'The Brides of Christ' host an evening of faith and devotion at Bethel

Photos by Robert Bell

On Friday, December 11, 2015, Bethel Baptist Church, 2030 West North Avenue, hosted an awesome evening of women preaching. Inspired and given by God, The Brides of Christ event created by Reverend Patsy McNeely of Bethel Baptist Church. The theme for the event was “You Better Be Ready.” Each female preacher( from 10 sur-

rounding churches), including Rev McNeely, dressed as brides carrying a small candle of light and strolled down Bethel’s red carpet into the church sanctuary, which was beautifully decorated in red and white. The church was filled to its downstairs capacity as the guests patiently waited for the procession of the “Brides of Christ” to

begin. Deacon Curtis Robinson eloquently welcomed the guests who waited with anticipation for the procession of the brides. Ms. Glennis Pickett stood in for Reverend McNeely as Mistress of Ceremonies. The Bethel Baptist Choir belted out two numbers with Ms. Minnie Waits performing “Sweet Jesus.” When the moment had

come for the procession of the brides, the lights went out in the church and laser lights began to flash. The onlookers gazed as 10 beautifully clad female preachers dressed as brides marched out carrying a small lit candles, singing “This Little Light of Mine.” Under a beautifully decorated arch, each woman

for 5-7 minute expounded on the Word of God taken from Matthew 25: 1-13. The women each spoke on being ready for the return of Christ, and letting your light shine so that others might see. Reverend McNeely closed the event out as the final speaker. She concluded that (Continued on pg. 8)

‘Unforgettable’ singer Natalie Cole dead at 65 Grammy-winning singer Natalie Cole, whose biggest hit came in a virtual duet with her late father, pop legend Nat King Cole, of his decades-old hit “Unforgettable,” has died at the age of 65, her family said. The family’s statement said Cole died on Thursday night December 31, 2015 at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles from “ongoing health issues.” Cole’s career spanned five decades in the R&B, soul, jazz and pop genres. In 2015, she had canceled appearances citing medical reasons. “It is with heavy hearts that we bring to you all the news of our Mother and sister’s passing,” the Cole family statement said. “Natalie fought a fierce, courageous battle, dying how she lived - with dignity, strength and honor. Our beloved Mother and sister will be greatly missed and remain UNFORGETTABLE in our hearts forever.” The statement was signed by Cole’s only child, Robert Yancey, and her twin sisters, Timolin and Casey Cole. Tributes quickly poured in for Cole, with singer Tony Bennett saying on Instagram he was “deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Natalie Cole, as I have cherished the long friendship I had with her, her father Nat, and

the family over the years.” Bennett added: “Natalie was an exceptional jazz singer and it was an honor to have recorded and performed with her on several occasions.” “Unforgettable” comeback Cole broke out in 1975 with the hit “This Will Be,” which won the Grammy for best R&B female performance and also earned her the Grammy for best new artist. Critics compared her to Diana Ross and Aretha Franklin but her career floundered in the 1980s when she ran into problems with heroin. She bounced back, and her career reached the superstar level in 1991 when she

recorded “Unforgettable ... With Love.” The album contained songs associated with her father, the silky-voiced baritone who was one of the most popular performers of the 1940s and ‘50s but died before his daughter began her solo career. Using technology that was cutting edge at the time, studio engineers merged her voice with her father’s in the song “Unforgettable,” which had been a hit for Nat King Cole in 1951. The result was a moving, sentimental No. 1 hit 40 years later, that actually sounded as if the two were singing a duet. The song and the album it came from earned Cole three Grammy Awards. “I thank my dad for leaving

me such a wonderful, wonderful heritage,” Cole said in accepting her awards. Cole’s other hits included “Everlasting,” “Sophisticated Lady,” “I’ve Got Love on My Mind,” and “Good to Be Back.” In all, she won nine Grammys. The success of “Unforgettable” capped her comeback after a dark period of heroin, crack and alcohol abuse. In “Angel on My Shoulder,” her 2000 memoir, Cole said she turned to drugs because of unresolved issues in her life, including being molested as a child and her father’s death when she was 15. She spent six months in a rehabilitation program at the Hazelden Clinic in Minnesota and told CBS in 2006 that “those people gave me my life back one day at a time.” Cole was diagnosed with hepatitis in 2008 from sharing needles with drug addicts, and underwent kidney transplant surgery in 2009. This past autumn, she canceled several concerts scheduled for November and December, citing a recent medical procedure. Her 2008 album of pop standards, “Still Unforgettable,” included another duet with her father, “Walkin’ My Baby Back Home.” Her most recent work was 2013’s “Natalie Cole en Espanol.” Cole was only 11 when

she first sang professionally, with her father. But she went to the University of Massachusetts in Amherst with no plans of an entertainment career. While in college, she performed with bands and set aside plans for being a child psychologist. Cole’s mother, Maria Cole, also had been a singer with the Duke Ellington and Count Basie bands. Cole portrayed herself in “Livin’ for Love: The Natalie Cole Story,” a 2000 television movie that depicted her drug addiction. She was married three times. “We’ve lost a wonderful, highly cherished artist and our heartfelt condolences go out to Natalie’s family, friends, her many collaborators, as well as to all who have been entertained by her exceptional talent,” Neil Portnow, president of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. Singer Patti LaBelle tweeted, “Sending prayers and condolences to all the loved ones of my friend #NatalieCole! She will be truly missed but her light will shine forever!” Singer Lenny Kravitz posted on Instagram: “As the new year was ushered in, an angelic instrument moved on. Natalie Cole’s voice was perfection. And what a lady... You will be missed my dear.

An emotional President Obama calls for 'sense of urgency' to fight gun violence President Barack Obama grew emotional Tuesday, January 5, 2016 as he made a passionate call for a national "sense of urgency" to limit gun violence. He was introduced by Mark Barden, whose son Daniel was killed in the 2012 massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut. Obama circled back to that shooting in the final moments of his speech. "Every time I think about those kids, it gets me mad," Obama said, pausing to wipe away tears. He added: "And by the way, it happens on the streets of Chicago every day," referring to his adopted hometown where he began his political career. The White House is seeking to expand background checks for buyers. The measure clarifies that individuals "in the business of selling firearms" register as licensed gun dealers, effectively narrowing the so-called "gun show loophole," which exempts most small sellers from keeping formal sales records. Former Congresswoman and gun control advocate Gabby Giffords, who was seriously injured in a 2011 mass shooting, was also in attendance at Tuesday's

Obama hammered congressional Republicans for opposing measures like expanded background checks as he called on Americans to punish them at the polls. He defended his actions to strengthen background checks for purchasing guns, answering critics who say the measure would not make it harder for criminals to obtain firearms. "Each time this comes up, we are fed the excuse that common-sense reforms like background checks might not have stopped the last massacre, or the one be-

fore that, or the one before that, so why bother trying," Obama said. "I reject that thinking." "We know we can't stop every act of violence, every act of evil in the world. But maybe we could try to stop one act of evil, one act of violence," he added. The President blasted the gun lobby, particularly the National Rifle Association, and insisted that his actions are "not a plot to take away everybody's guns." He compared his push for gun control to steps the United States and businesses have taken to limit traffic fatalities, require fingerprints (Continued on pg. 14)

The Counseling Corner By Rev. Judith T. Lester, B.Min. M.Th

Living a life that matters: Faith as a source of courage (Week 1) Happy New Year! Last month while sitting in a crowded coffee shop in Tennessee, this writer was approached by an elderly gentleman who asked to join me at my table. I obliged him. One never knows when an angel has been sent by God. The Scripture reminds the believer to never neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have entertained angels without knowing it. (Hebrews 13:2). The elderly gentleman immediately engaged this writer in conversation. He said: “Did you know that as believers our lives really do matter?” That simple statement began a conversation with that elderly gentleman that lasted for over an hour, interrupted only by the need to rush to my next seminar. The conversation with this gentleman inspired the subject matter for this month’s articles. As we ring in the New Year, join me as we look at how to live a life that matters.

In an article written posthumously, Michael Hyatt reflected on the life lived by Maya Angelou, concluding Ms. Angelou’s life was one of true significance. The author surmised there were five lessons from Ms. Angelou’s life’s story that resonated for living a life of lasting significance. For these next several weeks, this writer will share these lessons. Lesson #1: Look to your faith as a source of courage A foundation of faith can give us the confidence we need to act boldly. When interviewed regarding her faith, Maya Angelou said, “When

I understood that, when I comprehended that…when I internalized that, I became courageous. I dared to do anything that was a good thing.” Believers know Hebrews 11:1, “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen;” but do believers really look to their faith as a source of courage, confidence and hope? Do we really have a firm expectation that God will perform all God has promised to us in the Christ? Faith takes courage as faith believes what it does not see. True faith grasps firmly upon the word and promises

of God and the true believer, knowing the power and faithfulness of God; is firmly persuaded that there shall be a performance of what is said by God with respect to the matter or circumstance. Resolve to look to your faith as a source of courage and know that whatever God has told His people of, or has promised to them, God will not forsake or leave His people; but rather God will guide and protect them, supplying their needs and will give His people grace in the here and now and in the glory after (Gill’s). Beloved, be inspired by the words of the Apostle Paul: “So keep up your courage, men, for I believe God and have complete confidence in Him that it will turn out exactly as I have been told…” - Acts 27:25. Next week: Continuation The writer does not assume responsibility in any way for readers’ efforts to apply or utilize information or recommendations made in this article, as they may not be necessarily appropriate for every

Bible Scripture for the week from The Book of Psalms

A psalm of David. Who may worship in your sanctuary, Lord? Who may enter your presence on your holy hill? Those who lead blameless lives and do what is right, speaking the truth from sincere hearts. Those who refuse to gossip or harm their neighbors or speak evil of their friends. Those who despise flagrant sinners, and honor the faithful followers of the Lord, and keep their promises even when it hurts. Those who lend money without charging interest, and who cannot be bribed to lie about the innocent. Such people will stand firm forever. - Psalm 15 Holy Bible, New Living Translation

'The Brides of Christ' host an evening of faith and devotion at Bethel (Continued from pg. 1) while we are waiting for Christ (the bridegroom) to return, God intends for those who are not married to wait for their physical bridegroom or bride as well. She stated that Christians today are not abstaining from sex and need to be reminded that fornication is still a sin. In addition to the event the Pastor, William E. Robbins and children delivered a song, “None But the Righteous.” This was certainly a first and a treat indeed!! A mime dance performance by ‘the Chosen One,' the anointed Mr. Willie Webb, was an atmosphere changer. The event ended with refreshments being served in the Leonard McDonald Christian Educational Building. There were small ham biscuits, chicken salad wraps, potato salad, veggie trays, and a dessert tables filled with cakes, pies, and punch. The program was video-taped by Dana T. Johnson of Laser Express Expeditors LLC, who can be contacted at 262-661-6577. DVDs of the “Brides of Christ” will be available by calling the church at 414342-6474, or by contacting Reverend McNeely at 414366-0426. Rev. McNeely hopes to have the event televised on one of the local cable stations later this year.

MCW Posts Results of Research Study Involving Transfusions in Trauma Patients, Civilian trauma study supports use of battlefield blood transfusion protocol

The Medical College of Wisconsin Department of Surgery, Division of Trauma and Critical Care took part in a national, multi-center study to compare how severely injured patients are given blood transfusions necessary to save their lives. The study took place at Froedtert & the Medical College from January to December 2013. It was designed to compare the effectiveness of different blood product ratios (Platelets, Plasma, and Red Blood Cells). Locally, 42 patients were enrolled in the study (which enrolled a total of 680 patients.) The results were published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in an article titled “Transfusion of Plasma, Platelets, and Red Blood Cells in a 1:1:1 ratio vs a 1:1:2 Ratio and Mortality in Patients With Severe Trauma: The PROPPR Randomized Clinical Trial.” In summary, it was found that there was reduced risk of death due to blood loss during the first 24 hours when a ratio using more platelets and plasma was used. This group was given more units of plasma and platelets than the other group, but their bleeding was better controlled and there was no difference in death or other complications between the two groups. “We could not have completed this study without the support of the local community. This is an extremely important study as it incorporates the lessons physicians have learned from recent overseas conflicts,” stated Medical College surgeon, Dr. David Milia. Drs. Karen Brasel and Milia were the siteinvestigators for the Medical College of Wisconsin along with research coordinator, Pamela Walsh. Participating centers, in addition to the Medical College of Wisconsin, included UTHealth/Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center, the University of Alabama, the University of Arizona, the University of California, Los Angeles, the University of California, San Francisco, the University of Maryland School of Medicine, the University of Cincinnati, Oregon Health and Science University, the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, the University of Washington/Harborview Medical Center, and Sunnybrook Health Science Center in Toronto. PROPPR is a protocol of the Resuscitation Outcomes Consortium, which is funded by the NHLBI, the U.S. Department of Defense, the Defense Research and Development Canada, and the Canadian Institute of Health Research of Circulatory and Respiratory Health. Community Column University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee graduates have impact By Mark A. Mone Chancellor, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Happy New Year! It’s also graduation season and a time to celebrate our students – and future students – at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM). UWM is the ONLY public urban research university in the state and it is absolutely vital to Milwaukee, the region and well beyond. The access and engagement we provide is something you will not find anywhere else in Wisconsin. It transforms the lives of thousands of our students, their families, and the communities in which they live.

This December more than 2,300 individuals received a degree from UWM and are now beginning new chapters in their lives, whether working in the Milwaukee area, doing research in other countries, or continuing on to graduate school. Along the way, the lives of these individuals changed dramatically. Here are just a few of their remarkable stories: While a student at UWM, Gladys Gonzalez worked on a business plan that is being implemented in the Living Kidney Donor Transplant Program at Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center. Gladys is receiving a bachelor’s degree in Healthcare Administration. She had an internship at Aurora St. Luke’s while a

Igoni Igoni is an immigrant from Africa, the ninth of 10 children in his family, and the first male to graduate from college. As a father with two young children of his own, he worked 60-75 hours a week driving a cab to support his family and education. Igoni wants to make a difference in how students are educated in Wisconsin and around the globe. He is receiving a bachelor’s degree in Community Engagement and Education. world became much, much larger when she began studies at UWM. Renée is receiving a bachelor’s degree in Astrophysics. She will continue her studies and do research on pulsars as a graduate student. These individuals are doing things they never dreamed possible. As college graduates, they are prepared for life’s opportunities and challenges. That is the power of a college education. Options. Possibilities. Lifelong learning and personal growth. I hope you will come and visit us, either at our campus or online at www.uwm.edu. Find out more about how your future can be reimagined.

Enthusiasm to lend a helping hand shines through Emerson volunteer Sharon Hester

Sharon Hester volunteers three days a week at Ralph Waldo Emerson School. Sharon Hester enjoys making someone’s day brighter. Achieving that goal typically comes through the smallest tasks, including helping a child open a milk carton at lunchtime or working with students on a class assignment. Whatever the job may be, Hester will help wherever she can. “I just know this is where I am supposed to be,” said Hester, who is in her second year volunteering at Ralph Waldo Emerson School. She also volunteered at Milwaukee French Immersion School for a short time. Assisting those in need is in Hester’s nature. In 2012, Hester returned to her native Milwaukee from California to help her sister care fulltime for their ailing mother. When her mother passed away earlier this year, Hes-

ter was encouraged by her sister, Carol McKay, principal at Bethune Academy, to volunteer more time to MPS. Hester, who served in the U.S. Marine Corps and is retired from the California Department of Corrections, spends three days a week at Emerson doing everything from answering phones in the school office to helping out in classrooms and lunchroom monitoring. The pace can be hectic at times, but Hester is up for any task. “I like to keep busy,” she said. Hester says her family is supportive of her volunteering role in MPS. “After my mother passed away, volunteering helped me to work through the loss. I love being here and working with the kids,” she said.

January is “National Glaucoma Awareness Month”

Are you at risk for a leading cause of blindness in African Americans? Medical treatment Glaucoma can’t be cured, but treatment can usually halt further damage and vision loss. The most common type is a lifelong condition that requires continual management with prescription eye drops to lower pressure (by either decreasing fluid production or increasing outflow).

By Cheryl L. Dejewski Glaucoma is known as the “Sneak Thief of Sight” because the most common type is painless and progresses so slowly that most people don’t notice symptoms for years—until severe permanent damage has already occurred. Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness in the U.S., especially for African Americans. In fact, black Americans have a 6-8 times higher risk of developing glaucoma than whites, and a recent study found that one in five black Americans age 75 and older has glaucoma.

When undetected and untreated, glaucoma can cause a gradual “tunneling” of vision that progresses unnoticed until permanent sight loss occurs.

Dangers of having glaucoma Glaucoma-related “tunneling” (loss) of side vision makes it difficult to safely navigate stairs, stay in the proper driving lane, detect obstacles, etc. Glaucoma has been shown to increase the risk of having a car accident by up to six times and triples the risk of falling.

Laser treatment “In some cases, when drops alone cannot control pressure, side effects are intolerable, or multiple drops are required, laser treatment may be an alternative. SLT (which increases fluid drainage) and ECP (which decreases fluid production) procedures take less than 10 minutes to perform and are covered by Medicare and most insurance plans,” explains Daniel Paskowitz, MD, PhD, an ophthalmologist with credentials from Harvard and Johns Hopkins. Benefits of laser treatment “Laser procedures are highly successful at controlling glaucoma and reducing the need for drops or surgery. This is especially important for people who already have other conditions requiring daily medication(s) that they have to worry about buying, taking and tracking,” says eye care specialist Michael Raciti, MD. Detection + treatment = vision protection “Glaucoma-related sight loss is often preventable with prompt diagnosis and care. But all of our expertise, equipment and treatments are of no use if patients don’t come in for checkups,” says David Scheidt, OD, past president of the Milwaukee Optometric Society. “Prompt diagnosis and treatment are vital to protecting and preserving vision.” More information Encourage your siblings and other family members to be checked for glaucoma, especially if one of you has the disease. If any of you do not have an eye care specialist, you can call 414-321-7035 for a free educational booklet and information about scheduling a comprehensive screening (usually covered by insurance or Medicare) at their offices on 7th & Wisconsin Avenue, Mayfair Road across from the mall, or 102nd & National Avenue. Rebuilding Our Community

Milwaukee Times Weekly Newspaper

By Dr. Andrew Calhoun, Ed.D. Special to the Milwaukee Times

Looking ahead It’s a new day, a new me, getting it together and the best is yet to come are just a few of the ideas that are floating out there these days as this New Year begins. It is perhaps fitting to read off some of the items on your “New Year Resolution list” including losing some weight, eating healthier, reading a few good books, taking that needed vacation, going back to school, getting back in church, looking for a new job...well you get the picture. But perhaps it is also a time to take an inventory of what you went through on last year and make some serious changes or do some house cleaning. In my view, if you did not like what you got last year, then you must do something different this year to experience a better outcome. If not, then what happened to you last year will just repeat itself, and the same results will occur. You know, it is always fun to dream and write up those resolutions each year; but taking the action necessary to make the change is where the problem lies. For many of us “Change is Hard.” And as we look forward to this New Year, a lot has to change if we expect more and are looking for living a better quality of life for ourselves and our families. At the heart of this change

Word of the Week

we seek is to first envision what we desire that can become possible. As Stephen Covey, the author of the “Seven Habits of Highly Successful People,” states that we must “begin with the end in mind.”

This should be our starting point to see the possible and work towards making it happen. This will require us to change our habits, set some goals, set some boundaries and even to realign some of

our relationships. This is not easy, but it is possible. We must keep in mind that real change will not happen until we make a change with how we see things and interact with various situations. We also must remember that we all have a choice in what we hear, say, and accept. We all have a choice when voting, when voicing our concerns on matters that affect us and we all have the choice to get involved in making our community better. And if you are looking at what I am seeing... this year will be interesting ... but what do you see?

Sixty 12 Salon & Spa holds its 2nd annual 'Girls Night Out' event By Jarreau Sims, Special to the Milwaukee Times On October 14, 2015, the "2nd Annual Girls Night Out," a program that educates women of color about breast cancer was held at Sixty 12 Salon & Spa. More than 40 women attended the event, which was designed to provide informative literature and demonstrations on how to do self-examinations and detect possible breast cancer. Myia Mitchell and Cynthia Hines, the owners of Sixty 12 Salon & Spa, thought that it was important to host this event at their business and are determined to help resolve the disparity in breast health education in urban communities. The Girls Night Out program is provided by Partners in Pursuit of the Promise, a collaboration of organizations and businesses determined to increase awareness and preventive measures in understanding breast health. The keynote speaker was Paulette Christian, owner and CEO of P. Christian and Associates. This year the women of Sigma Gamma Rho sorority also participated in the event, assisting the women with education and awareness. National statistics have shown that 1 out

(Continued from pg. 2) to unlock iPads and keep children from opening bottles of aspirin. "I believe in the Second Amendment, there written on paper, that guarantees the right to bear arms," Obama said. "No matter how many times people try to twist my words around, I taught constitutional law. I know a little bit about this. But I also believe that we can find ways to reduce gun violence consistent with the Second Amendment." Obama said Congress, which blocked a tougher gun bill in 2013, still needs to impose new gun control measures. He noted that many of the actions he's calling for can only be imposed through legislative action. "Congress still needs to act," Obama said. "The folks in this room will not rest until Congress does. Because once Congress gets on board with common-sense gun safety measures, we can reduce gun violence a whole lot. "But we also can't wait," Obama added. "Until we have the Congress that's in line with the majority of Americans, there are actions within my legal authority that we can take to help reduce gun violence and save more lives." In addition to expanding and bolstering the background check system to cover sales that take place online and at gun shows, Obama said the administration will provide more funding for mental health treatment, FBI staff and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco Firearms and Explosives agents. On Capitol Hill, the reaction from Republicans was just as Obama had predicted. House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI), said Obama's actions "will no doubt be challenged in the courts" and "can be overturned by a Republican president." "From day one, the President has never respected the right to safe and legal gun ownership that our nation has valued since its founding," Ryan said in a statement. "He knows full well that the law already says that people who make their living selling firearms must be licensed, regardless of venue. Still, rather than focus on criminals and terrorists, he goes after the most law-abiding

14 Wednesday, January 13, 2016

of citizens. His words and actions amount to a form of intimidation that undermines liberty." Will Obama's gun moves face a legal challenge? Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton, meanwhile, vowed in New Hampshire on Tuesday that she will "take on that fight" and continue Obama's gun control push if she's elected. On Twitter, in a tweet signed "-H" to indicate it was written by Clinton, rather than her staff, the former secretary of state thanked Obama "for taking a crucial step forward on gun violence. Our next President has to build on that progress— not rip it away." And her campaign highlighted Republican candidates' criticism of Obama's comments on its website, warning that a GOP president would undo Obama's actions. Many polls have found broad support for expanded background checks -- the most recent being a Quinnipiac University poll in December. In that survey, 89 percent overall support it, 84 percent in gun-owning households, 87 percent of Republicans, 86 percent of independents, and 95 percent of Democrats. In a December CNN/ ORC poll, 48 percent of Americans said they were in favor of stricter gun control laws, 51 percent were opposed. Support for stricter laws has been less than half since 2013. There's a sharp partisan divide on the question, with 74 percent of Democrats in favor of stricter laws, while just 23 percent of Republicans feel the same way. Among those who live in a gun-owning household, 29 percent favor stricter laws, that rises to 65 percent among those who live in households where no one owns a gun. Just 35 percent approve of Obama's handling of gun policy, including 56 percent of Democrats and 55 percent of liberals. That's well below his approval rating among Democrats/liberals for other top issue.

Thursday, January 7: The Harlem Globetrotters played their first game in Hinckley, Illinois in 1927. Wearing red, white, and blue uniforms that their coach had sewn in his father’s tailor shop, it is essentially the same design the team continues to use. Friday, January 8: Charles Deslondes, a 31-year-old field laborer from a plantation near the Mississippi River led a slave revolt in 1811 that grew to include nearly 200 participants as recruits joined the march south toward New Orleans. Deslondes was captured and executed by militia within a few days. After the arrival of the Army an additional 151 slaves were tried. Of those 95 were executed and 56 returned to slavery. Another 30 who claimed they had been conscripted were returned to slavery without trial. Three slaves were killed for refusing to participate in the revolt and seven were freed within 40 days for attempting to prevent the uprising. Saturday, January 9: Journalist, author and professor Leon Richard Forrest was born in 1937. For many years he taught English and African American studies at Northwestern University. He also wrote for eight years for various papers, including the Nation of Islam’s weekly, “Muhammad Speaks.” Forrest wrote a number of books about the African American experience that blend myth, history, legend, and contemporary realism. His most ambitious novel, “Divine Day,” was published in 1992. A prominent literary critic described the 1,100page novel as the “War and Peace” of African American literature. Forrest died in 1997. Sunday, January 10: George Washington Carver was born in 1864. Carver was an educator and innovator in the agricultural sciences. In 1896, he became director of the Department of Agricultural Research at Tuskegee University. Carver began an exhaustive series of experiments with peanuts, developing several hundred industrial uses for them as well as for sweet potatoes and soybeans. His discoveries convinced southern farmers to raise other crops in addition to cotton. He also taught methods of soil improvement. Monday, January 11: Singer and entertainer Mary J. Blige was born in 1971. Her debut album, “What’s the 411?” was considered by critics to be a stunning album that bridged the gap between R&B and rap in a way that no female singer had before. Her 1995 follow-up, “My Life,” was equally well received. It contained more raw emotion that was drawn in part from ghetto pathos and Blige’s own painful and rocky personal relationships. She continues to tour and has accepted several acting roles in recent years. Tuesday, January 12: The National Association of Black Scuba Divers (NABS) was formed in 1991. Its purpose is to foster camaraderie among African American divers, and to address the unique problems and concerns of the African-American community, according to information on its internet website. Since the formation of NABS, the organization has blossomed to over 2,000 members across the country and internationally. Wednesday, January 13:.Don Barksdale became the first African American to appear in an NBA All Star game in 1953. He was also the first African American to be named an NCAA All-American during his college years and was also the first African American to play on a United States men’s Olympic basketball team in London in 1948.He died in 1993. www.milwaukeetimesnews.com

Public Notification of a Seizure Research Study in Milwaukee County

Researchers at the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, Froedtert Hospital, and the Medical College of Wisconsin are studying the best way to treat long seizures. This study will begin in January 2016. This study will compare three commonly used medicines given in the emergency department for long seizures. A person whose seizure does not stop even after receiving a full dose of medicine that can stop seizures (benzodiazepines) has a long seizure. This means that doctors need to use other medicines besides benzodiazepines. Researchers do not know which of the medicines will work the best. The three common medicines are fosphenytoin, valproic acid, and levetiracetam. The study plans to learn which of the three medicines works the best to stop a seizure quickly. Normally, researchers get permission before a person can be included in a research study. A long seizure is an emergency and the doctors have to act quickly to treat a person. This means that there is little time to get permission. A person having a seizure is unconscious and cannot agree to join. In studies like this, a person’s consent before treatment is not possible. This is called an exception from informed consent for emergency circumstances. Researchers will discuss the study with the patient or family as soon as possible. This study meets the U.S. Food and Drug Administration guidelines for exception from informed consent under emergency circumstances. Opting out of this study: Any adult who does not wish to be enrolled in this study may opt-out by wearing an opt-out bracelet or necklace. These may be requested free of charge by calling (414) 805-6493 or emailing ESETT@mcw.edu. Any parent/ guardian of a child 17 years and younger that does not wish their child to be enrolled in this study may call (414)-805-6493 or email ESETT@mcw.edu to discuss the opt-out options. For information about the study or to request to not be included, please call Dr. Tom Aufderheide or Dr. Danny Thomas at (414) 805-6493, email at ESETT@mcw.edu, or visit the website at www.mcw.edu/ESETT.
