Wisconsin school investigated after students perform Nazi salute for junior prom photo

A school in Wisconsin is being investigated after a photo emerged showing dozens of students apparently performing Nazi salutes. The image surfaced on Twitter after it was shared by an account named “Welcome to Baraboo”. The post – now deleted – was captioned: “We even got the black kid to throw it up." It shows more than 50 young men in suits smiling and laughing on the steps of the county courthouse in Baraboo, a town of around 10,000 people. Most of them are lifting their right arms above their head, apparently to mimic the 'Sieg Heil' greeting popularized in Hitler's Germany. Lori Mueller, the school district superintendent in Baraboo, told The Independent she was investigating the image.

“The photo of students posted to #BarabooProud is not reflective of the educational values and beliefs of the School District of Baraboo,” she said. “We are investigating and will pursue any and all available and appropriate actions, including legal, to address.” Ms. Mueller confirmed there was only one secondary school in the district – Baraboo High School. In a letter to parents on Monday, November 12, 2018 Ms. Mueller said the photo was taken "last spring" and features Baraboo students "who appear to be making extremely inappropriate gestures." "The Baraboo School District is a hate-free environment where all people, regardless of race, color, religion, creed, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin or ancestry, are

welcome," it read. A former student who graduated earlier this year told The Independent the image was taken in May and features mostly boys who were in 11th grade at the time, which would mean they were then aged 16 and 17. "This is definitely not the first time this sort of problematic, hurtful behavior was given no punishment," she said. In a statement on Facebook, the Baraboo police department said it was "aware of a controversial photo of a group of high school students that has been posted to social media" and was also investigating. "Officers are assisting the Baraboo School District with their investigation into this matter," it added. Baraboo High School could not be reached for comment.

The Counseling Corner

By Rev. Judith T. Lester, B.Min. M.Th

#Season of giving (Week 3) The Salvation Army includes social justice as part of its ministry work. God’s people have also recognized their responsibility toward social ministry. We are to care for others because Jesus directed us to do so. Some of the ways we can engage in the works of social justice is by feeding the hungry, clothing those who need clothes and caring for those who are oppressed. Jesus wrote in Matthew 25:35-40: “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me …Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me." As part of its social justice ministry each year, the Salva-

tion Army sponsor its Coats for Kids drive. According to the Salvation Army, 1 in 4 Milwaukee children are living in poverty. During the winter months, many children arrive at school without a warm coat. What You Can Donate 1. Each child’s coat is estimated at $30.00. The Salvation Army accepts monetary donations or in-kind donations of the following items: • Slightly used coats, both children and adult sizes. • New hats, mittens and scarves can be given along with your coat donations.

The story of how Rev. Dr. Archie Ivy and First Lady Jeanette Ivy were joined together began in the small town of Shannon, Mississippi. Archie Ivy and Jeanette Rogers were both students at Shannon High School. Archie is the oldest son of ten children while Jeanette is the youngest of five children, both grew up in the time of segregation and the Jim Crow South. Both Archie and Jeanette would graduate from Shannon High School and attend college; Archie attended Jackson State University, while Jeannette attended Alcorn State University.

MPS shows modest improvement on state report card Dozens of Milwaukee Public Schools showed signs of improvement on the 2017-18 state report cards released Tuesday, November 13, 2018, by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. Nine additional schools were ranked in the significantly exceeds expectations, exceeds expectations, or meets expectations categories. The district is implementing Five Priorities for Success, which will continue to help MPS improve student outcomes. The Five Priorities are: •Increasing academic achievement and accountability •Improving district and school culture

More Wisconsin districts and schools have absenteeism deductions for 2017-18 than in previous report cards.

Speak up, speak out! Nine ways to advocate for your needs at the doctor As she has shared, tennis legend Serena Williams faced life-threatening complications while giving birth to her baby girl Olympia last year. If it weren’t for Serena speaking up and pushing for doctors to listen to her, she may not have survived. Her story offers a perfect example of how important it is for us to be able to advocate for ourselves in healthcare settings. Serena is not alone in feeling she had to make a concerted effort to speak up. Patients of all backgrounds are finding themselves on the short end of the stick in our current state of health care. Doctors are often overworked, exhausted, short on time, and are prone to make mistakes. African Americans, in particular, find themselves feeling ignored and receiving a lesser quality of care. Research shows that when dealing with African American patients, non-African American providers prescribe treatment less often, are less empathetic, take reports of pain

Don't risk your family's health in a cold home, let SDC's weatherization assistance program help you Is your home cold in the winter? Do you put plastic on your windows to keep the heat inside? There’s a better way to survive Wisconsin’s winters. The Social Development Commission’s (SDC) weatherization team can help. If you qualify for Milwaukee County’s energy assistance program, you may qualify for SDC’s Weatherization services. SDC’s energy auditors can help you make your home more energy-efficient, whether you rent or own. Wondering if your furnace will make it through another winter? Have a SDC energy auditor check it out.

Milwaukee Times Weekly Newspaper

The Weatherization Assistance program is a federally funded program that assists low-income families. Through weatherization improvements and upgrades, these households save on average $283 or more every year, according to a national evaluation of the program. Low-income households typically spend 16.3 percent of their total annual income versus 3.5 percent for other households (2014 ORNL study). Often, they must cut back on healthcare, medicine, groceries, and childcare to pay their energy bills. Weatherization helps alleviate this heavy energy burden through cost-effective build-

ing shell improvements such as insulation and air sealing, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, lighting, and appliances. The program improves health and safety by eliminating any energy-related hazards. Once installed, energy-efficient weatherization measures continue to save money and energy year after year and increase household incomes so funds can go towards key living expenses. ** Information compiled by U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy

Fifteen easy and festive ideas for Thanksgiving decorations By William S. Gooden Every year millions of Americans face the same dilemma. You are having a house full of people for Thanksgiving weekend. And your home looks far from warm and inviting and you are far from an interior design whiz. Fear not; with a few simple ideas and a little creativity you can turn your home from drab and dreary into holiday chic in no time. 1.Outdoor string lights Soft, frosted bulbs help set the mood outdoors. Pro tip: Plant posts in the ground on either end of the table, then use 'em to attach string lights. 2. Pear centerpiece Stock up on seasonal produce at the grocery store for a chic (and cheap) table decoration. Cut out paper "leaves" and write down messages of gratitude — or use them as easy place cards.

3. Orange berry fall wreath While this beautiful personalized wreath from Elegant Wreath on etsy.com is impressive on your front door, it might break the bank at $81.00. You can achieve the same look with a less expensive wreath, wood letters, ribbon and white paint from a craft store. 4. Rockin' place cards Paint smooth stones with gold craft paint, then write guests' names with metallic marker to give a woodsy accent to your fall tables scapes.

5. Watercolor white pumpkin wall art Sweet Little Ones etsy.com $5.00 No time to wait for shipping? Print out this adorable piece of artwork at home and pop it in a frame you already have. You can even order it in other colors to create a little pumpkin patch on your gallery wall. 6. Cozy throws There's nothing better than crisp fall air. Move the table outside — just like the original Thanksgiving! — for a change of pace at this year's dinner. Warm it up with snuggly pillows, faux-fur throws, and a pretty accent rug. 7. Apple and wheat wreath Three Posts wayfair.com $52.99 Flowers, foliage, apples, pinecones, wheat: This wreath checks off all of your fall favorites in one go. 8. Pumpkin vine centerpiece If your table runner's looking a little bare, we've got you covered. Twist faux ivy and wire vines around gourds for decor that looks pretty from every place setting. 9. Acorn LED string lights Impress Life amazon.com $13.99 These teeny-tiny acorn lights would look so cute wrapped around a wreath or on top of the fireplace. Bonus: You can switch them on and off with a remote control, so you don't have to get up from your Thanksgiving food coma. 10. Grateful throw pillow pier1.com $14.99 Swap out your summery pillows for new seasonal set. And at just $15, you can buy two and not feel bad about it. 11. ‘Black Girl Magic’ campaign helps 17 African American women win Houston court elections

Success means black women will serve on misdemeanor criminal courts and as family court judges in Houston for first time The Houston area's courts are going to be a lot more diverse thanks to a group of 17 African American women. The women, who were part of an effort dubbed the "Black Girl Magic" campaign, all won races on Tuesday, November 6, 2018, to be judges in various Harris County courts in an election that featured more black women on the county's ballot than any other. The "Black Girl Magic" campaign debuted over the summer with a viral photo that featured the 17 women and two other sitting Harris County judges inside a courtroom. Although those two judges lost their bids for seats on the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals, they will retain their local judgeships. Those behind the campaign say it was part of an effort to broaden the diversity of the Houston area's judiciary and ensure more African Americans and other minorities can bring their backgrounds and life experiences to the bench and better reflect the diversity of the nation's fourth largest city.

cording to the Harris County Democratic Party.

"I think that while Houston itself is one of the most diverse cities in the United States, our elected officials have not always reflected that," said Lillie Schechter, chair of the Harris County Democratic Party, which put together the "Black Girl Magic" campaign. "Having a government that reflects the people, the population is something that is incredibly important." Lori Chambers Gray, a Houston defense attorney who won election to be a judge on a criminal district court, said the photo and the "Black Girls Magic" campaign provided her with a source of strength and motivation as she proceeded to election day. "I hope that it's an example for women that we do have opportunities to run

and to win a campaign," Ms Gray said. The "Black Girl Magic" moniker has been used as a hashtag in recent years to highlight the accomplishments of African American girls and women. In politics, it has been used to highlight the role African American women have played in helping decide various races, including the highly contested Senate race in Alabama last year in which Democrat Doug Jones beat Republican Roy Moore. The victory by the 17 black women was part of a Harris County rout by the Democrats, who won almost all of the nearly 70 local judicial races and ousted a popular Republican from the county's top elected office. versity of the Houston area's judiciary, more than three-quarters of US trial judges are white, according to a 2016 report by a liberal legal organization, the American Constitution Society. The group found less than one-third of state judges were women and less than one-fifth were people of color. In Texas, women of color make up about 28 per cent of the state's population but only about 12 per cent of its state court judges, according to the American Constitution Society's report. According to US Census figures, African-Americans make up about 20 per cent of Harris County's population. Tuesday's election will increase the number of black female judges in Harris County from eight to 25, ac-

Angela Graves-Harrington, a family law attorney in Houston who was one of the 17 women elected, said Tuesday's success will be an important step in improving diversity, as this will be the first time black women have been elected as family court judges and as judges on misdemeanour criminal courts in Harris County. "We felt showcasing the number of African American women on the bench would galvanise our base and also galvanise those who don't typically vote in the midterm elections and get them excited about coming out," Ms. Graves-Harrington said. "We also wanted to have something out there that we could be proud of, that our community could be proud of and that Harris County could be proud of." Ms. Schechter said she hopes the successful election of the 17 African American women inspires "candidates of all colors" to run for local offices.
