Gwen Ifill, political reporter and co-anchor of ‘PBS NewsHour,’ dies at 61 Gwen Ifill, a groundbreaking journalist who covered the White House, Congress and national campaigns during three decades for The Washington Post, The New York Times, NBC and, most prominently, PBS, died on Monday, November 14, 2016 at a hospice in Washington, D.C. She was 61. The cause was complications of uterine cancer, her brother Roberto said. In a distinguished career, Ms. Ifill was in the forefront of a journalism vanguard as a black woman in a field dominated by white men. She achieved her highest visibility most recently, as the moderator and managing editor of the public affairs program “Washington Week” on PBS and the co-anchor and co-managing editor, with Judy Woodruff, of “NewsHour,” competing with the major broadcast and cable networks for the nightly news viewership. They were the first all-female anchor team on network nightly news. Last spring, she and Ms. Woodruff were the moderators of a Democratic primary debate between former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Senator Bernie Sanders, reprising a role that Ms. Ifill had performed solo between sparring vice-presidential candidates in the 2004 and 2008 general election campaigns. She also wrote “The Breakthrough: Politics and Race in the Age of Obama,” a book published the day President Obama was inaugurated in 2009. Ms. Ifill had taken a month-

long leave from her PBS programs this year without disclosing her medical condition. She went on leave again a week ago, missing election-night coverage. The daughter of Caribbean immigrants, Ms. Ifill said she had known since she was 9, growing up in the tumultuous 1960s, that she wanted to be a journalist. “I was very conscious of the world being this very crazed place that demanded explanation,” she recalled in a 2011 interview with the Archive of American Television. “I didn’t see a whole lot of people who looked like me doing it on television,” she added, but “you get used to being underestimated.” “I got my first job by exceeding expectations,” she said. And she kept going: “This is the way it is. How do I get around it, get through it, surprise them?” Gwendolyn L. Ifill (she loathed her middle name and refused to reveal it) was born on Sept. 29, 1955, in Jamaica, Queens, to the former Eleanor Husband and Oliver Urcille Ifill, Sr., an A.M.E. minister. With her father being periodically reassigned, she grew up in several places — Queens, Staten Island, Manhattan, Buffalo, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts — living in church parsonages and sometimes in federally subsidized housing. “I knew who these people were because they were me,” she said of her public housing neighbors.

Gwen Ifill Charlayne Hunter-Gault, a former “NewsHour” correspondent and a pioneering African American journalist, said that she and Ms. Ifill, both daughters of ministers, were equipped with a moral armor “that served her and me well as we traversed roads not usually traversed by women who looked like us.” Ms. Ifill once said that being a preacher’s daughter also “means you always have to be good.” In addition to her brother Roberto, an economics professor, Ms. Ifill is survived by another brother, Earle, a minister; and a sister, Maria Ifill Philip, who is retired from the State Department. She graduated in 1977 with a bachelor of arts degree from Simmons College in Boston, where she majored in communications. After an internship at The Boston Herald-American, she wrote about food there be-

Pauline Redmond Coggs Foundation, Inc. hosts 43rd Annual Debutante Cotillion Twenty-seven young women awarded thousands in scholarship dollars The Pauline Redmond Coggs Foundation, Inc., announces it will host its 43rd Annual Debutante Cotillion on Sat., Nov. 26 at the Pfister Hotel. Twenty-seven young women who hail from Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) and other school districts will participate and be awarded scholarships by the foundation at its black tie event. This signature event of the Pauline Redmond Coggs Foundation will be emceed by FOX6 anchor Beverly Taylor and is expected to have an attendance in excess of 600 guests. The foundation has a rich history rooted in service with the focus on issues impacting women and girls. The young women, who are currently in the 12th grade, are selected as debutantes. They engage in community service impact projects through volunteerism, participate in workshops and trainings and fundraise as part of the debutante experience.

“We are so very proud of the impact we have been able to make on young women in the greater Milwaukee community through the Debutant Cotillion. Throughout the experience, each debutante participates in various community service, educational enrichment, and cultural awareness workshops and activities. The goal is for each debutante to emerge as a poised, self-confident and socially conscious young lady, ready to follow her dreams,” said Bridget Borum, president of the Pauline Redmond Coggs Foundation. Debutantes receive a scholarship award based on their fundraising efforts and successful completion of the program. To date almost

800 young women have participated and been awarded more than $200,000 in scholarships. The 2016 debutantes include: Zoe Taylor Ashley, Taylor Cheyenne Bell-Penix, Jade Ann Belton-Coleman, Mykayla Xynét Michelle Black, Rayna McKenzie Brown, Kayla Malyn Cotton, Lauryn Joseph Duncan, Symone' Alyse Evans, Dominique Suzette Fortune, Amani Ronica Grace, Bianca Amirra Gregory, Anaya Symone Hunter, Mackenzie Taylor Ingram-Montgomery, Sydnee Symone Jenkins, Ajanay Arianne Jennings, Siarah Ashanti Jones, Kaela Kristina Lawrence, JaMisha Marie Matos, Disheka Moniquie Moore, Shavonte Precious Phillips, Zoe Noel Powell, Kennedi Sinclair Saunders, Dalicia Donielle Simpson, Kyla Marshay Lerline Thompson, Dinah Lavette Walker, Kiersten Kiana Walker, and Artaja Desha White.

fore reporting on education in the aftermath of the tumult over busing to desegregate schools in Boston. Joining The Baltimore Evening Sun in 1981, she was assigned to report on local politicians — most of whom, she said, she found to be committed to public service. She left The Evening Sun in 1984, was hired by The Washington Post, and covered her first presidential campaign for that newspaper. As a neophyte, she was usually assigned to losing candidates who, aware of her specialty, were none too happy to see her coming. Ms. Ifill joined The New York Times in 1991, becoming a White House correspondent and covering Bill Clinton’s 1992 presidential campaign. In 1994, Tim Russert recruited her to cover Capitol Hill for NBC. On her first assignment, she forgot to take a cameraman along. In 2008, some supporters of Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska suggested that Ms. Ifill might be biased in favor of Senator Joseph R. Biden Jr., Mr. Obama’s running mate, because she was writing a book about Mr. Obama. Other Republicans, though, defended her as objective, before and after the debate. James Rainey wrote in The Los Angeles Times that Ms. Ifill had “reached a high standard for reason, fairness and class.”

“My job as a reporter,” Ms. Ifill explained, “is not to know what I think.” She joined “Washington Week” and “NewsHour” in 1999. Her 2008 campaign coverage earned her the George Foster Peabody Award. In 2012, she was inducted into the National Association of Black Journalists’ Hall of Fame. Last year, she received the Fourth Estate Award from the National Press Club. She was scheduled to receive the John Chancellor Award for Excellence in Journalism from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism this week. Her proudest moment, she said, was in 2011, when she found herself surrounded by civil rights luminaries as M.C. at the dedication of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial on Independence Avenue in Washington. Ms. Ifill saw herself more as a reporter than as a news anchor, program host or moderator. She was reluctant at first to be installed behind a desk in a studio. “I loved covering presidential politics not so much because of the candidates, but because of the people it allowed me to talk to,” she said. Would she ever have wanted to become a candidate herself ? No, she replied. “It’s much more fun to watch and to ask than to actually have to account for your behavior.”

Perspectives

By: Frank James Special to the Milwaukee Times

The Trump factor All over the nation people of color are outraged. Donald Trump has been elected President of the United States of America. The moans of dismay rang loud from New York to California. Some people were worried that racism would run rampant. Others were dismayed that a person of Trump’s intellect would become head of the nation. Is Trump bad for the country? Well, we shall soon find out because the USA has been Trumped. The fear Trump’s election has incited in people around the USA is amazing. People of color are shaking in fear.

It has been said Trump will send Latino people back to Mexico. I even heard Arab people were getting shipped back to the Middle East. The stories have been wild, and

in some cases, outrageous. Who would have thought the election of a reality television show star could cause such dismay? The gales of laughter rang throughout my

house. The thought of racism running rampant throughout the USA is hilarious. When has racism not run rampant in the USA? If Caucasian people suddenly pop up on African American doorsteps with ropes, this is what they wanted to do. Trump’s election will let people show their true nature. The nomination of one man doesn’t make a person a racist. The mental soil inside the person has to be fertile for such seeds to take root. If your Caucasian co-worker calls you a racist epithet, that is what they thought all along. Trump

didn’t dial them up and tell or make them do it. Trump’s election was based on making America great. To many America was great when there were not so many different people of color. This is funny because America’s great times came with African Americans being in America. The notion of sending African Americans back to Africa is ludicrous. True, the African American of 2016 isn’t the same one from 1970, but they still have uses. The same argument goes for other minorities. The integration of Latino and Arab people into USA society is far too ingrained. To start sending people back in masses would cause a vacuum on all levels of society. It would take a re-training, revamping of the education system in the USA. This would be needed to fill the positions that would be vacant by some of the minds that would exit. This process would take at least 15 to 20 years. Trump can only be president for eight, at most. African Americans are the one faction that has nothing to lose, but can gain. Any African American with a little sense understands racism. African Americans have been putting up with racism in the USA for 600 years. The nomination of Trump may make African Americans realize they are black again. African Americans are on the bottom of the totem pole, and often other people of color look down on them. If by some fluke Trump removed the other people of color, African Americans would have no choice but to go up. Trump’s nomination should bring some interesting times to the USA. Any African American who is blind to their skin may be in for a rude awakening. The true Black people will understand, adapt and possibly prosper. All people of color should rejoice because the true mindset of many Caucasians will be revealed. It is important to know where the hate is coming from, and Trump will allow the hate to finally show its face. This is the Trump Factor. The Counseling Corner

By Rev. Judith T. Lester, B.Min. M.Th

Building a healthy self-esteem (Part 1) It has been said that all of us grow up wounded because we all at one time have had to deal with our sense of wellbeing. Failures, past hurt, rejections, challenges and criticisms from others have caused us at one time or another to doubt ourselves. The doubt has left many with deep feelings of inferiority and to question their value and significance to God, the church, their families and to society. Remarkably, many people have survived life’s rejections fairly well, while others continue to carry the pain of inferiority and inadequacy into each aspect of their life. Since there are hurting people who are searching for a sense of self-esteem, this column will continue this month looking at how to build a healthy self-esteem. A twelve-step process has been developed by David E. Carlson entitled: “Counseling and Self-Esteem” which is designed to help people build their self-esteem. Due to space restrictions, only eight of the twelve steps will be included.

1. Acknowledge the problems low self-esteem produces. Low self-esteem develops as a result of what others say to us, how others look at us, what others feel toward us, and how others act toward us. These responses shape our own views, feelings and behavior toward ourselves. Some of the common problems of low self-esteem are guilt, over-sensitivity to criticism,

shyness, blaming others, embarrassment, etc. While this is not an exhaustive list, keep in mind that all people with low self-esteem do not necessarily exhibit them all. 2. Believe that loving yourself is acceptable to God. Self-love is not selfishness; self-affirmation is not self-conceit; self-worth is not self-worship; self-awareness is not self-absorption; humility is not humiliation;

putting off one’s sinful self is not putting oneself down; self-denial is not self-degradation; and unworthiness is not worthlessness. Self-love is the result of surrendering one’s narcissism (“I am the center of my world”) and accepting oneself as a reflection of God’s image. A biblical basis for believing that loving yourself is acceptable to God is found in Matthew 22:39: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 3. Believe God chooses to need you. Does God need people? God chooses to use people to be part of His redemption plan. This may sound heretical because God is self-sufficient, yet God has chosen to involve humans in the process of making Himself known to the world. This is not only exciting but also awesome. We are the physical representations of God to the world. When they see us, they see the place where God dwells. This is a sobering thought especially when we consider that what we say and do reflects the God who lives in us. Yet this truth gives all of us who believe in Him significance. Affirmation

that God chooses humans to do His redemptive work is found in the Sermon on the Mount: “You are the salt of the earth…You are the light of the world.” (Matthew 5:13, 14.) Accepting oneself as part of God’s redemptive plan is a crucial step in the process of developing a healthy self-esteem. Athena Speakers Bureau was pleased to present Dr. Steve Perry, national speaker and educational advocate at its first Speakers Bureau Event on Wednesday, November 15 2016 in the The Rep’s Quadracci Powerhouse on the complex issues impacting boys of color through the lens of education. Dr. Perry is a strong advocate of personal and civic responsibility in all aspects of life. He emphasizes the social issues that aim at building up both the individual and the community so that the next generation can be better contributing members of society. Advanced Placement Telepresence program expands students’ opportunities Each day, students at Riverside University High School attend their Advanced Placement Government class taught by Joseph Shokatz from his classroom across town at Vincent High School. They are among more than 120 Milwaukee Public Schools students who participate in AP Telepresence classes at seven high schools. The program, which has more than doubled in the last year, allows greater access to AP classes, including advanced level math courses and other college- level courses. The courses are taught using real-time videoconference equipment so that students and teachers can see, hear and interact with each other. Students also use Google Hangouts to work together in small groups across schools.

North Division High School seeks volunteer tutors The North Division High School Alumni Association is seeking volunteers to tutor students in reading, science and math. Tutoring will take place after school from 4:00 - 5:30 p.m. Tutors are asked to commit at least one day per week from February through May. We need assistance from the community in order to help our students succeed. courses on AP Calculus, AP Statistics, AP World History, AP Government, AP Spanish Language, and AP Macroeconomics. In the spring of 2017, MPS plans to add courses in Linguistics and an advanced Health elective. The expansion of the Advanced Placement Telepresence program is supported in a number of ways. Cisco provided MPS equipment for the 2015 pilot project. The Milwaukee Public Schools Foundation secured grant funding from two local foundations, the Greater Milwaukee Foundation and the Northwestern Mutual Foundation, to support this current expansion.

Students standing in front of the screen are in their classroom with our onsite facilitator Ms. Willis-Whitley at Riverside and the students visible onscreen are with AP Government teacher Mr. Shokatz at Vincent. “Our goal is to ensure that our students leave high school prepared to succeed in college and in their careers. Expanding our AP offerings through Telepresence ensures more students have the ability to take these challenging and rigorous courses,” said MPS Superintendent Darienne Driver. The district currently offers Telepresence courses at

Audubon, Bay View, Golda Meir, Milwaukee High School of the Arts, Milwaukee School of Languages (MLS), Riverside, and Vincent high schools. Milwaukee Marshall and Washington high schools also have Telepresence equipment. Washington will offer an elective class in the spring 2017 semester, and Marshall will offer classes in fall 2017.

The Greater Milwaukee Foundation grant provides funds to build the capacity of staff to design and deliver lessons using this technology. The Northwestern Mutual Foundation grant provides funds to support the equipment needed to implement the first phase of Telepresence coursework, which exThis fall, there are 122 stu- pands AP course offerings to dents from seven schools eight new school sites over enrolled in the program with two years. The program began last school year with two AP Statistics classes: one taught from Washington to Bay View and the second from Riverside to MLS. Black adoption myths and realities (part 2) By Sydney Duncan, MSW, ACSW Reality: The African American community responds to its children's needs Due to the disproportionately large number of black children in foster care, some believe that the African American community is not dedicated to providing care for the neediest of its children. In fact, quite the opposite is true. For more than two centuries, African American families have supported children in need by providing informal child care and foster care, and by welcoming relatives’ or friends’ children permanently into their families. The tradition of taking in needy or abandoned nieces, nephews, and grandchildren exists to this day, as evidenced by the high rate of informal and formal kinship care and adoption. When Homes for Black Children formed 36 years ago, traditional child welfare agencies put almost every black child who entered the child welfare system into long-term foster care. Newborns were considered unadoptable (many workers did not believe any other African American family would want them) and workers did little to reunify children and birth parents. At the same time, most African Americans did not even know these children were in the system. Very few worked in child welfare and white workers generally knew very little about stable African American families or their potential as resources for the children. When the first story about Homes for Black Children and the need for adoptive families was published, there came a deluge of responses from African American families interested

in adopting. Inspired by Homes for Black Children’s initial success, a solid network of specialized agencies, founded and led by African Americans, has responded to our children’s needs in the past few decades. Based in Los Angeles County, the Institute for Black Parenting is the largest of the black adoption agencies. It was founded in 1976 by a local chapter of the Association of Black Social Workers under the leadership of Zena Oglesby and Cynthia Willard. In 1980, Father George Clements started the first One Church, One Child program. Father Clements, who recognized the importance of and strength in black church traditions, rallied the African American religious community to promote adoption one congregation at a time. Through a federal grant awarded in 2003, the National Network of Adoption Advocacy Programs (NNAAP) was formed to promote and enhance faithbased adoption efforts modeled on the One Church, One Child program. Other black agencies include the ROOTS Adoption Agency in Atlanta; Mississippi Families for Kids; Another Choice for Black Children in North Carolina; and REJOICE! Inc. in Harrisburg, PA. ROOTS was incorporated in 1992 under the able leadership of Toni Oliver, an expert in training and preparing families for adoption. Mississippi Families for Kids is headed by former NACAC board president Linda West, and the nationally acclaimed Another Choice, which opened in 1995, has the dynamic Ruth Amerson at the helm. REJOICE!, a newer agency formed in 1998, is already having success placing and supporting teens.

Reality: African American families are willing and able to adopt At the time Homes for Black Children was formed, the prevailing belief in child welfare was that African American families were poor and already had as many or more children than they could afford. For some, that belief remains. We, however, knew that there were black families who were financially, emotionally, and spiritually capable of adopting. We knew about families who postponed having children to build a solid economic foundation for their lives, and then found they could not give birth. In our first six months of operation, more than 700 families from across the U.S. called or wrote to us about adopting. In our first year, with a staff of six, Homes for Black Children placed 135 African American children in adoptive homes—more than the other 13 metro Detroit child welfare agencies combined. These days Homes for Black Children, now very capably led by Jacquelynn Moffett, focuses much of its work on family preservation and prevention efforts. Even so, the adoption program— which Linda Lipscomb (formerly Whitfield) heads— still averages 40 completed adoptions per year, including placements for older children, sibling groups, and children in residential set-

tings. In addition, about 20 approved African American families are continually waiting, desperately hoping to adopt young black children. Other African American adoption agencies have similar pools of waiting families, so I am deeply saddened when I hear of agencies sending young black children to other countries for adoption because they believe there are no African American families who would adopt them. I am even more saddened to know that someday these children may grow up to believe that no one who looked like them wanted to take care of them. The perpetuation of this myth, I believe, is the result of looking at adoption as a service to families (who must then bear the brunt of the cost) rather than a service to children. Put another way, it is all about the money. Almost all forward thinking agencies strongly believe that adoption is a service to the child and, as such, the cost must be a public responsibility. Adoptive families are resources for children, and when we move away from this understanding, children start to become commodities. Given African Americans’ history of having been bought and sold during slavery, the thought of an agency selling (or a family buying) a black child today is understandably abhorrent. To protect our children, adoption must be viewed, and financed, as a service to the

child. Overcoming myths about black adoption Slavery and Jim Crow are difficult facts of life for American descendants of Africans. But to define us only in relation to the oppression we suffered, or those who became casualties of that oppression, is to ignore our vibrant life, strengths, and values. These are our realities: Most African American families are making a decent life for themselves and their children. They find support and comfort in family, community, and church. When black children enter foster care, extreme poverty and drug use are the most common underlying causes. Recognizing the plight of African American children without parents, black families have been responding to and helping children for centuries. Over the past three plus decades, a network of African American adoption agencies has also dedicated itself to finding homes for children of color. When adoption is presented as a service to children, and recruitment efforts involve and reach sensitively into the black community, African American families will come forward to adopt. There are yet many challenges that African American families and children must confront and overcome. But the broader community must not ignore black families’ strength, determination, and capacity to care for African American children. Our dreams live in our hopes for our children, and I believe that our families’ strengths will continue to fuel new and healing child welfare practices for children of color.

A vision to raise college scholarships through comedy In 2010, the Lois M. Chapple Scholarship Fund was established to offer college scholarships to students and their families within the community. Through strategic marketing and fundraising events, God blessed them with more than $15,000 in financial awards. The beginning of their journey started with the efforts of Lois M. Chapple recognizing a need to acknowledge the educational accomplishments of the high school graduates within their congregation, Brentwood Church of Christ located at 6425 North 60th St. This effort raised small financial “love offerings” for graduates. Their mission is to aid in the development of youth, to assist them with completing their education, and to empower them to achieve economic self-sufficiency. The foundation recognizes that one positive relationship can change the course of a young person’s life. Therefore, their program’s objective is to enhance the spiritual, moral, intellectual, social, emotional, and physical self of these students. Their largest and most popular fundraiser is the Lois M. Chapple Comedy Show, a professional comedy show

Hazel Miller Scholarship Coordinator that is held twice a year. The shows have brought positive energy and laughter to the community while providing a great family event that won’t break the bank. They have realized that the scholarship program was not just a vision, but a ministry to engage the support of the community as they work to make a positive difference in the lives of young people. The Lois M. Chapple Scholarship Fund offers students: • Financial scholarship awards • Care packages three times per year

• Bi-weekly text messages of encouragement • The opportunity to apply for and receive a scholarship each year for up to 5 years • Additional support and assistance throughout their college career • Access to educators for tutoring and career development • Assistance obtaining summer employment Another part of their dedication to the community is their toy give-away.
