The Milwaukee Fatherhood Initiative hosts 11th Annual Fatherhood Summit On October 7 and October 8, 2016 Mayor Tom Barrett presented The Milwaukee Fatherhood Initiatives' "11th Annual Fatherhood Summit." The two-day event was held at Greater New Birth Church, 8237 W. Silver Spring Drive. This year's theme was "Planting Seeds to Grow Stronger Fathers and Families," and reflected the efforts of the Fatherhood Initiative to strengthen families in our great city by supporting the men in our community with services, and outreach to strengthen them to become better fathers. Among the ways the Fatherhood Initiative offers support is through self-improvement workshops, employment opportunities in and around the city, driver's license recovery assessments, child support case reviews, job training opportunities, education services (GED, HSED, trades, CDL, etc.), health information and screenings, expungement supportive services, and family court services (bankruptcies, child placement, etc.). The day also featured a special tribute to longtime fatherhood advocate and radio personality the late Eric Von. Pictured at the event (from left) are Milwaukee Fatherhood Initiative co-director Dennis C. Walton, and Milwaukee Municipal court judge and keynote speaker Derek Mosley.

As election approaches, research the issues that matter to you By Urban Media News Staff In the midst of the most turbulent campaign for President in memory, much is being made of candidates for federal and local offices on a personal level. Who said what about whom, or which candidate does or does not support this or that nominee may make for good ratings, but the reality is that none of us will be having a beer with the next Commander-in-Chief. The focus on those matters has taken focus away from the policies candidates support which impact people’s daily lives, leaving some voters undecided about who they will cast a vote for. The good news is that there is more information available to voters than ever before about the platforms, proposals, and policy positions of candidates for office. Whether or not you have made up your mind who to support, it is imperative to the functioning of our democracy that voters understand the issues at stake and how leaders plan to address them. Before you vote, do your own research on the candidates you are considering so you know what you are going to get and can hold them accountable for the promises they have made. Here are just a few examples of issues which have not gotten much discussion during this election that are worth examining all of the candidates on. Clean drinking water: Everyone has seen the devastating effect of polluted drinking water on the children and families of Flint, MI. Given what has happened in Flint,

it is essential that voters look into the candidates’ plans to prevent what happened there from happening elsewhere. Retirement security: Social Security, pensions, and personal savings constitute the overwhelming majority of the dollars retirees use to pay their bills every month. As debate rages about the strength of the Social Security system and if benefits should be changed or eligibility ages should be raised, consider your own situation and what you expect from the candidates you support on the issue. Even if you are young or still working, retirement will be here before you know it. Consider your personal financial situation and examine what the candidates are saying about how their policies will impact your own retirement. Job creation/outsourcing: Wisconsin’s economy has lagged behind the national recovery following the Great Recession. Virtually every candidate for office shares their beliefs on how the public sector (government) can support private sector job creation and entrepreneurship. Look into what they are saying about the way they want to grow the economy and ask yourself if that will improve your life. Of particular note in the current economy is how candidates propose keeping Wisconsin jobs in industries like manufacturing here in Wisconsin. College affordability: Post-secondary education remains the surest path to a prosperous future and access to opportunities. From technical colleges and trade schools to four-year univer-

Developing a strong prayer life

If we are to grow spiritually in the Lord Jesus we must develop a strong and consistent prayer life. There is just no way that we are ever going to have that closeness with the Lord that our souls are so yearning for, without a consistent prayer life. It is imperative that we learn to talk with the Lord. A strong prayer life endears us to God the Father through the conduit of Jesus Christ by the power of His holy and precious name.

Prayer takes us to that glorious and majestic throne room of God, and positions us at the feet of Jesus our King. A strong and consistent prayer life is essential for spiritual growth. Prayer is the purveyor for dialog with God the father in the name of Jesus for His own. Prayer is the exchange of hearts, desires, needs and intimacies between the redeemed and their God. In the book of Matthew, the author says that we should ASK the

Lord. In other words, talk with Him, share with Him, actively seek after Him, and knock on the doors of life and see that He will answer your prayer. Prayer helps us to grow spiritually; what an awesome God we serve. Yes, the Lord desires for us to talk with Him, to ask of Him; and before too long we will find ourselves asking for those things that He desires for us to have, and seeking those things that are pleasing to Him. After a while we will

only desire to knock on those doors that we will intuitively know that He desires for us to walk through. Developing our prayer life There will ultimately come a time when our souls desire to only pray for those things that we know are pleasing to Him. When that time comes, then we would have come to that place in our prayer life when we have learned how to put Him first. At such time, we will have arrived at a place in our lives where He

will really begin to bless us, and to give us the desires of our hearts; because our will is now His will. What an awesome God we serve. Now we know what to pray for, and how to pray. How do we approach God when we encounter situations beyond our control? What do we do when we have reached the end of our resources and there is no one to help us out of our dilemma? When things get so bad that they just can’t, in our estimation, get any worse, the good news is, we can pray and watch the Lord do what he does best; make things happen. There are many that will attest to the truth that prayer changes things. Yes my friend, prayer will and does make a difference. What is the secret to reaching God when we need help pertaining to our finances, loss of a loved one, loss of a job, health, happiness, and personal problems with a relationship? Just pray. When we don’t know what to pray for, just ask the Lord to have mercy; that is always a good place to start. We need to learn how to pray and what to ask for when we pray. We need to know when is the best time to pray, we need to learn the how, what and when of praying. We will get a spiritual confidence when we are equipped to pray for ourselves, or someone else. Pray anytime, anyplace anywhere for any situation and all circumstances. Remember this: Just pray, the best time to pray is anytime, the best place is any place, the best way is anyway, always end it by invoking the name of Jesus. There is no name in heaven or in earth that is higher than the name of Jesus. Suggested Scripture References: Matthew 7:7 (KJV) - Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. Matthew 26:39 (KJV) - And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt. Acts 4:12 - Neither is there salvation in any other for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

The Counseling Corner

By Rev. Judith T. Lester, B.Min. M.Th

Breast Cancer Awareness Month (Week 3) October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is a campaign that educates the public about the importance of early detection. President Obama in his 2015 Proclamation for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month noted: “Breast cancer, one of the most common cancers among American women, affects roughly 230,000 women as well as 2,300 men each year and is responsible for more than 40,000 deaths annually in the United States. Breast cancer does not discriminate -- it strikes people of all races, ages, and income levels -- and we must raise awareness of this disease and its symptoms so we can more easily identify it and more effectively treat it.” For the next two weeks, this column will look at Male Breast Cancer. Breast cancer is a malignant (cancerous) tumor that starts from the cells of the breast. While this disease primarily strikes women, men can get breast cancer, too. Key statistics regarding men and breast cancer

The American Cancer Society estimates for breast cancer in men in the United States for 2016 are: • About 2,600 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed. • About 440 men will die from breast cancer. • Breast cancer is about 100 times less common among men than among women. For men, the lifetime risk of getting breast cancer is about 1 in 1,000. The number of breast cancer cases in men relative to the population has been fairly stable over the last 30 years. Many people are taken aback to learn that men have breast tissue and they can develop breast cancer. Until puberty (on average around age 9 or 10), young boys and girls have a small amount of breast tissue consisting of a few ducts located under the nipple and areola (area around the nipple). At puberty, a girl's ovaries make female hormones, causing breast ducts to grow, lob-

ules to form at the ends of ducts, and the amount of stroma (supporting tissue) to increase. Even after puberty, men and boys normally have low levels of female hormones, and breast tissue doesn’t grow much. Men's breast tissue has ducts, but only a few if any lobules. Like all cells of the body, a man's breast duct cells can undergo cancerous changes. But breast cancer is less common in men because their breast duct cells are less developed than a woman’s

and because they normally have lower levels of female hormones that affect the growth of like to contact Rev. Lester, write breast cells. The to her c/o P.O. Sherman welcomes top early childhood education official Milwaukee Public Schools’ Sherman Multicultural Arts School welcomed a top education official Tuesday, October 4, 2016 for a tour of its Head Start classrooms.

North Division High School seeks volunteer tutors The North Division High School Alumni Association is seeking volunteers to tutor students in reading, science and math. Tutoring will take place after school from 4:00 - 5:30 p.m. Tutors are asked to commit at least one day per week from February through May. We need assistance from the community in order to help our students succeed. If interested, please contact Helen Harris at (414) 616-3237 or Jim Smith at (414) 2675101 or at jsmithmiltimes@gmail.com.

Linda Smith, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Early Learning for the U.S. Department of Education, is a staunch advocate for the Head Start Program. Deputy Assistant Secretary Smith visited Sherman as part of a tour of Milwaukee Head Start facilities through the Milwaukee Education Partnership. Head Start is a free child and family development program offering half-day educational programs for threeyear-old kindergarten and full-day programs for fouryear-old children.

MPS is now the largest Head Start grantee in Wisconsin. The MPS Head Start program has full access to district resources including nutrition services, facili-

ties and maintenance, media and communications, as well as transportation. Serving 1440 K3 and K4 students through state and

federal funds, the MPS Head Start program can be found in 23 schools across the city, offering both monolingual and bilingual programming.

Sherman welcomed the Head Start program in 2013 and is one of the largest Head Start sites in MPS.

Coalition aims to increase number of Milwaukee high school seniors applying for free financial aid for college The federal government provides more than $150 billion in financial aid for college or career school. Unfortunately fewer Milwaukee high school seniors qualify because they do not complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The application not only gives applicants access to federal assistance, it is also the gateway for applying for nearly every other form of financial aid. A coalition of groups titled “Milwaukee Succeeds Cradle to Career” is working to reverse that trend and has declared October to be FAFSA Frenzy month. In previous years, the start date for accepting completed FAFSA applications was January. This year it has been changed to October and the coalition is working to encourage more high school seniors to apply and to apply early. Milwaukee Succeeds is a community-wide, educational partnership and an initiative of the Greater Milwaukee Foundation. A completed FAFSA application is necessary in order to qualify for federal, state and institutional aid. Students are more likely to enroll in www.milwaukeetimesnews.com

The effort is dedicated to increasing the number of Milwaukee high school students who apply for free federal college grants. a college or career school if they complete the FAFSA. Students who file early for financial aid receive on average more than twice the funding from federal, state and col-

lege sources than those who file later. Milwaukee Succeeds is supporting a community goal for the class of 2017 to increase the FAFSA comple-

tion rate to 60 percent of all enrolled Milwaukee Public School high school seniors, which would represent a 20 percent increase from the June 2015 benchmark. For

Five ways to motivate your kids to brush By Leann Hart Are your children refusing to brush their teeth? Do they take one look at the toothbrush and try to make a run for it? Motivating your kids to brush their teeth can be a challenge. Even 2 minutes of lost playtime can seem like a major sacrifice to your youngster. If your child absolutely hates to brush their teeth, here are 5 ways you can make toothbrushing fun and encourage healthy dental habits: 1. Let your kids pick their toothbrush and toothpaste Make toothbrushing fun by letting your children pick their toothbrush and toothpaste! There are so many colorful toothbrushes and kinds of toothpastes to choose from. Your child can pick a toothbrush featuring their favorite cartoon character, a Disney princess, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or whatever catches their eye.

Toothpaste flavors designed to appeal to children also make oral care more exciting. Children’s toothpaste comes in a variety of yummy flavors, including bubblegum, chocolate and strawberry. With a range of kid-friendly toothpaste available, your child is bound to find a flavor they like. They might even look forward to using up their current toothpaste, so they can try out a new crazy flavor.

A fun toothbrush and toothpaste of their choosing will help motivate your children to brush their teeth and keep their mouths healthy. They’ll be more tempted to use a toothbrush and toothpaste they selected and that they know they like. 2. Have your kids brush their teeth to a song No one ever said you have to brush your teeth in absolute silence. If your child resists your efforts to get them to brush, play an upbeat song

so your child can dance while brushing. Playing music will make toothbrushing seem like less of a chore. Also, having your children brush their teeth to a song will encourage them to brush for the correct amount of time. Dentists recommend brushing for at least 2 minutes. Listening to a song will help make the time fly by! Your kids will have a blast, and they’ll be done brushing their teeth before they know it. 3. Turn toothbrushing into a game Children love to play games. So, why not turn toothbrushing into a game for your kids? You could make up a story about why your children have to brush their teeth. You could tell them their toothbrush turns them into a superhero that can fight off plaque monsters. Use your imagination and get them excited about taking care of their teeth. 4. Create a reward system Sometimes your kids just

need a little incentive to brush their teeth. Try creating a reward system to help make the process easier. You could create a sticker chart, and have your child pick a sticker after they brush their teeth and place it on the chart. Or you could give them a prize after they’ve brushed their teeth twice a day for a month. The prospect of a reward could convince your kids to cooperate. 5. Make toothbrushing a group activity If nothing else works, try brushing your teeth with them. Young kids love to imitate their parents’ behavior. You’ll show them that you take your dental health seriously, and they should too. Plus, it will serve as a bonding experience. It only takes 2 minutes to brush teeth, but that 2 minutes can become an hour or longer when a child refuses to comply. Keep these tips in mind and try to make toothbrushing fun.

Black women have higher breast cancer death rate in 42 out of 43 cities, new study finds en,” so deaths among White women decreased, said study researcher Bijou Hunt, an epidemiologist at the Sinai Urban Health Institute in Chicago. “Black women were not getting the same access to resources, so their rates stayed the same or got worse,” addBreast cancer deaths are increasing for Black women, researchers say. In a new study released just in time for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, investigators reveal a shocking link between the most common form of cancer found in women and their geographical location. According to the Avon Foundation funded study, which examined breast cancer deaths between 2010 and 2014 in 43 of the most populated U.S. cities, African American women were nearly half – 43 percent– as likely to die from breast cancer than White women. Even more shocking, in 2006, findings noted a difference of only 39.7 percent. Dr. Sheryl Grabam, Director of the AVON Comprehensive Breast Center, believes too many Black women are being diagnosed later when the cancer is harder to treat, according to a Fox5 Atlanta report. In 2013, 230,815 women and 2,109 men in the United States were diagnosed with breast cancer. While, 40,860 women and 464 men in the United States died from breast cancer, reports the CDC. So, which U.S. cities topped the list with the largest breast cancer death disparities? •Atlanta – where Black

women have a higher mortality rate from breast cancer, at a rate more than double that of White women. •Austin, TX •Wichita, KS •San Antonio, TX •Kansas City, MO •Dallas, TX •Memphis, TN •Los Angeles, CA •Oklahoma City. OK •Chicago, IL Meanwhile, the report also noted that in cities like Boston, Memphis, and Philly, both Black and White women are falling victim to the cancerous disease at a similar rate — significantly narrowing the gap. As for the purpose behind the findings, Cheryl Heinonen, president of the Avon Foundation said, “My hope is that as people look at this data and see these numbers, they understand we need to make sure we are ending breast cancer for every woman, not just some women, and I hope it is a call to action in many of these communities.” Though the reason behind the gap is still unknown, one researcher believes a lack of access to quality health care plays a major role in the startling disparities. Advances in mammography and in treatments “were disproportionately available to white wom-

ed Hunt. So what’s next? In addition to focus groups held weekly in cities like Atlanta at Emory University and Morehouse College, Hulbert argued that a solution “has to involve all the hospitals, imaging facilities, and private practices across a city to make a differ-

ence.” In the meantime, you can take control of your own health, by getting regular mammograms and never be fearful to ask questions. Women have a better chance of surviving breast cancer when diagnosed early.

Healthy teeth mean healthier bodies. Brush daily. Covering you. Covering your kids.

Review: ‘The Royale’ lands a punch for social justice By Jacquelyn D. Heath Special to the Milwaukee Times Imagine that you are the best at what you do. Everyone knows this, but you’re not allowed to compete in the big leagues – because of your race. If you were African American in the early 1900’s during the height of this country’s Jim Crow era, race was a legal and well as de facto barrier in American society. Overcoming that barrier and the possible cost of standing up for social justice is the subject of The Royale, a riveting 90-minute play now staging at the Milwaukee Repertory Theater’s Stiemke Studio. Playwright Marco Ramirez borrowed a true page from history as he fashioned his main character, Jay ‘The Sport’ Jackson, after Jack Johnson, the first African American world heavyweight boxing champion who shattered the color barrier in professional sports by defeating former (white) world heavyweight champion Jim Jeffries. Like Johnson, Jay Jackson is brash, flamboyant, and undeniably powerful in the ring. His professional boxing career, however, has

progressed only so far as the Negro Champion of Boxing. Max, a shady boxing promoter, hatches the idea of staging “the fight of the century,” bringing white reigning heavyweight champion Bernard Bixby out of retirement to face Jackson for the world heavyweight title. The prospect of such a matchup would bring with it unparalleled fame and economic gain. But not everyone is all that in favor of the bout. Whites fear that by fighting Jackson, Bixby will “disgrace his legacy.” Blacks dream of a Jackson victory, but also fear white backlash – namely, race riots and lynchings – if Jackson wins the fight. Black fears were not unfounded. In Jim Crow America, it was illegal for blacks and whites to socialize, because it would have signified that blacks were equal to whites. Blacks could not show affection toward each other in public, further cementing the notion among whites that blacks were sub-human. As Jay prepares for his historic bout, we are introduced to his somewhat protective manager/trainer Wynton; and Fish, a young aspiring

wrists – broken ribs. Ask me, they got what they deserved; fightin’ over a fight, fightin’ over you. But this morning, they found two of ‘em, hands cut off, strung up to a streetlight…I need to tell you which two?” Jay remains resolute and goes through with the fight. However exhilarating the victory, the specter of the tragedy that follows is all too real, and hits too close to home. The Royale packs a powerful punch, thanks to the brilliantly tight writing of author Marco Ramirez. Director Kevin Ramsey choreographed the action while putting the audience in touch with the players’ inner battles, stream-of-consciousness style. Skillful lighting and rhythmic clapping and stomping are offered by lighting designer Thomas Weaver and sound designer Josh Schmidt to simulate and punctuate the action in the ring.
