Local basketball teams and drumlines compete in 11th Annual Fresh Coast Classic

Photos by Kim A. Robinson

The 11th Annual Fresh Coast Classic (FCC) took place this past Thanksgiving weekend. The signature basketball event featured 26 Milwaukee-area high schools in a 13-game series on Friday, November 24 and Saturday, November 25 at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Klotsche Center, 3409 N. Downer Ave. The Fresh Coast Classic showcases the top Milwaukee City Conference high school basketball teams matched up against the top Southeastern Wisconsin suburban high school basketball teams. Fresh Coast Classic has featured notable players who have advanced to collegiate and professional basketball leagues. The Fresh Coast Classic took a break from basketball on Saturday,

November 25 at 3:30 p.m., to host the MEGA Drumline Showcase. Area drumlines, including several MPS schools, competed for top honors in drumline precision and creativity, with Rufus King taking first place. Pictured at the event are the Fresh Coast Classic Board of Directors (left photo, from left) Victor Barnett, Dawn Barnett, chairman Willie Wade, Russell Stamper, II, and general manager R.W. Thomas. Facebook photo shows workers of hired city subcontractor carrying handguns at job site

Members of the Milwaukee Common Council are outraged at a Facebook photo showing an employee of a subcontractor hired by a company working for the Department of Public Works openly brandishing a handgun next to two coworkers openly carrying holstered handguns at a worksite near N. 19th and W. Meinecke Streets.

"The human body is going thorough horrendous medical issues today, so let’s look into the possibility of correcting these problems naturally."

Alderman Russell W. Stamper, II, in whose 15th District the photo was taken, said he is shocked and angered by the image. “Behavior as dangerous and disrespectful as this is appalling and has no place in any neighborhood and by Common Council Presiany city contractor, subcon- dent Ashanti Hamilton said tractor or representative,” he he has been told the owner said. of the contracting company were summoned to meet “If this is a real, untouched Tuesday, December 5 with photo I would like this indi- DPW Commissioner Ghasvidual and that crew removed san Korban. “I will be imimmediately from the site mediately following up with and barred from any future Commissioner Korban to city projects,” said Alderman see what was discussed and Stamper, chair of the Com- to determine future worksite mon Council’s Community requirements and superviand Economic Development sion with this contractor,” he Committee. said.

“The behavior exposed in this photo is something we do not tolerate or dismiss or condone in any way with individuals who work with or for the city,” she said.

“I will be working with my colleagues on possible legislative measures to make sure this type of behavior will not happen again on any future city projects,” Alderman Stamper said.

“This is a prime example of public input and information-sharing that can help us do our work more effectively and that could actually lead to important changes in city policy,” she said.

Alderwoman Milele A. Coggs, chair of the Finance and Personnel Committee, said the photo reflects poorly on the subcontractor and is now being shared widely on social media.

“I and other members of the Council appreciate it when the public steps up and shares information about city projects and city work in general that we may not be aware of,” Alderwoman Coggs said.

John Conyers to retire from Congress amid harassment claims Representative John Conyers Jr., under intense pressure to resign amid multiplying allegations that he sexually harassed former employees, announced Tuesday, December 5, 2017, that he would leave Congress immediately, and he endorsed his son, John Conyers III, to succeed him. Mr. Conyers, 88, the “dean” of the House and the longest-serving African American in history, acquiesced to weeks of pressure from fellow Democrats, but by trying to keep his Detroit-area seat in the family, he touched off a family feud between his 27-year-old son and his great-nephew, Ian Conyers, a state senator from Michigan who also plans to run in a special House election. In a phone interview, Ian Conyers said that his great-uncle encouraged him to run for the seat days before deciding to step down. Now the two younger Conyerses will most likely face off in what may become a

battle over the legacy of Mr. Conyers, considered an icon to many black people. “I said, ‘Sir, if you decide that you’re going to retire, give me a heads-up because I’m going to run for your seat and keep doing the work that you have been up to',” Ian Conyers said. “He said, ‘Absolutely. You go for it. Run’.” Representative Conyers held out for weeks after BuzzFeed News published documents last month that showed that he had settled a sexual harassment case with

an employee who said she was fired after refusing his advances. But by Tuesday morning, he had given in. “I am retiring today,” he told “The Mildred Gaddis Show,” a local radio program, from a hospital in Michigan. “I am in the process of putting together my retirement plans.” He continued to deny that he had harassed former employees and said he did not know where those allegations came from. The retiring congressman took his House seat in 1965, the last sitting lawmaker to help enact the Great Society programs conceived by President Lyndon B. Johnson. He also did not waver from his stance that he did nothing wrong and called the accusations against him false. “Whatever they are, they are not accurate,” he said. “They are not true. I cannot explain where they came from.” Rep. Conyers said the allegations were just part of life as a lawmaker.

Join us as we host Dr. Lester Carter, Jr., R.Ph., holistic health advocate, local icon and author of the book, Healing the Human Body with God's Remedies. In a special holiday event, he will talk about and answer your questions on healing and preventing illness with all natural and holistic tips and remedies. Let your best gift this year be your continued health and well being.

The Counseling Corner

By Rev. Judith T. Lester, B.Min. M.Th

Counseling Corner 2017 year-in-review Wow! It is hard to believe we are nearing the end of 2017. This column began 2017 by challenging our readers to think about how they have been growing spiritually. This column kicked off the year with an article entitled: “Ignorance is Not Bliss.” Readers were challenged to diligently study God’s Word. As the people of God, we must be well-grounded in God’s Word. If you do not study, you become susceptive to falling into the trouble traps of false teachers. We are fortunate to have the Bible, which is replete with foundations that are Christ-centered and dependable. We must study it, meditate on it and apply its doctrinal principles to our everyday lives. In April, readers were asked in response to the issue of climate change: “How Woke Are You?” Readers were reminded that as stewards, we are to take care of the Earth, use its resources wisely, neither exploiting, destroying or treating it recklessly. While some still doubt climate change is real, there is evidence that humans are contributing to climate change

in significant ways. It’s time to move beyond just talking about the consequences of climate change; but begin committing ourselves to being “woke” that devastating droughts, flooding, wildfires, and the effects of climate change affect us all and can no longer be ignored. As the year ends, in October, focus was placed on mental health awareness in articles entitled: “Mental Health Matters!” Faith and community leaders were encouraged to help educate individuals and families about mental health, increasing awareness of mental health issues and making it easier for people to

seek help. Community connectedness and support, like that found in faith-based and other neighborhood organizations, are also important to the long-term recovery of people living with mental illnesses. As we prepare for 2018, allow this writer to take this opportunity to thank the readers who nominated me as a recipient of the 2018 Milwaukee Times Black Excellence Award. I am pleased, extremely humbled and honored to accept the award. This nomination and award is a powerful reinforcement of what you have come to expect from this column –

EXCELLENCE! This award and recognition will encourage me to continue to bring to you articles that are quality, timely, enlightening and that will help you to continue to grow in your faith. Because so many of you (the readers) have contributed to this honor as well as my growth as a writer, I will accept the award on February 23, 2018 on behalf of all of us, including the owners, publisher and editors of the Milwaukee Times Weekly Newspaper for providing me the freedom to write on issues at this writer’s discretion and as recommended by our dedicated and faithful readers. As has been the practice for nearly the past two decades, this column will take a break for the balance of December and will return in January, 2018. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your life. Have a Merry Christmas and a blessed and safe New Year. In His Service and By His Grace, - Rev. Judith T. Lester

Milwaukee Public Schools continues to make progress in improving the quality of education in the district. As shown on the 2016–17 Wisconsin District Report Card, released this week by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, MPS has increased its overall score slightly as compared to the 2015–16 report card. The district remains in the Meets Few Expectations category, but made improvement in priority areas measured in the report card. Improvements were realized in both the Student Growth and Closing Gaps areas. While district progress toward On-Track and Postsecondary Readiness remained the same, the district did see an uptick in the four-year graduation rate and a decrease in the dropout rate. The four-year graduation rate increased to 60.9 percent, up from 59.3 percent. The dropout rate declined to 5.1 percent in the 2016–17 school year compared to 5.7 percent the previous year. “While we have improvements to celebrate, the areas of attendance, absenteeism, and improving academics continue to be major challenges for the district,” said MPS Superintendent Darienne B. Driver. “We have been and continue to devote

significant time and resources in these key areas. We are focused on moving more students from below basic to basic and from basic to proficient.” The district has added or expanded a number of initiatives designed to promote student achievement: expanded credit recovery options, enhanced Summer Academy, new College and Career Centers, standards-based report card grading, and a greater focus on equity, including a new Department of Black and Latino Male Achievement. Compared to the 2015-16 school report cards, more MPS schools now Significantly Exceed or Exceed Expectations. Four of the schools that failed to meet expectations have been closed: Universal, New School for Community Service, BEAM, and Community High School. Thirty-four schools moved up one category and 81 remained in the same category as the previous year. Thirty-one schools declined one category as compared to last year’s report cards. For more information about efforts MPS is engaged in to improve student achievement, visit the Initiatives & Strategic Planning section of the MPS website.

Five ways to reduce arthritis pain Living with arthritis can be very painful. It is often described as a sharp, burning sensation or extreme pressure at the joints. Arthritis is a condition that literally means “joint inflammation.” This inflammation can occur at any area where two bones meet. Some symptoms of arthritis are: pain, redness, joint swelling, trouble moving around, weight loss, rash or itch, difficulty breathing and fever, per the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases. This pain limits patients in their daily tasks, and can prevent them from living healthy lifestyles. Luckily, there are several ways to manage the symptoms in an attempt to make daily tasks tolerable. The Arthritis Foundation shares some insight on how to reduce pain. Stay on top of your medications . Medications play a key role in the management of your pain. The prescriptions and over-the-counter medications can significantly control your pain and inflammation if taken responsibly. Manage your weight Your weight is a large influ-

ence on arthritis. The pressure that is put on the joints, specifically hips, knees and ankles, comes from the excess weight of your body. So, one way to counteract that is managing your weight by staying active. Participating in regular exercise is helpful when living with arthritis. Also, keeping a close eye on your diet will help to lose excess weight. Watch what you eat and the amount of servings you eat. Keep on an anti-inflammatory diet One way to lower pain and inflammation is to increase your intake of foods that help control inflammation. The main staple item of this diet is fish, such as salm-

on, tuna, sardines, and anchovies. What makes these foods beneficial is their richness in omega-3 fatty acids which reduce inflammatory proteins. Another is fruits and vegetables, such as blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, cherries, spinach, kale and broccoli. These fruits and vegetables are full of antioxidants, which help the immune system. Nuts and seeds are a great source of monounsaturated fat, protein and fiber that makes them reliable when it comes to managing inflammation. These nuts and seeds include: walnuts, pine nuts, almonds, and pistachios. Olive oil has antioxidants,

monounsaturated fats, and oleocanthal, all of which are responsible for lowering inflammation. The best food for this source is extra virgin olive oil because it is less refined, meaning it contains more nutrients versus the standard varieties. Beware of these ingredients A person living with arthritis should be mindful of the ingredients that can cause inflammation. Sugar is a tough ingredient to avoid because it is present in so many food items we consume. However, processed sugars are a main trigger to release cytokines, inflammatory messengers. Trans fats are another trigger of inflammation. These fats are found in a plethora of fast foods and other fried products, including frozen breakfast products, cookies, donuts, crackers and margarine. Foods that contain omega-6 fatty acids can cause inflammation and pain. Omega-6 fatty acids are needed at a healthy rate, but when overconsumption occurs people begin to feel the inflammation. These fatty acids are found in sunflower

oil, grapeseed oil, peanut oil, vegetable oil, mayonnaise and salad dressing. White flour products (breads, crackers, rolls), white rice, potatoes and several cereals are enjoyed by many people, but they are responsible for inflammation. These foods have a high-glycemic index which stimulates inflammation. Warmth is key Warmth can help alleviate joint pain due to its ability to stimulate blood flow. The use of warm compresses, heat pads, or even warm baths are great options for this. Warm baths are also helpful because they reduce the force of gravity put on the joints, and allow for movement. Stretching the joints while soaking in warm water is relaxing and effective. Living with arthritis does not have to be painful. There are many tips and tricks that can be used to reduce pain and inflammation. We’ve seen that they can be as simple as taking a warm bath. Give these tips a try, and watch how your arthritis will become more tolerable.

Samsung CHG90 Series Curved 49-Inch Gaming Monitor ($1,499) Who it’s for: High-end PC gamers who want a gorgeous, quasi-wraparound screen. Why we like it as a gift: It’s ridiculously boutique, but with a crazy 32:9 aspect ratio and 3,840-by-1,080-pixel graphics, anyone rocking one of these is going to be able to experience the latest games with insanely beautiful visuals. What to know: It supports high dynamic range, super-fast response times and refresh rates, and a boatload of options designed to let you tweak the output to match any experience.

30. LG C7 Series OLED65C7P - 65" OLED Smart TV - 4K UltraHD $2,699.99 Who it’s for: The ultimate TV/movie viewing fan who wants the best picture quality for the ultimate viewing experience. Why we like it as a gift: Relax and enjoy your favorite films, sporting events or shows on the expansive 65-inch screen of this LG 4K HD TV. Active HDR with Dolby Vision creates an immersive experience with clear images. This LG 4K HD TV features a thin OLED design, giving the television a slender silhouette that doesn't take up much space. What to know: It has 3840x2160 resolution, 2.2 channel speaker system, and built-in wi-fi.
