North Sunrise Rotary Club dedicates public bench to promote community engagement

On Tuesday, November 1, 2022, The Milwaukee North Sunrise Rotary Club dedicated a neighbor hood bench located on the northwest corner of 55th and Center, near a Milwaukee County Transit bus stop. The neighborhood bench project was presented to our club by one of their members, Thanner Baque ro, a local resident of the Uptown Neighborhood. The purpose of the neighborhood bench is to encour age community engagement, provide a symbol of friendship, demonstrate caring for our neighbors and beautifying the neighborhood. Their decision on the neighborhood bench led them to believe that a public bench would contribute to the social and emotional well-being of the elderly, disabled and other individ uals that spend time at the 55th and Center Street bus stop. Pictured are North Sunrise Rotary Club Presi dent Diane Milner and members of the club.

Democrats defy 'red wave' to keep Senate control

Democrats took a post-election victory lap on Sunday, Novmeber 13, 2022, after retaining control of the U.S. Senate, defying Repub lican hopes for a "red wave" in the midterm elections, and turned their attention to Georgia, where a run-off contest could strengthen their hand in Congress.

Democratic leaders por trayed the better-than-ex pected performance as vindi cation of their agenda and a rebuke of election denialism and extremist candidates on the right, even as Republi cans edged towards control of the House of Representa tives with a handful of key races yet to be called.

"We were on the edge of autocracy and thank God the American people pulled us back in this election," Sen ate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said at a news conference on Sunday. Senate control was clinched late Saturday by Nevada Sen ator Catherine Cortez Mas to, who defeated former Ne vada Attorney General Adam Laxalt, who was endorsed by former President Donald Trump. That put Democrats in charge of a 50-50 Senate, by virtue of Vice President Kamala Harris holding the tie-breaking vote.

A Democratic victory in a Georgia runoff on Dec. 6 be

tween incumbent Democrat ic Senator Raphael Warnock and Republican challenger Herschel Walker would give the party outright majority control, bolstering its sway over committees, bills, and judicial picks.

"We're focusing now on Georgia. We feel good about where we are," President Joe Biden said on the sidelines of a meeting of Southeast Asian heads of government in Cambodia on Sunday.

Republicans, however, re mained close to seizing con trol of the House as officials continued counting ballots, with returns still flowing in for several races, including many in liberal-leaning Cal ifornia.

As of Sunday, Republicans had won 211 seats and the Democrats 206, with 218 needed for a majority. It could take several days before the outcome of enough House races is known to determine which party will control the 435-seat chamber.

Republicans were set to take their tally to 212 house seats by picking up Oregon's 5th congressional district, which includes suburbs of Portland and Salem, the As sociated Press projected Sun day evening. Republican Lori Chavez-DeRemer, a for mer mayor of Happy Valley, a Portland suburb, defeated

progressive Democrat Jamie McLeod-Skinner, according to the AP.

House Speaker Nancy Pe losi, 82, told ABC News and CNN that she would not make any announcements about whether she planned to remain in House leader ship until after control of the chamber was decided. There had been speculation she would resign if Demo crats lost the majority, espe cially after her husband was attacked by an intruder at their San Francisco home last month.

House Republicans, should they prevail, have pledged to try to roll back Biden-led legislation to battle climate change and want to make permanent a series of 2017 tax cuts set to expire. They also have vowed investiga tions into Biden administra

tion activities and probes of the president's son, who has had business dealings with Ukraine and China.

Jim Banks, a Republican congressman from Indiana, said on Sunday that he ex pected his party to win a slim majority in the House and serve as "the last line of defense to block the Biden agenda," while launch ing investigations into the U.S. withdrawal from Af ghanistan, the origin of COVID-19 and pandemic lockdowns.

"That has to be a focal point of every single com mittee in the Congress, es pecially in the House under Republican control," Banks said in an interview on "Fox News Sunday".

Focusing on Georgia Hovering over the 2022 midterm elections all year has been Trump, who used his continued popularity among hard-right conservatives to influence the candidates the Republican Party nominated for congressional, gubernato rial and local races.

With Republicans' lack luster performance - even if they win a narrow majority in the House - Trump has been blamed for boosting candidates who were unable to appeal to a broad enough electorate.

A Republican loss in Geor gia could further dampen Trump's popularity as advis ers say he considers announc ing this week a third run for the presidency in 2024.

The outcome may in crease the chances that Flor ida Governor Ron DeSantis, who routed his Democratic opponent on Tuesday, opts to challenge Trump for the 2024 presidential nomina tion.

In one of the most high-profile races yet to be called, Arizona Republican gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake is trailing Democrat Katie Hobbs by 1.5 percent age points, with an estimated 89 percent of the vote count ed, according to Edison Re search.

Lake is one of hundreds of Republican nominees who promoted Trump's baseless claims that the 2020 presi dential election was fraud ulent. She is also at risk of joining a sizeable group of Trump-endorsed candidates that have gone down in de feat.

The results suggest Demo crats had success in portray ing Republicans as extrem ist, pointing in part to the Supreme Court's decision to eliminate a nationwide right to abortion, which was enabled by conservative ap pointments to the bench.

Derek Mosley, a judge of the Milwaukee Municipal Court for 20 years, has been named director of Marquette University Law School’s Lubar Center for Public Pol icy Research and Civic Edu cation, Marquette President Michael R. Lovell announced on November 1, 2022. Mos ley, who was appointed Mu nicipal Court Judge in 2002 following a seven-year career as an assistant district attor ney for Milwaukee County, will begin his new role on Jan. 9, 2023.

“The Marquette commu nity is blessed to welcome Derek Mosley back to cam pus as the director of the Lubar Center. Our students and community will benefit greatly from Derek’s breadth of knowledge, keen under standing of social dynamics and extensive nonprofit ex perience,” Lovell said. “The Lubar Center serves as an important hub of public dis course in Milwaukee, and Derek’s deep connections and love for our city will help further the center’s mission in profound ways.”

A 1995 alumnus of Mar quette Law School, Mosley will lead the Lubar Center. In this role, he will conduct public events and work with colleagues to develop robust programming that will fulfill and expand the law school’s role as a public square for

timely and important public policy discussions.

“I am thrilled to be coming home to Marquette to serve the public good in new and valuable ways as director of the Lubar Center,” Mosley said. “It has been my great honor to have served the peo ple of Milwaukee for more than 27 years, first as a pros ecutor and then a presiding judge. I now look forward to the unique and exciting challenge of helping to ad vance public understanding of and discourse around mat ters of law and public policy through the city’s preeminent public forum.”

The Lubar Center is home to an expansive schedule of research and public program ming such as the Marquette Law School Poll, “On the Issues” conversations with newsmakers, public lectures by leading scholars, and con ferences on issues of public significance. The work of the Lubar Center advances Mar quette Law School’s mission to advance civil discourse about law and public policy matters.

“The law school has been engaged with the broader public since its founding, but our outreach and engage ment took on new forms and importance in 2007, with the appointment of Mike Gous

ha as distinguished fellow in law and public policy, and in 2017, with the establish ment of the Lubar Center,” said Joseph D. Kearney, dean and professor of law. “With Mike’s stepping back from full-time duties earlier this year, we searched for an indi vidual of inquiry and integ rity to continue and expand our work, as director of the center. His background and relationships in Milwaukee help make Judge Mosley uniquely qualified for this role, and I am grateful for his confidence and enthusiasm about his new role.”

“Since its inception, the Lubar Center has sought to be a public resource for this region, a home for import ant conversations, new ideas, and independent polling and research,” said Mike Gousha, who now serves as senior ad visor in law and public policy

at the law school. “As a re spected voice and innovative thinker on law and public policy matters, Judge Mosley is a terrific choice to build on the Lubar Center’s previous work and expand its reach in the years ahead.”

After graduating from Marquette Law School, Mos ley served as an assistant dis trict attorney for Milwaukee County from 1995 to 2002.

He was then appointed by the Milwaukee Common Council to fill the vacan cy in Branch 2 of the city’s Municipal Court starting on Aug. 1, 2002. At the time of his appointment, he was the youngest African American to be appointed judge in the State of Wisconsin. In August 2004, he was first appointed

Stress, distress, de-stress

You are experiencing either physical or emotional ten sion, which makes you ner vous, frustrated, or even an gry. If so, you have just come face-to-face with stress – a simple word that can com plicate mental health and well-being if it is not identi fied and managed.

According to the World Book Dictionary, stress is defined as “great or intense pressure, force or strain be yond proper or reasonable limits.” Stress occurs when the human body responds to a demand, threat or chal lenge. Stress can be a positive factor when it is experienced in short durations. Stress is what keeps humans basically alert to experience and re spond to daily living – meet ing deadlines, avoiding dan ger and performing work, for example. However, if stress lasts longer than the short bursts needed to function normally, damage to mental and physical health can be a by-product.

How can you tell the dif ference between good stress

and bad stress?

According to the National Institutes of Health, “good stress,” also known as acute stress, is short-term and goes away quickly. The feeling that results when you argue with your child or partner, slam on your car brakes to avoid an accident, or “get butterflies” in your stom ach during a job interview – these are all examples of acute stress that occur under normal circumstances.

On the other hand, ”bad” or chronic stress lasts for a longer time frame – weeks, months, or even years – with out respite. If you are in an unhappy or abusive relation ship, experiencing trouble re peatedly on the job, or deal ing with uncontrolled debt or health issues, you may be exposed to chronic stress. The bad thing about this is that a person may become so accustomed to chronic stress that they don’t realize it is not healthy and can be damaging to both mind and body.

Stress causes the body to

Over time, the protective shortterm mechanism this creates can put a person at risk of developing health problems, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, acne/ eczema, menstrual irregular ities, obesity and depression.

• You have recurring memories of distressing life events

• You experience signs of panic – dizziness, rapid heartbeat, or rapid breathing(hyperventilation)

• You cannot control feelings of fear

• You are unable to function effectively at home or at work

The bottom line: If you are experiencing stress, and es pecially if it is getting out of control, seek professional help. Your healthy life is the most important asset you will ever possess. Don’t wor ry about what anyone else may say or think about your decision to seek help.

Health-related DNA results from the All of Us Research Program

When you joined the All of Us Research Program, we told you that you may learn more about your health. One way we can help you learn more is by sharing informa tion about your DNA with you.

Right now, All of Us can provide you with two reports about how your DNA may affect your health. Those two reports are called your Hered itary Disease Risk and Medi cine and Your DNA

Hereditary disease risk

Hereditary means some thing that is, or can be, passed down from parents to children. Genetic variants, or

differences in your DNA, can be hereditary. Some can af fect your health. Certain ge netic variants mean you may have a higher risk of getting a disease than the average per son.

DHS announces new walkin location for Milwaukee Enrollment Services (MilES)

Starting November 1, 2022, Milwaukee Enroll ment Services (MilES) will serve Milwaukee County residents who participate in state benefit programs at a new location at 6055 North 64th Street. Members of pro grams such as BadgerCare Plus, FoodShare, and Wis consin Shares will have free parking, bus line access, and improved building accessi bility with first floor walk-in services.

“Based on feedback from our Milwaukee County members and partner orga nizations over the past sev eral years, we are pleased to be making this transition to a new location for MilES,” said DHS Secretary-designee Karen Timberlake. “This is a big move, and our team at MilES is dedicated to help ing members navigate this transition and get the help they need with their bene fits, whether through a visit to the new 64th Street or the existing UMOS location, by calling our call center, or by using our website or smart phone app.”

MilES also offers walk-in services at the United Mi grant Opportunity Services (UMOS) location, 2701 South Chase Avenue. Both locations have a “no wrong door” policy, meaning Mil waukee County residents can walk into either site to get the help they need.

The new MilES location on 64th Street offers:

• Free on-site parking for visitors and staff

• A location on a Mil waukee County Transit System bus route(link is external)

• Greater accessibility for

members who may be elderly, blind, or disabled “We are thankful for our time at the Coggs Center and our partnership with Milwaukee County at that location. Some staff will re main at the Coggs Center to provide options to cus tomers during this transition period while we continue to work with our members and partners and relocate to the new facility,” said MilES Di rector Tonya C. Evans. “The 64th Street location will have many new features. There will be upgraded technology like computers, iPads, tele phones, and video phones for members to use for self-ser vice. We want members to be able to work with us in the way that works best for them. In preparation for this move, all MilES locations, including our Call Center and UMOS facility, will be closed on Oct 31 and will re open at 8 a.m., on November 1.”

In addition to the walkin and self-service locations, members can also continue to manage their benefits or sign up for new services:

• Online, via access.wis consin.gov.

• On their smartphone, via the MyAccess Wisconsin app (available on Google Play(link is external) or the Apple AppStore(link is external)).

• By calling the MilES Call Center at 1-888-9476583.

MilES is a part of the Wis consin Department of Health Services Division of Medicaid Services. For more information about MilES, please visit the DHS website.

If you want to see your He reditary Disease Risk report, we will check your DNA for several genes that are as sociated with serious health conditions. You can find a full list of these genes on our website at JoinAllofUs.org/

hereditary-disease-risk. All of these conditions have treat ment or prevention options. If you are at a higher risk for them, knowing that infor mation can be important for your health.

In the genes we will look at, most people (about 98 out of 100) do not have ge netic variants that may in crease their chance of getting a disease. If we find that you do have a genetic variant that may increase your risk, you should confirm your All of Us results with a clinical DNA test. We can offer you that test at no cost. Then, you and your doctor or health care provider can decide if

you should make changes to your health care.

If your DNA results show you may have a higher genet ic risk for developing a health condition, it does not mean that you will definitely get it in your lifetime. It also does not mean that you have it now. It means that you have a higher chance of getting a certain health condition than the average person. Similarly, if you do not have genetic variants in the genes we will look at, you may still develop a serious health condition in the future.

to you by: Join Nanette and take away the tough choices during the holiday season

Growing up, Nanette learned the value of giving back to her community. Up until her early adult years, Nanette volunteered at the food pantry and soup kitch en in her community, not knowing that she would one day depend on these resourc es to make ends meet.

When a medical condition kept Nanette from working full time, she knew her fam ily would need to rely on the support of the local food pantry and soup kitchen and to apply for FoodShare bene fits. "We were used to taking care of ourselves and helping other people, not being the ones who needed help," Na nette recalls.

Unsure how to locate re sources and navigate the FoodShare benefit system,

Nanette called 211 and vis ited Robles, Hunger Task Force's FoodShare Resource Center on Mitchell Street. "When I first started accept ing help, I did not know any thing about the system," Na nette recalls. "I was so glad I

walked in and someone was there to help because I would not have been able to do it on my own. It was tough."

Nanette continues to use the resources she and her fam ily need to get back on their

feet. With rising food prices and heating bills chipping away at families' food bud gets, FoodShare has helped Nanette budget for other basic needs for the family. "FoodShare helped us to be able to provide clothing for the kids and school supplies and you know all the things that they needed," Nanette said. "We didn't have to wor ry about buying food. We could pay our bills."

With the holiday season approaching, family gather ings and a shared meal are at the forefront in most house holds. Nanette shares, "If I didn't have FoodShare and the occasional help from the pantry, the holidays would be meager. We wouldn't have much. With the economy how it is now, it's a bless ing to be able to provide a

Lena Horne Theatre dedication celebrates the relationship between the late performer and the Nederlander Organization

The Lena Horne Theatre is the latest Broadway house to be renamed for a black artist.

On November 1, 2022, the venue, owned by the Ned erlander Organization and the current home of “Six,” revealed its new marquee in a dedication ceremony and block party outside the the ater on 47th Street.

Led by Broadway royal ty (LaChanze, Audra Mc Donald, Tamara Tunie and Vanessa Williams — all founding members of Black Theatre United), speakers during the event also includ ed industry stalwarts (James L. Nederlander and Nick Scandalios), those with polit ical power (Governor Kathy Hochul, Mayor Eric Adams and NAACP Vice Chair Karen Boykin-Towns) and members of Horne’s family (including granddaughter Jenny Lumet).

“The Lena,” as Nederland er Executive Vice President Scandalios said the house will be nicknamed, marks the second Broadway the ater to be renamed this sea son, as part of the New Deal for Broadway brokered by Black Theatre United. The deal stipulated that “The Shubert Organization, the Nederlander Organization, and Jujamcyn Theatres will each have at least one of their

theaters named after a black artist.” Jujamcyn has long owned the August Wilson Theatre; The Shubert Or ganization renamed their Cort Theatre the James Earl Jones Theatre in Septem ber. The Lena (formerly the Brooks Atkinson) marks the first Broadway theater to be named for a black female art ist.

The Nederlander Organi zation chose Horne, specif ically, as the theater’s name sake because of “her career, her civil rights activism and her personal connection” to the Nederlanders. “Lena and my dad [James M. Neder lander] had a deep mutual respect,” said James L. Ned erlander in his remarks. “She was a sensational performer who opened her heart to my

father and I. As a producer on ‘Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music,’ my dad’s only advice to her was ‘Lena, do what you do best'.” That show, which opened on May 12, 1981 at the Nederland er Theatre, was scheduled to run just four weeks; it played for over a year (and featured Tunie as a replacement in the ensemble).

“Lena’s legacy will never die. It’s because of people like her that Broadway — theater, in general — and the entertainment industry made progress in the march towards racial equality, and it is our commitment at the Nederlander Organization to continue to be a part of this movement,” Nederlander continued.

Horne received a Special Tony Award in 1981 and won the Drama Desk Award that year for Outstanding Actress in a Musical for her perfor mance in “The Lady and Her Music.” She was nominated for two Primetime Emmys and eight Grammys, win ning three, including a Life time Achievement Award. Horne earned a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960, was inducted into the NAACP Image Awards Hall of Fame in 1982 and received a Kennedy Center Honor in 1984. Outside her career as an artist and enter tainer, Horne was an activist. A member of Delta Sigma Theta, a sorority founded in 1913 by 22 collegiate wom en studying at Howard Uni versity, Horne and her peer Leontyne Price co-chaired the sorority’s inaugural arts and letters commission to support black women in the

arts. In 2020, Michael Matu za, Jeb Gutelius and New York’s Town Hall established the Lena Horne Prize to hon or her legacy of “being at the center of arts and activism.” Beginning in 2023, the Lena Horne Theatre will be the home of that honor and its annual ceremony.

“She had magic. She had craft. She had courage. But for me her greatest strength was her imagination,” said Horne’s granddaughter Lu met. “Grandma had to battle for the right to her imagina tion.”

“To bear witness to a Broadway theater named in her honor, to take part in this momentous tribute to her legacy is a testament to the dedication to the ances tors to the efforts of countless heroes — Lena included — who sought to make positive change in the world,” said Audra McDonald in her clos ing remarks.

As Williams sang in her tribute, there has been “stormy weather.” But as LaChanze sang in her adjust ed lyrics to “I’m Here” from “The Color Purple,” “Lena’s beautiful. She’s beautiful. And she’s here.”

'Black Nativity by Langston Hughes' returns to kick off holiday season in Milwaukee

Black Arts MKE’s beloved holiday musical returns for its seventh year with its big gest and best production to date. Black Nativity by Langston Hughes runs one weekend only – December 8-11, 2022, at the Wilson Theater at Vogel Hall, Mar cus Center. Set in Milwaukee rather than Bethlehem, this joyous and hopeful re-tell ing of Hughes’ original 1961 play incorporates poetry, music, and dance from the African diaspora with an allblack, Milwaukee area-based cast.

Directed for the second year by Dimonte Henning, this year’s production de livers a fresh and inspiring take on the original musical. Henning’s newest rendition encourages theatergoers to continue to have faith and celebrate resiliency.

“This play is about triumph over tragedy. Black people in Milwaukee have had to overcome a lot, especially in the past two years, but we are still here and persevere because of the birth of Jesus Christ, and that is something to celebrate!” said Henning. “The message is love. Love for ourselves, for our neigh bor, and for our culture. If you come this year, you’ll see

that on full display through the joyful and healing pow er of Milwaukee’s black art community. I’m not going to lie, you may cry some cathar tic tears, but you’ll also be dancing and singing in the aisles.”

The creative team behind Black Nativity by Langston Hughes continues to elevate the production in music, dance, costuming, and set design. This year, profession al dancers Dos Feurtado and Ella Lakey collaborate with returning seasoned choreog rapher Christopher Gilbert to create new, jaw-dropping performances. Respected music producer Antoine Reynolds returns for his sixth year with new hip-hop ar rangements and a stage setup to better showcase his fellow musicians. Costume stylists Kyndal Johnson and Vato Vergara are evolving their

costume design to lean more into the afro-centric diaspo ra. Stage design will also grow to incorporate architectural pieces representing different parts of the city, in addition to new technical elements. Lastly, well-known spoken word performer Cedric Dale Hoard will start each act with a cypher highlighting the journey of Joseph and Mary and the black experience in Milwaukee.

The 2022 version of Black Nativity by Langston Hughes is sure to be an exhilarating and uplifting experience for everyone that attends. That is due, in part, to the envi ronment created by Black Arts MKE. Black actors and creators participating in their productions attest to the welcoming, family-like atmosphere that allows for authentic artistic expression.

“Through my first time performing in Black Nativi ty, a different part of myself came out,” said Terynn Er by-Walker, actress and Golda Meir High School student, “I never really let my ‘black self’ out completely before. Black Arts MKE helped me feel comfortable in myself. They’re like family. I can be unapologetically black! It’s a very empowering experi ence.”

Navigating recovery from an eating disorder is rarely easy, and the holiday season tends to be especially challenging. Family gatherings, disrupted routines, food-centered celebrations and more create an abundance of potentially triggering situations for people recovering from eating disorders.

You may find it beneficial to create a holiday-specific relapse prevention plan. The goal should not be to plan or control every aspect of the holidays or get through them without slip-ups. Rather, the goal should be entering the holiday season with a plan to help you avoid triggers, forgive and grow from slip-ups and embrace flexibility when things don’t go as expected.

To help avoid relapse while navigating the holiday season, consider these tips from the experts at Alsana, a national eating recovery com munity that serves adult clients of all genders through in-person and virtual programs:

1. Know your relapse triggers. Triggers are stimuli that create intense, uncomfortable or even intolerable emotions. These triggers can send you into a reactive state, making you vulnerable to compulsive behaviors or old coping mechanisms you used to rely upon for escape or distraction. If there are certain situations or topics you find difficult, be aware of them and have a plan to address or avoid them as needed.

2. Keep appointments with your care team. Because the holiday season is so busy, it can be tempting to put a pause on your recovery, but experts agree that’s not ideal. Keep meeting with your dietitian and attending therapy as usual. Even if you’re going home for the holidays, make it a priority to meet with your care team via phone or video chat.

3. Communicate with members of your support network. Let your close friends or family members know the season may be

difficult for you. Talk with them about any specific concerns you have regarding meals, routines, family or situations that may trigger you, and remind them how much you appreciate and rely on their encouragement and support. If you need additional reinforcements, Alsana offers free online support groups.

4. Set clear boundaries. Your loved ones can’t read your mind. Make sure you communicate with loved ones about what’s helpful, what’s OK and what’s not OK as you work to maintain your recovery. They may not get it right the first time around, but if you continue to self-advocate, your boundaries will become clear in time.

5. Practice stress management. Because even fun can be stressful, it’s nearly impossible to avoid holiday stress altogether, so make time for proactive stress management. Getting plenty of rest, spending time outdoors and taking time simply to pause can go a long way toward reducing stress and making triggers more manageable this holiday season.

6. Develop an exit strategy. Rehearse what you’ll say to duck out of a party or holiday gathering a bit early if you feel it’s necessary. Make sure your recovery is your priority, even if that means leaving your holiday dinner early or not participating in certain activities. Your loved ones will understand your need to protect your health.

7. Don’t forget to delegate. If you’re the one who typically hosts the family holiday gathering but don’t feel up to doing so this year, ask someone else to take it on. Or, if hosting is something you truly enjoy, find ways to share the responsibility, such as selecting a co-host or planning a potluck menu.

8. Practice gratitude. Gratitude can actually make you happier. In other words, your attitude can influence your outlook. Spend some time contemplating the things in life you’re thankful for every

day. Creating this positive frame of mind can help you feel better prepared to tackle the challenges the holidays can bring.

9. Follow your meal plan. Try not to deviate from your normal eating habits. For example, don’t skip breakfast because you plan on having a big holiday lunch. You’ve gained valuable lessons in treatment, so even if you’re feeling overwhelmed by all the hustle and bustle, try to stick to what you know but give yourself some flexibility.

10. Check in with your hunger and fullness cues. Understand reminders of your hunger cues – stomach rumbling or growling, feeling light-headed, having trouble focusing on tasks, head or stomach hurting – and reminders of fullness cues, such as pressure or discomfort in your stomach, sluggishness and no longer enjoying your food. These reminders are especially important when you’re at a holiday party to help you eat when you are hungry and stop when you are feeling satisfied or full. Eat mindfully but give yourself unconditional permission to have an extra taste or two of your favorite holiday foods without fear of derailing your recovery.

11. Don’t play the shame game. Shame tends to spiral and it only makes things harder. Recovery is not linear, so try not to look at slip-ups as deviations from your path, but rather vital opportunities to grow in your recovery.

12. Enjoy the holidays. Holidays can stir up emotions, memories and family dynamics. Give yourself permission to opt in or out of festivities as needed. While it may be tempting to fall into peoplepleasing behaviors or other old habits during the holiday season, consider instead starting your own recovery-minded traditions.

Stress Management Tools for the Holidays

The holiday season can be full of joy and family fun, but for some, especially those in eating disorder recovery, the occasion can be incredibly stressful. Consider these tips from the experts at Alsana to help you respond to stressors more thoughtfully and constructively:

1. Calm down with mindfulness practices, meditation or yoga.

2. Feel and vent your feelings through journaling, therapy and talks with loved ones.

3. Practice gratitude every day and be patient with yourself.

4. Create a go-to playlist to use when things feel overwhelming.

5. Develop a schedule that creates space for self-care.

Crust:

Cheesecake:

To make cranberry compote: In medium saucepan, bring cranberries, brown sugar, orange juice and orange zest to boil. Lower heat and simmer 10-15 minutes, or until most cranberries burst. Remove from heat. Cool completely at room temperature then transfer to bowl; refrigerate.

To make crust: Preheat oven to 350 F. Butter 8-inch springform pan and line bottom with parchment paper. Set aside.

In medium bowl, mix cracker crumbs, butter, brown sugar and salt. Press crumb mixture into bottom of prepared pan. Bake 15 minutes. Remove from oven and set aside. Reduce oven temperature to 325 F.

To make cheesecake: In bowl of electric mixer fitted with paddle attachment, beat cream cheese at medium speed until smooth. Add cane sugar and beat 2-3 minutes. Scrape sides of bowl as needed. Add flour, vanilla and salt. Beat 1 minute until incorporated.

Add one egg at a time, mixing until incorporated. Add sour cream and mix 1 minute. Scrape sides of bowl as needed. In medium bowl, mix half of cheesecake batter with 1/2 cup cranberry compote.

Wrap springform pan with aluminum foil and place in large roasting pan. Pour cream cheese and cranberry mixture into prepared pan. Top with remaining cream cheese batter. Place roasting pan in oven and add hot water to 1-inch of springform pan. Bake 1 hour, 15 minutes, or until cake looks set in center. Remove from oven and rest 1 hour. Refrigerate in pan overnight.

Decorate cake with fresh and sugared cranberries, rosemary springs and whipped cream.

A Hearty Holiday Side Dish

From appetizers and snacks to the main course, sides and sweets, almost everyone has a favorite holiday dish. However, it’s the pairings and complementary dishes that make festive gettogethers special.

This Creamy Au Gratin Potatoes with Kale and Gruyere is an ideal example of a savory side that goes well with a variety of holiday meals, making it a perfect option for families seeking a versatile recipe to serve with dinner. Rosy-skinned and white-fleshed, Wisconsin Round Red potatoes have a firm, smooth and moist texture, making them well-suited for roasting in this hearty dish. Creamy Au Gratin Potatoes with Kale and Gruyere

Recipe courtesy of Wisconsin Potatoes

1 1/2 cups heavy cream

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

2 cloves garlic, smashed

3 sprigs fresh thyme

2 tablespoons butter

3 cloves shallots, diced 4 large kale leaves, finely chopped (discard stems)

2 pounds red potatoes, sliced 1/8 inch

2 ounces gruyere cheese, grated

1 ounce Parmesan cheese, grated Heat oven to 325 F.

In small saucepan over medium heat, combine cream, salt, black pepper, garlic and thyme; stir constantly, until cream starts to bubble, 4-6 minutes. When bubbling, remove from heat and stir until slightly cooled. Let cream sit.

Heat large (12-inch) oven-safe skillet over medium-high heat.

Add butter. When butter melts, add shallots and kale leaves. Saute until kale is tender and bright green, about 4 minutes. Turn off burner.

Add sliced potatoes to skillet, fanning over top of kale.

Use slotted spoon to remove garlic and thyme from heavy cream. Pour heavy cream over potatoes.

Cover skillet tightly with foil and bake until potatoes are tender, 75-85 minutes.

Remove skillet from oven and turn on broiler. Discard foil.

Sprinkle gruyere and Parmesan cheeses over potatoes, tucking some cheese between potato slices.

Return skillet to oven and broil until top is golden brown, 5-6 minutes.
