African Diaspora Council's '6th Annual School Supply Drive
This year the African Diaspora Council (ADC) held its "6th Annual School Supply Drive," and they are very excited to continue this wonderful community initiative with their adopted school, Lafollette Ele mentary located at 3239 N. 9th Street. The students
who attend this school often do so without having the tools students desperately need to return to learn ing and to ensure they have another successful school year. As ADC geared up for its "6th Annual School Supply Drive," they knew how the inflation crisis is
affecting everyone, so the need to assist these stu dents, parents, and teach ers was even greater. The ADC collection drop-offs were held on the UWM campus at five locations from September 7th to October 5th. They pro vided several cash apps for monetary donationsfor those who preferred to contribute electroni cally, as well as a tax do nation link at give.uwm. edu/ ADCFUND.

Ketanji Brown Jackson begins historic career as Supreme Court Justice
After her historic appoint ment earlier this year, Su preme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, on Monday, October 3, 2022, started her trailblazing career as the first black woman to serve on the nation’s highest court.
In her black robe, Jackson took the seat on the far end of the bench, in keeping with the High Court’s traditional seating, based on seniority.
On her first day as Su preme Court Justice, Jackson was vocal with her opinions as the court reviewed the first legal case of the fall session. The case concerned a major environmental dispute over the federal government’s reach in protecting the na tion’s waterways under the Clean Water Act.
Jackson, along with the other Justices, posed ques tions to the lawyers who ar gued the dispute between the Environmental Protection Agency and Idaho landown ers.
The landowners want the court to limit the govern ment’s authority over wet lands to encompass only those with a visible surface connection to U.S. waters.
During her questioning, Jackson said, “You say the question is which wetlands
The Supreme Court held a special sitting on September 30, 2022, for the formal investiture ceremony of Associ ate Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson (center). President Joe Biden (left), First Lady Jill Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris (right), and Second Gentleman Douglas Emhoff attended as guests of the court.
are covered, which I agree with,” she told a lawyer for the property owners. “But I guess my question is, why would Congress draw the coverage line between abut ting wetlands and neighbor ing wetlands when the objec tive of the statute is to ensure the chemical, physical and biological integrity of the na tion’s waters?”
Later, Jackson polite ly apologized for asking a
follow-up question after a lengthy back-and-forth con versation with a lawyer for Idaho landowners Chantell and Mike Sackett, who want to build on a property the government has deemed to be a wetland.
Jackson’s line of question ing was like the court’s two other liberal Justices, Elena Kagan and Sonia Sotomayor.
A former public defender who served as judge in two
federal courts in Washington, DC, Jackson was appointed by President Joe Biden be fore she was sworn in during a historic ceremony June 30.
She fills the seat vacated by Justice Stephen Breyer, for whom she once clerked as a Harvard Law School gradu ate.
On September 30, Jackson participated in her investiture ceremony that was attended by President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.
The event was largely cere monial, but Jackson’s historic role gave the investiture spe cial significance. Members of the press were not allowed to record video or audio, but photographs of the event were provided by the court.
Other guests who attend ed the short ceremony were Jackson’s parents, her broth er, husband and two daugh ters. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi also attended.
U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland, who was nominated to the Supreme Court in 2016 by President Barack Obama before Senate Republicans refused to hold his confirmation hearings, was also present and played a role in Jackson’s investiture ceremony.
During the ceremony, Jack son sat in front of the bench in a chair that had been used by Chief Justice John Mar shall.
Jackson promised to “ad minister justice without re spect to persons and do equal right to the poor and to the rich.”
Supreme Court Chief Jus tice John Roberts, Jr., wished his new colleague “a long and happy career in our common calling.” The ceremony lasted only a few minutes.
Roberts and Jackson then walked down the front steps of the courthouse, chatting out of earshot as photogra phers captured the scene. Her husband, Dr. Patrick G. Jackson, joined them at the base of the steps of the Su preme Court Building.
During his presidential campaign, President Biden promised to nominate a qualified black woman to the Supreme Court, which had not had one in its 232-year history.
Biden appointed Jackson to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia after she served as a federal judge for the U.S. District Court for the District of Co lumbia.

Break the chains
The role of African Amer icans in the USA seems to have come full circle. Afri can Americans came to this country in bondage more than 500 years ago. In 2022 some of the chains hold ing African Americans have changed. Yet, there are many old chains that are restricting African American growth on all levels. It is time for Af rican Americans to identify and break these chains to survive and thrive.
The original chains were iron and were locked around African American necks and legs as they were brought to the USA. These chains are still around a large num ber of African Americans who are in the penal system. These chains will be hard to break because the African American youth are being programmed to make bad decisions. The influencing factor on youth is the music they listen to that glorifies “street life.” The modern day slave chains via the penal sys tem lead us to more insidious chains, the chains on the Af rican American mind.
The programming of the African American mind has created chains that have led to a form of retardation. The media has played a role in the strengthening of the mental binding of African Ameri cans. African Americans are bombarded by media that stresses them to do anything and everything. African Americans are being manip ulated to believe they need everything from new cars to anti-depressant drugs from the media. This constant mental attack has created a lethargy in African American minds to become consumers instead of producers. The chains of consumerism are wound so tightly around Af rican Americans that they are being driven insane.
The education system in the USA has reinforced the chains of inferiority on Afri can Americans. In 2022 Af rican American children are still being mentally chained by an education system that is white propaganda. The education African American children receive is not in their best interests. The education the African American child receives is one that makes them a better tool for the racist system of oppression in the USA. No matter what subject is being taught the glorification of white people is extolled. The chains that an education against ones self creates, seriously hinder mental development. The lack of mental development in the African American
community will only lead to destruction.
Sports has created chains that have warped any form of mental growth in the African American community. The goal of many African Amer icans is to play some form of pro sports. There is no way to look at pro athletes as any thing but high-priced slaves. The mental chains that edu cation and media have placed on African Americans pre vents them from seeing this. Look at the various sports and the drafts they hold. They draft a strong African American male and he steps up on the block waving a jer sey grinning. How does this differ from the prize buck in slavery? The answer is mon ey and prestige. Which leads us to the final chain on Afri can Americans.
Money has chained African Americans to their oppres sors. African Americans have come to the point where they will do anything for white people’s money. There is no need to go into detail to ex plain this sad phenomenon. I challenge you to look at the
internet or TV. Look at the roles African Americans play or the acts they do for likes or c-notes. If you do not see the chain that is squeezing Afri can Americans like a python, then so be it.
African Americans, wake up and at least notice the chains that you carry in the USA. It may be hard to break some because of the familiarity and comfort of these chains. African Ameri cans remember this, “A chain is still chain, even if it is plat inum.”

High school seniors should begin the process of applying for financial aid for college and technical schools soon. The first step is to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This application shows students their eligibility for grants and loans, and is used by colleges across the country to develop each student’s financial aid package.
Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS), along with Milwau kee Area Technical College and the University of Wis consin–Milwaukee, hosted a kickoff event on October 4 to help draw attention to this important step on the journey to higher education. These three organizations, collec tively known as M-Cubed, are working to streamline the pathway from high school to college so MPS students have access to resources that will help them succeed after graduation, including col lege credits earned while still in high school. Helping stu dents complete the FAFSA is a priority for M-Cubed so students can access available financial support.
To help more students ac cess grants and loans for col lege, MPS has updated its graduation requirements to include completion of the FAFSA. Beginning with the Class of 2023, high school seniors will be required to fill

out the FAFSA. Some excep tions will apply.
MPS has College and Career Centers in 21 high schools to help students fill out the FAFSA, explore col leges, write essays, and com plete college applications. Hours vary by school. MPS students can contact any College and Career Center to get the help they need from a college and career advisor. For more information about College and Career Center locations, hours, and ser vices, visit the MPS College

FAFSA for the 2023–24 school year opened on Oc tober 1, and more money is sometimes available to ear ly applicants. Students who wish to fill out the FAFSA should visit https://studen taid.gov/. Applicants are cau tioned to use only this web site and to avoid any websites that charge a fee.

Diagnosed with breast cancer at 27: “It felt like a nightmare”
When you are in your 20s and 30s, you have your whole life ahead of you.
During this time, most women are starting their ca reers and starting families. But what happens when you get an unexpected diagnosis that rocks your world?
Entrepreneur Diamo nique Valentine was 27 when she first shared her breast cancer diagnosis on Instagram in 2019.
Her diagnosis was stage 3 triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), an aggressive form of breast cancer because of how quickly it grows, ac cording to the American Cancer Society.
She decided to go to the doctor after finding a lump on her breast, but admits that she never thought hav ing cancer could happen to her.
“That moment I was diag nosed it was like, ‘You have cancer. OK, you’re gonna die,'” Valentine shared.
“It just seemed unreal,” Valentine told CBS News. “It felt like a nightmare.”
With the support of her husband, Marcus, Valentine
underwent 16 rounds of chemotherapy and a double mastectomy.
“Being there to sup port her has been one of the most amazing, biggest blessings that we’ve had, because a lot of people don’t have that,” Marcus Valentine shared at the time.
Breast cancer in women under 40 Black women un der 40 are more likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer than white women, accord ing to a study published in the Journal of Surgical Re search
When cancer is found in young women, it is typically more aggressive and more difficult to treat, according to Dr. Margaret Thompson, a doctor in breast services at Cleveland Clinic Florida.
“In younger age women, the biology of the tumor tends to present with more aggressive features, com pared to postmenopausal women,” Thompson said.
Unfortunately, women under 40 don’t fall in the
recommended age of wom en that should receive a mammogram.
The American Cancer Society recommends that women ages 50 to 54 should have annual mammography exams and women over 55 should be screened every two years or once a year.
Even when women un der 40 are able to receive a mammogram, the results may not always be accurate.
Breast cancer is more dif ficult to spot in younger women because their breast tissue tends to be dense. This makes it hard for tumors
to be spotted even on mammograms causing many women to be mis diagnosed, according to the Cleveland Clinic.
“I wish that I would have advocated a little bit more and was a lit tle bit more diligent in finding someone who would screen me with no insurance,” Valentine added.
Fortunately, Valentine is now cancer free and looking forward to the next years of her life, which includes being a mom to her son Mali, who was born in May.
“He’s everything that me and my family needed. He is like the reward after the storm,” she said adding that she knew she wanted to be a mother and she and her husband were hoping for the best. “Nothing makes me more grateful.”
She’s also focused on rais ing awareness on the im portance of self-exams, es pecially for young women who may not be aware of their risks.
How to perform breast self-exams
Examining your breasts should be done in 5 steps:
Step 1: Examine your breasts in a mirror with your hands on your hips
Step 2: Raise your arms and examine your breasts
Step 3: Look for signs of breast fluid
Step 4: Feel for breast lumps while lying down
Step 5: Feel your breasts for Lumps while standing or sitting
Here’s what you should look for:
• Breasts that are their usual size, shape, and color
• Breasts that are evenly shaped without visible distortion or swelling
If you see any of the follow ing changes, you should see a doctor: dimpling, pucker ing, or bulging of the skin; a nipple that has changed po sition, or an inverted nipple (pushed inward instead of sticking out); redness; sore ness; rash, or swelling.

Equity is .possible
No room for racism in health care
We are used to treating people who are in pain. And, when we do, we look at both causes and symptoms. We care for the whole person — that’s why we continue to do our part to treat racism as a health crisis. We set goals and measure our progress to hold ourselves accountable. For example, we’re working to close the care gap for breast cancer screening in our Black, Indigenous and people of color (BIPOC) patient populations.
We’re proud to share that year-over-year, we increased the percentage of breast cancer screenings in BIPOC patient populations from 67.45% to 71.53%. This helps to close the gap between BIPOC and non-BIPOC patient populations.
Through our efforts, we will help eradicate racism in health care. We continue to examine our biases and always evaluate our policies and practices to deliver culturally and linguistically equitable care.
