On Friday, October 27, 2017, Mayor Tom Barrett (center), the Milwaukee Lifecourse Initiative for Healthy Families; City of Milwaukee Health Department Commissioner Bevan K. Baker, FACHE (left); City of Milwaukee Tobacco-Free Alliance and Deputy Fire Chief Aaron Lipski (right) joined together to launch a new phase of the citywide Strong Baby campaign at the Hillside Family Resource Center, 1452 N. 7th Street. With a message that “Smoke-Free Homes Promote Strong Babies,” the campaign will call on families to make their homes smoke-free for healthier birth outcomes and healthy infants. The campaign seeks to raise awareness that smoking while pregnant is a significant risk factor for premature births, and second-hand smoke can cause serious health problems and increase risk of sleep-related infant deaths. The campaign will be seen on transit shelters citywide, social media, and directly to families through programs and outreach efforts.

Fats Domino, piano-playing prodigy 'Benson' star Robert Guillaume and rock and roll legend, dies at 89 dead at 89 Domino inspired rock legends like Elvis Presley and help rebuild New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina Fats Domino, the New Orleans rhythm-and-blues singer whose two-fisted boogie-woogie piano and nonchalant vocals heard on dozens of hits made him one of the biggest stars of the early rock ’n’ roll era, died on Tuesday, October 24, 2017 at his home in Harvey, LA, across the Mississippi River from New Orleans. He was 89. His death was confirmed by the Jefferson Parish coroner’s office. Mr. Domino had more than three dozen Top 40 pop hits through the 1950s and early ’60s, among them Blueberry Hill, Ain’t It a Shame (also known as Ain’t That a Shame, which is the actual lyric), I’m Walkin, Blue Monday and Walkin’ to New Orleans. Throughout he displayed both the buoyant spirit of New Orleans, his hometown, and a droll resilience that reached listeners worldwide. He sold 65 million singles in those years, with 23 gold records, making him second only to Elvis Presley as a commercial force. Pres-

Fats Domino ley acknowledged Mr. Domino as a predecessor. “A lot of people seem to think I started this business,” Presley told Jet magazine in 1957. “But rock ’n’ roll was here a long time before I came along. Nobody can sing that

Being Frank The professional athlete in the USA is one of the most idolized beings on the planet. When Jackie Robinson integrated Major League Baseball he opened the door for blacks in baseball. Kenny Washington was the first black signed in the modern NFL. Earl Lloyd was the first black person to play in an NBA game. These men paved the way for thousands of African Americans to play professional sports. What no one understood until recently was that the pro athlete is nothing more than a high priced slave. African Americans ought to get on their knees and thank President Trump. Trump is bringing to light all of the racist thought that has been hiding behind Caucasian smiles. With Trump in office people can openly display their thought process without reprisal. Trump is literally tearing away the illusion many African Americans have lived under the past 25 years. The illusion that everything was fine and dandy in the USA. The African American myth stating if you are educated and speak proper English you are a part of society. African Americans are a part of society but not one of honor. Trump recently made statements about NFL players and the National Anthem. The NFL is big business around the world. The majority of players are African American. Trump basically said that the owners

Robert Guillaume, who rose from squalid beginnings in St. Louis slums to become a star in stage musicals and win Emmy Awards for his portrayal of the sharp-tongued butler in the TV sitcoms Soap and Benson, has died at age 89. Guillaume died at home Tuesday, October 24, 2017, in Los Angeles, according to his widow, Donna Brown Guillaume. He had been battling prostate cancer, she told The Associated Press. Among Guillaume's achievements was playing Nathan Detroit in the first all-black version of Guys and Dolls, earning a Tony nomination in 1977. He became the first African American to sing the title role of Phantom of the Opera, appearing with an all-white cast in Los Angeles. While playing in Guys and Dolls, he was asked to test for the role of an acerbic butler of a governor's mansion in Soap, a primetime TV sitcom that satirized soap operas. "The minute I saw the script, I knew I had a live one," he recalled in 2001. "Every role was written against type, especially Benson, who wasn't subser-

Robert Guillaume vient to anyone. To me, Benson was the revenge for all those stereotyped guys who looked like Benson in the '40s and '50s (movies) and had to keep their mouths shut." The character became so popular that ABC was persuaded to launch a spinoff, simply called Benson, which lasted from 1979 to 1986. The series made Guillaume wealthy and famous, but he regretted that Benson's wit had to be toned down to make him more appealing as the lead star. (Continued on pg. 15)

Professional slaves owner to go to hell and quit playing? How will the 2017 athlete separate himself from the ignorant slave of the past in actions and words? I think we both know the answer. There will be a few who act like Nat Turner and rebel. The majority will duck their heads and play harder. I concede that there are white athletes in all sports. There were also white slaves in the past. 'Indentured servants' was the title they held.

should get their players in line. Trump called it firing the players but the message was simple. Owner: act like a man, a white man, and get these blacks in line. There was outrage in the NFL. Some teams refused to come out. There was kneeling and praying. Al Sharpton may even form a march. The message was clear. Get these high priced slaves in line. Before the trouble could get to the NBA commissioner Adam Silver squashed it. Silver informed the press that all NBA players would be standing at the singing of the National Anthem; no questions asked. The NBA has a rule in place requiring this of their personnel. The NFL doesn’t, at least not at this time. The NFL is run by owners who are predominately white. There may be another race in the owner’s box but it isn’t African American. Trump’s verbal salvo was a challenge to

these owners manhood. Will the owners fold and let the slaves run the plantation or crack the whip? Many will say that I am being harsh in calling the players slaves. If you look at sports the similarities to slavery are many. The owners meet at a certain area and run the prize chattel through courses and check their health. The draft combine serves this purpose in 2017 pro sports. In the past the function was served at the slave auction. The prize slaves were given the best clothes and housing on the plantation. In 2017 take a gander at any pro athlete’s house and clothing. Is the picture coming into focus? The difference is the reaction to the owner cracking the whip. In the past slaves had no choice but to do what Master said. In 2017 the athlete does have a choice. The question is how far will the 2017 athlete go? Will the 2017 athlete tell the Master/

But doesn’t this enforce the slavery comparison? The Counseling Corner

By Rev. Judith T. Lester, B.Min. M.Th

God’s divine fruit basket (Week 1) The Apostle Paul lists the fruit of the Spirit in Galatians 5:22-23. They are: love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness and temperance. Although there are nine fruit, they are to be referred to in the singular as it symbolizes a harmony between all the other fruit. This month this writer is going to examine God’s divine fruit basket. We will briefly analyze each fruit and challenge the believer to inspect the fruit on their spiritual tree. The Lord Jesus said those who belong to Him will be known by their fruit (Matthew 7:20). As we grow and mature in Christ, the fruit of the Holy Spirit will become more and more evident in our lives. The fruit of love The first fruit mentioned in Paul’s list is the fruit of love. It is appropriate to be first because love is the parent of all other fruit. All spiritual fruit grows out of the soil of love. In the Greek, there are several types of love: Phileo, Eros, and Agape are the main ones. The word Paul uses in Galatians 5 is agape. Agape is brotherly

but can only truly be known by our actions. The fruit of joy Joy is not happiness. Happiness is an outward condition that is based on our happenings at the time. Happiness is a circumstance-related emotion. When things are going well, we are happy. Joy is that inward peace that is not affected by our circumstances. Real joy comes from God. “Be joyful always.” (1 Thessalonians 5:16.) Joy is a gift that is meant to be shared. There are so many people who need to experience joy in their lives, we need to share this gift with others. Joy is one of the fruits of the Spirit that will attract others to want to come to Jesus. love, affection, good will, love, benevolence. The greatest definition of love (agape) in human relationship ever penned is found in the hymn of 1 Corinthians 13: “Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. Love does not demand its own way. Love is not irritable, and it keeps no record of when it has been wronged. It is never glad

about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.” True love for God is expressed in our obedience to God. True love for man (good or bad, friend or enemy) is expressed in our attitudes and actions. Love certainly includes our feelings toward God and man

Hero’s Haul funds will purchase winter coats for MPS students For the second year, Operation Warm hosted the Hero’s Haul Fire Truck Pull to raise funds to purchase winter coats for Milwaukee children. Ten MPS schools will benefit from this fundraiser. On Saturday, September 30, three MPS teams competed at the Milwaukee Brewing Company against 10 other teams to see who could be the fastest to pull a fire truck – yes, a real fire truck – a distance of 75 feet. MPS’ Mighty Men, led by Board of School Directors President Mark Sain and Milwaukee Recreation’s Leighton Cooper, represented MPS well by reaching the semi-finals before falling to Milwaukee Fire Department’s Rescue 2, the overall winner of the competition. The MPS Driven Divas, led by Chief of Staff Gina Spang and Business, Community and Family Partnerships Director Kellie Sigh,

along with Team I Think I Can, led by BCFP Alumni Engagement Associate Kaylin Jones, did not place, but were MPS Proud in their red MPS Heart of Milwaukee t-shirts. During the week of November 13, students in grades K4 through 5 at Bethune, Carver, Clarke, Doerfler, Grantosa, Green Bay, Lafollette, River Trail, Sherman, and Vieau schools will receive brand new winter coats delivered by members of the Milwaukee Fire Department. A huge thank you to all who competed in this year’s fun-filled, action-packed, and extremely competitive event, and an even bigger thank you to Operation Warm. Staff and families are encouraged to mark their calendars, gather a team of ten individuals, and participate in next year’s Hero’s Haul.

What happens to your body when the seasons change In the words of Sam Cooke, “a change gonna come.” A change of seasons that is. Believe it or not, we are approaching the close of the year. That said, come November clocks jump back an hour, marking the end of daylight savings time. “Daylight hours are shorter during fall and winter which results in people having to rise before sunrise and end their work day in the dark,” Carolyn Dean, MD, ND, medical director of the Nutritional Magnesium Association, a stress management expert, and author of The Complete Natural Medicine Guide to Women’s Health and The Magnesium Miracle, tells BlackDoctor.org. As you may already know, a lack of sunshine can increase feelings of depression, tiredness, and even increase the urge to chow down on carbs. Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a type of depression

that comes and goes with the seasons, typically starting in the late fall and early winter and going away during the spring and summer, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. So, what

do experts have to say about how the change in seasons will impact both your sleep patterns and mood? “Vitamin D and magnesium are important for serotonin production, and serotonin is important for many functions including the sleep-wake cycles. Our main source of vitamin D is sunlight, fall and winter results in a deficiency,” said Dr. Dean. “Lower vitamin D levels have also been linked to greater daytime drowsiness, and changes in light-dark cycles can also affect when your body releases melatonin making you feel tired earlier or later than usual,” added Dr. Dean. “Magnesium converts vitamin D into its active

form and is essential for the metabolism of vitamin D. Magnesium regulates melatonin production. All the enzymes that metabolize vitamin D require magnesium.” In addition to combating drowsiness, “Magnesium is known as the anti-stress, anti-anxiety mineral and is a natural way to boost your mood and cope with seasonal sleep pattern changes,” revealed Dr. Dean. “Numerous studies have shown its effectiveness in boosting mood, lowering anxiety, depression and reducing stress levels as well as helping with deeper more restful sleep.” Believe it or not, “most Americans are magnesium deficient because this min-

eral has been depleted from our soils and foods.” In fact, “over 75 percent of Americans do not get their recommended daily allowance of this mineral which is a co-factor in 700-800 enzyme reactions in the body,” said Dr. Dean. How may a magnesium deficiency further impact your life? According to Dr. Dean, it “can magnify stress and anxiety. Serotonin, the feel-good brain chemical that is boosted artificially by some medications, depends on magnesium for its production and function. Not all forms of magnesium are easily absorbed by the body. Magnesium citrate powder is a highly absorbable form that can be mixed with hot or cold water and sipped at work or at home throughout the day.” Get your daily dose by reaching for the following foods: • Almonds • Bananas • Tofu • Quinoa • Whole wheat bread • Broccoli • Edamame • Black beans • Peanut butter • Strawberries Try eating more of these foods in the darker, colder months to feed your mood and sleep for the better.

Wealth Building

Brought to you by:

Planning that affordable holiday trip for your family Are you an advance planner or an improviser? Your travel planning style might save you money during the busy winter holiday travel season.

Generally, families with children and a need for specific seating and direct flights may need to plan earlier to secure such reservations. More flexible travelers can roll the dice on last-minute deals. Here are some ideas to explore: Be open-minded about scheduling. Most people know red-eye and dawn flights are typically cheaper. However, holiday travel presents its own set of opportunities for pricing and availability if you don't follow the crowd. For example, with Thanksgiving always on a Thursday, most travelers choose Tuesday or Wednesday for arrival and Sunday for departure. Choosing a different scheduling window, including travel on the actual holiday, may not only save money but considerable stress getting to and from clogged airport, train and bus stations. Drive smart or leave the keys at home. If you're using your own vehicle, make sure your collision and liability coverage are adequate to cover potential medical and repair costs for other motorists if you're in an accident out of town. If you're planning to rent a vehicle, speak with your auto insurance agent before you go. Many personal policies do extend domestic collision and liability coverage to rentals, but it's particularly important to confirm coverage if you're traveling outside the United States. Of course, if you're visiting a place with excellent public transportation or safe bike routes, check pricing. An affordable bike rental (pack a helmet) or multi-day city

or regional bus-and-rail pass might eliminate the need for a car altogether. Sleep cheap. Saving money on accommodations is another area where you can save significantly by either planning ahead or trolling for last-minute bargains. Top family destinations generally require reservations months in advance, but see how full they are closest to the actual holiday dates. Many family members may travel a week before or a week after the actual holiday but won't stay over the holiday. That leaves more rooms and activities available. The same goes for stays in other popular tourist locations around the world. Check destination hotels closer to the date to see if they're offering special rates or packages. Put your membership dollars to work. If you belong to an auto club or have credit cards with particular travel benefits, see whether any of those benefits – from actual mileage points to cou-

pon discounts – can be used to save money. Check your home, health and business insurance. If you are traveling domestically or globally, see if your personal health insurance extends to your destination. The same goes for home/ rental and business insurance. Many people don't realize that some or all of their personal insurance coverage may cover medical, theft, liability, injury and other risks

at their destination. Read your policy and confirm your assumptions with your agent. Consider travel insurance to fill any gaps. Once you've confirmed the limits of your personal coverage, research travel insurance policy sites like http://insuremytrip.com and recent articles on travel insurance so you can make sure common risks like trip cancellation and lost luggage are covered as well as specialized risks like

advanced medical care and medical transportation at your destination. Watch those bags. Many airlines charge ascending fees for every checked bag, so packing light has never made more sense. However, major air and ground shipping companies are now offering luggage-shipping services for domestic and overseas travelers with pickup options at their ground facilities. Make a call and see if this option might work for you, particularly if you take extra clothes or gifts with you at the holidays. Bottom line: Holiday travel bargains can be found months in advance and sometimes at the last minute. Your flexibility will determine the deals you can get. This article is intended to provide general information and should not be considered health, legal, tax or financial advice. It's always a good idea to consult a tax or financial advisor for specific information on how certain laws apply to your situation and about your individual financial situation.

Fats Domino passes (Continued from pg. 2) music like colored people. Let’s face it: I can’t sing it like Fats Domino can. I know that.” Rotund and standing 5 feet 5 inches — he would joke that he was as wide as he was tall — Mr. Domino had a big, infectious grin, a fondness for ornate, jewel-encrusted rings and an easygoing manner in performance; even in plaintive songs his voice had a smile in it. And he was a master of the wordless vocal, making hits out of songs full of “woo-woos” and “la-las.” Working with the songwriter, producer and arranger David Bartholomew, Mr. Domino and his band carried New Orleans parade rhythms into rock ’n’ roll and put a local stamp on nearly everything they touched, even country tunes like Jambalaya or big-band songs like My Blue Heaven and When My Dreamboat Comes Home. Antoine Dominique Domino, Jr., was born on February 26, 1928, the youngest of eight children in a family with Creole roots. He grew up in the Ninth Ward of New Orleans, where he spent most of his life. Music filled his life from the age of 10, when his family inherited an old piano. After his brother-in-law Harrison Verrett, a traditional-jazz musician, wrote down the notes on the keys and taught him a few chords, Antoine threw himself at the instrument — so enthusiastically that his parents moved it to the garage.

He was almost entirely selftaught, picking up ideas from boogie-woogie masters like Meade Lux Lewis, Pinetop Smith and Amos Milburn. He attended the Louis B. Macarty School but dropped out in the fourth grade to work as an iceman’s helper. In his teens, he started working at a club called the Hideaway with a band led by the bassist Billy Diamond, who nicknamed him Fats. Mr. Domino soon became the band’s frontman and a local draw. In 1947 Mr. Domino married Rosemary Hall, and they had eight children: Antoine III, Anatole, Andre, Antonio, Antoinette, Andrea, Anola and Adonica. His wife died in 2008. A complete list of survivors was not immediately available. In 1949, Mr. Bartholomew brought Lew Chudd, the owner of Imperial Records in Los Angeles, to the Hideaway. Mr. Chudd signed Mr. Domino on the spot, with a contract, unusual for the time, that paid royalties rather than a one-time purchase

of songs. Immediately, Mr. Domino and Mr. Bartholomew wrote The Fat Man, a cleaned-up version of a song about drug addiction called Junkers Blues, and recorded it with Mr. Bartholomew’s studio band. By 1951 it had sold a million copies. In 1952, on a chance visit to Cosimo Matassa’s recording studio in New Orleans, Mr. Domino was asked to help out on a recording by a nervous teenager named Lloyd Price. Sitting in with Mr. Bartholomew’s band, he came up with the memorable piano part for Lawdy Miss Clawdy, one of the first rhythm-and-blues records to cross over to a pop audience Through the early 1950s Mr. Domino turned out a stream of hits, taking up what seemed like permanent residence in the upper reaches of the R&B charts. His records began reaching the pop charts as well. In that racially segregated era, white performers used his hits to build their careers. In 1955, Ain’t It a Shame be-

came a No. 1 hit for Pat Boone as Ain’t That a Shame, while Domino’s arrangement of a traditional song, Bo Weevil, was imitated by Teresa Brewer. Mr. Domino’s appeal to white teenagers broadened as he embarked on national tours and appeared with mixed-race rock ’n’ roll revues like the Moondog Jubilee of Stars Under the Stars, presented by the disc jockey Alan Freed at Ebbets Field in Brooklyn. Appearances on national television, on Steve Allen and Ed Sullivan’s shows, put him in millions of living rooms. He did not flaunt his status as an innovator, or as an architect of a powerful cultural movement. At a news conference in Las Vegas in 1969, after resuming his performing career, Elvis Presley interrupted a reporter who had called him “the king.” He pointed to Mr. Domino, who was in the room, and said, “There’s the real king of rock ’n’ roll.” Mr. Domino had his biggest hit in 1956 with his version of Blueberry Hill” a song that had been recorded by Glenn Miller’s big band in 1940. It peaked at No. 2 on the pop charts and sold a reported three million copies. Mr. Domino performed in 1950s movies like Shake, Rattle and Rock, The Big Beat (for which he and Mr. Bartholomew wrote the title song) and The Girl Can’t Help It. In 1957, he toured for three months with Chuck Berry, Clyde McPhatter, the Moonglows and others. He toured Europe for the first time in 1962 and met the Beatles in Liverpool, before they were famous. His contract with Imperial ended in 1963, and he went on to record for ABC-Paramount, Mercury, Broadmoor, Reprise and other labels. Although he was no longer a pop sensation, Mr. Domino continued to perform worldwide and appeared for 10 months a year in Las Vegas in the mid-1960s. On tour, he would bring his own pots

and pans so he could cook. His life on the road ended in the early 1980s, when he decided that he did not want to leave New Orleans, saying it was the only place where he liked the food. He went on to perform regularly at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, and in 1987 Jerry Lee Lewis and Ray Charles joined him for a Cinemax special, Fats Domino and Friends. He released a holiday album, Christmas Is a Special Day, in 1993. Reclusive and notoriously resistant to interview requests, Mr. Domino stayed home even when he received a lifetime achievement Grammy Award in 1987. (He did travel to New York when he was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1986 as one of its first members, although he did not take part in the jam session that concluded the ceremony.) In 1999, when he was awarded the National Medal of Arts, he sent his daughter Antoinette to the White House to pick up the prize. He even refused to leave New Orleans when Hurricane Katrina devastated the city on Aug. 29, 2005, remaining at his flooded home — he was living in the Lower Ninth Ward then — until he was rescued by helicopter on Sept. 1. President George W. Bush visited Mr. Domino’s home in 2006 in recognition of New Orleans’s cultural resilience; that same year, Mr. Domino released Alive and Kickin,' his first album in more than a decade. The title song began, “All over the country, people want to know / Whatever happened to Fats Domino,” then continued, “I’m alive and kicking and I’m where I wanna be.” He was often seen around New Orleans, emerging from his pink-roofed mansion driving a pink Cadillac. “I just drink my little beers, do some cookin’, anything I feel like,” he told The Daily Telegraph of London in 2007, describing his retirement.

Robert Guillaume passes (Continued from pg. 2) The career of Robert Guillaume almost ended in January 1999 at Walt Disney Studio. He was appearing in the TV series Sports Night as Isaac Jaffee, executive producer of a sports highlight show. Returning to his dressing room after a meal away from the studio, he suddenly collapsed. "I fell on the floor, and I couldn't get up," he told an interviewer in 2001. "I kept floundering about on the floor and I didn't know why I couldn't do it. I didn't know it was caused by my left side being weaker than the other." Fortunately, St. Joseph Hospital was directly across from the studio. The 71-yearold actor was taken there and treated for a stroke— the result of a blood clot that blocked circulation of blood to the brain. They are fatal in 15 percent of the cases. Guillaume's stroke was minor, causing relatively slight damage and little effect on his speech. After six weeks in the hospital, he underwent a therapy of walks and sessions in the gym. Because of slim ratings, the second season proved to be the last for

In Guillaume: A Life, his 2002 autobiography he laid bare his troubled life. He was born fatherless on Nov. 30, 1927, in St. Louis, one of four children. His mother named him Robert Peter Williams; when he became a performer he adopted Guillaume, a French version of Williams, believing the change would give him distinction. His early years were spent in a back-alley apartment without plumbing or electricity; an outhouse was shared with two dozen people. His alcoholic mother hated him because of his dark skin, and his grandmother rescued him, taught him to read and enrolled him in a Catholic school. Seeking but denied his mother's love and scorned by nuns and students because of his dark skin, the boy became a rebel, and that carried into his adult life. He was expelled from school and then the Army, though he was granted an honorable discharge. He fathered a daughter and abandoned the child and her mother. He did the same to his first wife and two sons and to another woman and a daughter. He worked in a department store, the post office and as St. Louis's first black

"To assuage bitterness requires more than human effort," he wrote at the end of his autobiography.
