Local basketball teams and drumlines compete in 11th Annual Fresh Coast Classic

The 11th Annual Fresh Coast Classic (FCC) took place this past Thanksgiving weekend. The signature basketball event featured 26 Milwaukee-area high schools in a 13-game series on Friday, November 24 and Saturday, November 25 at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Klotsche Center, 3409 N. Downer Ave. The Fresh Coast Classic showcases the top Milwaukee City Conference high school basketball teams matched up against the top Southeastern Wisconsin suburban high school basketball teams. Fresh Coast Classic has featured notable players who have advanced to collegiate and professional basketball leagues. The Fresh Coast Classic took a break from basketball on Saturday,

November 25 at 3:30 p.m., to host the MEGA Drumline Showcase. Area drumlines, including several MPS schools, competed for top honors in drumline precision and creativity, with Rufus King taking first place. NAACP Youth Council receives Eunice Z. Edgar ACLU Lifetime Achievement Award

The Commandos and NAACP Youth Council received the Eunice Z. Edgar ACLU Lifetime Achievement Award for “demonstrating an extraordinary commitment to the defense of civil liberties and civil rights.” The award ceremony on November 8, 2017 at the Italian Conference Center also marked the 50th anniversary of “200 Nights of Freedom,” a 200-day initiative that seeks to recognize and re-ignite the spirit of Milwaukee’s historic 1967 open housing marches.
