Juneteenth Day official city holiday; Mayor Johnson signs ordinance

Milwaukee always goes big for Juneteenth with parades and a street festival, but now, June 19 is an official city hol iday.

Mayor Cavalier Johnson signed an ordinance Monday, Sept. 26, 2022 to make it of ficial, joining with the feder al government and about half the states in formally mark ing June 19 as a holiday hon oring of the end of slavery in the United States.

Under this ordinance, city offices will be closed each year on June 19, and employ ees will receive a paid day off.

"Recognition of June 19 is important," said Mayor Johnson. "It's a celebration. It also ends a horrific chapter in American history."

Juneteenth marks the day enslaved black people in Tex as learned they were finally free in 1865, two years after the Emancipation Proclama tion.

"Slavery and its impacts have had a devastating effect on African Americans and on our society for generations," said Mayor Johnson.

Milwaukee's Common Council unanimously ap proved the legislation. Alder woman Milele Coggs was a driving force behind it.

"My sincere hope is, be yond June 19, people reflect from this history, learn from this history, and I'm thankful

we, as a city, will recognize Juneteenth in a greater way," said Coggs.

This now holiday is part of the fabric of Milwaukee,

which has one of the oldest and largest Juneteenth cele brations.

"It's a beautiful moment in time," said Clayborn Benson

Milwaukee renames street in honor of Olympic sprinter and Marquette grad Ralph Metcalfe

The name Ralph Metcal fe can evoke many images. A record-breaking Olym pic sprinter. A trailblazing United States congressman. A hardworking graduate of Marquette University.

But for New Yorker Nasser Metcalfe, he will always just see his loving grandfather.

“This beautiful communi ty carries the name Metcal fe,” said Metcalfe’s grandson, who shared some words on behalf of his family during an event showcasing the lat est effort by the city of Mil waukee to honor Metcalfe's legacy.

“I declare today that we are all Metcalfes — every last one of us — and that his name and his work and his legacy and all that it means

will continue within all of us and our future generations,” he added as he held Ralph Metcalfe’s watch and spoke to a crowd of residents.

The ceremony held in Mil waukee's Metcalfe Rising Park at 3401 W. Center St.

on Saturday, September 24, 2022, unveiled the renaming of part of the roughly fourmile stretch of North 34th Street — a main street dis continuously threading from Metcalfe Park near West Meinecke Avenue toward

Glendale. The honorary street name will be applied to the signs lining 34th Street from West North Avenue to West Center Street.

This is not the first time the city has celebrated Metcalfe, who also has a west side park,

of the Wisconsin Black His torical Society.

Cities across the country, the federal government and at least 24 states have made Juneteenth an official holi day.

"All of this is good, and it's beginning to happen now with this new resurgence of identity towards Juneteenth Day," said Benson.

With this recognition, starting in 2023, city offices will close on June 19.

"Juneteenth is a time for all people, all people to cel ebrate," said Mayor Johnson.

school and neighborhood named after him.

The event drew residents, both young and old, to his namesake park, where orga nizers also distributed com munity resources on voting and housing.

“I'm blessed to be on the block that I grew up on and to see the name change,” said Melody McCurtis, depu ty director of Metcalfe Park Community Bridges, which hosted the ceremony.

“We are going to celebrate this historic moment and we are going to keep going,” she added. “It's almost like Ralph Metcalfe has passed the torch to our community.”

On Sunday, September 18, 2022, the Greater Milwaukee Ur ban League (GMUL) Guild hosted their 3rd Annual Art Show at Greenwood Gallery and Framing, 4233 W. Fond du Lac Av enue, which is owned by Guild member Fredrick Robinson, Jr. The event was free to the public; guests were asked to bring school supplies to help assist students at the schools that the Greater Milwaukee Urban partners with. The event featured artist Willie Weaver-Bey and Toni Williams along with jewelry maker Melissa Blue Muhammad. There was also a raffle for pieces of art which was won by Maurice Wince (inset) owner of Sherman Park Grocery Store, 4215 W. Being Frank

African Americans have put up with more in the USA than any race of people in the history of the world. African Americans are the only race of people who have had a government spend trillions of dollars to destroy them for more than 200 years. Afri can Americans need to take time and celebrate the simple fact that they still exist.

“It's a celebration to last throughout the year.” That line comes from Celebration, by Kool and The Gang. Af rican Americans are still in a 2022 USA war zone, but for the next hour or so relax and celebrate existence. African Americans, think about how your people have overcome deadly plans like COINTEL PRO and are still walking the face of the planet. Do not let other races bring you down either. No other people could survive the emotional torture African Americans have gone through in the

USA. Celebrate.

African Americans can still produce children even after programs like Planned Par enthood were geared to re duce their numbers. Healthy African American children are still being born in every state of the Union. The US government has tried to re tard and sabotage African American reproduction via birth control for decades. Even with this attempt, healthy African American

children are still being born. Celebrate.

African Americans, hold your heads up high even though there are some Af rican people who come to the US and look down upon you. Don’t fret that there are some African-born people residing in the USA that try to exploit African Americans like whites do. If it had not been for the sacrifices of Afri can Americans, these African

people would not be in the USA. Do not knock these African people for their igno rance. Embrace the fact that once these African people are called the N-word by whites they will wake up. These Af rican-born people will then realize how much African Americans have overcome.

African American females, celebrate the fact that you are still the prize in the USA. The conquest of the African American people has always been through the African American female. For cen turies the white power struc ture has tried to brainwash African American females into loving white males. In 2022 the majority of African American females still choose African American males as mates. The white based fash ion industry has attempted for decades to make African American females hate their natural beauty. Yet, in 2022 the number of African Amer ican females who are into the natural look is on the rise.

African American males, the simple fact that you are even on the planet is a mir acle. Nothing on the planet Earth has been hunted like the African American male. African American males are still here after the: drugs, effeminate clothing, and the lunatic music that is de signed to drive them insane. The prisons and grave yards are full of African American males who are victims of the white push to eradicate them. Yet, go into any town, city or village and you will see an Af rican American male walking or driving down the street.

White men still envy African American male physique and confidence. Maybe this is why white males have done so much to erase African American male existence.

The simple fact that Afri can Americans are among the wealthiest black people on the planet is astound ing. African Americans are in a system designed to keep them impoverished. African Americans were forced to give up everything and adopt the ways of people who hat ed them. Yet, African Amer icans still prospered in some form or fashion in the USA. Other people of color look down on African Americans. None of these races have played in the arena African Americans have, and still are. The daily racism that African Americans don’t even notice would drive these people of color to suicide.

Celebrate African Amer icans. Celebrate your exis tence. Celebrate your great ness. Celebrate the fact that you have lived in the belly of the beast and are still here. African Americans are not only on the planet, but will one day rule it.

Pregnancy complications rising in black women, 5 ways to lower your odds

There are glaring dispar ities when it comes to the pregnancy complications black women are at risk for and those numbers are only rising. According to the Blue Cross Blue Shield Associa tion’s Racial and Ethnic Dis parities in Maternal Health report:

• Women of color are more likely to have a higher risk of pregnancy-related complications regardless of having commercial health insurance or Med icaid.

• Pregnancy and childbirth complications increased for all women by nearly 10 percent since 2018, with a marked increase during the pandemic.

• While rates of unexpect ed outcomes from labor and delivery for all wom en rise with age, black women ages 35-44 have a 66 percent higher risk of experiencing serious complications compared to white women.

Scarce maternity care

According to the March of Dimes, about 7 million women ages 15 to 44 can not obtain maternity care in their area or have dangerous ly scarce options. Of these 7 million women, more than 1 in 3 are women of color. “We know that in 54 percent of all the counties in the country, there is little to no access to obstetric care,” Stacey Stew art, president and CEO of the March of Dimes, shared.

Many women feel this ne glect. In a survey conducted by the Harris Poll in part nership with HealthDay, 76 percent of women strong ly or somewhat agreed that there’s not enough focus on

health care for mothers after pregnancy and birth, and 71 percent strongly or some what agreed that it feels like mothers are forgotten once the baby is born.

Other contributing factors include gaps in insurance coverage that leave mothers without prenatal or postpar tum care and high rates of preexisting conditions. Of fering women options to pre vent unwanted pregnancies is associated with lower ma ternal mortality rates, adding to concerns that Roe v. Wade could have deadly impli cations for mothers. States with restrictive abortion laws already tend to have higher maternal mortality rates.

All of these forces dispro portionately affect women of color, but black mothers face additional, more sys temic threats. “Eighty per cent of our health is really determined by how we live, whether or not we have ac cess to safe, decent housing, good nutrition, access to good care and all of those things,” Stewart added.

Dr. Chereena Walker, 33, a hospitalist in Kansas City, MO, and mother of two, has experienced what too many women of color can relate to: Despite her position as a trained physician, she strug gled to have her voice heard by her own doctors as she experienced complications throughout each of her preg nancies.

Walker has a history of asthma, which can up the risk of complications during pregnancy. Like many other preexisting conditions linked to high-risk pregnancies, asthma strikes black women at significantly higher rates

than white women.

During Walker’s first preg nancy, an asthma flare-up at 25 weeks landed her in the hospital, where she was intu bated for three days to regain control of her breathing. She found herself in the intensive care unit again during her second pregnancy after de veloping a respiratory virus and severely low oxygen lev els. At that time, the doctors also discovered a small hole in her heart, called a patent foramen ovale, or PFO.

While she carried both pregnancies to term and brought two healthy babies into the world, Walker and her husband were fearful of trying for a third.

Many other black mothers have stories like Walker’s, in cluding Serena Williams, one of the most influential wom en in the world. After deliv ering her baby via C-section, Williams had a pulmonary embolism, a blood clot that travels to the lungs. In a 2018 interview with Vogue, she re counted having to advocate for her needs explicitly when a nurse attributed her symp toms to confusion induced by pain medication.

“Implicit bias stands in the way of far too many wom en, especially women of col or, not receiving the proper treatment, and then that leading to some sort of poor maternal health outcome or even birth outcome,” Stewart shared.

Preventing pregnancy com plications

In addition to advocating for yourself at the doctor’s office, there are some steps you can take to avoid having a problematic pregnancy:

• Attend appointments reg ularly. Going to all of the routine OB-GYN visits throughout the entirety of your pregnancy will allow your physician to monitor and keep track of your ba by’s heartbeat, growth and overall health – as well as your overall health. What's more, regularly seeing a high-risk pregnancy spe cialist will increase the like lihood that a medical con dition or issue is detected sooner rather than later.

• Make your health a priori ty. Despite being pregnant, you should still make your self a priority – primarily, your health. Extreme fa tigue, high levels of stress and a poor diet are all con tributing factors of serious pregnancy complications. Make sure you are getting the recommended amount of sleep (usually 7 to 8 hours a night), sticking to a healthy diet and exercise regimen and taking the time out of your day to reduce stress levels. Here’s a tip: a brief meditation practice or a brisk walk in the fresh air can help.

• Quit smoking and drink ing. Remember, whatev er you consume, the baby does also. Preterm birth is a serious complication and direct side effect of smok ing and drinking while pregnant, and it is strongly recommended that a wom an quits as soon as she is trying to conceive and/or

when she finds out that she is pregnant.

• Avoid harmful foods. Did you know that not con suming harmful food that could hurt your baby is actually one of the most preventable measures a pregnant woman can take? Foods that contain certain bacteria, like listeria, sal monella and toxoplasmo sis should be avoided. You should also avoid unpas teurized milk and cheese, cook meat thoroughly be fore you consume it (no rare or medium rare steak or burgers), skip out on soft-boiled or raw eggs and avoid any undercooked poultry. In addition, be sure to wash and cook veg etables thoroughly as well.

• Maintain a healthy weight. Your weight is a make-orbreak factor when it comes to pregnancy complication prevention. Over eating, eating too many sugary foods, acquiring diabe tes and being overweight in general are all possible triggers of preeclampsia, a condition marked by high blood pressure that can di rectly affect a baby’s ability to receive blood and ox ygen while in the womb. This also puts you at risk for gestational diabetes. On the flip side, being too thin and not eating enough can also be damaging. You can avoid preeclampsia, gesta tional diabetes and other complications by main taining a healthy weight throughout your pregnan cy. Remember to exercise regularly at your doctor’s discretion, and consume a healthy diet.

Wills stole 104 bases in 1962, smashing Ty Cobb’s record of 96 set in 1915. Wills that year was named Most Valuable Player of the National League and the AllStar Game, in which he would appear in five seasons. He led the league in stolen bases in

six consecutive seasons, won two Gold Gloves at shortstop and still holds the club record with 490 stolen bases, even though he retired in 1972.

Maurice Morning Wills entered the Dodgers organization at a time when eventual Hall of Famer Pee Wee Reese had a stranglehold on the shortstop position. It took 8 1/2 Minor League seasons before Wills eventually wrested the starting shortstop job from Don Zimmer and, despite his slow start, he went on to play 14 Major League seasons, 11-plus with the Dodgers. He had a .281 career batting average and finished with 586 stolen bases. He played on three World Series championship clubs. He also managed parts of two seasons

in Seattle.

"As a kid, my greatest wish was to play in the big leagues," Wills told MLB. com in 2004. "When I was 14, I heard about Jackie Robinson and I wanted to play for the Dodgers. I spent 8 1/2 years in the Minors, and it appeared it would not happen. I wanted to play with Jackie Robinson and didn't get to do that, but I did play for the Dodgers.”

Wills also served several stints as an instructor in the organization, but one goal was never realized. He never made it to the Hall of Fame, falling short in votes by the Baseball Writers' Association of America (peaking at 40.6 percent in 1981, with 75 percent needed for election), (Continued on pg. 11)

Pair makes unlikely transplant match

At some point in the day, everyone is a pedestrian. Unfortunately, pedestrian injuries and fatalities remain high. In 2020, 6,516 pedes trians were killed, and an estimated 55,000 pedestri ans were injured nationwide, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Ad ministration.

Gina Micheli and Ira Had not needed each other and might not have met except Ira wanted a kidney and Gina wanted to be a donor. The two women were connected when a co-worker and poten tial donor was found to be an incompatible match.

When Micheli, facilities manager at The Wisconsin Humane Society, learned of Ira’s plight from Kelvin Had not, she volunteered her kid ney. The waiting will end Oc tober 6, 2022 with transplant surgery at Aurora St. Luke’s Hospital.

“Gina’s generous gift will greatly improve the quality and length of my life,” said Hadnot, a retired journalist. “I was becoming discour aged with the waiting and the multiple medical proce dures,” said Hadnot. She was on a waiting list for seven years after being diagnosed with end stage renal dis ease and undergoing dialysis while living and working in

as well as the Veterans Committee and Golden Days Era ballot.

"Every player hopes to manage, and I got to do that,” Wills said. “The last and ultimate would be to make the Hall of Fame. I thought of that during my playing days and used that to keep me motivated and improve to make me better."

Wills stole 50 bases in his first full season, 1960, beginning a run of six straight seasons in which he led the NL. He was the first NL player to steal 50 bases since Pittsburgh's Max Carey (51) in 1923.

In 1961, Wills made his first All-Star Game appearance and won his first Gold Glove Award. He had the best season of his career in 1962, winning the NL

Dallas, TX.

Six years ago, she and her husband Darrell Alexander decided to return home be cause “I knew I would need a lot more support. My young est sister had all kinds of complications with the dis ease before she died in 2017.”

Obtaining a donor is dif ficult because the demand is greater than the supply of available kidneys, said Had not, adding she had become “an armchair expert.” Other factors include race, age, in come and the way kidneys are distributed.

“Multiple studies have shown a racial disparity in kidney transplantation,” said Hadnot who is African American. “Blacks have a higher rate of kidney failure but a lower rate of deceased or living donor transplant surgeries than whites. Even when you take education, in come, family medical histo ry and age into account, the disparity does not disappear.”

MVP Award in a narrow race over Willie Mays. That season, Wills took home another Gold Glove Award while hitting .299, and his 104 stolen bases were more than any other Major League team's total.

Wills played in his first World Series in the Dodgers' win over the White Sox in 1959, and he and the Dodgers went to the World Series three more times during his tenure with Los Angeles. The Dodgers swept the Yankees in 1963, bested the Twins in seven games in '65 and were swept by the Orioles in '66. Wills excelled in the '65 World Series, hitting .367 with three doubles, three RBIs and three stolen bases.

"He just loved the game of baseball," Roberts said. "He loved working and loved the relationship with players. We spent a lot of time together. He really kind of showed me to appreciate my craft and

Hadnot said: “Kidneys are colorblind. We need donors of all races to be as selfless and caring for other human beings as Gina Micheli. I am so grateful. Not only do I get the gift of life but a new best friend who inspires me to find ways to help others.” Micheli became motivated to become a kidney donor in 2004 while watching a rerun of a “Law & Order” episode.

Timing was never quite right for Micheli to donate because of her own financial situations, work life and oth er issues. It wasn’t until she and Kelvin Hadnot started working together that she learned of his sister Ira’s di alysis.

“Just about a year ago when Ira suffered a major complication, I was finally in a position to take that step to become a living donor.

“Thankfully, we were a match,” added Hadnot.

In an effort to reduce these numbers and kickoff the start of Pedestrian Safety Month in October, AARP Wisconsin is bringing Jonathon Stalls –founder of Walk2Connect (https://www.walk2connect. com/) and Pedestrian Dig nity (https://www.intrinsic paths.com/pedestrian-digni ty) and author of the newly released “WALK: Slow Down, Wake Up, and Connect at 1-3 Miles per Hour” to Milwau kee for two free events that are open to the public on Oct. 5 and 6.

A “Community Glow Stick Walk” will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 5, from 6 to 7:30 p.m., at Hoyt Park, 1800 N. Swan Boulevard (Picnic Area #1), Wauwa tosa. Join AARP Wisconsin and Stalls for a walking and rolling event within the Hoyt Park area.

Please wear comfortable shoes as this will primarily be a walking event. The event is free and open to all ages, but participants are asked to reg ister in advance here: https:// events.aarp.org/WiGlow Stick

Then on Thursday, Oct. 6, from 10 to 11:30 a.m., AARP and Stalls will hold another event called “The Amani Pedestrian Dignity Experience” at the Domini can Center, 2470 W. Locust St, Milwaukee (meet at this location). This will be a walk ing and rolling event within the Amani neighborhood. To register for this free event, visit: https://events.aarp.org/ pedestriandignity.

According to Stalls, Pedes trian Dignity events center on the lived experience of all who walk, use a wheel chair and take transit as their primary form of transporta tion. “We will move with the many gaps and opportunities facing all who walk, roll and use the bus in car-dominated built environments,” he said.

Participants are invited to connect to one another around pedestrian behav ior related to practical trips (origins/destinations) and co-create solutions and next steps around what can be done to protect, honor and care for today's pedestrian.

what it is to be a big leaguer. I think a lot of where I get my excitement, my passion, my love for players -- it's from him."

After the 1966 season, Wills' final All-Star campaign, he was dealt to the Pirates in exchange for Bob Bailey and Gene Michael. Wills spent two seasons with Pittsburgh before he was selected 21st overall by the Expos in the 1968-69 expansion draft. Montreal traded him back to the Dodgers midway through the '69 season, along with Manny Mota, and he

In his 1991 autobiography, “On the Run,” Wills credited then-instructor Al Campanis with teaching him how to steal bases and Triple-A manager Bobby Bragan with encouraging him to steal and try switchhitting. The book not only recounted Wills' career highs, but also his personal lows, including alcoholism and drug addiction. Wills credited former Dodgers executives Fred Claire and Don Newcombe with an intervention in 1988 that led to treatment and a path toward recovery.

Wills was brought back into the Dodgers organization as an instructor by then-manager Jim Tracy in 2001 and had a role in every Spring Training since,

tutoring bunting at what was called “Maury's Pit.” Roberts credits Wills for teaching him the techniques that resulted in Roberts' dramatic and historic stolen base in the 2004 ALCS that helped propel the Red Sox to the World Series.

"He said, 'DR, one of these days you're going to have to steal an important base when everyone in the ballpark knows you're gonna steal, but you've got to steal that base and you can't be afraid to steal that base,'" Roberts recounted. "So, just kind of trotting out on to the field that night, I was thinking about him. So he was on one side telling me, 'This is your opportunity.' And the other side of my brain is saying, 'You're going to get thrown out; don't get thrown out.' Fortunately, Maury's voice won out in my head."
