Mayor Johnson throws out first pitch at Brewers vs. Marlins game

On Saturday, October 1, 2022, the Milwaukee hosted the Miami Marlins at American Family Field. As part of the festivities Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson threw out the ceremonial first pitch to kick off the game. Though the mayor did a commendable job throwing out the first pitch, the Brewers on the other hand blew a ninth-inning lead. Thus the Brewers squandered a great opportunity to pull even in the race for the final Nation al League playoff spot, losing to the Miami Marlins 4-3 on Saturday night. It has been an interesting season for the Brewers and Milwaukee wishes them luck next year!

Currently the playoffs are set with the first games starting on Friday, Octo ber 7, 2022. In the National League the match-ups look like this: Byes: No. 1 Los Angeles Dodgers and No. 2 Atlanta Braves Wild Card Series: No. 5. San Diego Padres at No. 4 New York Mets Wild Card Series: No. 6. Philadelphia Phillies at No. 3 St. Louis Cardinals

There isn't re-seeding after the first round. It's a locked bracket, so the winner of the Padres-Mets gets the Dodgers in the NLDS while the winner of the Phillies-Cardinals series gets the defending champion Braves. The individual game times haven't been assigned yet, but we know all four Wild Card Series will be played Friday, Saturday and, if necessary, the clinching Game 3 would be played Sunday.

Coolio, ‘Gangsta’s Paradise’ rapper, dead at 59

Coolio, the ’90s rapper who lit up the music charts with hits like “Gangsta’s Par adise” and “Fantastic Voyage,” has died, his friend and man ager Jarez Posey, told CNN He was 59.

Posey said Coolio died Wednesday, September 28, 2022.

Details on the circum stances were not immediately available.

When contacted by CNN, Capt. Erik Scott of the Los Angeles Fire Department confirmed that firefighters and paramedics responded to a call on the 2900 block of South Chesapeake Ave. at 4 p.m. local time for reports of a medical emergency. When they arrived, they found an unresponsive male and per formed “resuscitation efforts for approximately 45 min utes.”

The patient “was deter mined dead just before 5:00 p.m.,” Scott said.

An autopsy performed on Coolio Thursday, September 29, 2022 did not reveal the cause or manner of Coolio’s death and further investiga tion will be conducted, ac cording to case information

from the county coroner..

“We are saddened by the loss of our dear friend and client,” a statement provided to CNN from Coolio’s talent manager Sheila Finegan said.

“He touched the world with the gift of his talent and will be missed profound ly. Thank you to everyone worldwide who has listened to his music and to everyone who has been reaching out regarding his passing. Please have Coolio’s loved ones in your thoughts and prayers.”

Actor Lou Diamond Phil lips also offered his condo lences as he recounted some memories with the artist.

“I am absolutely stunned. Coolio was a friend and one of the warmest, funniest peo ple I’ve ever met. We spent an amazing time together mak ing Red Water in Capetown and we loved going head-to -head in the kitchen. He was one of a kind. Epic,Legend ary and I’ll miss him,” Phil lips said in a tweet.

Former NBA player Matt Bonner also recalled time spent with Coolio, saying in a Twitter post the rapper was a “huge hoops fan… we hosted him at a game a few

years back… biggest crowd of all-time at a Spurs Over time concert.”

Coolio grew up in Comp ton, CA, according to a bio on his official website.

Speaking to the Los Ange les Times in 1994, he recalled falling into the drug scene but getting himself out by pursuing a career as a fire fighter.

“I wasn’t looking for a ca reer, I was looking for a way to clean up – a way to escape the drug thing,” he told the publication. “It was going to kill me and I knew I had to stop. In firefighting training

was discipline I needed. We ran every day. I wasn’t drink ing or smoking or doing the stuff I usually did.”

His rap career began in the ’80s, and he gained fame in the underground scene.

“Fantastic Voyage” was the first song that really put him on the map.

Arguably his biggest song, “Gangsta’s Paradise,” from the soundtrack to the film “Dan gerous Minds,” grew his star power to gigantic propor tions. He won a Grammy in 1996 for the song.

In the age of streaming, it has continued to live on. In

Lizzo played James Madison's 200-year-old crystal flute at her Washington, DC concert

Ever the pioneer, Liz zo crossed off another first during the Washington, DC, stop of her tour — playing an approximately 200-year-old crystal flute that belonged to a former U.S. president.

The singer and accom plished flutist carefully played the delicate wood wind, which was sent as a gift to James Madison in 1813 by the French flute maker Claude Laurent. The Library of Congress has maintained the flute in its vault for de cades before allowing Lizzo to play it onstage.

In footage shared by con certgoers, Lizzo excitedly and delicately handled the flute under the careful watch of Library staff and Capitol Police. She briefly shared the history of the flute with her audience and said she was "the first person to ever play it."

She played a note on the crystal flute, pausing excit edly after it made a sound, according to a video Liz zo shared on social media. Then, she blew a few more fluttery notes on it, cautious ly twerking as she played, as is her signature. After a few seconds, she held the flute high in the air, victorious, and carefully returned it to the staff waiting a few feet away.

Lizzo then thanked the library for "preserving our

history" and reminded her fans that "history is freaking cool."

Earlier this week, the Li brary of Congress invited Lizzo to visit its collection of 1,700 flutes, the largest in the world, per the library. She carefully played the flute there first before she "sere naded employees and a few researchers" with a "more practical" woodwind, the Li brary said.

Lizzo asked the library if she could play the famed flute for a few moments during her Washington show, and the library obliged, though it sent Capitol Police and sev eral other staffers in charge of security along with the flute to ensure its safety.

The recent Emmy win ner regularly plays the flute during her concerts and has experimented with other rare and valuable flutes, includ

ing an 18k-gold instrument, though she's partial to one woodwind named Sasha Flute.

The flute bounced between owners before landing at the library.

The flute is exceptionally rare: the Library of Congress has 20 Laurent-made flutes in its vault, but it's only one of two made of crystal, ac cording to the library. Madi son's custom-made flute con tained a silver joint, engraved with his name.

But its journey to the Li brary's collection was cir cuitous and took over 100 years. The flute may have been saved by First Lady Dolley Madison during the White House fire in 1814, the Library said. It came into the possession of Dolley Madison's son from her first marriage, John Payne Todd, who bequeathed it to Wash

ington-based Dr. Cornelius Boyle.

Boyle's descendants al lowed the flute to be dis played in 1903 at the U.S. National Museum, an orig inal part of the Smithsonian Institution, until Dayton C. Miller, another physician and

July 2022, the song reached a milestone one billion views on YouTube.

“It’s one of those kinds of songs that transcends gener ations,” he said in a recent interview. “I didn’t use any trendy words…I think it made it timeless.”

Over his career, Coolio sold more than 17-million records, according to his website.

Coolio also has a special place in the hearts of some Millennials for his work on the theme song for the pop ular Nickelodeon TV series “Kenan and Kel” and his con tribution to the album “Dex ter’s Laboratory: The Hip-Hop Experiment,” which featured songs by various hip-hop art ists that were inspired by the Cartoon Network animated series.

In recent years, Coolio enjoyed the perks of being a nostalgic figure, making tele vision appearances on shows like “Celebrity Cook Off” and “Celebrity Chopped.”

He also had a show on Oxygen, “Coolio’s Rules,” that aired 2008.

woodwind enthusiast, pur chased it. He later donated the crystal flute, along with 1,700 instruments, to the library in 1941, where the flute has remained until its stage debut with Lizzo.

During a recent doctor vis it, I was asked to complete a written questionnaire about any symptoms of illness I may have experienced with in the past 30 days. Of the 40 questions on the form, 37 involved situations that concerned physical health issues – such as fever, cough ing, sneezing, allergies, blood pressure and pain fluctua tions. Only 3 questions dealt with mental health status; and those were vaguely word ed and placed at the end of the survey.

Relegating mental health issues to a back seat in the overall health picture seems to be standard procedure in the U.S. medical regimen. The fact is, mental health is just as important as physical health, and possibly more of a driving force in overall well-being.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), mental health in cludes emotional, psycho logical, and social well-be ing. It affects how a person thinks, feels/believes and acts as they cope with life and its

Mental health is part of total health

ever-changing, un predictable events. It determines how we handle stress, view ourselves and others, and make decisions.

Treating mental health issues re quires physicians to interact with patients on a per son-to-person lev el. However, un less a person seeks out a psycholo gist, psychiatrist or therapist, most mental health issues are ad dressed by primary care phy sicians during a routine peri odic check-up. If a person doesn’t have a primary care doctor, then mental health issues may not be addressed at all.

According to a 2016 study by the American Time Use Survey and published by WebMD in which 19,200 doctors in 26 specialties par ticipated, it was found that the typical medical appoint ment takes 121 minutes on average. That includes travel

time, completing paperwork, waiting, lab work, and the actual medical exam. Of that 2-hour time allotment, only 13-20 minutes are spent on actual physician-patient in teraction. That doesn’t leave enough time to get the pa tient’s or doctor’s name right, let alone to establish and build a mutually productive, trust-based, professional re lationship, and answer any questions the patient or phy sician may have.

There are many benefits to addressing mental health is sues on an equal basis with

physical health.

The primary benefit is an enhanced qual

ity of life on many fronts, including:

• Clearer think ing and im proved prob lem-solving

• Reduced anx iety

• Greater sense of inner peace

• Reduced risk of depression

• Improved, more effective sleep

• Increased self-esteem and self-acceptance

• Improved relationships with others

After more than two years of dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic, it seems that we are turning the corner and putting that episode in the rear-view mirror of history... Modern science has been able to develop vaccines to help minimize the physical ravag es of the disease. However, whether or not we acknowl edge it, we are all still dealing with the mental trauma that

the pandemic brought about for all of us – including death of loved ones, fear of con tracting the disease, loss of face-to-face fellowship with family and friends, and other forms of social isolation.

There is no doubt that physical health is important; and the miracles that we have been able to develop over time through the applica tion of science are not to be downplayed. However, the simple act of taking time to listen and try to understand what drives the mind has just as much to contribute in our quest to improve health as a human race. If we’re smart, we will take an integrated approach to both the mental and physical aspects of health to arrive at a more fulfilling, total experience of life.

Think about that, and act on it.

Equity is

possible

No room for racism in health care

We are used to treating people who are in pain. And, when we do, we look at both causes and symptoms. We care for the whole person — that’s why we continue to do our part to treat racism as a health crisis. We set goals and measure our progress to hold ourselves accountable. For example, we’re working to close the care gap for breast cancer screening in our Black, Indigenous and people of color (BIPOC) patient populations.

We’re proud to share that year-over-year, we increased the percentage of breast cancer screenings in BIPOC patient populations from 67.45% to 71.53%. This helps to close the gap between BIPOC and non-BIPOC patient populations.

Through our efforts, we will help eradicate racism in health care. We continue to examine our biases and always evaluate our policies and practices to deliver culturally and linguistically equitable care.

Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) hosted a celebration on September 21, 2022, at Rogers Street Academy to launch ST Math across the district. The program allows students to accelerate math skills and provides lessons and supports for educators. Students were greeted as they arrived for school with cheer ing staff and representatives of ST Math, along with JiJi, the ST Math penguin mas cot.

The launch event allowed media to see students en gaged in ST math and in cluded an inspirational visit from Jay Flores, an alumnus of MPS Rufus King High School and founder of In vent the Change, a nonprof it organization devoted to promoting science, technol ogy, engineering, and math (STEM) skills for children. Flores spoke to students about STEM careers and about his experiences as an American Ninja Warrior.

MPS piloted ST Math in four schools seven years ago and has made ST Math available this year in most

Increasing numbers of black Americans report mental health concerns, survey finds

More black Americans are expressing a need for mental health services, according to new data from CVS Health and Morning Consult. The annual survey, now in its fifth year, shows that since 2020, there’s been an 11 percent increase in black Americans reporting mental health con cerns.

More than 2,000 Ameri can adults participated in the survey, which is conducted in an effort to develop interven tions to reduce suicide rates.

The latest data shows that black and Hispanic groups accounted for roughly half of mental health services used. Survey participants expressed a range of concerns from “persistent symptoms of sad ness” to feeling “that every thing is an effort.”

CVS Health’s 2022 data showed that since the pan demic, more than half of survey respondents said that they were more comfortable with engaging in discussions about mental health, while 58 percent are using digital tools to access care — like telemedicine.

Providers in the region are noticing this trend as well.

Yavar Moghimi, medical di rector of behavioral health for AmeriHealth Caritas, said demand for telemedicine therapy services is increasing.

“One of the big changes that we saw with COVID-19 was changes in telehealth reg ulations that provide easier access points for all types of health care visits,” he said.

AmeriHealth Caritas, one of the region’s leading health insurance companies for Medicaid, is a primary player in behavioral health services.

According to Dr. Moghimi, the company saw an increase in medicaid claims for behav ioral health services during the pandemic — and tele health was a factor.

Behavioral health was one of our number one telehealth visits, just based on claims. We’re seeing an exponential rise in going from in-person to telehealth,” Moghimi said.

Recent studies have shown that telehealth medicine helped close racial healthcare gaps during the pandemic. Dr. Moghimi said that di minishing stigma around mental health issues in BI POC (black, indigenous, and people of color) com munities, while increasing telehealth services, was the “perfect storm” in terms of the number of people access ing care.

“We’ve had the pandemic, we’ve had social unrest — ev eryone has been impacted by what’s going on,” Moghimi said. “The level of severity

has been different for peo ple, but everybody’s mental health and well-being has been impacted.”

But for Cassandra Bolding, owner and counselor at Dias pora Educational Services in Wissahickon Valley Park, PA, the data might not provide an accurate enough picture.

“I would have thought it would have been significant ly more,” she said. “When you think about the events surrounding 2020 through the current year, there’s been a collective grief. It was as sociated with people losing loved ones, but also the loss of our way of life as we know it.”

President of Behavioral Health and Mental Well-Be ing at CVS Health, Cara McNulty, acknowledges that concerns about mental health in the BIPOC com munity existed long before

the pandemic.

“There’s the whole reali ty that the black and brown communities have experi enced mental health con cerns for decades,” she said.

But McNulty also said that the COVID-19 pandemic has presented some unique challenges for individuals and families.

“COVID-19 caused a dra matic shift in how we oper ate as communities and how we interact as humans,” she said. “We often function best when we understand the guardrails. COVID-19 is an evolving virus. We’re seeing a trend in the general popula tion over the need for mental health across the board. So this isn’t just one data point. It is a snapshot in time.”

McNulty said that many BIPOC individuals still ex perience reticence about mental health challenges, but

the recent data does point to a larger picture.

“When I look at that 11 percent increase in the black population,” she said, “it’s not solely based on this data. It is a trend we are seeing now.”

Dr. George James is a ther apist with the Council for Relationships in Philadel phia, and has noticed this re cent trend in his practice.

“Prior to the start of the pandemic, I saw an increase in the numbers of African American individuals, cou ples and families showing up for therapy,” he said. “Since the beginning of the pan demic the numbers have in creased significantly.”

He’s encouraged to see that mental health awareness is increasing in BIPOC com munities and would like to see the conversation contin ue.

“People — especially peo ple of color — who believed they didn’t experience anxiety or depression before the pan demic now realize that they do. Many people have real ized that their mental health is connected to their feelings of burnout or vice versa,” he said. “Mental health matters at work, home, in communi ty, and relationships.”

Andrew McCutchen: consistency is the name of the game

Ever since he made his Major League debut for the Pittsburgh Pirates on June 4, 2009 Andrew Stefan Mc Cutchen’s approach to play ing the game of baseball as well as the game of life can be boiled down to one thing: consistency. Doing things the right way over and over and over again.

“I always heard that repe tition is the father of learn ing so that also has the same concept as being consistent,” McCutchen explained. “You repeat things over and over, you do things over and over. When you're doing consis tently, you have a chance of doing good things. So main taining consistency through out not only the game, but your life is always good. It's always good to have... I feel like if it keeps you on the right path and it keeps your mind on the right things, the more you do it, the better your chances of being suc cessful.”

To say that his approach has worked very well would be a supreme understatement. A first round pick (11th pick overall) by the Pirates in the 2005 MLB draft, McCutch en was the NL Most Valuable Player in 2013, a five-time All-Star (2011-15), four-time Silver Slugger Award winner (2012-15), and a Gold Gove winner (2012). McCutch en also captured the coveted Roberto Clemente Award in 2015.

For those who appreciate impressive statistics, Mc Cutchen led the National

League in hits (194) in 2012 and in on-base percentage (.410), OPS (.952) and ex tra base hits (69) in 2014. He topped it off this season with the Milwaukee Brewers by slugging his 1,000th RBI, a milestone that ranks among the most meaningful in his career.

“I think for me what's im portant is knowing and hav ing the opportunity to be able to reach that milestone for me,” said McCutchen. “Having an opportunity be in the lineup, to be on the field even healthy more times than not and getting that op portunity is great. It just lets me know that the amount of work that I've put in over the

years I get to see it right there in front of me. So it’s very important and it's something that I'll be able to have for rest of my life.”

McCutchen has a few thoughts for his younger fans who are trying to find their way in life. The importance of setting goals has always been emphasized by success ful people but McCutchen is not a goal setter in the way one might think.

“I'm not a goal oriented guy because I think you sell yourself short if you set a goal,” he explained. “Specif ically, let’s say I want to hit 25 homers for a year. What if I hit 25? Then I'm think ing, ‘Man, what if I had said 30 or 35? Would I have been able to do it then?’ So I set goals but in different ways.

“It's things that I can con trol. It's being able to keep myself in the right spirits every day, putting the work in before the games and do ing that consistently, doing things I need to do every day, getting in the gym con sistently. I set those goals because those are the goals that are easy but they're hard at the same time. So I try to

Milwaukee Bucks Bobby Portis donates 100,000 meals, partners with Feeding America

On Wednesday, September 14, 2022, at Feeding Ameri ca Eastern Wisconsin, people greeted Bucks player Bobby Portis by chanting his name.

Portis announced a $25,000 donation to the or ganization, which is equiva lent to 100,000 meals. Portis took the stage for an hourlong Q&A. During the dis cussion, he shared his future involvement with Feeding America and the Milwaukee community.

"Being able to come from where I come from, and to be here now, and try to em brace it; try to give back as much as we can," he said.

Portis said he hopes to bring the Bobby Portis Foundation to Milwaukee. It helps single mothers in his home state of Arkansas. Portis and his three brothers

were raised by his mother.

"Back then growing up, I didn't really care about eat ing. I was trying to find any way to help my mom get out of the situations we were in. It wasn't really about me eating, it was more about us grinding and trying to figure out how we're going to get to the next step of our life."

Portis said he hopes to in spire people who share a sim ilar upbringing.

"One day, they can one day be (like) me and sit in the same shoes and talk and tell their story."

According to a Feeding America study, 25 percent of kids in Milwaukee County don’t know where their next meal is coming from. Food insecure populations include 1 in 4 members of the black

SENIOR LIVING

Preparing your senior loved one for the autumn season

The autumnal equinox be gan on September 22, 2022.

At the start of the fall sea son, the sun rises later and nightfall arrives sooner. Plen ty of environmental changes occur, making it necessary to make adjustments and pre pare a senior loved one for the cooler season.

1. Rake the leaves

Crimson autumn leaves are a breathtaking sight. The leaves change color because of the amount of daylight and photosynthesis, and not the cooler temperatures.

Despite their beauty, fallen leaves are hazardous for se niors. Prevent accidental falls by raking up leaves on the driveway and yard.

Give the roads, sidewalks and walkways ample atten tion, taking care to remove all fallen debris. If the se nior’s home has exterior stairs, strongly consider in stalling handrails on both sides. Also place a non-skid surface in this area to prevent slipping and falling on the damp leaves.

2. Drive with caution Daylight Savings Time ends in early autumn, leading to fewer daylight hours. As darkness descends sooner, elderly drivers should take extra precautions. Due to se niors’ poor eyesight, driving in the dark can be hazardous.

If driving is necessary, con sider contacting a home care agency to hire a professional caregiver for transportation.

3. Maintain the vehicle

Prevent the likelihood of

a car accident or an untimely breakdown in adverse weath er by scheduling a tune up of the senior’s car. Correct air pressure in tires. Headlights, tail lights and signals should work properly. Make sure the heat in the car works, so se nior drivers stay warm.

4. Get a flu shot

Getting a flu vaccine for the 2022-2023 flu season is especially critical for people ages 65 and older due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Even though aging immune sys tems tend to respond poorly to vaccinations, flu vaccina tions reduce the number of flu-related hospitalizations.

People over 65 have two flu vaccine options. The first, a high dose flu vaccine, is asso ciated with a higher immune response. The second, the adjuvanted flu vaccine, also promotes a stronger immune response to vaccination. For seniors, either option is ad vised instead of the regular flu shot.

5. Add artificial light

With the days growing darker in the autumn months, seniors will rely more on ar tificial light inside the home. Anticipate the need for ex tra lightbulbs, batteries and candles. If using candles, ad vise the senior to never leave them unattended and to al ways be present when they burn.

Consider installing smart

lights in the senior’s home; these lights turn on auto matically upon sensing mo tion. Plug in nightlights in the hallways to the bathroom to assist during emergency trips. Keep in mind that in adequate lighting is a major contributor to senior falls.

6. Test smoke detectors

While the candles burn, they emit smoke. Stay on top of fire safety by checking the batteries in the smoke detec tors in the senior’s home. A good reminder is to check the smoke detectors when daylight saving time starts in March and ends in Novem ber. At the same time, check the functionality of carbon monoxide detectors.

7. Wear warm clothes

When the weather outside is chilly, people reach for the cozy hats, mittens and coats. But a senior with dementia may fail to realize the dangers of frigid weather. Prepare ahead for the cold weather by ensuring an elderly loved one has easy access to warm weather clothing.

Just as warm clothes are

necessary for the autumn months, waterproof, nonslip shoes are too. Wet, slip pery leaves and icy rain are pathways to outdoor falls. Prevent a fall by encouraging the senior to wear slip-re sistant outdoor shoes when heading out of the house.

Inside the home, non-skid shoes are ideal. Remember that the moisture from rain can be tracked indoors, lead ing to small puddles and slip pery floors. The combination of water, poor lighting and clutter in the halls can result in a fall. Prepare the senior by having her wear non-skid shoes inside.

8. Inspect the heater

Fall weather can drop to uncomfortably cold tem peratures, especially at night. Families should ensure the senior’s heater works by scheduling heating mainte nance well before the cool season. Schedule a chimney inspection and cleaning of the fireplace to prevent a flue fire.

9. Adjust thermostat

Fall is also a good time to

adjust the thermostat. Even better, consider installing a smart thermostat in the se nior’s home. Some smart thermostats are designed specifically for seniors and include large icons for in creased visibility, ease of use and improved control for those with limited motor skills.

10. Wash hands

Seasonal illnesses may be warded off with frequent hand washing. Encourage se niors to regularly wash their hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. The coronavirus, too, is disabled with handwashing with soap and water or using an alco hol-based hand sanitizer.

11. Exercise, eat and sleep

Exercise, like yoga or walk ing, can help decrease a se nior’s chances of becoming sick during the autumn sea son. Physical activity also promotes strong muscles and healthy joints, which can re duce fall risks. A good night’s rest helps to keep a senior’s immune system healthy.

Nourishment is essential. A senior loved one should partake in the autumnal sea son’s bounties, like sweet po tato, broccoli, pumpkin and cranberries, to promote heart health and boost the immune system. If the senior is un able to cook, a professional caregiver will prepare nutri ent-rich dishes.
