Northwest Family Activity and Events Center hosts 4th Annual Mrs. O'Bee Toy House

On Sunday, December 9, 2018, the Northwest Family Activity and Events Center hosted its fourth Mrs. O'Bee's Toy House, at 4034 W. Good Hope Road. For the past four years the staff of Northwest Funeral Chapel opens the doors of the event center and allows local children between the ages of 1 to 8 years to come and pick out a toy for the holidays. The children and their families are also treated to activities and goodies provided by the friends of Mrs. O'Bee, as well as a visit from the man himself, Santa Claus. Bethel Baptist Church honors Maestro Douane McDowell for 35 years of musical service On Friday, December 7, 2018, Bethel Baptist Church honored Maestro Douane McDowell for his 35-plus years of musical service to Bethel Baptist Church in a special celebration entitled, "The Sound of Music," at 2030 W. North Ave. The event featured choirs and performers from all over Milwaukee who came to honor the musical talents of Mr. McDowell. Recording artist and Pastor of Macedonia Baptist Church Rodney Cunningham was the keynote speaker. Mr. McDowell was awarded with a trophy and flowers from the church for his work and accomplishments (inset). On Saturday, October 27, 2018, Canaan Baptist Church held a special event to honor their congregation's senior members. All of the 40 honorees were members who are 80 years or older. WEDC awards $750,000 to four minority business organizations

On Monday, December 10, 2018, the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC) announced it has awarded $750,000 to four statewide minority chambers of commerce to support their efforts to assist minority-owned businesses. The funds are being awarded to the African American Chamber of Commerce of Wisconsin, the American Indian Chamber of Commerce of Wisconsin, the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Wisconsin and the Hmong Wisconsin Chamber of Commerce. The organizations will use the funds to support operations that include access to capital through revolving loan funds, business training workshops, financial awareness programs, assistance with securing financing, networking opportunities and one-on-one mentoring. In 2017, the four minority chambers were officially designated as Key Strategic Partners, a recognition of partnership that strengthens WEDC’s commitment to the minority business community and recognizes the chambers’ specialized skills and proven track record of success. In the last year alone, the four groups provided services to more than 300 businesses around the state and conducted 48 workshops on business development topics. Under the terms of the WEDC contract, the chambers also will pass through some of those funds to other organizations serving minority businesses. The award amounts and the additional organizations benefiting from those funds are: • African American Chamber of Commerce of Wisconsin, $200,000. Funds will also support the Wisconsin Black Chamber of Commerce and the Madison Black Chamber of Commerce. • American Indian Chamber of Commerce of Wisconsin, $175,000. Funds will also support the Wisconsin Business Alliance, which is made up of First American

Rep. Moore's bill honoring Vel R. Phillips’s legacy is signed into law

Last week, Congresswoman Gwen Moore’s (WI-04) bill to designate the US Post Office located at 2650 North Doctor Martin Luther King Drive in Milwaukee as the “Vel R. Phillips Post Office Building” was signed into law. Vel Phillips inspired profound activism in the City of Milwaukee. Her movement influenced the congressional fair housing debates and led to the enactment of the Fair Housing Act in 1968. As the first Black official elected to Milwaukee’s Common Council and the first Black member of the Democratic National Committee, Vel was also a prolific trailblazer. “Vel was a soldier for civil rights. She paved the road of change and lifted up our city’s dream for equality and prosperity for all. Today, I stand on her shoulders and take solace knowing that her legacy of love, service, and commitment now will

Funds will also support the Latino Entrepreneurial Network and the Wisconsin United Coalition of Mutual Assistance Associations. “WEDC has a longstanding relationship with these organizations, which are instrumental in providing minority-owned businesses with the capital and resources they need to succeed,” said Mark R. Hogan, secretary and CEO of WEDC, the state’s lead economic development organization. “Our investment in the minority chambers is critical in supporting their efforts to provide direct assistance to minority-owned businesses and employers within their respective communities.” In addition to this support, WEDC is also investing a total of $500,000 in the Wisconsin Women’s Business Initiative Corporation, the Wisconsin Veterans Chamber of Commerce and the Wisconsin LGBT Chamber of Commerce, and in the expansion of the Kiva microloan program to support minority-owned, veteran-owned, and women-owned businesses in our designated downtown districts across Wisconsin. Since 2011, WEDC has invested $4.3 million in nonprofit minority business associations across Wisconsin because they are well con-

nected in their respective communities and best positioned to award loans for maximum impact. The announcement comes as WEDC prepares to host MARKETPLACE 2018, the Governor’s Conference on Minority Business Development, which takes place December 12-13, 2018 at the Potawatomi Hotel and Conference Center in Milwaukee. The event is expected to draw more than 600 attendees and is sponsored by corporations, small businesses and organizations, with U.S. Bank being this year’s Keystone Sponsor. MARKETPLACE is the premier annual statewide business capacity-building conference for minority, woman and veteran business owners looking to do business with state, federal and local governments as well as the private sector. The conference provides opportunities for businesses to meet with dozens of potential buyers, identify funding sources, connect with business assistance resources and network with other businesses. The conference kicks off Wednesday with the popular Small Business Academy for new businesses and entrepreneurs. This free half-day training academy will provide participants with practical advice from experts on topics covering small business lending, free business assistance resources, and ways to plan, start and grow a profitable business. The Governor’s Awards Luncheon on Thursday, sponsored by the Milwaukee Business Journal, will recognize outstanding businesses owned by minorities, women and service-disabled veterans. More than 300 nominations were received this year for businesses of all sizes and from a diverse range of industries across the state.

Being Frank

The perfect gift for a child Many parents in the USA are planning to purchase Christmas gifts for their children. Many are looking to buy clothes or shoes for their child to wear. In the African American community, parents are mimicking their white counterparts by buying to excess. A vast number of African American children receiving these gifts are a colored mockery of their white peers. There is one gift that doesn’t cost anything that African American parents need to give their offspring– a reality check. African American youth in the USA are some of the best-dressed students in any school. If the school doesn’t have a uniform dress code then you can believe African American students have the market cornered on Nike, Jordan, True Religion, etc. This fact will be glaringly showcased after Christmas. In these same schools the African American students are also the ones with the disturbing blindness about

where they are or status in the USA. The gift of reality about African American status and the state of the USA is something their parents need to give African American students on Christmas Day. I’m sure all African American parents love or at least care for their children. Yet it seems as if these same parents set their children up for failure or exploitation. I have witnessed African American youth in schools that are so out of touch with the African American experience in the USA it is mindboggling. In the USA African Americans are systematically being manipulated into servitude or death. African American youth seem to be oblivious to this because the parents do not inform them of the situation all African Americans face in the USA. This has to stop. When I was growing up every African American I knew had parents that told them, “You have to be two

times better than white children in the USA to make it.” I asked a group of African American youth in 2018 had they ever heard this statement. The response from every one of the youth was a blank stare. This is preposterous in the least. African American adults know that it is pressure and borderline pain living with the monetary chase that is called working in the USA. How will it be in the future when there is

no middle class jobs, factory or warehouse that pay decent wages? What will any teen face entering the job market with only a high school diploma? How will it be for an African American teen entering the job market with anything less than a bachelor degree? With a degree an African American may wind up loading boxes for minimum wage. Many African American students have a sense of entitlement similar to white students. This is another failure assumption on the African American student's part. The breaks white people get in the USA are not ones African Americans receive, especially uneducated ones. African American parents need to stress that education is a major tool to get them what they want in life. Education is not salvation, just something to use and not use the African American student. Parents need to give their children the real story of working in the USA. Par-

ents need to share the good and bad stories about being African American in a White based society and work force. This gift of reality needs to be implemented gradually starting in 1st grade. A reality check costs nothing and will assist an African American student far more than an I-Phone 7. African American parents, feel free to lavish gifts upon your children this Christmas Season. Do not forget to give them the ultimate gift in a nice reality check. That is, African American parent, if you are able to give a reality check. Hamilton retires jersey of alumnus and pro player Kevon Looney Kevon Looney was in good company as he entered the gym at Alexander Hamilton High School this week to see his high school basketball jersey retired. Accompanying Looney were not just a few friends and teammates, but the entire Golden State Warriors team, including Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant, coaches, and even some front office staff. All of them cheered on Looney as he autographed jersey number 5 to be put on permanent display. Looney is a 2014 graduate of Hamilton and was a star player in his high school days. While at Hamilton, Looney

was named Mr. Basketball by the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association and won Gatorade Player of the Year in 2014. His senior year, he averaged 27.9 points, 12.7 rebounds, 8 blocks and 7 assists per game. Looney was drafted by the Golden State Warriors in 2015. He played college basketball for UCLA for one year before making the leap to the NBA. Known for his natural talent, Looney spent time with the Hamilton basketball teams, cheerleaders, and stu-

dents, sharing stories about his career journey. Looney has also gained a reputation for charitable causes and for giving back to others. “We are incredibly proud of the player and role model that Kevon has become,” said MPS Superintendent Dr. Keith P. Posley. “Kevon is an example of how hard work can lead to success, and we are so pleased that he has returned to his alma mater. He is always welcome to return to his home in Milwaukee Public Schools.”

Five reasons you may be low on energy

Long days at work combined with trying to maintain a social life or family time can require much more energy than you know. Having consistent energy to do your daily activities is always the goal, but it may not always be the reality for you. If your energy is consistently on ‘E’, check out the following things that may be stealing your energy and how you can snatch it back. 1. You aren’t eating enough protein Whether you’re a bodybuilder, or an accountant sitting at your desk all day, you need adequate amounts of protein to support your body and your energy levels. People who feel extra tired in the afternoon may feel that way due to skipping out on their protein. Protein helps to slow down your body’s rate of absorption of sugar, which if absorbed too quickly, can cause that dreaded midday crash. If you want to have sustained levels of energy all day long without downing multiple cups of coffee, Red Bulls, or other caffeinated drinks, you should do a makeover of your breakfast and lunch. Look to balance your portions of protein and carbs in the same meal so you get the immediate energy of the carbs, with the sustaining power from protein. A perfect breakfast, for example, would be a cup of Greek yogurt (protein) with a cup of berries (carbs). And for lunch, you can have 1 serving of lean protein like chicken, with veggies and quinoa (carbs). These meals have the double power to boost your energy levels like making it last over time, rather than spike super high and crash to rock bottom around 2 o’clock. 2. You don’t exercise often enough You likely already know that exercise has tons of benefits, from helping you grow stronger, improve your endurance, your breathing, your sleep, and much more. But this piece of news may seem unnatural: you need to exercise regularly to preserve your energy levels throughout the day. Even though some exercises can wear you out at the moment, getting in regular movement is essen-

tial to feeling energized from sun up to sun down. If you have noticed a slump in your energy during the day, try to move for 5 or 10 minutes during the day to get an immediate bolt of energy. This is the perfect trick to increase your energy before you go into a long marathon meeting, or when you have to pay attention to a never-ending conference call. But for everyday energy that helps you avoid the midday crash, aim to move for 30 minutes a day doing your favorite activity that gets your heart pumping. You can walk, you can dance, you can clean the house, you can run, you can jump on a trampoline, whatever floats your boat! Even after a day or two, you should notice an immediate change in your energy levels. And if you feel more fatigued after you increase your exercise, then check out the next energy zapper that may be the cure. 3. You aren’t adequately hydrated If you do exercise regularly, but you still notice your energy levels aren’t budging, you may need to take a look at your water bottle, if you can even find it. Whether you sit at a desk all day or run 5Ks every morning, you need a sufficient supply of water to maintain your energy. When you start to get dehydrated, your body starts to suffer and sends you big obvious signals, like low energy levels, drowsiness, headaches, and overtime, physical pain from your thirsty kidneys. The first step to hydrating properly is to take a look at your urine. If it’s a dark yellow color, you need more water and lots of it. If it’s clear or light yellow, you’re ok. If you’re generally hydrated, but notice slumps in energy after your workout, focus on drinking plenty of water before, during, and after your workout so that you can replenish the H20 you may lose through your sweat. 4. You’re eating or drinking too much sugar and caffeine Sugar and caffeine can give you an immediate boost in energy, but that boost comes (Continued pg. 13)

Black Thursday remembered: 50 years later By: Jerry Benston, Jr. Vice President Critical Measures, LLC (UWO graduate/former faculty member) On Thursday November 21, 1968, 94 Black students at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh made the conscious decision to put their college careers on the line and participate in a demonstration for social justice aimed at improving diversity and a more inclusive campus environment. The demonstration resulted in all 94 students being arrested, jailed and expelled from the university. On November 14, 2018, the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh reflected on and rededicate itself to lessons learned at that point 50 years ago known as “Black Thursday”. The campus commemorated the 50th anniversary of Black Thursday by recognizing this historical event and presenting a program to reflect upon the sacrifices and activism made by those 94 Black students to improve diversity and inclusion on the campus. The program started with a meeting with Chancellor Andrew Leavitt followed by a reception. The program

The opportunity to showcase leadership’s demonstrated commitment to a respectful and safe learning environment will be a watchful expectation. Unfortunately, today under the auspices of higher education, college campuses are the third most frequent sites of hate crimes. American institutions of higher learning are experiencing the demographic changes that are rapidly changing the face of America. The focus of every university’s “business” is to prepare students for the world of work in an increasingly global economy. Its students are becoming more diverse – racially, culturally, linguistically, religiously, and economically. Many of them are older, have families or are re-

If true, this new research suggests that our biases are infinitely more dangerous than we ever imagined them to be – operating like computer viruses that can get beyond our best intellectual firewalls and capable of creating tremendous interpersonal damage – without conscious intent. The attainment of academic degrees does not exempt the phenomenon of unconscious bias. Studies on student and faculty relationships suggest that “faculty have the greatest influencing impact on students because they set the intellectual and behavioral norms for the institution”. If we buy the fact that faculty may have biases that negatively impact student success, then a proactive intervention to educate faculty on their own unconscious biases and how to manage them would appear to be a logical and appropriate step for development in academic leadership.
