20th anniversary of the Million Man March draws thousands from all walks of life

On Saturday, October 10, 2015 Minister Louis Farrakhan called for an end to police violence against African Americans and demanded a halt to black-on-black crime, which kills more inner-city men than all other causes combined.

The Nation of Islam leader used the occasion of the 20th anniversary commemoration of the Million Man March at the steps of the U.S. Capitol to condemn the loss of life among blacks. In his two-hour, 20-minute address, Farrakhan cited from

the Bible and the Quran, discussed the history of white supremacy, and fired salvos at what he dubbed so-called leaders who will sell out for money. “Our war is on two fronts,” he said. “The inner-city and police wickedness. Preach-

ers, you’re the most important. Take Dr. Martin Luther King’s philosophy of nonviolence and redirect it to black people. We have to teach to love one another and to love your neighbor.” Farrakhan’s message, delivered under a pale blue

sky with streaks of billowy clouds, was, at times, pointed. “It’s hypocritical to say we’re citizens when we’re denied civil rights. . .human rights,” he said. (Continued on pg. 2)

Ms. Viola Hawkins was honored on Monday, October 12, 2015 by Wisconsin Alliance for Retired Americans (WIARA) at the Italian Community Center located in Milwaukee’s Third Ward. WIARA is a non-profit senior organization with more than 100,000 members, dedicated to educating and advocating for older Americans. This year they are celebrating ten years of advocacy. Hawkins has been a long-time community activist and an advocate for seniors. Hawkins received this honor on her birthday. President Mike Pyne of WIARA presented a plaque to Ms. Hawkins and remarks about her community service. More than four hundred seniors attended the luncheon. www.milwaukeetimesnews.com

The seventieth birthday of Dr. Wallace McClain Cheatham was celebrated at St. Mark AME Church, 1616 W. Atkinson Ave., on Oct. 4, featuring Cheatham, soprano Cecilia Davis, and the New Jubilee Community Choir in a musical performance. The concert opened with a group of pieces that showcased Cheatham playing St. Mark’s pipe organ. Five spirituals, composed by Cheatham in 1991, were beautifully sung by soprano Cecilia Davis with the composer at the piano. The New Jubilee Community Choir, conducted by Cheatham, brought the concert to a powerful conclusion with the music of Andre Thomas and Richard Smallwood. In lieu of gifts, donations were given to St. Mark’s Katherine M. Dale Music Scholarship. Pictured (standing, from left) are: St. Mark AME Church Pastor Darryl Williams, Dr. Wallace Cheatham, and Kimberly Cheatham; and (seated, from left) Dr. Cheatham's mother, Mrs. Frances Cheatham and his wife, Faye Cheatham.

Crouther family celebrates birthday by giving gifts to those in need

On Saturday, September 19, 2015, David Crouther, Jr., and Trinity Crouther celebrated their 7th birthday by hosting a “Making A Difference” (M.A.D.) party. The twins and more than a dozen of their friends gathered to make PBJ sandwiches and lunch bags for Joy House. Joy House is a program of the Milwaukee Rescue Mission that provides food, shelter, and assistance to homeless mothers and their children. The party goers decorated over 100 lunch bags and filled them with the PBJ sandwiches they made, along with fresh apples and a juice box. In keeping with the spirit of giving back, they requested that in lieu of gifts, participants bring much- needed personal items for the residents of Joy House. In addition to the bagged lunches, the family also delivered boxes full of deodorant, lotion, powder, toothpaste, wipes, and paper products to Joy House. The participants had fun making the sandwiches, decorating the lunch bags, and filling them. And (their parents hope) they also learned a valuable lesson on being thankful for what they have and the importance of giving to those less fortunate. Parents Stacy and David Crouther, Sr., are certainly proud of David Jr., and Trinity for their willingness and Photo By Crouthers' Family desire to break away from the traditional cake-and-icecream, gift-receiving celebration. "Not only have they directly helped families in need; but we truly believe they inspired other parents and their children to consider making their next celebration a M.A.D. one," said David and Trinity's parents in a press release.

Million Man March (Continued from pg. 1) At another point, the 82-yearold who organized the 1995 Million Man March that was dubbed “A Day of Atonement” asked, “What good is life if there is no freedom? What good is life if you see people suffering in tyranny? …What good are we if we don’t prepare our young people to carry the torch of liberation? We will not forsake our duties.”

He called on “honest” leadership to be at the forefront of influencing change. “It grieves me that many are willing to take a little money to upgrade their cars, to upgrade their suits, to upgrade their shoes,” he said about black leaders. “All corruption is an enemy to the progression of many.” Many of his points were received with uproarious approval. Among the thousands who descended on Washington—a crowd that was much younger than that of 20 years ago and with

more women—was Dorothy Hill of Buffalo, NY. At 80, she jumped into her car and drove 401 miles to Washington, DC, to hear Farrakhan and to feel the spirit of the occasion. Hill’s seven-hour drive reflected her and many African Americans across the country, desperation for change amid recent, high-profile deaths of black males, either at the hands of or in police custody. Beneath the banner “Justice or Else,” this march appeared different from the

Despite talk of unity and brotherhood, Saturday’s tone, under the banner of “Justice or Else,” was decidedly more aggressive than at the original gathering. Speaker after speaker demanded that law enforcement be held accountable for what they called unruly and deadly actions against blacks.

Hill said she would drive back to Buffalo feeling replenished from her experience and hopeful for change. “There’s a lot to be done, and I hope all the change that was talked about becomes reality,” she said. “It was a powerful day just to be here. Everyone felt like family. I’m glad I came. I can go home knowing I was a part of something very special.”

Northwestern Mutual exceeds minority and local resident hiring goals By Steve Waring Special to The Milwaukee Times (Part two of a three-part series) During the first quarter of 2015, Northwestern Mutual exceeded agreements it made to hire more minorities and steer more sub-contracting jobs to local businesses, according to an independent report recently released by the City of Milwaukee. The report was compiled by Prism Technical Management & Marketing Services, LLC. It indicates that through March 31, 2015 Northwestern Mutual had paid Small Business Enterprises (SBEs) $98.7 million in contracts. Northwestern had committed to spending at least 25 percent on SBEs. The funds spent account for 29.6 percent of the total value of applicable construction and service contracts. The data on the hiring Resident Preference Program (RPE) report indicates that 213 Milwaukee residents were hired. Of that number 64 residents came from socalled Central City zip code areas which have some of the highest unemployment levels in the state. “We’ve embraced the com-

mitments we made to the city of Milwaukee. We wanted to reinvest in our community by growing our own workforce in Milwaukee and also by creating opportunities for small businesses and residents during the construction of the project,” said Northwestern Mutual Vice President and Project Leader Sandy Botcher,” in a report published on the Northwestern Mutual Internet website. Construction work is considered a skilled trade and hours completed on a job are an important means to achieve seniority and a better chance of being hired for the next project. On October 5 Northwestern Mutual announced that it would break ground on a 33-story development next to its downtown campus. The 33-story tower will feature luxury apartments, retail space and eight stories of parking. The entire project is estimated at more than $100 million and will be built on property the company already owns on the block bounded by North Van Buren, East Mason and East Wells streets. Demolition of the buildings currently on the site will begin in January with construction expected to begin

in March. With construction expected to begin soon on a new $500 million arena for the Milwaukee Bucks basketball team and several other Milwaukee construction projects underway, most likely there will a need to train additional residents to fill the demand. “Northwestern Mutual believes more strongly than ever in Milwaukee and the vibrancy of our city,” said Northwestern Mutual Vice President and head of Northwestern Mutual Real Estate Tom Zale. “We’re creating a destination for future residents looking to live, work and play in the heart of an exciting city while providing convenient parking for our growing employee base.” The company has been helping local residents get training and apprenticeship hours in an innovative project which leased space at the Century City development site located on property formerly owned by A.O. Smith, in order to construct steel panels which are later transported and installed at the Northwestern Mutual Tower and Commons project.

Northwestern Mutual Tower and Commons is on schedule and continuously getting taller each week. This project’s fiscal impact will have a ripple effect on the local economy. Local business executive Cory Nettles joins the Bucks By Steve Waring Special to The Milwaukee Times (Part one of a two-part series) Founder and Managing Director of Generation Growth Capital Inc. Cory L. Nettles believes in serendipity. So when he heard Wes Edens, one of the two principle owners of the Bucks, tell a corporate board on which Nettles sits that the team wanted to be a good steward of Milwaukee, he had an inspiration of becoming a minority owner. The idea first came to Nettles in 2007 shortly after Senator Herb Kohl had already agreed to sell the Bucks to New York-based Wes Edens and Marc Lasry, according to Nettles who said he attended a board meeting where Lasry spoke passionately about his desire for the Bucks to be a successful franchise while remaining in Milwaukee. Shortly after the meeting broke up Nettles was talking with another board member and friend, Atty. John Daniels. The two men agreed that they ought to create a group and put together a proposal. “John and I thought it would be both symbolic and noteworthy if a group of African Americans were to do that,” he said. “We could have done it individually; we thought there might be some power in coming together as a group and doing it.” Nettles agreed to reach out to five other families www.milwaukeetimesnews.com

and see if they would be interested. The group was named Partners for Community Impact. He approached five other African American families with connections to Milwaukee. All five said yes. The partnership consists of Cory and Michelle Nettles; Michael and Jackie Barber; Valerie Daniels Carter; Virgis and Angela Colbert; and Charles and Cheryl Hardy. “Not all of them knew each other, but John and I had successful relationships with each of them,” Nettles said. “John did not participate personally because he was the chair of the Greater Milwaukee Committee (GMC) and the GMC was very involved from a policy perspective in the whole conversation and John didn’t want anyone ever to suggest that he had a conflict of interest. His sister, Valerie, chose to invest, but he has no interest in the team.” Nettles said that the National Basketball Association has a very “extensive screening and vetting process for each individual who invests in the team and you don’t fully know what the standards and requirements are. They have both a net worth requirement and what I would describe as a character and fitness requirement.” Each individual had to apply and be vetted. “It’s a club,” Nettles said, “and I have known them to say no; not to anyone of our investors, but nationally. Going round in circles It has been over 40 years, when in 1972, Billy Preston recorded a single entitled “Will It Go Round in Circles” on his album “Music is My Life.” The song became number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for two weeks and sold over a million copies. Preston was considered a virtuoso keyboardist on a Hammond organ and recognized as a top session musician in the 1960s. During this time he played and recorded with some of the greatest musical artists of his era, including Little Richard, Sam Cooke, Ray Charles and the Beatles. The song was very popular among those of us in high school or college during that time. And if you loved to be on the dance floor, it was one

of your best grooves, for it got you moving to the beat. Unlike today’s music, the song was easy to sing along with because of its carefree melody and lyrics. Similarly, this song was reflective of other songs of the early 1970s and came out while the Vietnam War was still going on, drug use was on the rise, poverty was growing, public housing was booming, and social unrest and injustice were still commonplace. Nevertheless, it was a song that gave us something to think about in an abstract kind of way. It resonated with a lot of people because of its unique meaning of progress and opened up our thinking about life and how to see things. However, this

And when we think of where we are today... many of our parents and grandparents were marching in the 1960s and 70s for equal rights, respect, a better way of life, future opportunities and the America Dream, and guess what? We are still marching today... Go figure! It seems that if we have not learned anything from our past then our forward progress is even harder to measure. Amazingly, all the work done by our ancestors toward progress continues in our struggle as well. “Will it go round in circles?” is still the question. What do you think?

What exactly do we mean when we put these two words together? How do we identify Kindness and how do we show we actually Love kindness? In this case Love is a verb which requires specific action. So, as we begin this column let us realize that merely admiring or acknowledging acts of kindness is not what we are suggesting. If we want to make a lasting difference in our lives, our families and our community we need to admit that how we treat others is the most important thing we do. Just consider the many awards and publicity we give to praise athletic, academic, physical, artistic and financial success. As a result, our role models may not be people of true character. Yet, every day throughout greater Milwaukee, people are doing acts of kindness that go unacknowledged. Let’s begin to identify kindness as being at least as important as a winning touchdown. How can we do this? This column will be your way of identifying those who have been

The Counseling Corner By Rev. Judith T. Lester, B.Min. M.Th

October - Intimate Partner Violence Awareness (Part 1) Intimate partner violence (historically called "domestic violence"), describes physical, sexual, or psychological harm by a current or former intimate partner or spouse. This type of violence can occur among heterosexual or same-sex couples. According to the National Institute of Justice, violence by an intimate partner is linked to both immediate and longterm health, social, and economic consequences. Factors at all levels—individual, relationship, community, and societal contribute to intimate partner violence. Types of intimate partner violence The Center for Disease Control’s National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, which spotlights injury and violence prevention topics, defines 5 types of intimate partner violence: Physical violence is the intentional use of physical force with the potential for causing death, disability, injury, or physical harm. Sexual violence can be divided into three categories: (1) the use of physical force to compel a person to engage in a sexual act un-

willingly, whether or not the act is completed; (2) an attempted or completed sexual act involving a person who, because of illness, disability, or the influence of alcohol or other drugs, or because of intimidation or pressure, is unable to understand the nature or condition of the act, decline participation, or communicate unwillingness to engage in the act; and (3) abusive sexual contact. Threats of physical or sexual violence communicate the intent to cause death, disability, injury, or physical harm through the use of words, gestures, or weapons. P s yc h o l og i c a l / e m o tional violence traumatizes the victim by acts, threats of

acts, or coercive tactics. In most cases, emotional violence has been preceded by acts or threats of physical or sexual violence. Stalking generally refers to harassing or threatening behavior that an individual engages in repeatedly, such as sending the victim unwanted presents; following or lying in wait for the victim; damaging or threatening to damage the victim's property; appearing at a victim's home or place of business; defaming the victim's character or spreading rumors; or harassing the victim via the Internet by posting personal information. If you know of someone who is a victim of abuse, please encourage

them to seek help immediately. Beloved, according to the Centers for Disease Control, 31 percent of women in the U.S. have been physically abused by an intimate partner at some point in their lives. In addition to experiencing physical abuse by a partner, an estimated 22.3 percent of women and 14 percent of men have experienced severe physical violence at the hand of an intimate partner. Among the most common types of severe violence women experienced by an intimate partner is being slammed against something and being hit with a fist or hard object. (Source: National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey, September 2014). The startling facts speak for themselves. We must continue to raise awareness that abuse in any form cannot and must not be tolerated. One way you can help raise awareness is to get political by working to change current policy by influencing lawmakers to pass additional laws and impose higher penalties against domestic/intimate partner violence. The bottom line is

the ubiquitous problem of domestic/intimate partner violence demands the entire community become involved to help prevent and control the violence. The seventieth birthday of Dr. Wallace McClain Cheatham (left) was celebrated at St. Mark AME Church, 1616 W. Atkinson Ave., on Oct. 4, featuring Cheatham, soprano Cecilia Davis (right), and the New Jubilee Community Choir in a musical performance. The concert opened with a group of pieces that showcased Cheatham playing St. Mark’s pipe organ. Five spirituals, composed by Cheatham in 1991, were beautifully sung by soprano Cecilia Davis with the composer at the piano.

Nutritious meals help steer students toward successful outcomes Chicken nuggets and pizza may not seem like healthy food choices; but in Milwaukee Public Schools lunchrooms, staff with the Department of School Nutrition work diligently to make sure these items will have the nutrients growing children need. “What we try to do is make food children are familiar with healthier,” said Barbara Rodriguez Graf, a supervising dietitian with the MPS Department of School Nutrition. This ties into National School Lunch Week, which is October 12-16 and celebrates the National School

Lunch Program. In the case of chicken nuggets, those served at MPS will contain more protein than similar options found at a fast-food restaurant, Rodriguez Graf said. Pizza served at MPS also will be made with a whole grain crust and other low-fat ingredients. “Our focus is to make all of our food we serve as nutritious and appealing as possible for students,” Rodriguez Graf said. All meals served to students are balanced to ensure they are receiving appropriate levels of nutrition. “Studies show that eating

healthy doesn’t just impact quate amounts of milk and academic performance but protein contribute to healthy a child’s overall well-being,” bone and muscle growth. Rodriguez Graf said. AdeMilwaukee Public Schools

provides breakfast and lunch to all students regardless of income. During a typical school year, MPS serves about 5.4 million breakfasts and 8.9 million lunches. Providing students with high-quality, nutritious meals contributes to educating the whole child, which is part of the district’s Eight Big Ideas to improve student outcomes. A child who enters school healthy and feels safe will be more engaged in school and more likely to stay in school.

MATC and AAA partner on safe driving campaign

Students encouraged to avoid distractions behind the wheel that could jeopardize their goals Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC) is teaming up with AAA Wisconsin and the Auto Club Group Traffic Safety Foundation to discourage distracted driving by students. Events will be held at each of MATC’s campuses throughout October. "We are pleased to partner with AAA Wisconsin and the Auto Club Group Traffic Safety Foundation to highlight the dangers of distracted driving," said Archie Graham, MATC director of student life. "It is important that people realize how easily a simple action like reading a text or checking the internet while driving could have tragic consequences." At each campus, students will have the opportunity to experience the effects of distraction during a virtual drive on the AAA/ACGFTS simulators. They also will have the opportunity to win a $50 gas card by writing down a personal goal which might not be realized if they get into a distracted driving crash, and then posting a “safety selfie” on social media using the tag #MATCisFocused. A recent study by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety found that drivers ages 19-39 are significantly more likely to use their phones behind the wheel than any other age group. Forty-three percent report typing text messages or emails, compared with fewer than 30 percent for any other age group. In addition, more than a quarter of drivers in this group report using the internet behind the wheel, compared to fewer than seventeen percent 17 percent for other groups. “Distracted driving is dangerous driving,” said Victoria Hanson, regional president for AAA Wisconsin. “It is critical for young adults –

who will be setting the example for the next generation of drivers – to recognize the risks and develop safe habits behind the wheel.” Representatives from AAA, working with MATC’s Office of Student Life and MATC’s

student government, have already visited the Oak Creek Campus with this message. They will take it to the college’s other two campuses as follows:

• Tuesday, Oct. 20 – 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. – West Allis Campus cafeteria, 1200 South 71st St. • Tuesday, Oct. 27– 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.– Mequon Campus cafeteria, 5555 West Highland Road.

Milwaukee Times Weekly Newspaper

By Nicole Angresano Vice President, Community Impact, United Way of Greater Milwaukee & Waukesha County

Parents should be primary sexual health educators for children United Way offers resources to make having “the talk” easier

It’s that time again. No, not Packers season—although that’s awesome. October is Let’s Talk Month, an annual “push” for parents to increase their skills and will around being their children’s first and primary sexual health educators. I know— that’s not as easy as I make it sound. I get it-–I’m a parent, too. This can be difficult stuff to talk about, even for those of us who talk about it professionally. But it’s so very, very important. Now some of you may think you’ve already had a talk, “the” talk, even. But one talk isn’t going to cut it. You need to talk to your children many, many times, over many, many years about all sorts of things. One of the things I’ve learned over the years is that even the best-meaning parents have trouble having such conversations, often because no

one had it with them, and because they don’t know all the answers. Body parts have different names these days— there are abbreviations and codes that weren’t around 25 years ago—and don’t even get me started about “twerking.” The good news is that there are tons of resources to help you. I am going to share some ideas with you, and provide a list of resources that will help you get the party started, so to speak. In particular, the questions teens have for parents are of three types: • Knowledge or information • Values or what is right • Is this normal? Knowledge questions (such as “What is a condom?”) can be some of the easier types of questions for many parents to address. If you don’t know the answer,

it’s an opportunity to find the answer together with your teen. Values questions (such as, “Is it OK to have sex before marriage?”) indicate teens are trying to figure out what they believe in, their own values, and what’s right for them. This is also an important task of adolescence. While many parents want their children to embrace their own values about sex, sexuality, and relationships, as teens grow into adulthood, they may test, rebel, or decide differently for themselves.

Is this normal? questions (such as, “My breasts are not the same size. Is this normal?”) These might be about physical or emotional development. Teens might not ask these questions about themselves directly but about friends or classmates. With so many changes happening, teens really do want to know what is normal. You don’t have to have all the answers—but you do have to be willing to find them. Here are some resources—local and national—that can help: United Way of Greater Milwaukee & Waukesha County’s teen pregnancy prevention website and communication toolkit for parents (in English and Spanish) can be found here: http://www. babycanwait.com/home.htm The Parents’ Sex Ed Center at Advocates for Youth: http://www.advocatesfo-

ryouth.org/parents-sex-edcenter-home The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy has a ton of resources, including this great video: https://thenationalcampaign.org/resource/ talking-your-teens-aboutsex-love-and-relationships You can do this. So take a deep breath—and start talking! Nicole Angresano is the Vice President of Community Impact for United Way of Greater Milwaukee & Waukesha County. She spearheads Milwaukee’s Teen Pregnancy Prevention Initiative, led by United Way. The community-wide effort has led to a 56% drop in teen births in Milwaukee and has become a national model for community collaboration. Nicole holds a Master’s Degree in Public Health from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, concentrating on adolescent health.

Four easy ways to avoid falling off your workout this winter taste and you’d rather stay inside that’s fine, grab a broom, grab the vacuum, grab a rake! Simple household chores are

When you’re not a workout fanatic, it can be easy to make excuses as to why you couldn’t work today or the day before that – especially when the weather isn’t favorable – but it doesn’t have to be that way. In fact, it could all be so simple. Rochelle Boykin, a certified fitness fanatic and founder of fabfitparty.com, is here to make it that much simpler. Here are four of her best tips for staying in tip-top shape when the weather hits below zero. Get ready to sweat! 1. Walk and take the stairs. “People forget how effective walking and stairs can be. They’re both great for cardio! Try parking your car farther away from the building, which will force you to walk further. Don’t ever take the elevator. Take the stairs instead. Many malls open the halls before the stores open. So, you can take an hour in the mornings to walk inside with a little heat if you don’t want to walk outside. If the mall is multi-level, try walking each level in its entirety and walk up and down the escalator steps. For even more cardio, pick up the

pace. Want to take it up a notch? Carry small hand weights and walk with them. Pets are a great excuse to walk more, too. Extend your morning walk with your dog by a few blocks, every extra step counts.” 2. Actively relax. “When it’s cold outside, we love to stay in and snuggle with a movie and snacks. While you’re in front of the TV watching your favorite show, try something different. Place a mat or towel in front of the television and stretch while the show is on. Once they break for commercials, get up and get moving! Here’s a quick circuit you can do during commercial breaks: 10 jumping jacks 10 high knees 10 squats 10 butt kicks 10 mountain climbers Once your show comes back on, get back on your mat and stretch while you watch TV. If you’re really in a fitness mode, once your show is over, pop in a fitness DVD and get to work!” 3. Do a little work around the house. “If it’s too cold for your

Wealth Building

Planning that affordable holiday trip Are you an advance planner or an improviser? Your travel planning style might save you money during the busy winter holiday travel season. Generally, families with children and a need for specific seating and direct flights may need to plan earlier to secure such reservations. More flexible travelers can roll the dice on last-minute deals. Here are some ideas to explore: Be open-minded about scheduling. Most people know red-eye and dawn flights are typically cheaper. However, holiday travel presents its own set of opportunities for pricing and availability if you don't follow the crowd. For example, with Thanksgiving always on a Thursday, most travelers choose Tuesday or Wednesday for arrival and Sunday for departure. Choosing a different scheduling window, including travel on the actual holiday, may not only save money but considerable stress getting to and from clogged airport, train and bus stations.

Drive smart or leave the keys at home. If you're using your own automobile, make sure your collision and liability coverage are adequate to cover potential medical and repair costs for other motorists if you're in an accident out of town. If you're planning to rent a vehicle, speak with your auto insurance agent before you go. Many personal policies do extend domestic collision and liability coverage to rentals, but it's particularly important to confirm coverage if you're traveling outside the United States. Of course, if you're visiting a place with excellent

public transportation or safe bike routes, check pricing. An affordable bike rental (pack a helmet) or multi-day city or regional bus-and-rail pass might eliminate the need for a car altogether. Sleep cheap. Saving money on accommodations is another area where you can save significant dollars by either planning significantly ahead or trolling for last-minute bargains. Top family destinations generally require reservations months in advance, but see how full they are closest to the actual holiday dates. Many family members may travel a week

before or a week after the actual holiday but won't stay over the holiday. That leaves more rooms and activities available. The same goes for stays in other popular tourist locations around the world. Check destination hotels closer to the date to see if they're offering special rates or packages. Put your membership dollars to work. If you belong to an auto club or have credit cards with particular travel benefits, see whether any of those benefits – from actual mileage points to coupon discounts – can be used to save money. Check your home, health and business insurance. If you are traveling domestically or globally, see if your personal health insurance extends to your destination. The same goes for home/ rental and business insurance. Many people don't realize that some or all of their personal insurance coverage may cover medical, theft, liability, injury and other risks at their destination. Read your policy and confirm your assumptions with your agent.

Consider travel insurance to fill any gaps. Once you've confirmed the limits of your personal coverage, research travel insurance policy sites (http://www.insuremytrip.com) and recent articles on travel insurance so you can make sure common risks, like trip cancellation and lost luggage, are covered; as well as specialized risks, like advanced medical care and medical transportation at your destination. Watch those bags. Many airlines charge ascending fees for every checked bag, so packing light has never made more sense. However, major air and ground shipping companies are now offering luggage-shipping services for domestic and overseas travelers with pickup options at their ground facilities. Make a call and see if this option makes sense, particularly if you take extra clothes or gifts with you at the holidays. Bottom line: Holiday travel bargains can be found months in advance and sometimes at the last minute. Your flexibility will determine the deals you can get.

c.2015, Bolden $24.95 400 pages Open mouth, insert foot. Maybe it doesn’t happen often, but there are times when you have a knack for saying what’s on your mind at precisely the wrong time. You can’t un-say things, though, especially if you mean them but as you’ll see in the new novel “Grant Park” by Leonard Pitts, Jr., at least those words won’t kill you. In his heart, Malcolm Toussaint was always an activist. The son of a Memphis sanitary worker, Toussaint grew

up seeing the lack of equality around him, and he understood that higher education was a means of escape. Once at college, he grew an Afro, wrote angry pamphlets, and spoke his mind but, though he wasn’t alone in his radicalism, he was expelled from white-man’s school anyway. That was February 1968; it was cold but so was life, which Toussaint learned the spring before he returned to college, chastened and wiser. Four decades later, the award-winning newspaper columnist hadn’t forgotten those days, which was why, early one morning, he snuck into his editor’s office and quietly inserted a rant in the paper, a column that had been rejected by his superiors, a tired-of-white-people column that Toussaint knew would kill his career. As the paper’s editor, Bob Carson was the first to reject the column so it especially stung that Toussaint’s action caused Bob to lose his job, too. Being fired was a shock, and there was more: not only was Toussaint missing, but an old girlfriend, Bob’s first love whom he hadn’t seen in years, was in Chicago with the Obama campaign and

'Black Lives Matter'

It has been more than two-and-a-half years after the acquittal of Florida resident George Zimmerman for the murder of Trayvon Martin, an unarmed African American teen on his way to his father’s house from a convenience store. Zimmerman was the neighborhood watch coordinator for the gated community where Martin’s father lived. In the aftermath of Zimmerman’s acquittal and the lack of convictions (or even reliable data) on the number and circumstances of African American deaths while in police custody, a movement known as “Black Lives Matter” grew into a national campaign aimed primarily at police brutality toward African Americans. Since its founding the organization has engaged in several significant acts of civil disobedience and also inserted itself into the presidential election. With all the assignments that The Milwaukee Times Weekly Newspaper has traveled to since the founding of the movement, this is one of several such signs near a church. When contactStaff Photo ed by The Milwaukee Times, a staff member at the All People’s Church at 2600 N. 2nd St., said the sign was actually attached to an adjacent house which the church did not own.
