Sherman Phoenix hosts grand opening celebration

On Friday, November 30, 2018, the Sherman Park neighborhood celebrated the grand opening of the Sherman Phoenix, 3536 W. Fond du Lac Ave., a unique marketplace built by the community after the riots of 2016. The project, developed by Juli Kaufmann (center photo, right) and Jo Anne Johnson-Sabir (center photo, left), aims to foster change by transforming the eastern gateway to the Sherman Park neighborhood in Milwaukee into a safe, welcoming space that supports small businesses-of-color offering diverse foods, wellness services and cultural activities. The project will also act to provide mentorship and coaching to help entrepreneurs of color grow their businesses. Small business own-

ers like Honey Bee Sage Wellness and Apothecary's, Meshika Stewart and Angela Mallett (right photo, from left) who want to grow their business to generate jobs and support the local economy. The Sherman Phoenix is a model for healing our city by generating positive economic and social returns in communities of color. To symbolize this, the project chose the former BMO Harris Bank building that was heavily damaged by fire during the riots of 2016 to be the focal point of the new Sherman Park neighborhood that will feature high quality spaces for small businesses-of-color, as well as spaces for art exhibits, film showings, and cultural events.

Milwaukee Fire Department celebrate Milwaukee Fire Recruits graduation On Friday, November 16, 2018, the Milwaukee Fire Department (MFD) celebrated the commencement ceremony of the Milwaukee Fire Recruits class of 2018. Among those graduating where Tahj Lea (front row, center), the son of Torrey Lea and Pam Malone, who at the age of 20 has decided to forgo the college career track in architecture and pursue a career with the Milwaukee Fire Department. The fire cadet program consists of 22 months of training and work experience which includes college level coursework in firefighting, pre-hospital medicine, and general education subjects such as foreign language, anatomy, and physiology. Upon successful completion of the Fire Cadet Program and passing a physical ability test, fire cadets may be promoted to the rank of fire recruit and upon completing the MFD recruit class, they will officially be an MFD firefighter.

On Saturday, October 27, 2018, Pastor Joseph Hamilton Jackson, Jr. and First Lady Brenda Jackson of Friendship Missionary Baptist Church celebrated their 5th Anniversary at the Crowne Plaza Milwaukee West Hotel, 10499 Innovation Drive. The Jacksons were joined by their family, friends and church family for the theme of "Christ Celebrated~Pastor Appreciated," and were honored by many close friends and other pastors who offered many kind words and praise for Pastor and First Lady Jackson.
