small

You’re going to want to create a schedule and plan for yourself once the temperature drops. Building a schedule actually helps you stick with a routine. Write it down in your calendar and make the commitment. Everyone is motivated differently, but music will forever be a driving force! Building a playlist that is true to you takes time, but it is oh so rewarding and will make your indoor workouts much more exciting. If you don’t have any idea of where to start, there are some amazing genre-specific (and not-so-specific) playlists across all listening platforms (Tidal, Apple Music, Spotify, SoundCloud) that you can actually tailor to your liking. It may take some searching and listening, but you can always find a playlist that makes you want to move. As mentioned earlier, you still have the option of being outdoors during the colder months, but it’s just important to have the right gear. Jackets, hats, ear muffs, fleece-lined leggings, and gloves are some pieces you’ll want to invest in if you plan on getting your miles in without having to use a treadmill. Nike sells some great athletic apparel for all seasons, so give them a try!

Well, that was fun. Summer is fleeting and the temperature is dropping. This means that you’re either prepping your cold weather gear for outdoor workouts or trying to figure out how to bring those workouts indoors. The best thing about warm weather is having a number of workout options, but when living in cities that are subjected to brutally cold temperatures, it’s important to have a plan. This doesn’t mean joining a traditional gym or investing in expensive workout equipment. It just means it’s time for you to get creative. 1. Join a boutique studio or health club subscription service. If you’re not interested in joining a traditional gym, but you also dread the idea of an at-home workout, it may be time to look into joining a boutique studio or a gym that is centered on a specific discipline like boxing, indoor cycling, barre, yoga, or even rock climbing. Relatives, friends can provide care to Family Care members through self-directed supports program When Josephine Ivy has her hair brushed by her inhome personal care worker, it’s done with love. That’s because Ivy’s caregiver is her daughter, Unity Brown, who is a paid caregiver for her mother 22 hours a week. She does this through a Family Care program known as SelfDirected Supports, in which Family Care members can get the care they need from the people they’re most comfortable with. “It’s a blessing,” Brown said of being paid for some of the hours she cares for her mother, who is a member of My Choice Family Care. About the program The self-direction program offers a lot of options for members, says Jane Westpfahl, a Self-Directed Supports Specialist with My Choice. Through the program, a member can choose who provides care or services to them. That’s why it’s called “self-directed.” “It’s a more creative way to provide services,” Westpfahl said. Members can have a

Unity Brown and Josephine Ivy relative, friend or neighbor paid to provide care or services if they feel more comfortable working with someone they know, rather than with a staff person from an agency, Westpfahl said. Family members also appreciate that their relative is getting care from someone who loves them and knows their needs. “There’s a sense of relief and satisfaction,” Brown said, because she’s familiar with her mother’s specific medications and can easily keep her safely on schedule. If a caregiver needs training

to provide the services, that training is provided to them free of charge. Whether or not the caregiver requires training is determined on an individual basis. The key is making sure the member is safe, Westpfahl said. My Choice Family Care works with several agencies who provide the training, collect the time sheets and send the paychecks to caregivers. These agencies handle all the paperwork and also provide respite workers as needed. Respite workers are available if a caregiver needs a break or wants to go

away on vacation. Meanwhile, Ivy enjoys having her daughter help with cooking, cleaning, bathing, laundry and errands. “We spend more time together, and we talk a lot,” she said. Before Brown took over her mother’s care, her older sister, Shalonda Buchanan, worked with Ivy as a personal care worker. “I was happy they’d be my caregivers,” Ivy said. “I’m a little spoiled. It feels good,” she said, smiling. Caring for Josephine is a family affair: her son, Tommy Ivy, lives with her, and helps out as well. Ivy said without the care from her family, she probably wouldn’t be able to live as independently and stay as healthy. “I do what the doctor tells me to do every day, and she makes sure I do it, too,” she said, pointing to Unity. “Our goal is to try to keep a person as independent as possible, and the goal for many people we serve is for them to stay in their home as long as possible,” Westpfahl said.

A helping hand “The program is awesome. It’s an opportunity to help a loved one regain their health, dignity and selfesteem,” Brown said. “It’s nice to know you’re helping someone get back into daily living.” Both mother and daughter say the self-direction program that allows a loved one to care for their parent is extremely helpful. “I really recommend it,” Brown said. “It gives you a good sense of loving and compassion to know you’re there for the person who loves you, and you love them.” For more information about long term care options in Milwaukee County please call the Milwaukee County Aging Resource Center at (414) 289-6874 (for those age 60 and over) or the Milwaukee County Disability Resource Center at (414) 289-6660 (for those age 18 and over with disabilities). Eight downsizing tips before you move into a senior living community You’ve evaluated living options and found the ideal place to live out the next chapter of your life. Now what to do with all that stuff that’s accumulated over the years? Here are eight downsizing tips to help you downsize before your move.

1. Make a plan Downsizing is a process that involves different days of high productivity, with some space to reflect in between. When you see a move on the horizon, get out the calendar and set dates for those productive days. De-

fine goals for each day, write down who will need to be involved to reach those goals, and get those friends and relatives involved early on so they can be ready to help when those days come. 2. Make a list, before you start going through things

PAUSE THE MEMORIES

REWIND THE HAPPINESS

Involve a loved one if you think it will help, but it’s OK to sit down by yourself and write down the possessions that you would like to bring to your new home. While it’s not easy, it can be most helpful to write your list without walking around your house and pulling things out. If you can’t think of them now, you won’t miss them when they’re gone. 3. Start with the unsentimental stuff Sometimes, even parting with an extra cheese grater can be difficult. But if you start with the kitchen and the garage, you might be surprised how ready you are to tackle the living room and bedroom! 4. Visit your new home frequently before the move-in If you’re moving into a senior living community, spend some time with loved ones in your new apartment or cottage home and visualize your favorite possessions around you. Where will you put them? What won’t be necessary anymore? Then, when you return to your house, it will be easier to visualize where each item will or won’t fit in your new home as you’re organizing. 5. Be able to articulate each item’s purpose Alternatively, take the advice of Marie Kondo, author

of The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing, who advises you to pick up each item and ask yourself, “Does this spark joy”? If it doesn’t, set it aside. 6. Don’t dispose of things immediately You don’t need to throw away your old things just yet. Set them aside, preferably out of sight, and see how you get along without them. You could be surprised at how little you notice they’re gone — and how much you enjoy living with less stuff. 7. Don’t throw things away if you can help it Rather than chucking your old possessions in the garbage, where it will eventually end up in a landfill, you can find a new owner for many of your things. It’s not as difficult to part with familiar items when you know someone else will be enjoying them. And if you can’t give it away, try to recycle! 8. Have fun! Downsizing is a chance to celebrate the items that really matter to you, while saying goodbye to those that have run their course. Involve your friends, family and loved ones as much as you can, and pour a glass of wine if it suits you. Cheers to this next step in your life!

The hands-on, incentive-based program offers the opportunity for young men to learn fundamental social and employment skills, understand the value of self-sufficiency and explore entrepreneurial opportunities in Milwaukee through internships and employment. Those individuals who successfully complete the program obtain jobs throughout the city in various sectors, including law, nonprofit, environmental organizations and more. Last year, Operation WORK partnered with the City of Milwaukee to clean and further develop Pocket Parks, mini-parks that promote wellness through outdoor activities, including two in Amani and one in Metcalfe Park. In the Milwaukee education system, Northwestern Mutual focuses on funding literacy programs that emphasize third-grade reading proficiency and best-in-class mentoring programs, partnering with six schools located in the Amani, Metcalfe Park and Muskego Way areas.
