Summer Lee will be PA’s first Black female member of Congress

Democrat Summer Lee, a state representative from western Pennsylvania, has become the state’s first Black woman to be elected to Con gress.

Lee, a lawyer and a former labor organizer, defeated Re publican Mike Doyle — not to be confused with Demo cratic U.S. Rep. Mike Doyle, whom Lee will be replacing. The Associated Press called the race Wednesday morn ing.

“It looks like we won an election,” Lee said during a press conference Tuesday night. “This was a move ment about what it looks like when we prioritize the most marginalized. This is what a real working class movement looks like ... It is a new day in Pittsburgh.”

Lee will be representing the heavily Democratic 12th District, which includes all of Pittsburgh and other areas of Allegheny Coun ty, along with a portion of Westmoreland County.

Pennsylvania’s 17-mem ber delegation has just one other Black representative in Congress — Democrat Dwight Evans, who rep resents Philadelphia. The state has never had a female or Black senator or gover

nor.

Throughout her campaign, Lee won endorsements from progressive members of Con gress, including Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cor tez of New York. Her win represents a big victory for progressives and, according to The Hill, she could be the latest member of Capitol Hill’s progressive “Squad,” a group of women lawmakers that includes Ocasio-Cortez, U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar (D., Minn.), Ayanna Pressley (D., Mass.), and others.

Youth-oriented organiza tions like the Sunrise Move ment — a climate change activist group — also backed Lee. In an interview with Teen Vogue, she discussed campaign strategies that centered around energizing young voters.

Lee grew up in North Brad dock and Rankin, boroughs

outside of Pittsburgh, and currently lives in Swissvale. The 34-year-old said she de cided to run for office while living with her mom, joking ly noting that Sen.-elect John Fetterman was not the only politico who lived with their parents as an adult.

She graduated from Wood land Hills High School, Pennsylvania State Univer sity, and Howard University School of Law. During her time at Howard, Lee interned with the NAACP Legal De fense and Educational Fund. After graduating law school, Lee described herself as “a dedicated organizer, activist and advocate for social jus tice in her local community.”

During her press conference Tuesday night declaring vic tory, Lee called her campaign a “multi-racial, multi-gen erational movement.” She mentioned her uphill battle against campaign ads and smear tactics she called “rac ist and fear-mongering” from GOP groups that supported her opponent.

“This is not over,” she said. “We’re going to take this en ergy. We have so much more work to do.”

The Rev. William Jackson was born the oldest of seven children and was raised on his grandfather’s farm in Alabama for the first 12 years of his life. That upbringing provided him with an early start when it came to both preaching and working.

“I’ve been preaching since I was 15 years old,” he said. “I also know what hard work is all about. We raised everything we needed on that farm. When I was 12-yearsold my great grandfather taught me how to pick cotton. I was born working.”

Pastor Jackson relocated to Milwaukee with his family at the age of 12. When he was 15 years old, he began preparing for ordination at Damascus Missionary Baptist Church in Milwaukee under the tutelage of the late Rev. M.F. Shackleford and he was ordained in 1965. For many years Pastor Jackson worked in sales, first at Gimbel’s for 26 years and then for 12 more years at a Boston Department Store.

Spotlight on Community

mission and the following year, it was organized as a church.

“When I first started Cornerstone, it was mostly family and then it grew from there,” he said. “People come and go, but we are still carrying on.”

Pastor Jackson believes he is the longest serving Baptist Pastor in Milwaukee and is hoping friends, family and colleagues will help him celebrate the 54th anniversary of his installation as a pastor at 3:30 pm on Sunday, December 4, 2022 at Rock Hill Community Baptist Church, 1200 West Burleigh Street in Milwaukee, Wisconsin

For the past 15 years or so, Pastor Jackson has relied on a motorized wheelchair to get around. He has been waiting for it to be repaired since September when it broke after many years of use. Pastor Jackson said he doesn’t spare a lot of pity for his own circumstances, but the lack of mobility does make it more difficult

to achieve his goals and stay connected with friends and family.

“Usually when I want to go somewhere, I rely on Transit Plus to take me and pick me up,” he said. “When you have to depend on others for rides, errands and so on, you often have to wait for someone else. That’s just the way the system is set up and I’m grateful that I have friends and that there is a transit service that can assist.”

Pastor Jackson said that the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced the closure of public worship at churches in Wisconsin, was a much harder blow to his ministry than being confined to a wheelchair. He expressed profound gratitude to his congregation and his many friends and supporters who have helped keep Cornerstone current on its bills and other obligations during the past three years.

times

If you were alive and con scious during the decade of the 1960s, you may remem ber it as a time of relative in nocence that built up to rad ically changing mores. For women, it was a time of com ing out front, finding a social and political voice, and being recognized as individuals and as an important demograph ic group.

A focal point of that rise in stature was the growing body of popular music that served as the soundtrack of those times and that was heard coast to coast on AM radio as well as popular teen dance programs on television, such as American Bandstand, Re cord Hop and Shindig.

Beehive: The 60s Musical is a revue that showcases the pop music of the 1960s from the female perspective. now running at the Milwaukee Repertory Theater’s Stack ner Cabaret through Sunday, January 15, 2023.

The performance features a score comprised of more than 30 songs made popular by “girl groups” – such as The

There is no real storyline to Beehive. Instead, the songs and lyrics are allowed to speak for themselves and provide a looking glass into the social constructs of the times. The songs from the early years of the decade were largely about teenage angst and male-female relation ships. The traditional pointof-view portrayed females as being willing to do what ever to attract and keep the

attention of a male admirer. Waiting by the phone for his call, breaking up and making up, and remaining true to the relationship/”going steady” played prominently in the song lyrics. Some examples:

“Where the boys are, some one waits for me…”

“Baby, Baby…please don’t leave me all by myself…”

“Why was he holding her hand, when he’s supposed to be mine? It’s my party and I’ll cry if I want to…you would cry, too, if it happened to you…”

As the decade progressed, the social atmosphere evolved more toward female

self-determination, as did the songs. More women opted for careers outside the home; and demanded the right to control their own bodies, emotions, and life choices.

“Don’t tell me what to say…and when I go out with you, don’t put me on dis play…’cause you don’t own me.”

“All I’m asking is for a little RESPECT when you come home…”

“You’ve gotta make your own kind of music, make your own special song, even

if nobody else sings along…”

These pop music classics were delivered by a multi cultural cast comprised of Jackey Boelkow, Sarah Lynn Marion, Tess Marshall. Jamie Mercado, Desiree Tolodziec ki, and Amaya White. Their rich vocals combined in du ets, trios and quartets, as well as soloists to deliver the musical goods. Minimal set design allows the audience to focus on the music and the message, without the distrac tion of elaborate set decora tions.

Audience members can just sit back and enjoy the perfor mance of Beehive and reflect – through the music – on how far women have come… and how far we still have to go in order to continue to perfect the social and politi cal climate.

Tickets for both matinee and evening performances of Beehive: The 60s Musical are available by contacting The Milwaukee Repertory Theater box office, 108 East Wells Street, Milwaukee, WI 53202, 414/224-9490; or for more details, visit the website www.MilwaukeeRep.com.

Racism is #1 factor in preterm birth disparity

As a black woman Podiatric Surgeon, I know all too well the stressors that contribute to poor health outcomes and healthcare disparities. My So rority, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, annually contributes to the March of Dimes. As a young girl, I remember trying to fill a page with dimes to donate from my allowance to help Mothers and Babies through pregnancy. It was the March of Dimes that convened a work group of profession als to explore the causes of the black-white disparity in preterm birth rates between 2017 and 2019.

After reviewing 456 arti cles, the work group con cluded that the effects of racial prejudice is the num ber one cause of the health care disparity between black women and white women with regard to preterm birth.

The effects of racism in clude stress from lifelong experiences of discriminato ry practices, environmental injustice responsible for ex posure to toxins from air pol lution, and socioeconomic factors regarding multi gen erational poverty.

Racism is experienced by black people from a young age even when they’re not mature enough to quite figure out exactly what is going on. Prejudicial treatment in pri mary schooling often results in punitive suspension and/ or expulsion from school that puts that child at a disadvan tage for entering college and the labor market down the road. Public schools in black

communities are so chron ically underfunded it’s de grading. This results in lack of access to things such as ex tra curricular activities, quali ty coursework, and advanced coursework. These are all ma jor contributors to how well prepared for life and college black students become. Our first black female Supreme Court Justice strongly at tributed her success to access to the extra curricular activ ities available to her in high school.

Blacks are far less likely to get a bachelors degree and rarely from a prestigious in stitution.

For those black women who were successful getting bachelors degrees and ad vanced degrees and entering professions on the doctorate level, the question was posed

as to whether this socioeco nomic advantage would skew the incidence of preterm birth in a direction compa rable to white incidence of preterm birth, and the oppo site was found. It was discov ered that upwardly mobile black women do not make the income attributed to their degrees that their white counterparts with the same education command. There is also the additional stress of increased racial prejudicial treatment in being the only Black woman in their area with this type of education and professional responsibil ity. Upwardly mobile Black women remain likely to live in toxic, segregated Black communities.

The stress of prejudicial treatment from slavery and 100 years of Jim Crow con tinuing to this day contrib

utes to changes in the body. That stress causes inflamma tion, temporary vasoconstric tion, elevated blood pressure, immune system changes, and behavioral changes. That in flammatory stress response experienced during pregnan cy results in depression, anxi ety, prolonged elevated blood pressure, and a higher inci dence of preeclampsia. And, of course, economic hardship is a major stressor, too.

Environmental injustice is linked to red lining. Red lines were drawn on maps to mark areas unsuitable for liv ing based on the toxicity of the environment. Businesses that pollute the air, water, and soil, usually locate in these redlined communities. These were the areas where blacks were allowed to live. These redlined neighbor hoods allowed the banks and insurances to charge higher interest rates, charge more for their services, or deny ser vices altogether. Red lining financially and unfairly mar ginalizes blacks while unfair ly advantaging whites.

These redlined communi ties have greater air pollution, water pollution, and soil pol lution than areas that are not red lined. There is a lack of trees and plants in these communities to provide for natural reduction of air pol lution and protection from the heat. These areas are heat islands with a higher heat in dex in the summer and are more flood prone than other communities.

The particulate matter prevalent in air polluted communities provide toxic exposure that contributes sig nificantly to preterm birth. Particles are small enough to enter your lungs and your blood stream increasing the development of asthma, di abetes, heart disease, prema ture death, preterm birth, and other poor health out come conditions. Environ mental injustice, a form of structural racism, identifies the disproportionate expo sure to toxic substances in black, segregated, redlined communities.

Socio economic stressors are also related to prejudi cial practices in hiring, wag es, and promotions. These circumstances systemically perpetuate poverty in the black community. Concen trated poverty, chronic stress, exposure to environmental hazards, lack of employment opportunities, limited access to green space, limited access to healthcare, and limited ac cess to leisure activities and exercise contribute to higher incidence of mental health problems, violence, and crime.

The black community con tributes the least to the global warming crisis but suffers the most consequences. We can change these circumstanc es by partnering with our elected officials to negotiate change. Global warming is only insurmountable when no one is willing to try. To gether, there is nothing we cannot do.
