Top Ladies of Distinction hosts '2016 Induction Luncheon'

On Saturday, October 15, 2016 Cross Lutheran Church helped celebrate the 36th anniversary of Project Return, held at Marquette University. Launched in October 1980 by a collection of Cross Church members and others from the community, Project Return's purposes is to reach out to the area minimum security prisons to help the inmates with job seeking and other services, to help them have a positive return to the community. A more positive return reduces the chance of re-offending and returning to the prison system. As part of the celebration, two individuals were honored for their volunteer work to further the mission of Project Return. This year's recipients are Oliver Johnson (left) for the Elijah O'Neal Award of Excellence; and Dwayne E. Early (right), who accepted the Don Bein Service Award, on behalf of Hephatha Lutheran Church.

Voting: Five things to do before heading to the polls "The system's rigged!" "The machines will be hacked!" Voters are getting an earful in this campaign. No wonder many are worried whether their ballots will be counted correctly. But if history is any guide, the overwhelming majority of voters will have absolutely no problems at the polls on Election Day. And election experts say many problems that do emerge can easily be fixed. If you plan to vote, here are five things experts say you can do in advance to help ensure a smooth experience. 1. Check your registration One of the biggest problems voters face is that they think they're registered but they're not. Or there's an error in their registration that they didn't know about. Maybe their name is spelled incorrectly, or their address is wrong. The best thing to do is check that you're registered and that the information is correct before you go vote. The registration deadline has passed in a number of states but there's still time in many others. If you find a mistake, you might be able to fix it in any case. Most states allow you to check your registration, and even register online. This

website from the U.S. Election Assistance Commission will link you to your state election website. Those sites will also help you locate where you're supposed to vote (maybe even how to get there) and what hours the polls open and close. 2. Prepare to vote Check the ballot ahead of time to see what races you'll be voting on. This should help lines move more quickly. You should be able to see a sample ballot online — if you haven't already received one in the mail — and information about what type of voting equipment you'll be using. Often, a state or county election office will post a video online showing how the voting machines work. Here's an example of one from Maryland, which recently replaced all of its touchscreen voting machines with paper ballots. There's

a good chance your local election office also has a machine on display somewhere that you can try out ahead of time. Also, know the rules in your state. • Do you need ID? If so, what kind? • Does your state require that you cast your ballot in the right precinct for your vote to count? Some do and some don't. 3. Know your options In most states, you can vote early, or by mail, if you don't want to vote on Election Day. If you vote by mail, make sure you follow the directions carefully. Many ballots are thrown out because voters don't sign their names, or provide all the correct information. You should also know the deadlines for sending in your ballot. When does it have to be received (Continued on pg. 15)

Will you make YOUR voice heard? By Urban Media News Staff Election Day is Tuesday, November 8, 2016. Polls are open from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., If you are in line by 8:00 p.m. you have the right to cast a ballot. But increasingly, voters are not waiting until Election Day to make their voice, and their choice, heard. Early voting is widely accessible across Wisconsin – including in Milwaukee and Madison. As of October 24, more than 250,000 Wisconsinites have already cast their ballot. More than 37,000 Milwaukee County residents and more than 36,000 Dane County residents have already cast their ballot. These early voters in Wisconsin are among the more than 6 million Americans who have already taken advantage of early voting. The ease of early voting, which is currently available every single day until November 4, including weekends, leaves no excuse for not letting your voice be heard in this election. Voters working multiple jobs or juggling school and kids can vote on their schedule, just in case something comes up on Election Day that prevents you from exercising your democratic right.

The Milwaukee Times Weekly Newspaper For the two largest counties in the state, Milwaukee and Dane, voter participation has lagged behind that of other communities. There is a remedy to the frustration those in urban areas often feel over the policies enacted by elected officials: turn out to vote and then get your friends and neighbors to do the same. In 2012, voter participation in Milwaukee ranked just 26th out of 72 counties across Wisconsin. Simply put, voters in urban areas do not vote as frequently as those in more rural areas.

Prayer really makes a difference

We can still expect miracles, we can still hear God’s voice, and our prayers really do make a difference. We want to encourage you to talk to God about anything, but in order to do that, you will need to learn how. You will need to gain an “encouraged and equipped heart.” In these troubled times so many people are dealing with a multitude of issues and dilemmas, including overwhelming depression, fear, worry, anger, betrayal, broken marriages, health crises, financial woes, lost jobs, way-

ward children or grandchildren, broken lives, natural disasters, bad decisions, bad choices, loss of a loved ones and deeply tragic situations, just to name a few. God may or may not answer your prayers the way you want Him to, but He will answer your prayer, and whatever the outcome, it is better than what you were hoping for, because He has your best interest at heart. He can turn your life into a miracle, and He’s ready to do it now. Prayer truly to make something happen; makes things happen. Begin prove Jesus in prayer and

watch Him work a miracle in your life. As you pray, you’ll discover: • God knows where you are. • He hasn’t forgotten you. • He wants you to know how much He loves you. • He wants a closer relationship with you. • He wants to take you on the journey of a lifetime. You might be thinking, this prayer stuff isn’t what I thought it would be. You’re right, it’s even better. Better? Yes, God loves us

They’re your dreams. Start building them. You’ve already dreamed up the blueprints. We may be able to help bring them to life. The U.S. Bank Home Equity Line of Credit offers competitive rates, flexible payment options and trusted service to help you finance the lasting home improvements you’ve always wanted.

with an everlasting love. We were created in His image distinct from all the other creatures on this planet. We have a God consciousness, whereas none of the other of God’s creation has one. We have a distinctive awareness of a higher being, someone outside and distinct from ourselves, someone that should be worshipped. We were born to worship; we were born to pray, so let’s make sure that we are worshipping and praying to Him every chance we get; praying to the Father in the awesome name of Jesus. Remember, fellowship with the Lord is impossible when we are alienated from Him because of sin. Repent that He might forgive us of our sin and hear our prayer. It’s also difficult to achieve fellowship with Him when we feel He is angry at us. Powerful prayer can offer reconciliation. The dictionary defines reconcile as follows: • To reestablish a close relationship • To settle or resolve • To bring oneself to accept • To make compatible or consistent Effective prayer is not prayer that bosses God. It’s something completely different. We must be submissive to His Kingship and honoring to His priesthood. Suggested Scripture References: Matthew 7:7 (KJV) - Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month (Conclusion) In the conclusion of the series on Breast Cancer Awareness Month, this column will look at early detection for women at higher than average risk and conclude with suggestions how to offer spiritual support to a friend or loved one who has been diagnosed with cancer. Screening for women at higher than average risk The American Cancer Society suggests women who are at high risk for breast cancer based on certain factors should get an MRI* and a mammogram every year. This includes women who: • Have a lifetime risk of breast cancer of about 20 percent to 25 percent or greater, according to risk assessment tools that are based mainly on family history. • Have a known BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene mutation. • Have a first-degree relative (parent, brother, sister, or child) with a BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene mutation, and have not had genetic testing themselves. • Had radiation therapy to the chest when they were between the ages of 10 and 30

COMMUNITY COLUMN Family provides focus for new UWM basketball coach By: Howard Magner He’s won before, and LaVall Jordan expects to win again. But as his first season at the University of WisconsinMilwaukee approaches, what matters most to the new head men’s basketball coach is forging the bonds of family within his Milwaukee Panthers team. Jordan was raised by family in the broadest sense, not just by mom and dad, but also by an aunt and uncle, a grandmother and grandfather. At various points during his upbringing, he lived with them all. Each had a distinct impact, and all held him accountable. His uncle, Lige Ridley, insisted on driving him to class every morning rather than letting him take the school bus. His aunt, Jetha Jeffers, had him mow lawns and tend gardens at the properties she owned, often ending his procrastination with a simple statement: The dreading is worse than the doing. “I tell that to my daughters now,” Jordan says. He has three. Always implicit was the message that Jordan’s actions represented his family – mother Karen Jordan and father Nate Mitchell, grandparents Lloyd and

Destinee and LaVall Jordan and their daughters enjoy a sunny moment at their new home. The family moved to Wisconsin this summer, after Jordan was named the new head men’s basketball coach at UW-Milwaukee. (UWM Photo/Troye Fox) JoAnn Mitchell, and on down the line. Also clear was that his accomplishments, or mistakes, reflected on his community. And if his grades weren’t good enough, he would not play basketball. But he played plenty in the south-central Michigan town of Albion, a working-class enclave with a small-town high school that knew big basketball success. In a state title game, he faced future NBA champ Shane Battier, and did so with a broken nose. From there, it was on

to a college career at Butler University. In many ways, Butler is where Jordan became the man he is today. He won 91 games there from 1997-2001, more than any previous Butler player. In 2001, he led the Bulldogs to their first NCAA Tournament victory in 39 years. Later, in 2003, it’s where his coaching career began. But Butler’s biggest effect on Jordan was a personal one: It’s where he met his wife, Destinee. “He says I

was his best recruiting job ever,” she says. Their family grew along with his coaching career, which featured assistant roles at Butler, Iowa and Michigan, and now the head job at UWM. During his six Michigan seasons, the Wolverines reached five NCAA Tournaments. In 2013, they played in the national championship game that his youngest daughter, just 3 months old, watched from the stands. “We joke all the time,” Destinee says, “that he has sons in his job and the ladies at home.” “You do,” LaVall Jordan admits, “end up with two families. You have your basketball family, and your family at home.” But they need not remain separate entities. “You merge them.” The evidence is right there on his phone. He holds it up and swipes through some photographs. There’s a family dinner in April 2016, one interrupted by a phone call offering the UWM job. There are shots of Jordan’s former players at his home reading books with his children. There are texts featuring Bible scriptures, sent daily by a coach from his Butler playing days. It’s that type of tightknit, long-term kinship that

Jordan is determined to create on his UWM team. “You want guys to have that great experience,” Jordan says. “The daily interactions and relationships make that experience for them. The winning makes it, too, but it’s always been about the players for me.” He knows it can happen at UWM – the friendships and camaraderie, the excitement and the winning – not just because he’s seen it before, but because it’s happened at UWM before, too.

Survival is beautiful: Beauty tips during and after chemo A recent study (funded by the Avon Foundation) revealed that African American women are nearly half, 43 percent, as likely to die from breast cancer than White women. In 2013, 230,815 women and 2,109 men in the United States were diagnosed with the cancer that forms in the cells of the breasts. Further, 40,860 women and 464 men in the United States died from breast cancer, reports the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Even more alarming were the findings indicating bustling cities like Atlanta (where Black women are diagnosed with breast cancer at a rate more than twice that of White women), Austin, Dallas, Chicago, Memphis, and Los Angeles, top the list of U.S. cities with the largest breast cancer death disparities. On the flip side, the fiveyear survival rate for women with early-stage breast cancer is 99 percent, says the CDC. With breast cancer awareness month in full swing, we

thought what better time to break down some of the best tips for breast cancer survivors who require chemotherapy? Check out our picks. The eyes have it! While lashes and brows may “disappear” during (and following) chemotherapy, there are many products on the market that can help create the appearance of luscious lash-

es and thick brows. Our pick: Brian Joseph’s Lash and Brow Conditioning Gel, $50, available at Brian Joseph’s. Containing no parabens, petroleum products or propylene “Brian Joseph’s Lash and Brow Conditioning Gel was developed by a medical professional and is ophthalmologist-tested. Our botanical and peptide based for-

mula is non-irritating to eyes and will not irritate sensitive skin,” the website states. As for the benefit, “breakthrough technology” features “reconstructive components that may help maintain lashes and brows during chemotherapy.” No hair—don’t care! I recall a conversation I had with radio personality and breast cancer survivor Ebony Steele years ago where she admitted she really struggled with the thought of losing all her hair. While it’s totally natural for women to place so much pride in their coif, it’s better to come to grips with your new reality, sooner than later. Gather the support of friends and family by hosting a “big chop party” and say hello to the “new you.” Not a fan of the idea of a big chop? Try a cute wig on for size. Our pick: Headcovers Unlimited Wigs and Hair Pieces, beginning at $29.99, available at Headcovers Unlimited Inc. For over 20 years Headcovers has helped select wigs

for cancer patients and other individuals dealing with hair loss—ensuring each piece reflects the patient’s unique persona. Go for the glow! According to the American Cancer Society, chemo can be extremely harsh on skin, leaving you with dry, flaky and discolored dermis. Get an edge up on skin woes by moisturizing daily. Also, don’t forget to apply sunscreen, as chemo treatments make skin more susceptible to sun damage (protection against UVA requires ingredients such as zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, or avobenzone). Our pick: Recovery Skin Cream, $15.99, available at Cure Diva. Developed by a breast cancer survivor and her chemist husband, this formula is a real gift for those suffering the after-effects of radiation therapy including dry, itchy, red and sore skin.

Managing your diabetes during the holidays Prepare to manage your diabetes during the holidays. Stay on track by taking medications on schedule and choosing healthy versions of favorite dishes. Remember to plan daily physical activities, like walking after meals and dancing at festivities. Having diabetes shouldn't stop you from enjoying holiday celebrations and travel. With some planning and a little preparation, you can stay healthy on the road and at holiday gatherings with friends and family. Preparation is the most important step in managing diabetes during holiday travel and festivities. Know what you'll be eating, how to enjoy a few traditional favorites while sticking with a healthy meal plan, how to pack necessary supplies for a trip, and you're ready to celebrate! Feasts and parties Before you go, take these steps to ensure you stick to your healthy meal plan. • Eat a healthy snack early to avoid overeating at the party. • Ask what food will be served, so you can see how it fits into your meal plan. • Bring a nutritious snack

or dish for yourself and others. You don't have to give up all of your holiday favorites if you make healthy choices and limit portion sizes. At a party or holiday gathering, follow these tips to avoid overeating and to choose healthy foods. • If you're at a buffet, fix your plate and move to another room away from the food, if possible. Choose smaller portions. • Choose low-calorie drinks such as sparkling water, unsweetened tea or diet beverages. If you choose to drink alcohol, limit the amount, and have it with food. Talk with your health care team about

whether alcohol is safe for you. Limit it to one drink a day for women, two for men, and drink only with a meal. • Watch out for heavy holiday favorites such as hams with a honey glaze, turkey swimming in gravy and side dishes loaded with butter, sour cream, cheese, or mayonnaise. Instead, choose skinless turkey without gravy, or other lean meats. • Look for side dishes and vegetables that are light on butter, dressing, and other extra fats and sugars, such as marshmallows or fried vegetable toppings. • Watch the salt. Some holiday dishes are made with prepared foods high in sodi-

um. • Choose fresh or frozen vegetables with no sauce to keep your sodium intake down. • Select fruit instead of pies, cakes and other desserts high in fat, cholesterol, and sugar. • Focus on friends, family, and activities instead of food. Take a walk after a meal, or join in the dancing at a party. Traveling for the holidays Leaving home to visit friends and family means changing routines. Take care of your diabetes while traveling. • Check your blood glucose (sugar) more often than usual, because changing your schedule can affect levels. • Remember your medication. • Pack twice the amount of diabetes supplies you expect to need in your carry-on bag, in case of travel delays. • Keep snacks, glucose gel, or tablets with you in case your blood glucose drops. • Make sure you keep your health insurance card and emergency phone numbers handy, including your doctor's name and phone number. • Carry medical identification that says you have diabetes and wear medical identification jewelry. • Keep time zone changes in mind so you'll know when to take medication. • If you use insulin, make sure you also pack a glucagon emergency kit. • Keep your insulin cool by packing it in an insulated bag with refrigerated gel packs. • Get an influenza vaccination before traveling, unless

your medical provider instructs otherwise. Healthy routines • Wash your hands often with soap and water. Try to avoid contact with sick people. • Reduce your risk for blood clots by moving around every hour or two. • Pack a small cooler of foods that may be difficult to find while traveling, such as fresh fruit and sliced raw vegetables. Pack dried fruit, nuts, and seeds as snacks. Since these foods can be high in calories, measure out small portions (¼ cup) in advance. • If you're driving, bring a few bottles of water instead of sweetened soda or juice. If you're flying, choose unsweetened beverages on board. • If you're flying and don't want to walk through the metal detector with your insulin pump, tell a security officer that you're wearing an insulin pump and ask them to visually inspect the pump and do a full-body pat-down. • Place all diabetes supplies in carry-on luggage. Keep medications and snacks at your seat for easy access. Don't store them in overhead bins. • Have all syringes and insulin delivery systems (including vials of insulin) clearly marked with the pharmaceutical preprinted label that identifies the medications, in the original pharmacy labeled packaging. • If a meal will be served during your flight, call ahead for a diabetic, low fat, or low cholesterol meal. If the airline doesn't offer a meal, bring a nutritious meal yourself. • Wait until your food is about to be served before you take your insulin. • When drawing up your dose of insulin, don't inject air into the bottle (the air on your plane will probably be pressurized). • Stick with your routine for staying active. Get at least 150 minutes of physical activity every week. Ten minutes at a time is fine.

They are NOT supposed to interfere with voters or the voting process. Perhaps the best way to see what goes on at the polls is to volunteer to be a poll worker. Poll workers are the volunteers who set up the machines, greet you at the registration desk, help you get your ballot, collect it after you've voted and generally assist voters. There's still time to sign up and election officials are always looking for help on Election Day. "It's the best way to gain confidence in the process because you learn it inside and out," says Masterson.
