Milwaukee Brewers shut out Colorado Rockies to sweep NLDS

It's on to the National League Championship Series for the Milwaukee Brewers. The Brewers beat the Colorado Rockies 6-0 at Coors Field to sweep the NLDS, with shutouts in the final two games of the series. Five Milwaukee relievers combined to give up just one hit in 41/3 innings to close out the game. Milwaukee scored in the first inning, got a solo homer from Jesus Aguilar in the fourth, added two more in the sixth and scored two in the ninth on back-to-back homers from Orlando Arcia and Keon Broxton. Lefty Wade Miley got the start for the Brewers, scattering three hits with two strikeouts across 4⅔ innings. The Brewers have won 11 in a row dating from September 23 and will have home-field advantage in the NLCS, which begins Friday, October 12, 2018 in Milwaukee against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Counseling Corner

By Rev. Judith T. Lester, B.Min. M.Th

Avoiding burnout (Week 2) “…he leads me beside quiet waters, he restores my soul.” - Ps. 23:2b-3, NIV This month this column is focusing on the topic of burnout for two reasons: First, to clarify the aspects of burnout and identify its work-related implications, including, but not limited to clergy. The second reason is to offer tips to avoid burnout, thus helping one to maintain their equilibrium and enhance their ability to function in the workplace, whether in the church or in the secular arena. As we continue, let’s look at clergy burnout.

dedicated, well-meaning people-carers whose motives are not only pure but Holy Spirit driven. Coate (1989) argued that while everyone is susceptible to occupational stress at some time or another, ministers find it difficult to admit to stress, feeling that they should be more able to cope with it than their secular counterparts.1

Clergy burnout Clergy are vulnerable to experiencing stress, fatigue and burnout as they often push themselves unrealistically due to the demands of ministry. Working in ministry, building and maintaining relationships takes a toll on these

Sanford (1982) drew attention to the repetitious nature of the work of the ministry, the realization that the work can never be finished and the difficulty of knowing whether it is having any results. In much of their work, min-

isters are required to present a public persona that is emotionally exhausting to maintain.2 While the church wants to think their pastor is infallible, laity must understand and grant humanity to the pastor. The pastor must be granted furloughs and vacations and given an opportunity for regular personal spiritual retreats and time with their family. This is also true of youth ministers. Oftentimes the stress of the job as a youth minister can go unrecognized by the church, even though the warning signs are there. C. H. Spurgeon, in Lectures

to My Students, Vol. 1, Lecture III encouraged the preacher to take time for “holy days” by retreating for a week or month if they cannot keep up the freshness and vigor of their souls. Spurgeon said, “I would seriously recommend to you, when settled in the ministry, the celebration of extraordinary seasons of devotion. If your ordinary prayers do not keep up the freshness and vigor of your souls, and you feel that you are flagging, get alone for a week, or even a month, if possible.” These times of refreshment will avoid clergy burnout.

Perhaps you sent a lovely card, or sat quietly in a chair; Perhaps you sent a floral piece, if so, we saw it there. Perhaps you spoke the kindest words that any friend could say. Keith Posley named permanent MPS superintendent Just months into his term as interim superintendent of Milwaukee Public Schools, Dr. Keith Posley has been named to the permanent post. Milwaukee school board members voted unanimously Tuesday, October 9, 2018, to offer Posley the position. "It just seemed like a natural fit," said MPS board President Mark Sain. "He's a homegrown talent who has worked in this district for 29 years. And folks are impressed with him and the direction he's trying to take the district." Posley said he was honored by their decision. "I'm excited to roll up my sleeves and continue the work we've already started," he said. "Nothing is more important than the success of young people." The terms of the contract are still being negotiated,

MPS Superintendent Dr. Keith Posley Posley said. A former teacher and principal, Posley had served as chief of school administration, overseeing administrators across the district, when he was named interim superintendent in April. He succeeded Darienne Driver.

Survive Alive House kicks off 'National Fire Prevention Week' On Monday, October. 8, 2018, MPS students, local dignitaries, and experienced Milwaukee firefighters kicked off the 2018 National Fire Prevention Week at the Survive Alive House with fire safety lessons from Mayor Tom Barrett, MPS superintendent Dr. Keith P. Posley, MPS School Board President Mark Sain, and Fire Chief Mark Rohlfing. Second grade students from the nearby Milwaukee Spanish Immersion School also showed off their "I Will Survive" performance before going through the Survive Alive curriculum, which featured a classroom tutorial from firefighters and situational lessons inside the Survive Alive House. “Fire prevention education plays a vital role in ensuring the safety of our children, families, and the entire community,” Posley said. “The Survive Alive House serves as a model for how experiential learning results in transferable skills, and we are pleased to celebrate the incredible impact the program has on our community as we launch Fire Prevention Week.” The students, parents, and firefighters reviewed fire safety keys on Monday, such as preparing for an emergency situation; establishing safe zones around the house; stop, drop, and roll; safely exiting a room or building; calling for help; and communicating with 9-1-1. Along with a classroom, the Survive Alive House is equipped with two different practice bed-

rooms, windows with ladders, non-harmful fog smoke machines, fire effect lights, and monitors for students and spectators to watch and learn from the emergency situation. Once the students

emerge from the house, there is even a life-size smart phone for students to practice a call with a 9-1-1 operator. "We have been reminded that fires can happen any-

where far too often in our community," Sain, a former firefighter himself, said Monday. "Fire Prevention Week challenges us... to work together to prevent tragic fires." Adrian Cross, a 12-year-old MPS student, passed away in a fire last month. Dr. Posley held a moment of silence for Adrian and his family prior to speaking at Monday's event. The Survive Alive House officially opened its doors in February 1992. Since then, the Milwaukee Fire Department and Milwaukee Recreation have jointly managed the house. On an annual basis, every second and fifth grader enrolled in MPS visits the Survive Alive House; more than 380,000 children have experienced the fire

safety program since its inception. As a result, Milwaukee’s fire-related fatalities among school-aged children have decreased dramatically. The Foundation for the Milwaukee Fire Education Center has funded several technological upgrades to the Survive Alive House in both the classroom and the “street scene.” These improvements assist the instructors with their presentation and enhance the impact this program has on students. Additionally, a recent partnership with The Hero In You Foundation’s Rocket Rules safety education program will provide students with interactive lessons and fire safety education books to supplement their field trip experience.

Everyday Health

What you need to know about sickle cell disease Sickle cell disease is a blood disorder that’s passed down from parents to their kids. Babies are born with sickle cell disease when they inherit 2 abnormal genes (one from each parent). These genes cause the body’s red blood cells to change shape. What sickle cell disease does to the blood Instead of moving through the bloodstream easily, sickle cells can clog blood vessels. When blood can’t get where it’s needed, the body’s tissues and organs don’t have the oxygen they need to stay healthy. Normal red blood cells last about 4 months in the bloodstream. But fragile sickle cells break down after only about 10–20 days. This usually causes anemia. Anemia is what happens when the body’s number of red blood

cells (or amount of hemoglobin) falls below normal. People who are anemic often feel weak, tire more easily and may appear worn out. People with sickle cell disease might have other problems because their blood isn’t moving through the body as well as it should. They have a higher chance of getting

infections, having a stroke and getting a condition called acute chest syndrome. Acute chest syndrome is caused by inflammation, infection or blood vessels in the lungs that are blocked by sickle cells. Signs and problems people with sickle cell can have

M&S CLINICAL SERVICES, INC Northside Access Point 2821 N 4th Street, Suite 210 Milwaukee, WI 53212 414-263-6000 fax 414-263-2270

Most people with sickle cell disease have some degree of anemia (anemia is a condition when there are fewer red blood cells to carry oxygen around the body) in their blood than people who do not have the disease. They may get tired more easily, look pale or have a fast pulse. People with sickle cell anemia may develop jaundice. This happens because more fragile sickle-shaped red blood cells break down faster. Jaundice can cause a person’s skin and whites of the eyes to develop a yellowish tint. It’s also common for people with sickle cell disease to have trouble fighting infections. Teens may grow more slowly and reach puberty later than other people. People with sickle cell anemia might have times where they feel severe pain in their chest, stomach, arms, legs or other parts of the body. This happens because sickle cells block blood flow through the small blood vessels in those areas. When sickle-shaped cells block blood vessels in the brain, it puts people at risk of having a stroke. Signs of a stroke include headache, seizures, weakness of the arms and legs, speech problems,

a droop on one side of the face and loss of consciousness. Other possible problems that sickle-shaped cells can cause include leg ulcers, bone or joint damage, gallstones, kidney damage, eye damage and delayed growth. How you can stay healthy if you have sickle cell disease If you have sickle cell disease, you can do most of the things everyone else does if you take the right steps. To stay as healthy as possible: • Eat a balanced, healthy diet. • Take medicines exactly as your doctor tells you. • Drink plenty of fluids and stay away from extreme cold or heat. • Exercise regularly, but in moderation. • Get plenty of rest and stay away from alcohol, drugs and smoking. If you have sickle cell disease, you may need to put some limits on your activities. But with the help of doctors, friends and family, you can manage the condition and live your life to the fullest. Brought to you by : My Choice Family Care

Choosing the best assisted living facility for your loved one With the array of assisted living facilities available throughout the United States, the sheer amount of choices can seem overwhelming; however, making the right choice is made easier when you start the search prepared. Think of the process in three steps: • Decide what you need • Find locations that match your needs • Evaluate locations using multiple resources • Throughout the journey for your new home, keep the focus on finding a residence that will keep you or your loved one happy and healthy in the present and for the years to come. How to find an assisted living facility Before you begin looking at assisted living facilities, think about your needs and desires for a long-term residence. Consider your preferred location. Some people desire a location near doctors and a major hospital, while others prefer a location central to shopping and entertainment. You may desire a location near your children and grandchildren. Decide what features you desire in your living space. You may want an extra bedroom for a guest or desire a kitchenette or patio for entertaining. Think about the amenities and activities that bring you joy. Assisted living communities may have pools, movie theaters, art studios, putting greens and on-site cafes, salons and bars.

best resources for objectively evaluating the community. Talking to residents and their families provides you with the inside scoop on a number of issues, including how promptly staff handles maintenance issues, how often new activities are scheduled, how well residents get along and how often staff turns over. Another resource is the long-term care ombudsman for the facility’s state or local area. An ombudsman will tell you about any complaints against the facility.
