Della Reese, 'Touched by an Angel' star and singer, dies at 86 Della Reese, who rose to fame as a jazz singer and later found television stardom on the drama "Touched by an Angel," has died on Monday, November 20, 2017. She was 86. "On behalf of her husband, Franklin Lett, and all her friends and family, I share with you the news that our beloved Della Reese has passed away peacefully at her California home surrounded by love. She was an incredible wife, mother, grandmother, friend, and pastor, as well as an award-winning actress and singer," actress Roma Downey, Reese's co-star on "Touched by an Angel," said in a statement on Facebook. "Through her life and work she touched and inspired the lives of millions of people," Downey's statement continued. "She was a mother to me and I had the privilege of working with her side by side for so many years." For nine seasons on CBS, Reese played Tess on "Touched by an Angel," tasked with sending angels to Earth to help people redeem themselves. "We were privileged to have Della as part of the CBS family when she delivered encouragement and optimism to millions of viewers as Tess on "Touched by an Angel," CBS said in a statement to CNN. "We will forever cherish her warm embraces and generosity of spirit. She will be greatly missed. Another angel has gotten her wings." Like many during her era, Reese got her start in the black church, where she began singing at the age of 6. When she was 13, Reese snagged a gig with gospel legend Mahalia Jackson after another lyric soprano became pregnant and was unable to tour. "Mahalia was magnificent," Reese told the Archive of American Television in 2008. "I didn't particularly like her because she didn't let me do what I wanted to do. I thought when I got away from my mother on the road, I'd be able to get down and break it loose and do all the stuff she wouldn't let me do. Mahalia was stricter than my mother." Reese went on to sign a record deal with indie New York label Jubilee Records and in 1957 landed at No. 12 on the pop chart with the ballad And That Reminds Me. Her initial success caught the attention of RCA, where her hits Don't You Know and Not One Minute More helped secure her place in the music industry as an R & B/pop vocalist. Reese would later become known for her live jazz performances. But it was acting that broke her into the big time.

England's Prince Harry engaged to American actress Meghan Markle He is a flame-haired former wild child, who courted controversy in his youth. She is a biracial, divorced actress from abroad. Together, they are taking the British monarchy — that most conservative of institutions — into a more modern era. Prince Harry, a grandson
of Queen Elizabeth II and fifth in line to the throne, is engaged to Meghan Markle, his American girlfriend, the royal family said on Monday, November 27, 2017. The prince, 33, and Ms. Markle, 36, will marry in the spring, a statement from Clarence House added.

Prince Harry and Ms. Markle’s engagement underscores recent shifts in the British monarchy. They are part of a new generation of royals eager to project themselves as modern, inclusive and down-to-earth. This latest set of royals, who include the duke and duchess of Cambridge — Prince Harry’s elder brother, William, and his sister-in-law, Catherine — have in recent years tried to connect better with the public. Prince Harry and Ms. Markle are expected to be known as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex after they are married, according to the British news media, although she may be known informally as Princess Meghan. If Prince Harry were to decline the dukedom, he would remain Prince Henry of Wales — his official name. The pair have dated for more than a year, and made their first official outing together in September in Toronto at the Invictus Games, a Paralympic-style competition for wounded or sick members of the military and veterans. Like his brother, Prince Harry grew up in the public eye, first as a son of the heir to the throne, and then as an adolescent struggling over the loss of his mother, Princess Diana, who died in a car accident when he was 12. His
— have drawn the ire of the royal family. The prince himself issued an unusual statement last year, denouncing the “racial undertones” of news coverage of Ms. Markle. Prince Harry’s reputation has changed markedly in recent years. In his younger days, he acknowledged wanting to be a “bad boy,” but he has emerged as possibly Britain’s most popular royal.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle grief played out in what he described as “total chaos” in his 20s, a period that was gleefully pounced on by the tabloids. The relationship of Prince Harry and Ms. Markle also has been the subject of intense scrutiny. The announcement of their engagement ended days of fevered speculation by the British news media, some of which, in anticipation of the event, tried to find any royal connection with Ms. Markle. (The Daily Telegraph breathlessly reported an unverified study showing that Ms. Markle’s ancestor was an aristocrat who was beheaded by Henry VIII, a distant relative of Prince Harry.) But other stories about Ms. Markle’s ethnicity and middle-class background — her mother is an African American psychotherapist and yoga instructor and her father is a Caucasian lighting director
But he has matured since those early years, say his defenders, becoming a vocal advocate for mental health awareness and for other charities. He has also spoken openly about the difficulties he faced after the death of Princess Diana. Ms. Markle describes herself as biracial. She graduated from Northwestern University in Illinois in 2003, and married in 2011, divorcing two years later. She is best known for her roles in the television legal drama “Suits” and in the science-fiction series “Fringe,” and she appeared on the cover of Vanity Fair in September. Ms. Markle is also notable for her charitable work — she is a global ambassador for World Vision Canada — and she has worked for gender equality and women’s empowerment.

Rep. Moore and Mayor Barrett host press conference on ACA open enrollment On Monday, November 27, 2017, Congresswoman Gwen Moore (WI-04) joined local leaders to remind constituents that they only have two more weeks until December 15, 2017 deadline to shop for quality, affordable health insurance on HealthCare.gov. Despite confusion, the Affordable Care Act is still law so insurers are required to offer discounts; in fact, subsidies may be even higher this year. Pictured at the event are (from left) U.S. Congresswoman Gwen Moore; Mayor Tom Barrett; Progressive Community Health Centers CEO Jenni Sevenich.

COMMUNITY COLUMN UWM basketball coach Pat Baldwin emphasizes community service By Dan Simmons
Baldwin’s family – wife Shawn, son Patrick Jr., and daughters Tatum, Brooke and Claire – have often been involved in outreach efforts. A quick scroll of his smartphone photos shows the family donning hairnets after helping fill food bags or dressed in running gear for the Race Against Hate, a Chicago-area event that raised money for YMCA racial justice and violence prevention programs.
Pat Baldwin, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s first-year men’s head basketball coach, knows how much fans mean to the Panthers. But he wants his Panthers to mean even more to those fans, as well as all of Milwaukee, and to do so far beyond the basketball court.
He’s seen the impact even small gestures by his players and staff can have on kids. Make collecting family health history part of your holiday plans For some, being home for the holidays means lots of extra family time, often with multiple generations coming together to celebrate under one roof. Most likely, your conversations at this time will center around what’s new at work or what trip you went on over the summer. This December, we’re asking you to take advantage of this rare opportunity to take the conversation in a different, proactive direction. Bright Pink is a national nonprofit focused on the prevention and early detection of breast and ovarian cancer. As up to 25 percent of breast and ovarian cancers are familial or hereditary, having an understanding of your family health history landscape can act as a powerful roadmap for you and your healthcare provider. We want to help you understand why it’s important, what information to collect, and what to do with your family health history when it's collected. The facts Having a first-degree relative (a mother, sister, grandmother) who has had breast or ovarian cancer can double your risk. And, if their cancer was the result of a genetic mutation, that can be passed down across generations by either parent. When this happens, your risk of breast cancer can be as high as 87 percent and as high as 54 percent for ovarian cancer. There are many actions that women can take to reduce their risk or detect these cancers early (the 5-year sur-
vival rate for breast and ovarian cancer when detected early can be greater than 92 percent!) but it takes an initial understanding of that risk to identify what actions may be most meaningful for your health. Your holiday game plan Between travel delays, turkey cooking time, and holiday shopping plans, the holidays can become jam-packed. That’s why Bright Pink wants to help equip you with the tools you need to gather your family health history and assess your risk, and a game plan to fit it all in to what can be a hectic long-weekend.
thing you can. Ask: Who had cancer? What type of cancer? How old were they at diagnosis? Step 2: Explain why you are asking. These conversations can be difficult and talking about family health history may not be part of your normal dinner discussions. Consider starting the conversation this way: “I recently read about how family health history information can help prevent disease or diagnose it early. I realized that I don’t know much about this in our family! Do you mind if I ask a few quick questions to help Step 1: Collect your ques- understand what this could tions beforehand. mean for my health?” Or, When looking at your family health history, both your parent’s sides are equally important in determining your personal level of risk. While breast and ovarian cancer history is important, other types of cancer can also be indicators of an inherited genetic risk—so capture every-
bring it up while discussing what you’re thankful for – your health, and knowledge that generations of women before us didn’t have access to – knowledge that when you know your risk, you can be proactive! Step 3: Collect what you can. This process isn’t foolproof, and you may have to do some digging to get all of this information. If you aren’t able to answer every question, don’t let that discourage you. You’ve taken an amazingly proactive step by collecting what you can. Step 4: Assess your risk After you’ve learned as much as you can about your family health history, it’s time
to put that knowledge to work. Visit AssessYourRisk. org to complete a digital quiz that asks questions about your family health history, personal health history, and lifestyle to deliver a personalized report on your baseline risk for breast and ovarian cancer. Email this report or print and bring it to your next primary care appointment! A new holiday tradition The last item of your game plan might be the most important: sign up for Bright Pink emails so we can remind you to ask about family health history again next year. This isn’t a one-anddone practice. Family health history can change from year to year. A new development could end up being the most important piece of information you need to be proactive about your health. Make sure you’re following Bright Pink on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter for Thanksgiving Game Plan tips and inspiration all week leading up to Turkey Day. To learn even more about family health history and how that relates to your personal risk of cancer, visit Bright Pink’s ExploreYourGenetics.org.

Thirty ultimate tech gifts for every person on your holiday shopping list side table, operating as an alarm clock that can also tell you the weather forecast, read the latest news headlines and more. What to know: The Echo Spot includes a camera, which some people may not want in their bedroom.
(part 1 of 2) Here comes the 2017 holiday season, and that means it’s time to round up our favorite tech gifts and gadget stocking stuffers. These are some of the coolest ideas we've come across, from coveted game consoles like Nintendo’s retro Super NES Classic or Microsoft’s ultra-powerful Xbox One X, to cutting-edge smartphones like Samsung’s Galaxy S8 and Apple’s iPhone X. We’ve sorted the list of tech gifts by price, from least to most expensive, with notes about what makes each gift special. 1. Philips Hue Starter Kit ($69) Who it’s for: The smart home beginner looking to dip a toe in the Internet of Things. Why we like it as a gift: The Philips Hue system is the perfect entryway to the smart home, offering color and brightness controllable lights in an easy-to-install package. It can also be voice controlled via Siri and similar apps. What to know: Make sure to keep your light switches on and control the Hue from your phone instead. 2. Nintendo Super NES Classic ($79) Who it’s for: Those who grew up in the 1990s and remember what a tectonically vanguard system this console was, or those who didn’t and want to understand why. Why we like it as a gift: You get 21 vintage Super NES games, including the nev-
er-before-released Star Fox 2, a pair of replica controllers for local two-player, HDMI support for crisp digital output on modern TVs, post-processing filters to optionally make the visuals appropriately retro, all for just $79. What to know: It’s in high demand and incredibly difficult to find, so plan accordingly, and keep an eye on stock checkers like Nowinstock or Wario64. 3. Amazon Echo ($99) Who it’s for: Anyone looking to turn off the lights or check the temperature with their voice. Why we like it as a gift: Amazon’s second-gen Alexa voice assistant-powered Echo offers several enhancements over the original, such as better audio and a more compact design that includes a fabric finish. Plus at $99, it’s cheaper than the first-generation Echo. What to know: It’s best for hands-free shopping and smart home control. 4. Google Daydream ($99) Who it’s for: Someone look-

ing to play around with virtual reality that already has an Android phone. Why we like it as a gift: It’s a relatively inexpensive way to introduce someone to virtual reality, and arguably the most comfortable one, both in fit and weight. It’s also less stylistically garish, foregoing stereotypical black plastic for a softer cloth material, which comes in multiple colors. What to know: You can find the list of Daydream-ready phones right here. 5. Amazon Echo Spot ($129) Who it’s for: People who want an alarm clock that can do way more than wake you up in the morning. Why we like it as a gift: The Echo Spot sits on your bed-
6. BioLite CampStove 2 ($129) Who it’s for: Outdoorsy techies who want to keep their gadgets charged at the campsite. Why we like it as a gift: The BioLite CampStove 2 burns wood to keep your phone charged while you’re camping. It also doubles as a camp stove for boiling water and more. What to know: Bring a couple extra chargers with you on your camping trip to ensure you’ve got enough power for every device. 7. Western Digital MyPassport Hard Drive 4TB ($129) Who it’s for: A friend in need of a portable storage tool with future-proofed space for data like photos and videos. Why we like it as a gift: It’s the gift that keeps on giving. It offers serious storage
headroom for someone who wants to backup their family photos and videos, or for a professional who works with larger files, say in audio or video, in need of a primary or secondary portable storage or backup tool. What to know: The price varies slightly if you want to buy it in alternate colors, but the underlying hardware is exactly the same. 8. BeatsX Wireless Headphones ($149) Who it’s for: Runners and other athletes looking for a killer pair of wireless earbuds. Why we like it as a gift: The BeatsX sound great, they fit comfortably and they stay put when you’re running or working out. What to know: The neckband is fine at the gym, but it doesn’t win points for style on the street. 9. Garmin Speak ($149) Who it’s for: Anyone driving an older car without an infotainment system, or who wants to use Amazon’s Alexa voice assistant behind the wheel. (Continued on pg. 13)

Sphero’s version has exactly the right motions, sounds and more, and it’s easily controlled via a smartphone app. What to know: It can take a little practice to get used to steering R2 around.
10. HP Sprocket 2-in-1 ($159) Who it’s for: That person in your life who still prefers prints of photos, or who wants the modern equivalent of a Polaroid. Why we like it as a gift: The HP Sprocket 2-in-1 lets you or anyone else you approve print 2-by-3-inch photos wirelessly from a smartphone or tablet, anywhere you go. It’s compact enough to fit easily in a small bag, and it includes a 5-megapixel camera, so you can alternately snap and print without smart device. What to know: It’ll connect to popular social media tools, so you can direct-print photos stored online, too. 11. 14. Amazon Kindle Oasis ($249) Who it’s for: Someone who spends lots of time reading during a commute or by the pool. Why we like it as a gift: Amazon’s new Oasis is notably thinner and lighter than the company’s other e-readers. Since it’s water-resistant, you can feel safe taking it to the pool or the beach. And unlike the previous Oasis, you don’t need to use it with a charging cover to maximize battery life. It also supports Audible playback and has a larger and brighter screen than its past models. What to know: You can buy a 32 GB model for $100 more, but since the average size of a Kindle book is a trifling 2.6 MB, the 8 GB version should more than suffice.

13. AKG N60 Wireless ($249) Who it’s for: Urban commuters and open-office workers looking for some peace and quiet. Why we like it as a gift: The AKG N60 wireless headphones sound great, they’re comfortable for hours of listening, and their active noise cancellation keeps the music in, and the world around you out. What to know: You’ll have to make sure to keep them charged.
15. Fitbit Ionic ($299) Who it’s for: Anyone who wants a smartwatch with more options than Fitbit’s Blaze, and who prioritizes fitness above all else. Why we like it as a gift: The Fitbit Ionic has a new fitness coach that can guide you through workouts on the wrist. The watch’s heart rate sensor, unlike those found on rivals, also includes a relative SpO2 sensor that tracks oxygen levels in the blood over time. And Fitbit’s Ionic can keep tabs on your sleep, something other watches require third-party apps to pull off. What to know: Its app catalogue is pretty small at this point. (Continued next week)

YOU THINK YOU CAN HIDE IT. Covering up a gambling problem becomes a game of its own. You try to hide it from family, friends, employers or even yourself, until the day comes when you can’t anymore. It’s a game you just can’t win. If you or someone you know has a gambling problem, talk to us. We’ve heard it all. We can help. Call the Problem Gambling Helpline at 1-800-426-2535, text 920-888-4357, or visit wi-problemgamblers.org.
