North Division High School Alumni host 2017 Athletic Hall of Fame On Saturday, October 21, 2017, The North Division High School Alumni Association hosted the 6th Athletic Hall of Fame Banquet at the Hilton Garden Inn, 11600 West Park Place. Every two years the North Division Alumni Association honors about a dozen athletes, coaches, and supporters who help build the outstanding legacy of North Division High School's athletics department. This year's honorees include Barbara Johnson-Burnett, King David Lee, Richard Lee, Robert Luckett, Larry Matthews, Dwayne Perryman, Jerry Young, Jack Hughes, Gene Leland, Ned Moton, French Reasby, and Legend Award recipients Beckum-Stapleton Little League co-founder James W. Beckum and coach/teacher of the year Sarah L. Grant. Spann Foundation presents 4th Annual College Resource Fair On Saturday, October 21, 2017, the Rev. James W. Spann, II Scholarship Foundation hosted its 4th Annual College Resource Fair at North Division High School, 1011 West Center Street. The event featured college recruiters from area colleges and universities, along with representatives from three branches of the U.S. military, as well as the Milwaukee police and fire departments to help students find their right post-high school careers. The Rev. James W. Spann, II Scholarship Foundation was founded by the late Rev. Spann to award scholarships to deserving minority high school graduates in southeastern Wisconsin and help them reach their full potential. On Monday, October 23, 2017, The Salvation Army of Milwaukee County hosted their inaugural "OTHERS" Luncheon at the Wisconsin Club. The event included a panel discussion lead by former Fox 6 sports director Tom Pipines (right), and featured former Green Bay Packers (from left) Gilbert Brown, Leroy Butler and George Koonce. The discussion highlighted how each athlete had the assistance of other people in their lives that allowed them to become not only professional athletes, but also successful business people and community supporters. The 2017 special honoree was Bader Philanthropies, Inc., with the organization recognized for the assistance it offers to people and communities in Milwaukee, across Wisconsin, and in places throughout the world. Bader Philanthropies supports projects, facilities, and institutions that represent Helen Bader’s lifelong passion for lifting others up through knowledge, creativity, and compassion. Next Door joins 'On The Table' conversation By Next Door Foundation From family dining rooms to the Pfister Hotel, more than 5,000 people across the Milwaukee area engaged in a recent dialogue in hopes of building new relationships and ideas to strengthen our community. Next Door – a leading provider of early childhood education in Milwaukee’s central city – joined in the discussion on October 17th as part of the On the Table program from the Greater Milwaukee Foundation. The goal was to bring people together from various backgrounds around a table, and talk about the challenges facing our community and the individual and collective ways we can take to create change. Next Door served as a “Super Host” for On the Table and held two diverse gather-

ings – a breakfast at its 29th Street campus and a lunch at its Capitol Drive campus. Nearly 100 guests attended, including Milwaukee Alderman Russell Stamper and Alderman Cavalier Johnson. The agency also welcomed early childhood education experts from University of
Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Marquette University, plus Next Door donors, volunteers, staff members and parents. Guests sat at tables of eight and introduced themselves by sharing their favorite childhood book. They then discussed the following
questions: • How can high quality early childhood education create long-term systemic change? • As a community, how can we guarantee that low-income children have the same quality foundational experiences as their middle and higher-income peers? • If you could have all the resources and people needed to accomplish something to improve our community, what would you do? • How can we spread these conversations and begin taking action? Each gathering wrapped up with guests writing a self-addressed note with an action goal to take over the next month. Mental health matters! (Week 5) During the first full week of October, the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) and participants across the country joined together to raise awareness of mental illness. NAMI works tirelessly each year to fight stigma, provide support, educate the public and advocate for equal care. This month, this writer joined with NAMI and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in shining a light on mental illness. In this conclusion, NAMI invites everyone to take the NAMI Three Steps Challenge for being stigma free: Step 1: Educate yourself and others. Everyone knows a little about mental health issues but knowing the facts can help you educate others and reject stigmatizing stereotypes. They are not the result of personal weakness, lack of character or poor upbringing. Understanding mental health isn't only about being able to identify symptoms and having a name for conditions, but dispelling false ideas about mental health conditions as well.
Step 2: See the person, not the condition. One in 5 Americans live with a mental health condition and each of them has their own story, path and journey that says more about them than their diagnosis does. Whether you are a friend, family member, caregiver or medical professional, getting to know a person and treating them with kindness and empathy means far more than just knowing what they are going through. Step 3: Take action. Our mental health care system has been in crisis for far too long; often keeping treatment and recovery out of the hands of many who need it. We can act now as we push for better legislation and policies to improve lives for everyone. Also, by lending support you can show that this cause is important to you. Beloved, there are many in our community, society and even the church who are struggling with mental illness or mental disability.
Often people with a mental illness are treated as outcasts. Jesus did not treat anyone as an outcast and we should not either. Just as Jesus loved everyone, may we continue Jesus’ ministry of love, let’s advocate for those who need our help and minister to those suffering from mental illness. Let’s not ignore their pain! If we love them, we will help them and educate parishioners through educational forums and other opportunities. While this series has concluded, may it just be the beginning of the conversation.
Getting help: People often don’t get the mental health services they need because they don’t know where to start. The Department of Health and Human Services suggests: • Talk to your primary care doctor or another health professional about mental health problems. Ask them to connect you with the right mental health services. • If you do not have a health professional who can assist you, use these resources to find help for yourself, your friends, your family, or your students: Emergency Medical Services – 911. If the situation is potentially life-threatening, get immediate emergency assistance by calling 911, available 24 hours a day. COMMUNITY COLUMN Once-homeless veteran uses UWM degree to help others By Zach Brooke Near the lowest point of Kevin Evans’ life, when he was a homeless military veteran without direction, he got the lift that would make him the man he is today. A Veterans Affairs staffer complimented Evans’ untapped capacities for leadership, perseverance and empathy. “He told me,” Evans recalls, 'You would be a great success in social service, working with people, if you went back and got your education’.” That put Evans on a path toward his 2011 master’s degree in social work from UWM. He couldn’t have earned it without assistance from UWM’s Veterans Upward Bound program. Since then, UWM has opened its Military and Veterans Resource Center, or MAVRC. Both initiatives offer a broad range of services for veterans. Now, Evans uses his UWM degree to help fellow veterans stuck in ruts like those he escaped. He works for the nonprofit Center for Veterans Issues, which assists vets through a variety of programs, including counseling, housing services and job skills. In October, the UWM Alumni Association honored him with its Community Service Award. UWM is one of the Mid-

Its commitment to military personnel will be on full display when it hosts the fourth annual Military and Veterans Ball. Evans was discharged from the Army in 1986 after a 10-year hitch. Unable to adjust to civilian life back in Milwaukee, he struggled with substance abuse. He became estranged from his family, eventually drifting into homelessness on and
called “maverick,” launched at UWM in late 2012 and is a one-stop shop for veterans seeking assistance. It guides them through campus life, and connects them and their spouses to employment resources. “We try to help them every step of the way in every place they might need it,” says Jayne Holland, interim director of MAVRC. On Friday, Nov. 10, MAVRC will host an open house to celebrate its five-year anniversary. Although Evans was at UWM prior to MAVRC’s inception, Upward Bound introduced him to resources like the UWM Writing Center and encouraged him to speak to his professors about his learning disability. The adjustments allowed him to thrive. His master’s degree netted a job at CVI, the same agency that helped him two decades ago. As an outreach specialist, he spends much of his time offering help to homeless vets. “It makes me feel good when I go home at night,” Evans says, “knowing that I touched somebody else’s life."

off for much of a decade. “Life wasn’t going too good,” recalls Evans, now 58 years old. After that pivotal visit to the VA, and with encouragement from his mother, the big step came in 1997. Evans reached out to VETS Place Central, a transitional housing service run by the Center for Veterans Issues that provides temporary shelter to displaced servicemen and women. For Evans, taking that step wasn’t easy. “It’s a pride
thing.” he says. “I had to go out to VPC and humble myself, and say, ‘Hey, I need you guys to help’.” He didn’t know then that he’d someday become one of the helpers. With CVI’s help, he enrolled in Veterans Upward Bound, a federally funded educational program that teaches core learning skills in preparation for college. “We started doing the reading, writing and arithmetic,” he says, “three areas that a lot of veterans are very slow in now.” Soon, he began to collect diplomas. A few years after completing a bachelor’s in criminal justice, Evans learned of UWM’s master’s program in social work. It was the gateway to a job where Evans could help others. “I wanted to change my whole life story,” he says. “I felt I was a menace to society and I wanted to give back.” He enrolled at UWM, only to struggle with the advanced coursework, partly because, he later discovered, he had a learning disability. But UWM has a slew of resources designed to help veterans. MAVRC, colloquially

Why creating a culture of health is key for saving African American hearts While heart disease and stroke — and deaths from those diseases — have declined in the United States in recent decades, those advances have not been shared equally in the African American community. A panel of experts has been trying to find out why. The result is a new American Heart Association scientific statement about cardiovascular health in African Americans that examines the challenges and proposes solutions. “We still see higher rates of heart disease and risk factors such as obesity, high blood pressure and diabetes in African Americans as compared to whites, and higher death rates from heart attack and stroke,” said Mercedes Carnethon, Ph.D., associate professor of preventive medicine at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine and chair of the group that wrote the new statement. “We thought it was important to pull together all the information.” The report points to cardiovascular disease as a prime cause of the gap between expected life spans of blacks and whites — more than three years for both men and women — and identifies a number of factors for the continuing disparity. The first, Carnethon said, tran-
scends race. “What we see for all ethnic groups is notable differences by socioeconomic status,” she said. “High socioeconomic status provides access to health-promoting resources, access to a culture that promotes the ability to make healthy lifestyle choices, access to healthy foods and exercise, even the ability to prioritize good sleep.” But even among different groups at the same economic level, she said, African Americans lag behind. “We’ve got the information, we’ve got better therapies than ever,” she said. “So why aren’t they either received by all people or as effective?” Age, the report said, is one key. Many African Americans are developing risk factors, particularly obesity, earlier in life, which leads to high blood pressure and di-

abetes — and subsequently heart attacks and strokes — at younger ages than other groups. High rates of hypertension and less effective disease management are major contributors to the disparity, according to the report, as are the disadvantages of living in poor, underserved neighborhoods. “The takeaway is we still face a significant problem,” Carnethon said. “We need to find ways to create a culture of health in the African American community and prioritize a healthy lifestyle to prevent heart disease.” To accomplish that, the report highlights the need for progress at every level of health care, from individuals to health care providers to policymakers. Among the recommendations is to invest in environments that pro-
mote healthy lifestyles, such as safe spaces for physical activity and supermarkets offering affordable, nutritious food that are often lacking in poorer neighborhoods. Also advised in the report are programs that promote healthy diets and lifestyles, particularly through churches and other faith-based institutions, to raise awareness of cardiovascular risk factors and the need to lower them. Increased funding of medical research to help tailor treatment to African Americans is also recommended, as are efforts to create a more diverse workforce in health care to enhance trust in the medical community. “This is a call to action,” said Ivor Benjamin, M.D., director of the Medical College of Wisconsin’s Cardiovascular Center. “It recognizes the complexity of the problem,” he said. “It’s not just about patients and health care providers. It’s about the public health system. It’s about the whole community, local health departments and legislatures. All of them should be active-
ly engaged in improving cardiovascular health.” Benjamin, who is president-elect of the AHA but not involved with the new statement, said the report “really gets into how can we take a more holistic approach that will improve the health of all communities. I think it will bring the right stakeholders to the table to address a multidisciplinary problem.” Carnethon said the report’s panel hopes its work will help African Americans better understand their health issues and communicate with their doctors, help doctors focus on the African American community, and prod policymakers to make changes that will eliminate the disparities. But on an individual level, she said, the message is universal. “It really starts on the prevention end, to maintain a healthy lifestyle so risk factors don’t develop,” she said. “However, once they do, it’s about taking ownership of your health, understanding the options and managing your risk.”

New attitudes toward adoption from foster care offer hope More than 110,000 children in the U.S. foster care system are legally free for adoption, yet more than 20,000 of these kids will never find an adoptive family. After a childhood of hardship, youth exiting the system without family support face a high risk of unemployment, homelessness, incarceration and other negative life outcomes. But the 2017 US Adoption Attitudes Survey offers a glimmer of new hope. According to the survey, nearly 80 percent of individuals looking to adopt for the first time would consider adopting a child in foster care, a 7 percent increase since 2012. Rita Soronen, the chief executive of the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption, the organization that commissioned the study, considers this a substantial shift in public attitudes. “Foster care adoption hasn’t always been an easy or pleasant conversation,” she says. “All of us in the child welfare stratosphere have worked hard to educate the public to change misperceptions about foster care adoption and heighten awareness.” Choosing to adopt through the foster care system means accepting that the process, and sometimes the outcome, can be uncertain. Bureaucratic procedures vary from state to state and even county to county, but the practice of concurrent planning, which places children with potential adoptive families before the termination of parental rights, is standard. This approach, designed to reduce the amount of time children spend in the system, investigates options for permanent
reunification with the birth family, while foster parents care for the child and stand ready to adopt that child if parental rights are severed. But even for prospective parents who come with eyes wide open, the experience can be emotionally fraught. “I did a lot of research, so I don’t think there was anything that I wasn’t expecting,” says Kristen Howerton of Orange County, CA, who blogs about her life as a mother at Rage Against the Minivan. Her son Jafta, now 12, is the oldest of her four children and arrived as a foster placement at the age of 6 months. “For three years, we lived with a very big unknown. We were falling in love with this little boy but never sure if he was our permanent son or just a temporary placement. It was hard to be so invested and yet not be able to control any outcomes.” Denise Henderson, a retired psychologist in Rochester, NY, tells a similar story about trying to adopt a younger sibling for her biological son as a single mom. “My daughter came to live with us as a newborn. It took three long years before the courts freed her for adoption. The weight that lifted off me in that moment was incredible. I didn’t realize what a burden I’d been carrying until I no longer had to bear it. Now my daughter is a lovely 13-year-old … of whom I couldn’t be prouder.” For author Jillian Lauren and her husband, Scott Shriner, bassist for the band Weezer, the adoption of a 3-year-old boy named Jovi from Los Angeles County

proved a bit smoother. Jovi had already spent a year and a half in foster care by the time the couple met him, with bureaucratic decision-making regarding his future well underway. The couple also has a son, Tariku, adopted from Ethiopia, an experience that Lauren chronicled in her memoir, Everything You Ever Wanted, but the tremendous need for foster-adoptive families shaped their choice
for their second adoption. “We made a very conscious decision to adopt from foster care,” Lauren says. “We were terrified. We also felt a sense of purpose around it as well that served as an anchor when we were facing uncertainty.” Soronen explains that when society takes the dramatic step of legally terminating parental rights, there’s
an implicit promise of a new family made to that child, a promise that too often is broken. Plenty of prospective parents are open to infants and toddlers, but the average child in foster care is 8 or 9 years old. Sibling groups and kids with special needs may also languish. Even if you’re planning on a hollowedout carving, keep the sweet juicy fruit and make it a healthy addition to your Halloween party menu with a recipe that puts to use all your carving leftovers. Prior to carving, read through all of the directions. Cuts are easiest when the watermelon is at room temperature. Once your handiwork is complete, chill the carving and contents before serving. After drawing your design on the rind, insert toothpicks in key places to guide your cuts. A sharp knife with a pointed tip makes the easiest, cleanest cuts. Remove excess flesh in large pieces, when possible, to allow for easier melon ball or cube creation. Use round toothpicks or skewers to attach pieces to your design as flat toothpicks are not strong enough to bear the weight or stand up to the thickness of the rind.
Supplies and Tools: Oval or round seedless watermelon Cutting board Kitchen knife Small bowl Dry erase marker Paring knife Melon baller, fluted or regular Scoop Assorted peelers Cheesecloth Straight pin Battery-operated candle or light Candy eyeballs or blueberries
Wash watermelon under cool running water and pat dry. On cutting board, place watermelon on its side and use kitchen knife to cut off 1/4-inch to 1/2-inch from bottom (end opposite stem), being careful not to cut too deep into white part of rind. Cut 1/2-inch to 3/4-inch from stem end to create opening large enough to fit small bowl. Using dry erase marker, draw eyes, nose and mouth, along with wavy slits around carving to let more light flow through. Use paring knife to cut out design, being sure to cut through to red fruit.
Meal Times
Use fluted or regular melon baller to hollow out inside of watermelon. Use scoop to remove excess watermelon. Peel green rind off outside of watermelon. (Tip: Different peelers work well for different parts of the watermelon, depending on how flat or round the melon is.) Wrap thin strips of cheesecloth around mummy carving and secure with straight pin, if needed. Put battery-operated candle or light into carving. Fit small bowl into top of carving and trim away excess rind to make bowl fit securely. Fill bowl with melon balls and attach candy or blueberries to make eyes.
Kids Watermelon Pizza Supreme
Servings: 6 1 watermelon slice (8-10 inches around and 1-inch thick), drained 1 cup strawberry preserves 1/2 cup white chocolate chips 1/2 cup raisins 1/2 cup chopped walnuts 1 cup sweetened shredded coconuts Place watermelon slice on serving platter and cut into 6 wedges, leaving in shape of pizza. Spread preserves over watermelon and sprinkle chocolate chips, raisins, walnuts and coconut.

Choosing a Watermelon
With a thick rind covering the fruit inside, you may wonder how to choose the best watermelon at the market. Here are some tips for picking the perfect one: n Look it over. Look for a round, oval or oblong shaped watermelon that is free from bruises, cuts or dents. n Lift it up. The watermelon should be heavy for its size. On average, a 5-pound watermelon yields 15 cups of edible fruit. n Turn it over. The underside of the watermelon should have a creamy yellow spot from where it sat on the ground and ripened in the sun.

Servings: 35-40 1 small watermelon 1 package (3 ounces) watermelon or other red flavor gelatin dessert Using melon baller, scoop out 35-40 small watermelon balls. Place on paper towels and set aside. Pour gelatin into shallow bowl. One-by-one, gently drop watermelon balls into bowl, roll around, take out and place on plate covered with paper towel. Repeat until all gelatin is used. Place plate of frosted watermelon balls in freezer. Allow at least 2 hours to make sure they are completely frozen. Remove from freezer and let sit a few minutes before eating. Note: To serve with toothpicks, place toothpicks in before freezing to aid in serving.

Foster care hope (Continued from pg. 12) devoted to finding homes for children in foster care, the Dave Thomas Foundation has chosen to focus its efforts on these children who might have previously been considered unadoptable. The Wendy’s Wonderful Kids program, named after the restaurant chain founded by Thomas, who was himself an adoptee, seeks families for foster children who are legally free for adoption. The program, which was founded in 2004, has served 16,000 foster children so far. Its caseworkers, known as adoption recruiters, spend time getting to know each child. If a child is reluctant to change schools or doesn’t want to change their name after adoption, those concerns are noted and respected. Recruiters also identify important people in the child’s life, such as former teachers or extended family members, who may be able to help in the search for a new home. There have been 6,494 adop-

tions finalized with 4,300 kids currently looking for permanent homes. Naturally, the foundation wants to see that number increase. Child welfare experts and adoptive parents agree that any child adopted from foster care will have challenges to overcome, no matter the child’s age at placement. Krista Woods, a therapist who has counseled adoptive and birth families for 25 years in the Chicago area, and who was adopted as an infant from foster care, points to a realistic parental attitude as the key. Although parents may feel relief the day the adoption decree is signed, it’s only one milestone in the family’s longer journey. “Meeting children where they are, while supporting and encouraging them to reach for more, is a lifelong process,” says Woods. For parents like Jillian Lauren, the joy of foster adoption is far greater than the struggle. “The minute we looked into our son’s eyes, we knew,” she says. “It’s just been such a special experience, the whole messy thing.”
