Mask mandate reinstated on Milwaukee County buses

On Sept. 30, the county allowed buses to become mask optional. Two weeks later masks returned

Masks are back on Mil waukee County buses. The county announced the man date on Friday, October 14, 2022, after the COVID-19 community level rose back into the "medium" category from "low."

On Sept. 30, the county had announced that masks would be optional.

In a statement, Milwau kee County said "Milwaukee County and MCTS will con tinue to provide guidance as COVID-19 rates remain flu id. MCTS supplies masks on buses and asks riders to prac tice safe riding habits and re

spect fellow passengers."

The mask mandate went into effect immediately.

The city of Milwaukee also announced that the COVID-19 community level had risen back into the "me dium" level.

Denita Ball becomes Acting Milwaukee County Sheriff: 'I am honored'

Denita Ball will be the first female and fourth African American sheriff of Milwaukee County.

Denita R. Ball officially assumed the role of acting Milwaukee County Sher iff on Monday, October 24, 2022, after Earnell R. Lucas resigned from the position.

Ball won about 56 percent of the vote in the Democratic primary, beating candidates Captain Thomas Beal and Inspector Brian Barkow. Ball will be by herself on the Nov. 8 ballot, meaning she will transition from an acting to permanent role following the election.

On Friday, October 21, 2022, Earnell Lucas an nounced he would retire as sheriff on Sunday, Oct. 23. He said in a statement he has taken a job as Fiserv's Vice President of Security for Wisconsin. Lucas worked in law enforcement for 46 years and served as the Milwaukee County Sheriff for the last four years.

Ball will be the first female and fourth African American sheriff of Milwaukee County.

"We have all heard the adage that with great power comes great responsibility, and it is my responsibili ty and my promise to work

with the men and women of this great agency to promote best practices, bolster their ranks, and improve working conditions," Ball said in a statement.

Ball grew up in a small town in Arkansas before making her way to Milwau kee and joining the police department, where she spent more than 25 years working her way up the ranks.

She then pursued a career in higher education and earned a Ph.D., at Cardinal Stritch University.

In 2018, Ball became the highest-ranking woman in the Milwaukee County Sher iff's Office under Sheriff Ear nell Lucas.

"I didn't have the best background, the best up bringing. I had some chal lenges that I overcame and so as long as people see that and know that I was able to do that and then it may give them some hope," Ball said in an interview with TMJ4 News last August.

Ball's priority as sheriff is making sure the jail is prop erly staffed.

"I think that our criti cal staffing level there is the cause of a lot of other issues that we're having," said Ball.

As she gets to work Ball had this advice for people on their journey.

"You can be whatever you want to be. Know what your passion is. Be prepared. You may never get that opportu nity but prepare yourself in case you do. Whatever you decide to do be the best that you can be," Ball said in the TMJ4 interview.

Ball described her man agement style as hands-on and collaborative. She will be sworn into office in January.

many

Americans believe about race. This dissertation will deal solely with things African Americans tell them selves and each other daily. This piece will not deal with any religious beliefs or legal ities. Instead we will look at a few things that African Americans accept and do to themselves and tell each oth er. Let’s start with clothing styles.

African American males have adopted a new grimy look in fashion. Many teen African American males go off to school or work looking like bums. Let me expand the parameters of the age group. Many teen, early adult and grown African American males dress like bums. For some reason wearing slides

with socks has become a fashion rage. You see African American males going into restaurants with slides and socks on. In many cases the socks are dingy or plain dirty. Keep in mind these are males from a race that made alliga tor, snake and ostrich shoes famous. Yet, instead of these slide wearers being laughed at or ostracized, they are ac cepted. African Americans believe this look is a positive fashion statement. This is a lie. Yet, African Americans believe this falsehood. Is this not an aspect of insanity?

Let’s look at the average Af rican American male's outfit. You will see African Ameri can males of all ages wearing NBA style shorts and gym shoes, when not wearing slides and socks. This leads to the question, “Where is that grown man going dressed like he is going to play bas ketball somewhere?” The answer is, everywhere. You see African American males dressed like they are heading to the NBA combine in ev ery social aspect of US soci ety. You will see a variation of this look at malls, restau

rants, even church. When an African American male has these type of clothes on, other African Americans will tell him he is “dripped out.” This means he is dressed to the “T”. Another lie that Af rican Americans believe. In sanity is knocking at the door African American males.

The African American fe male has some insanity traits also. The fake hair or weave is the craziest sign of insani ty African American females partake in. You see African American females wearing weave, sew in, or flat out wigs daily. The insane part of this is African Americans tell these women with fake hair, “Your hair looks nice today.”

Hold on. How can this per son’s hair look nice when it isn’t theirs? To add to the insanity, many women braid their real hair up and put the fake hair over their real hair. African American fe males who do this claim that it takes too long to do their hair. Yet, these same females, wash the fake hair, style it, like the hair was growing out of their scalp. These same fe males with these long tresses of fake hair fondle, play with the hair all day. You see these weave, wig wearers snapping selfies of themselves for social media posts. Many of these posts will get likes and com ments saying how great their hair looks. Lies. All lies that many African American fe

I won’t talk about the tight clothes and obesity levels that are signs of insanity in all Af rican Americans. I will say this. African Americans need to stop lying to themselves and each other. Tell that dude who is 40 plus years old, “Man, go take those kid clothes off.” Tell that African American female who is wearing a pink wig, “You look stupid. What are you trying to do, be bubble gum?” Remember African Americans, before you tell someone else to stop lying to themselves, you have to tell the person in the mirror.

The University of Wis consin-Milwaukee (UWM) welcomed students in the Milwaukee Public School's (MPS) Black and Latino Male Achievement program in Oc tober to provide support and inspiration toward positive career journeys. About 250 students from nine MPS schools arrived by bus at the UWM Student Union where they toured the campus, met with mentors, learned about college life, and considered career options.

Now in its sixth year, the MPS Black and Latino Male Achievement (BLMA) De partment offers program ming to help male high school students of color to be inspired, achieve, and plan their futures. Events throughout the school year, including mentor luncheons, connect teens with volun teers from professional com munities who share their per sonal stories of struggle and success.

“The camaraderie built through our programs really makes a difference for these students,” said Paul Moga, BLMA Coordinator. “This event allows our young men

to see themselves on campus with their peers. Experienc es like this help them real ize that college is a place for them and they will get the supports they need.”

MPS Black and Latino Male Achievement (BLMA) Department events over the past years have been rich and diverse, and boys have expressed appreciation for hearing how men have over come obstacles and achieved success. Topics have includ ed:

• Perspectives on authority and power, and appropri ate and inappropriate use of both

• Discussions on the im portance of cultural identity, self-esteem, and self-care for manhood

• The meaning of father hood and the responsi bilities of parenting

• Employment and careers, and understanding how public school education is a starting point to an ongoing road to success.

BLMA seeks mentors for this life-changing program.

tion, and its treatment op tions. We needed to know the challenges and successes around breast cancer from a black perspective. In the pro cess, they taught ALL OF US how to be courageous and unashamed.

While Ms. Leigh-Gold and Ms. White spoke primarily to women, we know that men also get breast cancer. Oc tober is BREAST HEALTH MONTH and a time to re member that breast cancer is not a respecter of gender nor socio-economic status. But if found early, it is highly treat

able and, in some cases, can even be cured. MONTHLY SELF-EXAMS – looking for changes in size or density, or the presence of swelling or lumps – is beneficial for peo ple of all genders. If you find something, say something! Contact a healthcare profes sional right away. And start ing on your 40th birthday, give yourself the gift of an ANNUAL MAMMOGRAM

We all know cancer sur vivors today who are living strong, quality lives – moth ers, sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins, staffers, and col

leagues. We APPLAUD EACH OF YOU who have been able to ring the cancer completion bell that signifies you’re on your way, again.

Today we celebrate Terri, a former Milwaukee Com munity Journal staffer, who decided to be tested after an October advertising blast a couple of years ago. She test ed positive but got the help she needed without delay. THE GOOD NEWS: Terri is doing well! She has a whole new life, a healthy life. She celebrates joy, every day! And we celebrate her. And we cel ebrate you!

The ALL OF US RE SEARCH PROGRAM knows that success stories like Terri’s were made pos sible by research. Research discoveries have advanced clinical practice in cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. To continue mov ing forward, we need re search that includes EVERY ONE – especially those who have been left out in the past.
