Mayor Barrett hosts faith leaders for Strong Baby Educational Luncheon Partnership with Columbia St. Mary’s focuses on preventable causes of infant death

On Tuesday, October 7, 2014 Mayor Tom Barrett hosted local faith leaders and health experts at an educational luncheon to discuss the leading causes of infant death in Milwaukee: premature births and unsafe sleeping environments. The luncheon, held with support of the Columbia St. Mary’s Foundation, took place prior to the Strong Baby Sabbath, the fourth annual collaboration with Columbia St. Mary’s and the faith community that will be held on Sunday, Oct. 12, 2014. The effort supports Mayor Barrett’s goal of reducing Milwaukee’s overall infant mortality rate by 10 percent and the African American infant mortality rate by 15 percent by 2017. It also supports the goal to reduce racial disparities in birth outcomes,

set by the Milwaukee Lifecourse Initiative for Healthy Families, which is co-chaired by Mayor Barrett and led by United Way of Greater Milwaukee and funded by the Wisconsin Partnership Program. Preliminary data indicates that 117 infants died before their first birthdays in 2013, with nearly 60 percent of all infant deaths and 66 percent of African American infant deaths a result of complications of prematurity. Additionally, half of sleep-related infant deaths in Milwaukee occur to infants who were born prematurely, making prematurity a significant risk factor for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDs) and accidental suffocation. The annual event was planned cooperatively by Columbia St. Mary’s Urban Church Wellness Program,

Mother Patricia Robinson (seated left) held the hand of her brother, Assistant Pastor Darrell Grayson of Heritage International Ministries who was the keynote speaker, on Sunday, October 5, 2014, during the concluding program of a Birthday Celebration spanning three days, held in her honor at Now Unto Him Ministries located at 2807 W. Elder Wallace Drive. “Beauty is only skin deep” was the program theme. During opening remarks, Apostle Robinson who is the husband and pastor of Now Unto Him Ministries was unabashed in describing Mother Robinson. “I have a very beautiful and lovely wife and it’s an honor to celebrate this great woman of God. I love my beautiful wife. She is my crown and I don’t know what I would do without her. I like her voice and she is my heart and she makes me sick and wants to live. They don’t make ‘em like that anymore. If a man doesn’t have anything good to say about his wife, something is wrong, because there is a dead cat on the line. Complimenting your wife just ought to roll off your tongue and that’s what it’s supposed to be like. We must be an example for young people. Marriage is a ministry. Every opportunity I get to say something about my wife makes me happy. I’m just like Ferrell; I’m Happy.”

Getting it together

All across Milwaukee these days, there appears to be a renewed sense of urgency to get things done to improve the quality of life of residents in the city. At first, I thought it was the weather, the upcoming November elections or the need of nearly everybody wanting to be seen doing something or to be heard. But I believe and this is just me, that there seems to be more people who are seeing a need to become more engaged and to collaborate with others in order to solve many of the lagging problems facing the largest city of Wisconsin. During this year along, there have been a record number of community and town hall meetings sponsored by public officials at every level. Additionally, there have been numerous

agencies and organizations across the city providing outreach, organizing, workshops, seminars and fairs on topics of health care screening, employment, education, housing, credit repair, safety, youth services, veterans and aging. In addition, many religious groups, churches, nonprofits and charities have provided an array of spiritual, counseling, and support services to individuals, families in crisis and victims of domestic violence. It has been wonderful to see; I completely promote and support such efforts. What else has been encouraging to witness is the number of local mass media resources, including radio, TV, and newspapers helping to promote and report on many of these noteworthy events and more. Even more re-

Being Frank

In today’s society you have to have some form of identification. Many Americans have either a driver’s license or a state identification card. The act of having an ID card should be common sense in a society where identities are stolen. The state of Wisconsin has created laws requiring voters to show a form of legal ID in order to vote. The act of having ID should be normal and a fairly easy thing for voters to produce at the polls. It seems normal isn’t the norm these days. Since the right to vote was given to minorities there have been claims that certain groups were being denied the right to vote. These claims have been made on both national and state levels. At one time certain people had to show the ability to read and comprehend to vote. Those interventions have

vealing has been that what is happening in Milwaukee has also gained some national attention. This national attention has attracted a number of high profile personalities, award winning writers, noted researchers and political officials to visit, make presentations and give inspiring speeches. This kind of attention can get addictive and signal a movement that we have not seen in years. This new movement is about human

awaiting for a long time and is long overdue. The push for such reforms is coming from the new and upcoming generations of millennials, Gen Y and Gen Z. They are becoming more demanding and expecting more accountability from the previous generation of “baby boomers.” So, I say... let’s join this new movement and give a boost to what can only improve the quality of life for all in Milwaukee. What do you think? Dr. Andrew Calhoun, can be contacted at andrewiiicalhoun@ gmail.com, Twitter #AC53, or call 414-571-5015. You can hear Dr. Calhoun each Sunday at Grace Fellowship Church, 3879 N. Get an ID card

SAMPLE been wiped out. The need to express literacy to vote has been replaced by showing a valid form of ID card. This seems to be a harder task than reading Shakespeare. It seems there is a group of people in the United States that are always complaining when it is time to vote. Every law that is passed to ensure the ballots are secure

rights, which includes a call for justice, equal treatment and the right to be heard. At the base of this movement is how we are treating each other, calls for unity, personal liberties, respect of family and getting back to the fundamentals of what it takes to make a good society. While this new movement is taking shape, which is being born out of frustration, disappointment in elected officials and the political process, disenfranchisement, ongoing injustice, wealth disparity, and exclusion from livable wage employment...this new movement is gaining steam. What is more amazing about this new movement is that it is for real, has foot soldiers, advocates, an agenda and an open forum. For many of us, this awakening is something we have been

seems to be aimed at them. If it’s not the times the polls are open it is the look on the poll worker's face. It would seem the act of having an ID card would be normal just to cash checks or pick up mail from the post office. Why has this simple thing become an issue for voting? If you know or think someone is trying to keep

you from something then shouldn’t you be prepared for any obstacles? The need for an ID card to vote has been tossed around for the last few elections. With this in mind the people who say they embrace the right to vote had to know this measure was going to come into play. With this common knowledge in mind why not prepare for it by getting an ID card? How does one get a magical ID card? It’s a simple process unless you don’t have proof of residence. If you can’t provide proof of residence then should you be voting? The complaint also includes those who want to fill out absentee ballots. Is it asking too much to send a copy of your ID card with your vote to ensure that your candidate doesn’t get cheated? If voting means so much to a person wouldn’t they do what is necessary to keep their privilege? The elderly are often cited as the victim of voter ID laws. This may be true but there are elderly people who still have driver’s licenses. In-

stead of complaining the act of getting proper ID cards for elderly family members can be used as quality time. Many elderly people rarely get out of the house; acquiring an ID card can be an opportunity to interact in society. The act of getting their own ID card may also give an elderly person a sense of pride and achievement. The right to vote is one many cherish. Don’t let it be taken from you over a simple technicality that can be so easily avoided. There is still time to get an ID card for those who don’t have it. To wait for a court ruling to solve a problem that may cost you an hour is utter foolishness. Breast Cancer Awareness Month (Part II) What percentage of women between the ages of 40 and 64 reported getting a mammogram in the past year? A. 25% B. 47% C. 56% D. 100% Answer: C — 56%. While research shows that cancer screenings, such as mammography, can save lives, not all women have access to these lifesaving tests. Uninsured women are half as likely as those with private health insurance to have received a mammogram in the past year. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is an annual campaign to increase awareness of the disease. While most people are aware of breast cancer, many forget to take the steps to have a plan to detect the disease in its early stages and encourage others to do the same. In Part II of this series, the American Cancer Society recommends the following guidelines for finding breast cancer early in women

without symptoms: Mammogram: Women age 40 and older should have a mammogram every year and should continue to do so for as long as they are in good health. While mammograms can miss some cancers, they are still a very good way to find breast cancer. Clinical breast exam: Women in their 20s and 30s should have a clinical breast exam (CBE) as part of a regular exam by a health expert, preferably every 3 years. Starting at age 40, women should have a breast exam by a health expert every year. You can use the exam to learn what your own breasts look and feel like. It might be a good idea to have the CBE shortly before the mammogram. Breast self-exam (BSE): BSE is an option for women starting in their 20s. Women should be told about the benefits and limitations of BSE. Women should report any changes in how their breasts look or feel to a doc-

tor or nurse right away. If you decide to do BSE, you should have your doctor or nurse check your method to make sure you are doing it right. If you do BSE on a regular basis, you get to know how your breasts normally look and feel. Then you can more easily notice changes. But it's OK not to do BSE or not do it on a fixed schedule. The most important thing is to see a doctor right away if you notice any of these changes in your breasts:

• A lump or swelling • Skin irritation or dimpling • Nipple pain or the nipple turning inward • Redness or scaliness of the nipple or breast skin • A discharge other than breast milk The American Cancer Society indicates that most of the time these breast changes are not cancer. Always consult your physician whenever you have any concerns. October also shares the month with National Domestic Abuse Awareness

By adopting habits of success, students progress from earning positive points and school-wide acknowledgements to becoming more wellrounded citizens who demonstrate these habits in their way of being. Students invited to apply to MPS’ early admissions high schools with entrance requirements

Applications for 2015-16 due Nov. 1; new online application allows students to apply to multiple schools

Milwaukee Public Schools is inviting students and families interested in the district’s early admissions high schools with entrance requirements to apply in time for the November 1 deadline. A new online application allows students to apply to multiple schools for the upcoming 2015-16 school year. The application is located at http://mps.milwaukee.k12. wi.us/en/Schools/EarlyAdmissions. The six early admissions high schools with entrance requirements are: • Rufus King International High School • Golda Meir School • Milwaukee High School of the Arts • Morse Marshall School for the Gifted and Talented • Ronald Reagan College Preparatory High School • Riverside University High School “Milwaukee Public Schools is home to a number of the state’s best high schools and we invite families to learn more about all of our options, including neighborhood high schools and specialty high schools,” MPS Superintendent Dr. Darienne Driver said. MPS’ high school students

have posted the largest gains in reading proficiency across the district, including a threepercentage-point gain from fall 2012 to fall 2013. Students interested in early admissions schools with entrance requirements must apply by November 1 because the schools have admissions processes that take place prior to the district’s Three-Choice Enrollment process in February 2015. Three-Choice allows families to select neighborhood and specialty schools other than those mentioned above. The district will provide information about other high school open houses and middle school open houses in the coming weeks. Each of the six early admissions schools will host at least one open house or audition workshop in October, followed by essay sessions, an essay deadline or an audition. Students do not need to attend an open house in order to apply or to participate in an essay session. Dates and times of open houses, audition workshops, essay sessions and auditions are available at http://mps. milwaukee.k12.wi.us/en/ Schools/EarlyAdmissions.

At some point in our lives many Americans will have to have a test for glaucoma, or for ceratin types of cancer. But usually most those test don't come until we are older. But because of the health disparities, lifestyle differences and unique social stresses experienced by African Americans, many health organizations and physicians are recommending that these common test be done sooner than later. Blood pressure More than 40 percent of non-Hispanic blacks have high blood pressure, and develop it earlier in life. If you have additional high risk factors like diabetes or obesity, screenings may need to start earlier than the recommended age of 21. in African Americans than in Caucasians. Breast Cancer AA testing age: Monthly self exam starting at 20; mammography at 35 Other groups: 40 Breast cancer is the second most common cause of cancer death among African American women, surpassed only by lung cancer, cites Sisters Network, Inc., a breast cancer organization for Black women. Colon Cancer age: 45 Other groups: 40 According to Cancer.Net, Black people have the highest rates of non-hereditary colorectal cancer in the United States, and colon cancer is a leading cause of cancerrelated deaths among black people. Prostate Cancer AA testing age: 40-45 (high risk) Other groups: 50 (average risk) Black men develop prostrate cancer 60 percent more often than White men.
