Kayne West donates $150,000 to family of slain security guard Rapper Kanye West donated $150,000 to the family of a Chicago-area security guard who subdued a gunman firing at and wounding bar patrons only to be shot to death by a white cop called to the scene to help. West’s donation was posted on a Go Fund Me Page, first published online. He made 10 donations of $15,000 each. Since his donation, the amount of money raised for Jemel Roberson, the dead security guard, has grown to more than $305,000. The donation adds to West’s complicated legacy by some who question his sanity for hugging President Donald Trump, wearing a red “Make America Great Again” baseball cap and saying slavery was a choice for African Americans. On the other hand, in August 2005 when Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans neighborhoods and black people were standing on their rooftops holding up hand-written signs pleading for help while watching the

Bush never visited New Orleans, the site of much of the destruction. He flew over it, unlike President Lyndon Johnson, who went to the area after flooding decades earlier. With his face illuminated by a flashlight, Johnson crawled into a dark shelter where people were huddled and said, “ I’m your goddamn president and I’m

going to get you out of this.” Black people believed President Bush did nothing to help blacks stranded in New Orleans, but West said it. West, a Chicago native, who now lives in California, donated the money to Roberson’s family. Roberson, 26, was working security on November 11 at Manny’s Blue Room Bar in the mostly black suburb of Robbins, IL. Earlier, the bar’s employees demanded that some of the customers

West donates $150,000 (Continued from pg. 2) leave because they were too drunk. One of the men who had been kicked out returned to the bar and began shooting, wounding several customers and the bartender. Roberson, who was wearing a baseball cap and jacket with words “Security” printed on them, returned fire before wrestling the gunman to ground in the bar’s parking lot. When police from Midlothian, IL, a nearby suburb, arrived, the cop, who has only been identified as white, shot and killed Roberson as onlookers screamed “security” to let the cop know Roberson had stopped the shooting. Illinois State Police are investigating the deadly shooting in Robbins, but they have not named the cop. The Illinois State Police’s account of what happened greatly differs from what the bar patrons claimed occurred. Roberson’s family has sued the Midlothian Police Department for $1 million in federal court. Protesters have demanded that the Cook County, IL, State’s Attorney charge the cop with murder and that the cop resign. Roberson was married and the father of one child with another on the way. He also was a church organist. He graduated from Lane Technical College Prep High School, one of Chicago’s most prestigious high schools. He played basketball there and the team held a vigil after the shooting to honor him. He grew up in Wicker Park, a Chicago neighborhood.

COMMUNITY COLUMN UWM basketball players embark on the trip of a lifetime By Pat Baldwin Men’s head basketball coach University of WisconsinMilwaukee

UWM men’s basketball coach Pat Baldwin knows a trip to Northern Ireland is a rare educational and team-building opportunity for the Panthers. ing in the Belfast Hall of Fame Classic, part of which is held in Northern Ireland’s capital city. The tournament was scheduled for the early part of our 2018-2019 season. It included home games at UW-Milwaukee Panther Arena on Nov. 20 and 23, then we’d head “across the pond” to Belfast a few days later. A week of sightseeing would be followed by two more games in Belfast,

played Friday, Nov. 30, and Saturday, Dec. 1. It seemed like a great way to combine learning, team-building and competition. To Ireland we’d go. Traveling and playing in Belfast is just as much an educational opportunity as it is a basketball road trip. For many of our student-athletes, it marks their first time in Europe. I wanted to help them make the most of their chance to immerse them-

and impact our lives moving forward. But we weren’t forgetting about our business on the hardwood, which wouldn’t be easy. Our first opponent in Belfast – the University at Buffalo – was a 2018 NCAA Tournament team. Yes, I love the opportunity to visit the countryside and experience the culture, but I want to win games as well. I looked forward to seeing how we’d fare away from home, in an international locale and against opponents enjoying the same experiences as us. It would be fun to compete and see how we stacked up. It all made me nostalgic for the days when I was a student-athlete. What I wouldn’t give to be a college player again and embark on the experience of a lifetime, just like the world-class one that awaited in Belfast. Instead, I’m fortunate enough to do the next-best thing – watch the players I’m proud to coach experience it for themselves.

The

When we talk to our young men, be they current or future University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Panthers, we want to assure them that their time here will be a world-class experience. I picked up that mindset during my playing career, which included two years of pro ball in Europe, and from my coaching stops before I became Milwaukee’s head coach in 2017. Our UWM players have the opportunity to attend an excellent university. They engage with other students in and out of the classroom, and they learn from a great group of faculty members and administrators, all right here in Milwaukee. But I always keep an eye out for experiences that will expand their worldview while helping our team form tighter bonds and produce better results. So I was excited when we were approached about play-

selves in the Irish culture. Before the trip, we brought in a guest speaker to talk about Ireland, including the culture, politics, traditions and other facets that make it unique. We learned that Belfast struggled under decades of violence in the last half of the 20th century. But the city has since redefined itself and is now a popular tourist destination. As the trip approached, we looked forward to our time together there as a great opportunity to build camaraderie and provide natural lessons in team building. It would be especially valuable, because this season’s team has so many new members who come to us from different places, backgrounds and walks of life. I knew the trip would allow us to learn more about each other. We’d be spending more time together outside of the basketball gym, communicating with each other face to face rather than looking at our smartphone screens. It’s the type of experience that can go beyond the hardwood

The HIV/AIDS epidemic has been afflicting our country for more than three decades and is a disease that severely affects marginalized communities. It’s a wellknown fact that Black people account for more than 13 percent of the population and 43 percent of new HIV infections, the majority being gay and bisexual men and transgender women. But the question remains, why are so many black people disproportionately carrying the disease? Unfounded theories usually attribute this to black people engaging in riskier behavior, leading to contracting the disease. While not dismissing the fact that personal responsibility should always be taken into account, there has been no substantial evidence that has found that black populations engage in risky behaviors at any higher rates than other races and ethnicities. With that being said, it’s time to have a conversation about the REAL reasons behind why black people suffer more at the hands of this pervasive disease. Here are three factors that impact black people in the struggle with HIV:

means lack of education, lack of access to proper healthcare, increased risk of substance use, homelessness, mental health issues and heightened likelihood of participating in sex work for their main source of income. Obviously, all of these are factors that can dramatically increase the risk of contracting HIV. For those living in poverty who become HIV-positive, priorities are skewed. Their survivalist mentality only lends itself to concerns on a day-to-day basis are finding and maintaining income, finding their next meal and ensuring a safe place to sleep at night.

Lack of support communities Although interracial dating is a practice that’s starting to become more widely embraced in the United States, black people remain the minority group that has relationships outside of their race the least, at 19 percent. This means that the majority of black people have sexual partners who are within their race and more than likely have the same limited experiences and localized view of life.
