Northwest Family Center hosts '4th Annual Mrs. O'Bee's Toy House'

On Sunday, December 10, 2017, Northwest Family Activity and Events Center, 4104 W. Good Hope Road, hosted its 4th Annual Mrs. O'Bee's Toy House. The event was open to children (2 - 10 years old) and their families. Children were able to pick out one free toy, take a photo with Santa, and enjoy special Christmas treats provided by friends of the late Mrs. Ernestine O'Bee, one of the founders of Northwest Funeral Chapel. All toys that were left over were donated to the Salvation Army, House of Peace, and the Daily Bread. The event center is open to the public to host special events. For more information, please call 414-540-9630 or 414-462-6020. Pictured at the event are Northwest Funeral Chapel Corporate Officer J.C. Frazier and his wife Victoria; staff members of Northwest Funeral Chapel; and Santa and Mrs. Claus(center).

'We Got This' hosts 4th annual 500 Black Tuxedos event

On December 9, 2017, Andre Lee Ellis' (center) "We Got This" program hosted the annual 500 Black Tuxedos Event. The purpose of the event is to show our young men that "they can dress up their lives before they mess up their lives," said Ellis. More than 500 mentors registered and donated $75 so that 500 young men could rent a tuxedo and participate in a phenomenal day of planned activities, including dinner at the Pfister Hotel's Crystal Ballroom and the opportunity to

learn from the older mentors. "We strongly believe that it will be very rewarding for our mentors as well," said Ellis. The event gives these young men a chance to put on a tux and march in the streets of Milwaukee with pride. The experience helps to open up the youths' perspective of life. Other than the tuxedo rentals, all other expenses were covered by the donors. The tuxedo rental was generously provided by Torrence’s House of Threads, 4722 West Fond du Lac Ave.

Church Women United - Milwaukee Unit hosts Annual Christmas Tea On Wednesday, December 6, 2017, the Church Women United-Milwaukee Unit (CWU-MU) hosted its annual Christmas Tea at Apostle Presbyterian Church, 1509 South 76th Street. The event began with a program hosted by CWU-MU president Dr. Wilma Spann (right of center, in red dress) and included music from Lincoln Middle School's 7th Grade Orchestra. The event continued with the tea and the unveiling of gifts that were donated or bought with funds raised by the CWU-MU. The attendees also were able to meet with representatives from the local agencies that would be receiving the gifts including: Guadalupe Early Head Start, Sojourner Peace Center, Northcott Neighborhood House, Children's Hospital of Wisconsin's Community Center, Joy House, Safe Harbor, Boudicca House, Vet's Place Central, and Guest House of Milwaukee. www.milwaukeetimesnews.com

Being Frank

By: Frank James Special to the Milwaukee Times

Self-destruction “Self destruction, you're headed for self destruction.” Those words come from the rap song Self Destruction made in 1989. The song deals with the issues of drugs and murder in the African American community. The lyrics may seem dated but the message still holds true. The difference today is the drugs and the killers that are not the keys to destruction; we are. There are many issues in the USA today. The drugs are still prevalent in every level of society. Murder rates still are above average in major cities. These and other factors are still hanging around 30 years after Self Destruction was released. In order for anything to become a problem, people have to partake in the object or action. This means that drugs, murder, even sex would not be a problem if people did not participate. In a sense, what I am saying is we design our own destructive means. How could a drug like heroin become a problem in the early 1960’s, and still be one in 2017, if not for people? You can blame the drug dealer for selling heroin but what about the user? If people did not willingly decide

to try drugs, would there be a problem? The blame is on the person who started down the road to addiction. If I go down highway 94 heading east from Milwaukee, should I get mad because I wind up in Chicago? The blame for all issues in society resides in the mirror. Drugs may be hard for the average person to relate to. What about our life situations? Many people are not happy with the way their life is working out. They may be in jobs that they are unhappy doing. I know some people are born into better situations than others. If one looks back on the decisions made you will see a pattern that led you to where you are now. Your today is the direct result of decisions made yesterday. Many people are in prisons of their own making. We build barriers that shape who and what we are. In some instances these are minor picket fences. In other cases, people have reinforced concrete walls that soar into the heavens. These walls are built to protect people from emotional hurt. The problem is that a wall of protection often becomes a prison

you are unhappy with your love life or love interest? Is it Colonel Sanders' fault that you have gained 20 pounds in the wrong places? No. Our decisions have created our situation. To avoid total self destruction, we have to accept this fact. Our world is a beautiful place. No matter what society says, it is never too late to live and do what you want. It may be a steeper climb to get there but understanding why you are where you are will propel you greatly. Take control of the time you have on this planet. Do not waste your talent or time because of an unconscious penchant for self-destruction. Frank James IV © 2017 beingfrankwithfrank@ gmail.com

wall. We create a wall to hide behind and forget to break it down once the hurt leaves. The wall becomes a part of our personality and feeds the ego. These walls mixed with ego talk keep the true you from shining. These walls

are a major part of self destruction. We have to be able to understand that where we are in life is of our own making. Whose fault is it that you are not making the money you want? Whose fault is it that

MPS donates and packs lunches for homeless shelter Several dozen students and employees from MPS Central Services banded together this week to pack lunches for residents at the Guest House of Milwaukee. All of the bread, lunchmeat, cheese, fruit, and other lunch items were purchased though cash donations from MPS employees, which totaled nearly $600. Sandwiches were crafted by students in the Community Assessment Training

Program, who are learning career skills that will help them directly transition to the workforce after graduation. Employees assisted with packing and also wrote friendly notes to the residents who would receive the lunches.

MPS seeks donations for the 2017 Mitten Tree Drive Help MPS students keep warm this winter! For more than 10 years, MPS Central Services staff and the community have donated thousands of winter accessories for MPS students to ensure that their heads and hands are covered during the cold Wisconsin winters. From now through January 5, 2018, people can help keep MPS students warm this winter by donating new mittens, gloves, hats and scarves. Hand-made items in sizes for children and adults are welcome, also. Donations can be dropped off to MPS Central Services building Monday through Friday between 7:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. MPS is partnering with TCF Bank who will provide 10 collection sites for community members to drop-off donations in addition to the MPS Central Service Office. ers. You don't have to give up all of your holiday favorites if you make healthy choices and limit portion sizes. At a party or holiday gathering, follow these tips to avoid overeating and to choose healthy foods. • If you're at a buffet, fix your plate and move to another room away from the food, if possible. Choose smaller portions. • Choose low-calorie drinks such as sparkling water, unsweetened tea or diet beverages. If you choose to drink alcohol, limit the amount, and have it with food. Talk with your health care team about whether alcohol is safe for you. Limit it to one drink a day for women, two for men, and drink only with a meal. • Watch out for heavy holiday favorites such as hams with a honey glaze, turkey swimming in gravy and side dishes loaded with butter, sour cream, cheese, or mayonnaise. Instead, choose skinless turkey without gravy, or other lean meats. • Look for side dishes and vegetables that are light on

butter, dressing, and other extra fats and sugars, such as marshmallows or fried vegetable toppings. • Watch the salt. Some holiday dishes are made with prepared foods high in sodium. Choose fresh or frozen vegetables with no sauce to keep your sodium intake down. • Select fruit instead of pies, cakes and other desserts high in fat, cholesterol, and sugar. • Focus on friends, family, and activities instead of food. Take a walk after a meal, or join in the dancing at a party.

as fresh fruit and sliced raw vegetables. Pack dried fruit, nuts, and seeds as snacks. Since these foods can be high in calories, measure out small portions (¼ cup) in advance. • If you're driving, bring a few bottles of water instead of sweetened soda or juice. If you're flying, choose unsweetened beverages onboard. • If you're flying and don't want to walk through the metal detector with your insulin pump, tell a security officer that you're wearing an insulin pump and ask them to visually inspect the pump and do a full-body pat-down. • Place all diabetes supplies in carry-on luggage. Keep medications and snacks at your seat for easy access. Don't store them in overhead bins. • Have all syringes and insulin delivery systems (including vials of insulin) clearly marked with the pharmaceutical preprinted label that identifies the medications, in the original pharmacy labeled packaging. • If a meal will be served during your flight, call ahead for a diabetic, low fat, or low cholesterol meal. If the airline doesn't offer a meal, bring a nutritious meal yourself. Wait until your food is about to be served before you take your insulin. • When drawing up your dose of insulin, don't inject air into the bottle (the air on your plane will probably be pressurized). • Stick with your routine for staying active. Get at least 150 minutes of physical activity every week. Ten minutes at a time is fine.
