On Thursday, October 11, 2018, The Black Health Coalition of Wisconsin (BHCW) celebrated their 30th Anniversary at the Wisconsin Black Historical Society, 2620 W. Center St. The story of the BHCW started in 1984 when a small group of colleagues began meeting on a regular basis to discuss solutions to lack of quality health care that was available to the community. Among those were then-nurse Patricia McManus (inset), who served as the President and CEO of BHCW since it incorporated in 1988. For the past 30 years, BHCW has fought to end health disparities in the community. Pictured at the event are (from left) BHCW HIV Prevention Specialist Chad Carrol; BHCW Board Members Jesse McSwain, Gail Morgan, and Norma Madison; Wisconsin Immunization Program Advisor Jacqueline SillsWare; BHCW Board President Gregory Fanning; and BHCW HIV Project, Milwaukee Healthy Beginnings Project, and Fatherhood Initiative Coordinator Jim Addison. MPS hosts Urban Music Leadership Conference For the second time, Milwaukee Public Schools hosted the Urban Music Leadership Conference, a gathering of about 100 music education professionals. The group observed music programs at six MPS schools—Humboldt Park, Allen-Field, ALBA, Golda Meir, Riverside, and Milwaukee High School of the Arts (MHSA). At MHSA, attendees eagerly joined in singing along with choir students and looking over the shoulders of band students.

In the following directives I have no praise for you, for your meetings do more harm than good. - 1 Corinthians 11: 17 NN 17

On Wednesday, August 1, 2018, several Black pastors were invited to the White House by President Trump to sit at his table for the President's "Meeting with Inner City Pastors." The projects will bring nutrition education to communities through school, clinic and faith-based settings. “A substantial number of cancer deaths could be prevented by making healthy choices, like eating well and being active. With Kohl’s ongoing commitment to the Kohl’s Healthy Families program, we’re able to continue offering tips, tools and other resources to help families in southeast Wisconsin live healthy and lower their risk of cancer,” said Laurie

Bertrand, American Cancer Society’s executive director in Wisconsin. “Our partnership with Kohl’s continues to meet a need in our community and provides critical support for the fight against cancer.” The donation will also continue Kohl’s annual support of the Community Health Workers Conference, during which healthcare professionals receive training on delivering cancer prevention and screening services in medically-underserved communities. The grant will also support school wellness policies and practices within the Kohl’s Healthy Families program, Relay for Life events and the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk in Milwaukee. Since 2001, Kohl's and Kohl’s Cares have committed more than $100 million to organizations in the Milwaukee area, including more than $11 million to the American Cancer Society.

Milwaukee churches band together to get 'Souls to the Polls' Central City religious leaders from diverse denominations mobilize voters for Nov.6

More than 40 Ministers from City of Milwaukee convened at Canaan Missionary Baptist Church,– 2975 North 11th Street, on September 29, 2018, to hold a press conference before they launched a massive door-to-door canvass effort. Ministers and members of their congregations knocked on every door in an 80 square block area urging people to vote on November 6 and leaving information on where and when they can vote. According to Rev. Greg Lewis of St. Gabriel’s Church of God In Christ, “Our people must use their votes as a megaphone to call for jobs, health care, police accountability, safe streets and quality schools. As religious leaders, we can rebuild hope that voting makes a difference in can help or hurt us.” were 40,000 fewer voters in 29,000 were African Amer- poorest districts in the city. who makes decisions that In the 2016 elections, there Milwaukee than in 2012 -- ican. Most lived in the five More than 9,000 had no voter ID. Souls to the Polls is addressing both the lack of voter engagement and the problems with harsh new voting laws. Voting Specialist Anita Johnson is working to make sure that barrier is down in 2018. “I am educating people on what they need to vote, helping get their photo ID, and making sure people have the tools to participate. “Our community has been seriously damaged by decisions made in Madison and Washington,” said Pastor Mose Fuller of St. Timothy’s Baptist Church. "We are losing resources for critical services because our community is not a priority for many politicians. In 2018, we are going to show political leaders that our voting block matters and we better be a priority in the future.” The canvass went south from Chambers Street to North Avenue. Souls to the Polls is a network of churches building a groundswell of voters in 2018. For more information, please call Rev. Greg Lewis at 414-324-1629 or email at lewisgregpu3@yahoo.com.
