North Central Service Club hosts 2019 Annual Luncheon and Fashion Show

On Sunday, November 11, 2018, the North Central Service Club presented their Annual Luncheon and Fashion Show at the Radisson Hotel Milwaukee West, 2303 North Mayfair Rd. The luncheon featured a silent auction and a fashion show, which showcased fashions provided by Gg Collections Boutique, 5201 West North Ave. The show was MC'ed by Gloria Miller (top right photo, right). The North Central Service Club was founded by Marlene Narcisse Johnson and Mildred Harpole, who recog-
nized the need for African American women to become involved in community service within the central city; and to provide a reservoir of leadership to effect positive change. The organization aims to develop civic, educational, social, and cultural programs which can improve the quality of life for central city women. Mildred Harpole is the founding president and Pamela Malone (left photo) serves as president.
Milwaukee Urban League announces participation in the Milwaukee Community Schools Partnership On Monday, November 5, 2018, the Milwaukee Urban League (MUL) made an announcement at North Division High School, 1011 West Center St., that it would be officially participating in the Milwaukee Community Schools Partnership (MCSP). MUL will collaborate with North Division High School and the United Way of Greater Milwaukee & Waukesha County in the MCSP program, bringing students, families, and community voices together to determine the needs of the schools, identifying relevant resources, and collectively create solutions. North Division High School is the cornerstone of the Lindsay Heights neighborhood, and has a rich history dating back to 1906. Wisconsin school investigated after students perform Nazi salute for junior prom photo

A school in Wisconsin is being investigated after a photo emerged showing dozens of students apparently performing Nazi salutes. The image surfaced on Twitter after it was shared by an account named “Welcome to Baraboo”. The post – now deleted – was captioned: “We even got the black kid to throw it up." It shows more than 50 young men in suits smiling and laughing on the steps of the county courthouse in Baraboo, a town of around 10,000 people. Most of them are lifting their right arms above their head, apparently to mimic the 'Sieg Heil' greeting popularized in Hitler's Germany. Lori Mueller, the school district superintendent in Baraboo, told The Independent she was investigating the image.

“The photo of students posted to #BarabooProud is not reflective of the educational values and beliefs of the School District of Baraboo,” she said. “We are investigating and will pursue any and all available and appropriate actions, including legal, to address.” Ms. Mueller confirmed there was only one secondary school in the district – Baraboo High School. In a letter to parents on Monday, November 12, 2018 Ms. Mueller said the photo was taken "last spring" and features Baraboo students "who appear to be making extremely inappropriate gestures." "The Baraboo School District is a hate-free environment where all people, regardless of race, color, religion, creed, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin or ancestry, are
welcome," it read. A former student who graduated earlier this year told The Independent the image was taken in May and features mostly boys who were in 11th grade at the time, which would mean they were then aged 16 and 17. "This is definitely not the first time this sort of problematic, hurtful behavior was given no punishment," she said. In a statement on Facebook, the Baraboo police department said it was "aware of a controversial photo of a group of high school students that has been posted to social media" and was also investigating. "Officers are assisting the Baraboo School District with their investigation into this matter," it added. Baraboo High School could not be reached for comment.

#Season of giving (Week 3) The Salvation Army includes social justice as part of its ministry work. God’s people have also recognized their responsibility toward social ministry. We are to care for others because Jesus directed us to do so. Some of the ways we can engage in the works of social justice is by feeding the hungry, clothing those who need clothes and caring for those who are oppressed. Jesus wrote in Matthew 25:35-40: “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me …Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me." As part of its social justice ministry each year, the Salva-
tion Army sponsor its Coats for Kids drive. According to the Salvation Army, 1 in 4 Milwaukee children are living in poverty. During the winter months, many children arrive at school without a warm coat. What You Can Donate 1. Each child’s coat is estimated at $30.00. The Salvation Army accepts monetary donations or in-kind donations of the following items: • Slightly used coats, both children and adult sizes. • New hats, mittens and scarves can be given along with your coat donations.

The story of how Rev. Dr. Archie Ivy and First Lady Jeanette Ivy were joined together began in the small town of Shannon, Mississippi. Archie Ivy and Jeanette Rogers were both students at Shannon High School. Archie is the oldest son of ten children while Jeanette is the youngest of five children, both grew up in the time of segregation and the Jim Crow South. Both Archie and Jeanette would graduate from Shannon High School and attend college; Archie attended Jackson State University, while Jeannette attended Alcorn State University.

have two children – Taylor, who is 13, and Caleb, who is 11. Jeannece Ivy works for Milwaukee Public Schools as a teacher and is a head track and field coach for James Madison Academic Campus High School, as well as an assistant coach for The Milwaukee Striders Track Club; and Andrea Ivy works for Milwaukee County and is an aspiring actor.

Although they knew each other in Mississippi, they did not start dating each other until they moved to Milwaukee. After dating for a year and a half, Archie and Jeanette got married and worked together to ensure what God has put together couldn’t be broken. Jeanette worked as a customer service representative for Blue Cross Blue Shield for 31 years. Archie worked for Milwaukee Public Schools for 30 years, first serving as a

MPS shows modest improvement on state report card Dozens of Milwaukee Public Schools showed signs of improvement on the 2017-18 state report cards released Tuesday, November 13, 2018, by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. Thirty-four MPS schools improved their category rating compared to the 2016-17 report cards. Nine additional schools were ranked in the significantly exceeds expectations, exceeds expectations, or meets expectations categories. Nearly half of all MPS schools - 79- have higher scores than last year but did not necessarily improve by a category. The district's overall score climbed slightly from 56 to 57.0.

The Weatherization Assistance program is a federally funded program that assists low-income families. Through weatherization improvements and upgrades, these households save on average $283 or more every year, according to a national evaluation of the program. Low-income households typically spend 16.3 percent of their total annual income versus 3.5 percent for other households (2014 ORNL study). Often, they must cut back on healthcare, medicine, groceries, and childcare to pay their energy bills. Weatherization helps alleviate this heavy energy burden through cost-effective build-
ing shell improvements such as insulation and air sealing, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, lighting, and appliances. The program improves health and safety by eliminating any energy-related hazards. ‘Black Girl Magic’ campaign helps 17 African American women win Houston court elections
Success means black women will serve on misdemeanor criminal courts and as family court judges in Houston for first time The Houston area's courts are going to be a lot more diverse thanks to a group of 17 African American women. The women, who were part of an effort dubbed the "Black Girl Magic" campaign, all won races on Tuesday, November 6, 2018, to be judges in various Harris County courts in an election that featured more black women on the county's ballot than any other. The "Black Girl Magic" campaign debuted over the summer with a viral photo that featured the 17 women and two other sitting Harris County judges inside a courtroom. Although those two judges lost their bids for seats on the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals, they will retain their local judgeships. Those behind the campaign say it was part of an effort to broaden the diversity of the Houston area's judiciary and ensure more African Americans and other minorities can bring their backgrounds and life experiences to the bench and better reflect the diversity of the nation's fourth largest city.

Angela Graves-Harrington, a family law attorney in Houston who was one of the 17 women elected, said Tuesday's success will be an important step in improving diversity, as this will be the first time black women have been elected as family court judges and as judges on misdemeanour criminal courts in Harris County. "We felt showcasing the number of African American women on the bench would galvanise our base and also galvanise those who don't typically vote in the midterm elections and get them excited about coming out," Ms. Graves-Harrington said. "We also wanted to have something out there that we could be proud of, that our community could be proud of and that Harris County could be proud of." Ms. Schechter said she hopes the successful election of the 17 African American women inspires "candidates of all colors" to run for local offices.
