Wisconsin goes purple, voters weigh in on split state Republicans and Democrats both won and lost major races in the 2022 election

Republicans and Demo crats both won and lost ma jor Wisconsin races in the 2022 elections.

Outlets project Democrat Governor Tony Evers to keep his spot over Republican Tim Michels, while Demo crat U.S. Senate candidate Mandela Barnes fell short to Republican Senator Ron Johnson.

It solidified Wisconsin's color – purple.

"The state is really purple, it’s one of the things I really like about the state," Wauwa tosa voter Jayme Birken told WISN 12 News. "But I do regret it’s not as mixed as we

used to be. There was a lot on the line.”

And there were a lot of people in it. Wauwatosa vot ers waited in hours-long lines to vote Tuesday. The Wauwa tosa Clerk told 12 News they had a near 80 percent voter turnout.

“By the time I stepped out and finished voting the line was like out the door, wrap ping around the building," voter Alyssa Sanchez-Mor ris said. “It shows me that a lot of people wanted to vote and make sure their concerns were being heard.”

Overall, it appeared most voters weren't entirely happy, or completely upset by the results.

Mayor Johnson hosts '2022 Fatherhood Summit'

Fathers, Grandfathers, Fu ture Fathers and Father Fig ures will join Mayor Cavalier Johnson on Saturday, No vember 12, 2022 for the an nual Milwaukee Fatherhood Summit.

This year’s event takes place at Destiny Youth Plaza, 7220 North 76th Street from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.

The Fatherhood Summit is a one-stop shop resource fair

“Well, that’s the whole country everywhere, very split," said Wauwatosa voter Natalie Werstein. "I’m really pleased that Tony Evers won; I am keeping my fingers crossed on Mandela Barnes.”

It was a close race, but outlets called Johnson as the winner over Barnes around 10:30 a.m.

“I was very down. I was expecting it to be a lot dif ferent. I was expecting a red wave, and it was kind of a trickle," said voter Christine Zuleger. “Ron Johnson is go ing to go back to the Senate and I’m happy about that. So, you know you persevere!”

Limitations are limiting

People are born with limit less potential. Everyone has the potential to live and do whatever they choose. Par ents and family shape a child’s mind and often unwittingly place limitations inside the child’s mind. The goal in life is to live to the fullest. Yet, many people have already been cut out of the game be cause of limitations placed in their minds.

“The mind is a terrible thing to waste.” This was the slogan of the United Negro College Fund for decades. The slogan referred to Af rican Americans not being able to attend college because of financial restrictions. This saying can have deeper im plications for all people. Are people using the full poten tial of their minds in U.S. so ciety or any society? A mind can have a college education and still be wasted. One of the biggest obstacles to per fecting a mind and a person’s potential is mental limita tions that have been accepted as normal.

A person in 2022 is faced with all sorts of expectations

from others and themselves. The problem is that people have limits that have been set in their minds by parents, friends and society. For in stance, people are told that they are too old to do certain things or pursue certain ca reers. Is there a such thing as being too old to do anything in the USA? You have el derly people still working or participating in sports. If an elderly person can do phys ical things why can’t a mid dle-aged person change pro fessions or join the military? Limits set by society, and, more importantly, placed in a person’s head, hinder these aspirations.

What if there were no hindering thoughts to stop people from achieving their goals? What if people did not think that they could not perform certain tasks be cause they were not born on the right side of the tracks? When a child is growing up many directives given by parents are what they can not do. Why not focus on what children can do? These limits come on every level down to simple things. For instance, for years many Afri can Americans thought play ing quarterback in football was a white person’s position. Why? Limits were placed in many adolescent African American minds.

These minor limitations placed in children's heads often grow into major ones that shape a person’s life. This societal problem with limitations is not a color is sue. Of course many limita tions do apply to color in the USA. Those limitations are not a part of this discussion. Let’s talk about the limita tions that tell a person that they may fail in life if they do not conform to society's norm. I do not mean doing illegal activities. I mean the limits placed on the creativ ity of an individual; the fear limits that make a person doubt themselves because no one around them can under stand their vision. You see this daily in education. A

student who does not fit into the cookie-cutter education system is often shunned, and possibly failed.

The average person in the USA has so many limitations inside their heads until they do not even notice them. These limits lead to fears that keep people from reaching their true potential. U.S. citizens have to start reach ing their full potential if the USA is going to keep pace with other world powers. That will not happen with the current set of limitations in the heads of the majority of U.S. citizens.

MPS students can earn LPN in high school

With health care workers in high demand, Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) stu dents are getting on track to ward excellent careers while still in high school. Through a partner pathway, students can earn credentials as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) on their way to be coming a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) while still in high school.

This exciting option is of fered at Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC) through the M-Cubed part nership. M-Cubed is a com bined effort of MPS, MATC, and the University of Wis consin–Milwaukee (UWM) that prepares students for college, helps provide a smooth transition from high school to college, and sup ports students throughout the application process and

into their first year at MATC or UWM.

Through the M-Cubed College Connections pro gram, students can take coursework at MATC while still in high school, with the goal of earning LPN certifi cation. The program is avail able to students in any MPS

high school. Students should apply in January of their sophomore year to begin the nursing pathway in summer and throughout their junior and senior years. Applicants must be on track to graduate, eligible for early release in their junior year, and should have a 2.75 GPA or higher and good grades (A or B) in

science courses such as biolo gy and chemistry. During the application process, students will respond to questions about their goals and desire to be in the program.

Since the first year of the College Connections Nurs ing Pathway during the 2019–20 school year, two students have earned the full LPN with an additional 50 students completing the CNA at MATC as part of the program. Only 32 students are accepted into the pro gram each school year.

Coursework is challenging and requires a commitment by students who take part. Those who successfully com plete the program earn both their CNA and LPN and are eligible for full-time work with patients in hospitals, nursing homes, and assist

ed living facilities. The work completed by students earns high school credit as well as college credit, saving signifi cant time and money when participants enter college.

The partnership between MPS and MATC has yield ed multiple improvements to the program in adapting to part-time coursework by high school students. MATC has adjusted the sequenc ing and expanded supports for participants to meet the needs of students while ful filling all requirements for licensure.

Sophomores who are in terested in the LPN program should contact their school counselor and watch for ap plication announcements in January.

MPS celebrates School Psychology Week November 7–11, 2022

This week, we appreciate our school psychologists who have the skills to assist stu dents and staff in growing and working together while

shifting gears to meet the demands of school and life. School psychologists also help facilitate positive change by improving school culture,

identifying systems-level change, and advocating for school and individual needs. Thank you, school psychol ogy team!

Every day, school psychol ogists are supporting chil dren in Milwaukee Publci Schools (MPS) locations in grades K3 through 12 as they find their way in school, overcome challenges, and navigate life. Help celebrate National School Psychology Week from November 7 to 11. Promoted by the Nation al Association of School Psy chologists since 2002, this annual observance celebrates the work of school psychol ogists in supporting student wellness, achievement, and personal growth.

MPS currently employs about 163 school psychol ogists, all of whom have a master’s degree or doctoral degree and are certified in school psychology. School psychologists play a part in many aspects of education as special education evalua tion team members, violence prevention specialists, build ing-based psychologists, cri sis team members, ropes and challenge supervisors, suicide prevention trainers, multitiered intervention special ists, and anti-racism edu cators. This team supports individual students, groups

of students, staff, and families in evaluating and responding to current needs. They also engage proactively with stu dents to promote confidence, reduce risk-taking, and help children and teens navigate daily challenges.

The school psychology team was instrumental in helping students and fami lies adapt to school closures during the pandemic, and the team still actively ad dresses the changing needs of students who may be recov ering from instability. School psychologists were an inte gral part in helping students and staff cope with virtual learning, social distancing, and school closures.

The theme of this year’s National School Psychol ogy Week is “Together We Shine,” designed to promote hope after challenging years that included the pandem ic, social injustice and ineq uity, economic stress, and challenges to mental and physical health. By promot ing positivity and envision ing a brighter future, school psychologists are looking to build resilience and hope in students and families.

Is someone you know at risk for diabetic vision loss?

With diabetes at epidemic levels, you probably know (or are) one of the 37.3 mil lion Americans (11.3 percent of the population) with the disease. Whether or not the cause is due to lifestyle (poor diet, lack of exercise), genet ics or both, be aware: Dia betes does more than affect blood sugar levels. Without proper precautions, it can lead to nerve damage; limb amputation; heart and kid ney disease, and sight loss. Blindness is the complication diabetics fear the most. And, if you are black, you have up to a three times greater risk of losing vision to diabetes than a white person.

We encourage members of the black community to challenge the statistics by educating themselves about the importance of early de tection and treatment. To help our readers protect their vision, we asked the team at Eye Care Specialists, an oph thalmology practice that has served the vision care needs of more than 200,000 Wis consinites since 1985, to an swer the following questions. How does diabetes steal vi sion?

“With diabetes, fluctuat ing and high blood sugar levels can cause the blood vessels that nourish the reti na in the back of the eye to become weak or abnormal. This disease of the retina or ‘retinopathy’ leads to leakage and bleeding that can blur vision and permanently im pair sight.” said Brett Rhode, MD, Head of Ophthalmol ogy at Aurora Sinai Medi cal Center and senior part ner at Eye Care Specialists, which specializes in the care of diabetic patients. “With the increasing prevalence of diabetes, diabetic retinopa thy is now the leading cause of blindness among work ing-age Americans.”

Is retinopathy the only vi sion risk?

“In addition to causing ret inal damage, diabetes great ly increases the risk of other eye concerns. It doubles the likelihood of developing cataracts, a clouding of the lens inside the eye that blurs vision and requires surgical removal and implantation with a lens implant to repair. Diabetics are also twice as likely to develop glaucoma, a condition in which increased fluid pressure in the eye caus es damage to the optic nerve that leads to permanent loss of side (and eventually all) vision,” said Rhode.

What are the symptoms?

“Usually, there are no early

symptoms, and most people don't notice a problem with their vision until retinopathy is so far advanced that lost sight may not be able to be restored. That’s why annual dilated eye exams are crucial. Also, call your doctor imme diately if you notice vision changes in one or both eyes (not associated with blood sugar fluctuations), numer ous floating spots (like spi der webs), or a veil over your vision,” said David Scheidt, OD, a medical optometrist and consultant for the Wis consin Diabetes Advisory Group’s original guidelines. How is diabetic eye disease diagnosed?

“Diabetes-related changes in vision can sometimes tem porarily affect vision or occur so gradually that people don’t notice or take action. But, even if a person’s vision ap pears to be good, serious sig nificant damage may be pres ent and progressing. That’s why diabetic eye disease can only be diagnosed through a comprehensive eye exam ination that includes pupil dilation (enlargement with drops) to best see inside to check the back of the eye for early signs of retinopathy,” explained ophthalmologist Michael Raciti, MD, a local leader in the fight against di abetic eye disease. Raciti add ed, “Diabetes-related sight loss is often preventable with blood sugar control, yearly exams, and early interven tion. But all of our expertise, equipment and treatments are of no use if patients don’t come in for regular eye check-ups.”

Are you at risk?

“Diabetic eye disease can appear as early as a year after the onset of diabetes, and up to 45 percent of people with diabetes have some degree of retinopathy (retina damage),” said Daniel Ferguson, MD, a partner at Eye Care Special ists, where tens of thousands of diabetic patients receive comprehensive care. “All di abetics—Type 1, Type 2, in sulin-dependent or not—are

at risk, which increases with the number of years you have diabetes. And, because blacks have up to triple the risk of developing diabetes than whites, the threat of vision loss is correspondingly high er. That’s why we can’t stress enough the sight-saving ben efits of annual eye exams.” What treatment is avail able?

“When treatment is nec essary, we have been very pleased with the success of medications (such as Avastin, Eylea, Lucentis and Abysmo) that can be painlessly injected into the eye to decrease blood vessel leakage and inhibit ab normal new growth—thus staving off progression of diabetic eye disease. We eval

uate each patient’s response individually to determine if and when (about every 4-12 weeks) they should receive injections. As a result, we have seen amazing results, including not only stabiliza tion of vision, but in some cases, improvement in sight,” reported Daniel Paskowitz, MD, PhD, an ophthalmol ogist with credentials from Harvard and Johns Hopkins who performs injection pro cedures on a daily basis.

Should you be screened for diabetic eye disease?

Do you have diabetes? Was your last eye exam more than a year ago? If you can answer “Yes” to those two questions, then it’s time to have your vi sion checked. Keep in mind that appointments are often covered by insurance, Medi care or Medicaid. If these options are not applicable, arrangements can usually be made to accept cash, check, credit card or financing plan payment. “Don’t hesitate. It’s an opportunity to ensure that you see life to the full est—now and in the future. And, remember, EVERY ONE should have their eyes checked every two years after age 40 for other conditions, like glaucoma, that may be causing permanent vision

loss without you even notic ing it,” advised Scheidt.

Diabetes can cause abnormal retinal blood vessel growth, leakage and bleeding that leads to blurring, dark spots, and loss of vision.

Diabetes and cognitive decline: What it is and what to do about it

Take a moment to look around the next time you’re at a mall, grocery store, sport ing event, or park. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 11.3 percent or more of the people you visit have been di agnosed with type 2 diabetes. The CDC also notes that a startling 1 in almost 4 Amer ican adults (38.0 percent) fulfill the criteria for predia betes.

Therefore, this is not a unique problem, and the consequences of persistently high blood sugar—as seen in people with prediabetes and type 2 diabetes—go far beyond increased hunger, thirst, and frequency of uri nation. By the way, all of these are signs of hypergly cemia, which is high blood sugar.

You may experience prob lems with focus, memory, and general brain health. However, diabetes the down stream effects of on cognition are not always unavoidable. It is possible to take steps to mind your own business even if you have type 2 diabetes or may be at risk for developing it.

Your comprehensive guide on the relationship between the brain and blood sugar, as well as advice on how to eat, move, and change your life style, is provided below.

Diabetic patients are more likely to experience cogni tive impairment

The precise cause(s) of this may still be unknown;

however, it may be related to both dia betes itself and other chronic illnesses like high blood pressure or aging.

Additionally, those who have diabetes are more likely to develop chronic ill nesses. If diabetes is poorly managed or not controlled by medicine, diet, and exercise, it may also affect the eyes, heart, kidneys, brain, and other organs.

The same factor that puts diabetics at risk for limb problems also appears to be the link between diabetes and dementia.

The primary energy source for the brain is sugar. How ever, having high blood sugar levels, like in the case of dia betes, can stress the brain and harm it.

Diabetes can harm the nerves and blood arteries in the brain, just as it can harm the nerves in the heart, eyes, and extremities.

Think about how the brain receives oxygen-rich blood from blood arteries. If these blood arteries are damaged, it may impact the amount of blood that gets to the brain and, over time, cause cogni tive impairment. Additional ly, the brain’s functioning de pends heavily on insulin, and brain insulin resistance can impair our cognitive abilities.

As a result of this damage, the likelihood of developing more severe neurodegenera tive conditions like demen tia, Alzheimer’s disease, and vascular dementia rise. Mem ory and cognitive ability may also deteriorate.

The CDC confirms that reduced blood flow to the brain can result in nerve damage that causes memory and learning issues, mood changes, and, in the long run, conditions like Alzheimer’s disease. This is similar to how insufficient blood flow to one’s toes can necessitate an amputation, for example. The CDC warns that either too high or too low blood sugar levels might cause this, so we should all aim for the happy medium.

What you can do to safe guard your brain

It’s not too late to change your lifestyle and make better decisions to keep your men tal acuity, even if you have a family history of type 2 dia betes or have already been di

agnosed with the disease.

Early adoption of healthy habits can help safeguard your brain against cognitive deterioration.

Visit your health care pro vider frequently

Many people who have prediabetes or even diabe tes are completely unaware of it. More frequently than you might imagine, people have raised blood sugar levels without being aware of it.

According to the American Diabetes Association, more than 8 million Americans meet the criteria but remain undiagnosed. If you don’t see your doctor frequently, it might be difficult to get a diagnosis or even recognize that something might be “wrong.”

Check your blood sugar levels frequently

If you have type 2 diabetes, it’s important to closely ad here to your doctor’s recom

mended treatment sched ule and keep track of your blood sugar levels outside of sessions.

Cognitive impairment is linked to poor blood sugar management.

Monitoring your blood sugar levels and maintain ing them as close to your target range as you can is thus one of the best strate gies to preserve your brain if you have diabetes. This is essential for controlling diabetes and avoiding problems such as cogni tive deterioration.

Protein and fiber should be included in each meal and snack

According to Ehsani, con suming carbohydrates along side foods high in protein and fiber can assist in main taining blood sugar equilib rium.

Scoop up a bowl of wholewheat noodles with chicken and marinara sauce rather than plain white spaghetti with Alfredo. Alternatively, when you visit the vending machine at 3 p.m., select the bag of almonds rather than the package of sour gummies.

The conclusion

Although it has been demonstrated that having type 2 diabetes or prediabe tes increases the risk of cog nitive impairment later in life, some healthy habits can work as a “helmet” to shield your mind and its faculties.

OURHISTORY AN EXPLORATION OF OUR LIVES AND LEGACIES

Spare a special moment for black veterans

A recurring theme of mov ies made during World War II is servicemen risking their lives for their platoon bud dies, invariably a New Yorker (sometimes Jewish), a South erner, a Midwesterner, a Cal ifornian, someone of East ern European background, an Italian American and an Irish American. In the mov ie’s standard setup, we learn their motivation: a brother/ friend lost at Pearl Harbor or a former European home land overrun by Nazis.

Those 1940s movies never depict African Americans, who had to shoulder their civic responsibilities while denied citizenship rights. They faced the conundrum of fighting to liberate Eu rope and Asia while serv ing in a segregated military for a country that permitted lynchings, segregation and disenfranchisement. Consid ering what African Ameri cans endured, what was their motivation? In one word: pa triotism.

Since the Revolutionary War, African Americans have always shown their loyalty to their country. They risked their lives and went above and beyond the call of duty as they earned Congressional Medals of Honor: 25 in the Civil War; 18 in the Indian Wars; and 6 in the Spanish American War. Racism pre vented the timely awarding of America’s highest military

honor for valor to any Afri can American for actions in the two world wars. Only in the last 30 years were two soldiers from the First World War and seven from the Sec ond belatedly awarded the Medal of Honor.

After African Americans proved their mettle while fighting under French com manders during World War I, they returned to a country where the Ku Klux Klan was experiencing a countrywide resurgence. Indiana, Ohio, Il linois and Michigan vied for the dubious distinction of having the most members in that 3.5 million-member hate group.

When the 1940 draft be gan, racism and discrimina tion were endemic in the mil itary. African Americans had to literally fight for the right to fight for their country. They were placed into segre gated units and watched Ger man and Italian POWs being treated better than they were. Nevertheless, when given the opportunity to prove them selves in battle, they did ex actly that.

There were many African American World War II he roes besides the Tuskegee Airmen, who tend to be re membered the best. Black soldiers participated in the iconic Normandy Invasion and the Battle of the Bulge.

African American Montford Point Marines showed their bravery on Saipan, Iwo Jima and Okinawa. The most ly black Red Ball Express drivers insured the success of Patton’s Third Army by supplying it with the essen tial food, fuel and ammuni tion needed to rapidly drive across France.

When considering that in the war’s final year more than 300 soldiers died daily, the herculean efforts of those drivers shortened the war somewhat and undoubted ly saved countless lives and spared many more from inju ry. The Third Army’s African American 761st Tank Battal ion never took a day off in six months of fighting across France, Belgium, Holland, Luxembourg, Germany and Austria.

After enormous infantry losses during the Battle of the Bulge, Gen. Dwight Ei senhower permitted African American servicemen to volunteer for combat duty. About 4,500 volunteered, but only 2,500 were accepted for that experiment. Two of World War II’s largest con struction projects, the Alas ka Highway and the Ledo Road, were largely built by African American engineers under extremely difficult conditions. The paratroopers of the Triple Nickles extin guished West Coast forest fires started by Japanese bal

loon bombs.

The black women of the 6888th Postal Battalion worked around the clock to ensure that the morale of sol diers in Europe was kept high by getting them timely mail. After the racist Navy Secre tary died in 1944, the Navy finally accepted a handful of African American women: 70 of the 84,000 WAVES; five of the Coast Guard’s 11,000 SPARS; and four of the Navy’s 11,000 nurses were black. None served in the Marine Corps Women’s Reserve, which barred them until 1949. The Army limited the number of black nurses until FDR proposed draft ing them, and even then they could only treat black sol diers and POWs.

After liberating Europe and Asia from oppression, black veterans espoused Dr. W.E.B. Du Bois' 1919 man tra: “We return. We return from the fighting. We return fighting.”

African American veterans, rarely seen in World War II movies except in secondary roles, if at all, expressed their motivation for serving after the war by trying to regis ter to vote, trying to collect on a promissory note which guaranteed them “inalienable rights" to "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”
