City officials arm themselves against the flu

Event Photo

As the weather gets colder, Mayor Tom Barrett and the City of Milwaukee Health Department are sending a message: Don’t invite the flu to your home. “The start to flu season is just around the corner,” said Mayor Tom Barrett. “To protect yourself, your family, and your co-workers, I urge everyone over 6 months of age to get vaccinated well before the flu arrives. Even healthy people can get the flu and spread it to others.” Influenza (the flu) is among the most common respiratory illnesses in the United States, infecting millions of people each year. The virus is spread through the air when someone who is sick coughs, sneezes, or speaks. Symptoms of seasonal flu include

fever, cough, sore throat, stuffy nose, muscle or body aches, and fatigue. Though common, the flu can be serious, leading to hospitalization and sometimes death in the most vulnerable populations, including infants and young children, the elderly, and those with chronic illnesses. “Flu season is unpredictable,” said Commissioner of Health Bevan K. Baker. “Each year, different strains of the influenza virus can spread. That is why the single best way to protect yourself and your family is to get vaccinated each year.” The vaccine is recommended for all individuals over 6 months of age, especially those at greatest risk for serious complications in-

cluding adults 65 and older, children younger than 5, and pregnant women. The City of Milwaukee Health Department also encourages frequent hand washing with soap and water, and covering coughs and sneezes with your sleeve to reduce the spread of germs. Those experiencing symptoms should remain home from work or school, get rest, and drink plenty of fluids. Flu vaccine remains widely available this year through local health care providers and retail pharmacies. City of Milwaukee Health Department clinics have a limited supply of flu vaccine available to uninsured children or children on public insurance such as BadgerCare.

Supreme Court sides against Scott Walker, delivering the final word on voter I.D.s By Urban Media News

law unenforceable for November’s midterm elections in Wisconsin. The law was originally upheld in September by the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals, mandating photo identification at the polls just fifty-two days before the election. Right-wing lawmakers and activists commended the decision, disregarding evidence showing voter fraud to be virtually non-existent in Wisconsin. A photo ID requirement would have blocked thousands of voters from their fundamental right to vote, as 300,000 Wisconsinites do not have own a acceptable form of identification, nor the necessary means to acquire one. The Supreme Court made a prudent decision by keeping a few vital points in mind, namely the impossibility for scrambling voters to obtain an acceptable ID this close to Election Day. The Supreme Court’s ruling means that voters will not have to show a photo ID at the polls in order to vote in November. The most recent development is a win for democracy, but the law could still be in effect for future elections. Scott Walker and state Re-

publicans still support the law and will do all they can to have it reinstated for future elections. Voting in November is no less important now, electing Democratic candidates is still incredibly crucial. With voter ID not in place for the November election, it is still important to ensure you are registered and prepared to vote in November. Show Republicans they will never be able to take away your vote by choosing Democrats like Mary Burke, who will fight to protect your right to vote. The last day to register to vote by mail is Wednesday, October 15. If you register to vote by mail, your voter

registration form must be postmarked by Wednesday, Oct 15, 2014. You may register to vote in person at any time up to, and including, Election Day. You can cast your vote early in-person at the local municipal clerk’s office starting next week Monday, October 20 through Friday, October 31. Please check with your municipal clerk for office hours, as early voting is no longer permitted on weekends. The Counseling Corner

By Rev. Judith T. Lester, B.Min. M.Th

Intimate partner violence (Part I) For the next two weeks this column will address intimate partner violence. Historically called "domestic violence," "intimate partner violence" describes physical, sexual, or psychological harm by a current or former intimate partner or spouse. This type of violence can occur among heterosexual or same-sex couples. According to the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) violence by an intimate partner is linked to both immediate and longterm health, social, and economic consequences. Factors at all levels — individual, relationship, community, and societal — contribute to intimate partner violence. The pervasive problem of intimate partner violence demands the entire community becomes involved to bring awareness to the issues faced by those who are battered and abused. Types of intimate partner violence NIJ has often partnered with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on the issue of vio-

lence against women, in particular by co-sponsoring the National Violence Against Women Survey (NVAWS). The CDC's National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, which spotlights injury and violence prevention topics, defines five main types of intimate partner violence: • Physical violence is the intentional use of physical force with the potential for causing death, disability, injury, or physical harm. • Sexual violence can be divided into three categories: (1) the use of physical

force to compel a person to engage in a sexual act unwillingly, whether or not the act is completed; (2) an attempted or completed sexual act involving a person who, because of illness, disability, or the influence of alcohol or other drugs, or because of intimidation or pressure, is unable to understand the nature or condition of the act, decline participation, or communicate unwillingness to engage in the act; and (3) abusive sexual contact. • Threats of physical or sexual violence communicate the intent to cause death,

disability, injury, or physical harm through the use of words, gestures, or weapons. • Psychological/emotional violence traumatizes the victim by acts, threats of acts, or coercive tactics. In most cases, emotional violence has been preceded by acts or threats of physical or sexual violence. • Stalking is often included among types of intimate partner violence. Stalking generally refers to harassing or threatening behavior that an individual engages in repeatedly, such as sending the victim unwanted presents, following or lying in wait for the victim, damaging or threatening to damage the victim's property, appearing at a victim's home or place of business, defaming the victim's character or spreading rumors, or harassing the victim via the Internet by posting personal information. As with perpetrators of physical and sexual violence, stalkers may be motivated by a desire to exert control over their victims. Stalking and intimate partner violence may

co-occur. Beloved, preventing intimate partner violence requires reaching a clear understanding of those factors that contribute to intimate partner violence, coordinating resources, and fostering and initiating change in individuals, families, and society. If you know someone who is a victim of intimate partner violence/domestic abuse, encourage them to seek help immediately. Next Week: Intimate Partner Violence (Part II: Conclusion) The writer does not assume responsibility in any way for readers’ efforts to apply or utilize information or recommendations made in these articles, as they may not be necessarily appropriate for every situation to which they may refer. Rather, the objective is strictly informative and educational. If you would like to contact Rev. Lester, write to her c/o P.O. Box 121, Brookfield, WI. 53008.

Find bushels of fun ideas to make this autumn memorable

Colorful leaves fill the air of Wisconsin this time of year, awakening the senses of visitors to join the fun! Although summer has drifted away, there are many reasons to smile while exploring Wisconsin this fall. Fallin’ in love with the state will be an unforgettable experience with endless fun activities. Enjoy scenic fall routes, corn mazes, apple orchards, pumpkin patches, wineries and much more! Have fun getting lost! Wisconsin doesn’t disappoint in highly designed, thrill shocking corn mazes for anyone looking for an adrenaline rush of fun. The fun doesn’t end once you’ve completed the maze either; from old time hayrides to pumpkin chucking, enjoy the magic only fall on the farm can offer. Below are some of the coolest corn mazes to visit that will have your little ones begging you to come again next year! Schuett Farm – Mukwonago, WI All techies come to this corn maze where you’re only one click away! This ordinary corn maze has transformed into a “high-tech” 8-acres labyrinth where an interactive checkpoint system has been activated to guide you. There are various checkpoints throughout the maze allowing visitors to use their smart phones to navigate throughout the maze. Hay-

rides, pumpkin launching, and pick-your-own pumpkins are just a few of the other festive activities you can enjoy. Schuster’s Playtime Farm – Deerfield, WI As one of the largest corn mazes around the state, Schuster’s offers every fall activity you could dream of including its famous Haunted Forest. Not for the faint-hearted, this forest is intended for those looking for a good scare as you climb through tunnels and come face-to-face with creatures you won’t even be able to distinguish. Outside of the Haunted Forest, visitors

have a chance to experience its pumpkin patch, hayrides, bonfires, farm animals and a fresh assortment of fall treats like the crowd favorite, apple cider doughnut. Treinen Farm – Lodi, WI Featured in MSN’s “Ten Amazing Mazes Around the World” it has proven to be one of Wisconsin’s premier corn mazes with a whopping 15-acres of paths twisting through corn stalks taller than the State Capitol Building. Be sure to spot the “secret locations,” where you can receive prizes for the more locations you hit. Once finished with the maze, hop on the horse pulls

What’s Happening?

Friendship Progressive Baptist Church purchases the former Holy Mt. Carmel Baptist Church Dr. Michael and Lady Cokes, along with several members of Friendship Progressive Baptist Church, 2127 W. Garfield Ave., went to US Title Company on October 10, 2014 to seal the deal for the purchase of the former Holy Mt. Carmel Baptist Church. Commenting on their recent purchase, Rev. Cokes said, “This ministry is radical for Christ! In three months, Friendship Progressive raised $75,000 to make a down payment, which was needed to obtain the threeplus acres of land and the church building. The vision of this ministry is to reach the unsaved, unchurched, untaught and uncommitted people in this city.” He went on to say their future plans, which are already underway for 2015, entail building a su-

perstructure that seats 3,000 parishioners, a school for the gifted and talented, a credit union and a restaurant. The current church building will be used as the youth church and fellowship hall. “This ministry is a true example and encouragement of what can be done through Christ when you operate on faith,” Pastor Cokes explained. Pastor Cokes also expressed appreciation and thanks to everyone, on behalf of the church, who supported and sowed into the ministry of the church and a special shout-out to Ken Merritt of Set-To-Go Loans out of Memphis, Tennessee who assisted Progressive Church members secure the financing for the current and future purchases and projects.

More than 300 distinguished alumni of Lincoln High School from the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s attended dinner last month at the Milwaukee Radisson. In partnership with Lincoln Center of the Arts Middle School, more than 100 alumni also toured the school. Lincoln High School closed in 1979, but in 1980, the Milwaukee Board of School Directors voted to reopen the building as a middle school with an arts program. Current Lincoln Center of the Arts Principal Ramon Evans welcomed the Legendary Lincolns to the school. "It's inspirational to see the love the alumni all still have for the Legendary Lincoln," said Evans. "They were very excited to see that the building still looks great."

Did you lose BadgerCare Plus coverage?

Sore throat: Common cold or bacterial infection?

Approximately 63,000 Wisconsinites lost their BadgerCare Plus coverage on April 1, 2014 as a result of the decision to reject a federal investment in the BadgerCare program. In Milwaukee County, 10,239 people lost their BadgerCare and nearly half of these people are stuck in a coverage gap and likely still uninsured. If you are one of the 63,000 Wisconsinites who lost BadgerCare Plus coverage and have not yet purchased health insurance, you are eligible for 2014 coverage in the federal Health Insurance Marketplace. Following action taken by Senator Tammy Baldwin to help those who lost their BadgerCare gain health care coverage, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Ser-

We’ve all had sore throats around this time of year. Your throat feels scratchy and may hurt when you swallow. What can you do to soothe a sore throat? And when is it a sign of a more serious infection? Most sore throats are caused by viral infections such as the common cold or the flu. These throat problems are generally minor and go away on their own. To soothe your irritated throat, keep it moist. “Ever notice that a sore throat seems worse in the morning? It’s because your throat gets so dry overnight,” says Dr. Valerie Riddle, an infectious disease expert at NIH. “Having lozenges or hard candies—or anything that stimulates saliva production—will keep your throat

moist. It’s also important to drink plenty of fluids.” For young children who might choke on hard candies or lozenges, try cold liquids and popsicles. Throat pain might also be soothed by throat sprays and over-thecounter pain relievers such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen or aspirin, but don’t give aspirin to young children. Contact a doctor if your sore throat is severe, doesn’t feel better after a few days, or is accompanied by a high fever or swollen glands. These symptoms could be signs of a bacterial infection, such as strep throat. Taking antibiotics won’t help at all if your sore throat is caused by viruses, but they’re essential for fighting bacterial infections like strep. Strep is the most common bacterial throat infection. Although it can occur in adults, strep throat is more common in children between ages 5 and 15. Riddle says strep can be harder to detect in younger children, because it can cause a runny nose and other symptoms that make it seem like a cold. “If your child has severe throat pain, a fever above 100.4 degrees, or swollen glands, you should get medical attention right away,” advises Riddle. Children with strep also may experience nausea, vomiting and stomach pain.

13

To see whether you have strep throat, the doctor will take a throat swab. If test results confirm strep, your doctor will prescribe antibiotics. After 24 hours of taking them, you should no longer be contagious. You’ll likely begin feeling better within a couple of days, but to fully recover it’s important to finish all of the medicine. Strep is highly contagious. Treat it quickly to prevent it from spreading to others. Riddle says, “Not only can the infection be transmitted, but there are potential complications from untreated strep throat.” These include ear infections, rheumatic fever and kidney problems. Another fairly common throat infection is tonsillitis, which occurs when you have sore, swollen tonsils. It’s caused by many of the same viruses and bacteria that cause sore throats. If you have frequent bouts of tonsillitis or strep throat, you may need surgery (called a tonsillectomy) to have your tonsils removed. The best way to protect yourself from the germs that cause these infections is to wash your hands often. Try to steer clear of people who have colds or other contagious infections. And avoid smoking and inhaling second-hand smoke, which can irritate your throat.

Frequently asked questions about Ebola

The infection of health workers in Madrid and Dallas with Ebola marked the first cases in which people contracted the deadly virus outside of Africa. The number of cases in West Africa, where the worst-ever outbreak is raging, keeps climbing. More than 8,300 people have been infected and more than 4,000 have died, mostly in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone. Below are frequently asked questions about the disease. Q: Where does Ebola come from? A: The origin of the virus is unknown, but fruit bats are considered the most likely host, according to the World Health Organization. Ebola jumps to humans from infected animals including chimpanzees, gorillas and bats that live in the rain forest. The virus is named after the Ebola River in what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where the first human outbreak was recorded in 1976. Q: How does it spread from person to person? A: Through contact with blood or other bodily fluids such as vomit, feces, urine and saliva. Infection can also occur if broken skin or mucous membranes of a healthy person come into contact with items that have become contaminated with

an Ebola patient's infectious fluids such as soiled clothing, bed linen, or used needles. Q: What are the chances of survival after infection? A: About 52 percent of those infected in the three most affected countries have survived, according to the WHO statistics. But those statistics include people who have just become infected. In looking at those patients with a known clinical outcome, the survival rate is 29 percent, according to a study by the WHO published in September in the New England Journal of Medicine. Q: What are the chances of a global outbreak? A: The diagnoses of health-care workers in Dallas and Madrid have heightened concern that hospitals have inadequate infection control measures in place. Aid workers and a journalist infected in West Africa have been evacuated to hospitals in the U.S., Spain, France, Britain, Norway and Germany. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has said an Ebola outbreak in the U.S. similar to the one in West Africa is highly unlikely because the United States has better infection controls in hospitals and in burial procedures. Q: Is there any treatment or cure for Ebola? A: There is no specific

treatment to cure the disease. Severely ill patients require intensive supportive care. They are frequently dehydrated and need intravenous fluids or oral rehydration with solutions that contain electrolytes. Q: Can coughing and sneezing spread the virus? A: While an infected person who sneezes or coughs directly in another person's face could infect that person, Ebola primarily enters the body through tiny cuts or abrasions, or through mucus membranes of the eyes, nose, ears and mouth. Q: Can an infected person transmit the virus before they're sick?

A: It's not impossible but it's extremely unlikely. Until an infected person develops symptoms, the virus is not present in sufficient quantity in their blood to be effectively transmitted. Once symptoms start, even in the early stages, the amount of virus shed in bodily fluids is enough to infect someone else. Q: Could Ebola mutate to become airborne? A: Almost certainly not, said Andrew Easton, a professor of virology at the University of Warwick in Britain. That's a view shared by other top scientists, such as David Heymann of the London School of Hygiene and

Tropical Medicine and Columbia University's Ian Lipkin. No virus has ever been known to change its mode of transmission. Q: What are the symptoms of the virus? A: Sudden onset of fever, intense weakness, muscle pain, headache and sore throat are typical signs and symptoms. This is followed by vomiting, diarrhea, rash, impaired kidney and liver function, and in some cases, internal and external bleeding. Infections can only be confirmed through laboratory testing. Q: How long does it take for symptoms to appear? A: In the past, the incubation period has ranged from 2 days to 21 days. In the current outbreak, the mean incubation period is 11.4 days, the WHO said in the NEJM last month. Q: Is air travel safe? A: The World Health Organization has consistently said it doesn't recommend travel or trade restrictions, though that hasn't stopped several airlines from suspending services to the affected countries. Outbound passengers at airports in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia have their temperature taken for signs of fever, and are required (Continued on pg. 17)

to complete a questionnaire about whether they have recently had contact with anyone infected with Ebola. The U.S. and Britain are beginning to screen air passengers arriving from those countries. So far, two cases of Ebola have spread by air travel: one from Liberia to Nigeria, and the other from Liberia to Dallas. Q: How is this outbreak different from past outbreaks? A: The current outbreak in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia is the first time Ebola has appeared in West Africa. Until now, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda have seen the worst outbreaks, which have tended to be in isolated areas in single countries. A lack of border control has allowed infected people who didn't seek medical attention because of fear, suspicion or stigma to travel freely between the three countries. Q: Where do we stand with developing drugs for Ebola? A: An experimental antibody cocktail being developed by the U.S. government, the Public Health Agency of Canada and two drug companies, Mapp Biopharmaceutical Inc. of San Diego and Toronto- based Defyrus Inc. has shown promise in animal tests. Called ZMapp, the drug, produced using

tobacco plants, hasn't been tested in humans, but was approved by the Food and Drug Administration for emergency use in this outbreak. Patients who have received ZMapp include two infected American health workers and a British nurse, all of whom recovered, and a Spanish priest and a Liberian health-care worker who died. While the supply of ZMapp is exhausted, researchers and U.S. officials are trying to accelerate production of more doses. Tekmira Pharmaceuticals Corp. also is testing its Ebola therapy, which was given to a U.S. aid worker who recovered. Q: What about vaccines? A: There's no approved vaccine, though two are in early- stage testing with a view to being used in West Africa as soon as data showing they're safe becomes available. One is developed by GlaxoSmithKline and the U.S. National Institutes of Health, and the other by NewLink Genetics Corp. Data should be available by next month, and health officials hope to start giving them to health workers in January.
