Bader Philanthropies celebrates grand opening of new global headquarters
On Monday, October 22, 2018, Bader Philanthropies, one of Milwaukee’s largest foundations, celebrated the grand opening ribbon cutting of their brand new global headquarters in Milwaukee, at 3300 N. Dr. Martin Luther King, Drive. Rather than build a new skyscraper downtown, Bader Philanthropies opted to restore a historic building right in the 6th district, in the center of the community it is helping to support with its philanthropic work. The new headquarters project, which broke ground in May, represents an $8 million investment by Bader in the neighborhood. The headquarters is just one of the featured projects helping to revitalize King Drive and the surrounding area. Being Frank There is a missing person on the planet. At one time this person was the king of kings and looked upon as a divine ruler. This person was the epitome of what a man should be. In 2018 this person has gone missing and his presence is needed. It’s time to file a Missing Person Report for the Black man. I’m sure many of you are scratching your heads saying I just saw an African American male a few minutes ago. That is one of the problems; you saw an African American man, not a Black man. The difference is one I have talked about over the years on TV and in this column. An African American man is what the name says, an American. A Black man is one who lives in America but knows who he is and where he is. A Black man understands that he is descended from prisoners of war and simply resides in the USA. A Black man knows that he is the most sought

Black man, where art thou?
after, yet despised, person on the planet, and with this knowledge, acts accordingly. Many ask, “Well doesn’t an African American man know this?” Yes, to a certain extent. The difference is the African American man can only see himself in this oppressive USA society. The goal of an African American man is to simply keep his head down and fly under the radar and die happily with a potbelly. The African American man focuses more on sports and how many women they can bed than taking care of business. This doesn’t mean that an African American man doesn’t have a good job and take care of a family, far from that. The African American man takes care of his family and lives as an American does, a white American. The African American man has lost all sense of self worth and replaced it with one borrowed from the Caucasian male who has hated and oppressed him
for male images. In order to recalibrate the universe, the Black man has to stand again. The positive thing is that any African American man can become a Black man. The key isn’t in the physical, but in the mental realm. If an African American man can begin to think outside of the small box society has placed him in, he begins to evolve into his true nature, Black. This seems like a minor thing, but changing thought is one of the hardest tasks in the world. One key reason is that the person has to not only reevaluate everything around them, they have to look at themselves. This unabashed look in the mirror often leads to a mental retreat back into the safety of the known, which is African American mentality.
for nearly 3000 years. The African American man’s deficiencies have led to the point of no return for the African American people. The African American man’s weakness has led to the rule of the White man through his tool, the African American female. It has led to many young African American men being led by clothing designers unknowingly into alternative lifestyles. The African American man’s neutered posture had led to a rise in imitations of manhood by African American females The Universe needs the who prey on other African Black Man to return. In order American females looking for this planet to survive, the
Black Man needs to return and take control back from these borderline insane rulers of today. African American males, if you are tired of being downtrodden and grinning fools, then begin to think. African American males, if you are tired of watching sports and chasing white women, think. Think, African American man, about who you once were and how you can become greater. Think about Black, African American man, and become. and realistic limits on demands is necessity for every child of God, especially clergy. Jesus warns, “All you need to say is simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one.” (Matthew 5:37). In other words, do not equivocate; mean what you assert, and adhere to your assertion. Beloved, the bottom line is the burnout crisis has everyone’s attention and can provide a point of readiness for change in one’s life in many
ways. One person cannot do everything for everybody. If they try, more than likely, they will experience the feeling of being overwhelmed. In this contemporary society, there is more opportunity to overlap family time with work and leisure time as technology such as smart phones, social media and email make it literally possible for one to stay connected around the clock. Remember, the only person that knows how much is enough is you and only you have control over the way you want your life to be. There will always be that inherent tension between what you have been called to do and what others expect of you. Do not let others foist their agendas and expectations on you. Know your limits, goals, needs and issues and adhere to them, and you will avoid running with your emotional,
spiritual and mental tank on empty. Sources: 1 Biali, Dr. Susan, Overwhelmed? 8 Tips to Avoid Burnout and Balance Your Life, (Psychology Today, Posted May 2013). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ Personal_boundaries 2

Afterglow I’d like the memory of me to be a happy one. I’d like to leave an afterglow of smiles when life is done. I’d like to leave an echo whispering softly down the ways, Of happy times and laughing times and bright and sunny days. I’d like the tears of those who grieve, to dry before the sun; Of happy memories that I leave when life is done.

COMMUNITY COLUMN UWM stories shine through sponsorship of WNOV radio show By Angela McManaman The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee is proud to be one of the Midwest’s most diverse universities. It has a long tradition of welcoming students from many backgrounds and dozens of countries around the world, as well as every neighborhood in and around Milwaukee. In the 1970s and early ’80s, Richard Cox and Anita Sparks were two such students who had unique experiences at their hometown university. Cox, a retired criminal justice leader, attended UWM from 1970-74. Sparks, a retired educator who consults for Milwaukee Public Schools, attended UWM from 19781984 and earned a master’s degree from the university in 1993. Cox and Sparks share highlights of their UWM journeys through the university’s new yearlong sponsorship of WNOV-AM 860’s There is Always Something Good to Talk About, hosted by Faithe Colas. You’ll hear from them and learn about other UWM alumni, students and professors 10:30 a.m. Saturdays. Lifelong Milwaukeean Joan Prince, UWM’s vice chancellor for global inclusion and engagement, initiated the sponsorship. “Shining a positive light on the personalities and programs that make UWM a destination university for research and community engagement is part of our mission,” Prince said. “Bringing these stories to WNOV listeners is an effective, important way to ensure that Milwaukeeans from every ZIP code know what UWM has to offer.” Like study-abroad programs. Every year, more than 600 UWM students study outside of the United States. The Office of Global Inclusion & Engagement wants to see more students from underrepresented backgrounds – African-American, Latino, Native American – use their passport and UWM Panther ID to study internationally. “I always tell people, find the college that will help you craft a better you,” Prince explained on a recent episode of Colas’ program. “But not such a serious place that you think life is all about you. Have fun, learn, make new friends, and increase your boundaries for a moment.” That’s the path Sparks took. Since the fifth grade, Sparks dreamed of being the first in her family to attend college, but she wasn’t sure how to make that happen. Encouraged by her family
UWM’s sponsorship of WNOV-AM 860’s “There is Always Something Good to Talk About,” hosted by Faithe Colas, helps alumni like Anita Sparks (above) share their positive stories. (UWM Photo/ Elora Hennessey) and motivated by ambitious, college-bound friends, she applied to UWM’s School of Education. “UWM was my first choice,” she remembered. “It felt like the right fit.”
An NCON Communications Publication
Sparks moved into Sandburg Hall as a freshman in the fall of 1978. Caring professors and challenging coursework helped her become a teacher and administrator who shared a love of
poetry, literature and travel with students across three decades. “In addition to receiving a great education from instructors pushing me to give my best,” Sparks said, “I received a great education at UWM from being around people from different cultures. These friendships have made me a more well-rounded person and have inspired me to travel.” Among her favorite memories: meeting the first woman elected to public office in Gambia and touring Dubai. Graduation weekend 1974 is Richard Cox’s favorite UWM memory. He had a freshly minted UWM degree in criminal justice, and he and his wife became new parents to a beautiful baby girl. Today, he’s a grandfather of six and retired from a career that included directorships at the Milwaukee County House of Corrections and
Neighborhood House. He’s also a proud member of the UWM Athletics Hall of Fame. He played center for UWM’s men’s basketball team and twice was named its MVP for the season. UWM still had a football team then, and Cox remembers it as a time of athletic camaraderie: “We went to the football games, and the football team came to our basketball games.” It was also a transitional moment for UWM and its students. “When I first came to UWM, there were a lot of Vietnam veterans attending and many older students who worked and had families,” he said. “It’s been exciting to see UWM’s profile rising to become a destination school for traditional students based on its growing academic and research reputation.”

Earwax, of all things, poses unrecognized risk in long-term care of seniors Of all the indignities that come with aging, excessive earwax may be the most insidious. Don’t laugh. That greasy, often gross, buildup occurs more often in older ears than those of the young, experts say. And when it goes unrecognized, it can pose serious problems, especially for the 2.2 million people who live in U.S. nursing homes and assisted living centers. “The excessive amount [of earwax] can cause hearing loss or ringing in your ears. Some people experience vertigo, which increases the risk of falling,” said Jackie Clark, a board-certified audiologist who is president of the American Academy of Audiology. “Right now, we see some correlation between hearing loss and cognitive decline.” Earwax — which is not really wax at all, but a substance called cerumen that binds with dirt, dust and debris — is normally produced by the body as a way to clean and protect the ears. In most people, the self-cleaning process works fine. But in others — including about 10 percent of young children, 20 percent of adults
and more than 30 percent of elderly and developmentally disabled people — the wax collects to the point where it can completely block the ear canal. Up to two-thirds of people in nursing homes may suffer from that condition, known as impaction, according to 2017 guidelines for removal of impacted earwax issued by the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Foundation. In 2016, federal Medicare recipients logged nearly 1.7 million earwax removal services at a cost of more than $51 million, according to payment records analyzed by Kaiser Health News. “In elderly patients, it’s
fairly common,” said Dr. Seth Schwartz, a Seattle otolaryngologist who led the most recent update of the guidelines. “It seems like such a basic thing, but it’s one of the most common reasons people present for hearing-related problems.” It’s so bad that Janie York, of Omaha, Neb., started Hear Now mobile hearing solutions, one of a growing number of businesses devoted to cleaning hearing aids and checking the ears of elderly people living in residential care settings. “It’s epidemic,” said York, whose clients now include 10 local centers. “About 3 in 5 people I see have some degree of impaction and most are completely impacted.”
Julie Brown, assistant director of nursing in the memory support unit at SilverRidge Assisted Living in Gretna, Neb., said impacted earwax can be a particular problem for patients with dementia. It exacerbates hearing loss, which can impede communication and worsen aggression and other difficult behaviors. “As soon as the earwax is cleared up, even their behavior has calmed down,” Brown said. Excessive earwax sends about 12 million people to see health workers every year, including about 8 million who require wax removal, according to the otolaryngology association. That’s not counting the people who try DIY treatments to get rid of earwax, nearly all of which are frowned on by the professionals. “People put everything in their ears: Q-tips, bobby pins, pencils, fingernails,” Schwartz said. Usually, the best way to control earwax is to leave it alone, Schwartz said. But that advice can backfire when families or caregivers neglect to check the ears of elderly people in residential care.
The Everyday Pharmacy
Hearing-aid users should have regular ear checks every three to six months, the guidelines suggest. People with dementia should also have earwax removed regularly. It can take a professional with an otoscope — a device that can look deep inside the ear — to tell if cerumen is blocking the ear canal. Usually, earwax can be safely removed by softening it with water, saline or commercial ear drops and then through gentle syringing or manual extraction with a device called a curette. The effects in the elderly can be immediate. A small 2014 study by Japanese researchers found significant improvements in hearing and cognitive performance in elderly patients with memory disorders when impacted cerumen was removed. Too often, though, earwax in the elderly goes unnoticed. “I’m seeing 15 people here, but what about the other hundred?” York said. “Nobody’s looking. I don’t know why it’s been neglected for so long.”

Q. I have heard about many different ways to treat athlete’s foot, but one that doesn't get mentioned, the best one: BLEACH! On the rare occasion that I get a toe fissure or itchy sole, I just pour several glugs of bleach into the shower and slosh about in it for a minute before I turn on the water. One treatment is all it takes. Don’t worry; it’s only bleach. A. Bleach (sodium hypochlorite) should NEVER be applied to the skin. It can cause irritation, burns and blisters. That’s why you would never see such a recommendation here. Just because “it’s only bleach,” does not mean it’s safe on the skin. There are many over-thecounter anti-fungal treatments that work well. One reader shared his experience: “I have suffered from athlete’s foot and jock itch for years. My doctor recommended Zeasorb antifungal powder, which contains mi-
conazole. This works wonders for me.” Other remedies that readers praise include soaking the feet in dilute vinegar, amber Listerine, baking soda or Epsom salts solutions. There is even an old-fashioned remedy involving soaking the affected foot in urine. If you look for more natural and holistic remedies for foot issue, visit Dr. Lester Carter at Hayat-Carter Herbal Shoppe, 2400 W. Burleigh Street, Milwaukee, WI 53206.
