On Friday, December 9, 2016 Reid's New Golden Gate Funeral Home hosted its annual "Celebration of Love" at the Crowne Plaza, 6401 South 13th Street. Family members, friends, pastors and church leaders from Chicago, Racine and Milwaukee were in attendance to salute and celebrate the prominent couple in grand style. The evening affair featured an eight course buffet dinner, and an uplifting gospel message by Pastor Keith T. Evans of Greater Mt. Eagle Baptist Church in Racine WI, who acknowl-
edged the business support the Reids have received from the religious community. The Reids have three funeral home locations, two on Milwaukee's northwest side and a location in Racine. Milwaukee Urban League hosts 57th Annual Equal Opportunity Day Luncheon
On Wednesday, December 7, 2016 the Milwaukee Urban League hosted their 57th Annual Equal Opportunity Day Luncheon at the Pfister Hotel in Downtown Milwaukee. The Equal Opportunity Day Luncheon is the second largest fundraising event of the year for the Milwaukee Urban League. Each year the Urban League honors those who further the cause of the Urban League in the community and in the boardroom. This year's recipients included Generation Growth Capital, Inc. Founder and Managing Director Cory Nettles; WE Energies Vice President of Local Affairs Thelma Sias; Gorman & Company Chief Operating Officer Tom Capp; and former MillerCoors Director of Multicultural Relations Larry Waters. Northwest Family Center hosts 3rd Annual Mrs. O'Bee's Toy House

On Sunday, December 11, 2016, Northwest Family Activity and Events Center, 4104 W. Good Hope Road hosted its 3rd Annual Mrs. O'Bee's Toy House. The event was open to children (2 - 10 years old) and their families. Children were able to pick out one free toy, take a photo with Santa, and enjoy special Christmas treats provided by friends of Mrs. O'Bee. All toys that were left over were donated to the Salvation Army, House of Peace, and the Daily Bread. The event center is open to the public to host special events. To err is human By Guest Contributor State Senator Lena C. Taylor Within three years of being released, 30 percent of WI inmates will end up back behind bars. It’s called the Department of Corrections for a reason. When we incarcerate someone a second time, it means we failed. Crime doesn’t pay, it costs. We spend over $30,000 per prisoner every year. It’s a big reason why the department costs us $2.5 billion. Last June, I was appointed to the Recidivism Reduction Committee, a legislative study committee that brought fellow legislators and members of the public together to brainstorm solutions to reduce recidivism. Last week, we met as a group and approved more than a dozen recommendations. Here are just a few: • Medication supply after release: You can’t be expected to find a job if you’re not healthy. This recommendation ensures that inmate
patients are supplied with at least four-weeks of their prescription medication upon release. • Expanding Windows to Work: Windows to Work is a great program that helps incarcerated individuals transition back to society. • Trauma-infor med Care: In order to reform, we need to heal old wounds, not create new ones. With the DOCS, DHS, and DCF, we will work together to pilot a trauma-informed care program for incarcerated individuals. • Supporting the work of the Integrated Reentry & Employment Strategies: Several stakeholders are participating in one of the most exciting pilot projects to help those coming out of prison stay out while successfully transitioning back into society. • Council of State Government Justice Center’s Justice Reinvestment Initiative: I had the pleasure of working with the Justice
Senator Lena C. Taylor Center in 2009 and I’m looking forward to helping bring the industry’s leading expert at controlling rising prison costs by reducing recidivism back into Wisconsin to help our state get smart on crime, not just tough on crime. These are all valuable changes I will work to see made. In addition to the work we did through the committee, here is a sneak peek at just a few of my bills I plan to reintroduce in the
coming months: • Banning the box: You shouldn’t be defined by your crime. Banning the box that requires job applicants to disclose whether or not they’ve been convicted of a felony would ensure a level playing field for everyone. • Collateral consequences: I’m a former public defender, so believe me when I tell you that far too many people don’t know they will pay the price for their conviction for long after they are out of prison. One of the biggest barriers to reentry into society is that you can’t get professionally licensed for many industries for years and years after you’ve completed your sentence. •Expungement: Our law is broken when it comes to giving someone a chance to wipe the slate clean. Our law only allows you to be eligible for expungement if you committed the offense when you were under 25-years-old and request expungement at the time of sentencing. Ex-
pungement is not a guarantee, you have to earn it. Why would we limit those who could earn it? Now don’t get me wrong, I’m a "tough love" kind of woman. But, my heart goes out to people on their last leg because the deck is stacked against them. We have it in us to help others, and that’s exactly what we should do. Like the saying goes, “To err is human, to forgive is divine.” All of us are capable of making mistakes. We’re all capable of forgiveness, too. Award-winning news director to lead WISN 12 News Ben Hart to helm important local coverage throughout Southeastern Wisconsin
WISN 12 is pleased to announce that Ben Hart will lead the station’s news operation as its news director, following more than a decade of award-winning journalistic and managerial experience across the country. Prior to joining WISN 12 News, Hart served as news director at (Hearst-owned) WAPT in Jackson, MS for the past several years. Hart replaces Chris Gegg, who announced his departure from WISN earlier this month. “Ben is a smart and passionate journalist who dedicates himself to excellence, and in being an innovator,” says Jan Wade, president and general manager of WISN 12. “He focuses on winning every story through strong story-telling, editorial leadership, and interesting execution,” added Wade. Dear Santa, cure the fear The magical time of year is upon us again. Christmas is here, good people of the world. The Christmas trees, and holiday cheer have returned for a few weeks. Many children around the world write letters to Santa Claus about holiday wishes. Today we will adopt the tactic and hope Santa can come through for the USA. The gift we request from Santa is the removal of fear from the population.

The USA has their hand in every conflict in the world. This is because of the fear that has warped the mentality of the people. How many soldiers are stationed in hostile countries? The fear that sends these soldiers into hostile situations has to be cured, Santa.

A Love Kindness Christmas celebration Perhaps you wonder, as I sometimes do, why we make this season of celebration so stressful. Many will spend too much money and energy trying to find a perfect gift or shop for a bargain by standing in line at a shopping mall. Yet the reason for the celebration is the birth of Christ, who specifically told us not to worry. He also said that he wanted us to experience “complete joy.” Not just during this season but all year long. It is hard to be joyful when you are all stressed out and it goes against the message Jesus brings of God’s love for each of us. We are celebrating the “Good News for all people” and that definitely includes you and me. So after all the gifts have been opened and the food digested what will be remembered? How we treat each other is what defines every person and this is what is remembered. Think for a moment about who is the kindest person you know. What makes that person special to you? Our Love Kindness program is meant to help raise the importance of kindness in how we behave

Siefert Elementary read-a-thon gives students a glimpse of their futures
The ability to visualize success is a key element in reaching a goal – so Siefert Elementary found a way to blend that vision with a fun day of reading. Recently, 60 community leaders and neighbors filled classrooms with personal stories and career insights, then read books to children and engaged them in thought-provoking discussion. The goal was to open children’s minds to the joys of reading and to their unlimited potential through the event’s theme, "Comprehension and Conversations." Volunteer reader-mentors spent as long as an hour with students and talked about their professions, education, special training, and goals, then read books and led discussions with eager children. Mentors included former
Alderman Willie Wade, Milwaukee Bucks Vice President John Steinmiller, OnMilwaukee contributor Bobby Tanzilo, MPS district staff members, and Milwaukee police, fire fighters, and business leaders. Refreshments were sponsored by the Cream City Chapter of the national service organization The Links, Inc. Principal Wanda Varela-Katz was enthusiastic about the impact on students. “Our goal was to expose our young students to role models in their community who can motivate them to stay in school, go to college, and engage in productive careers to better our communities. Meeting successful neighbors sends a message to students that they can be successful, too.”

The North Division High School Alumni Association is seeking volunteers to tutor students in reading, science and math. Tutoring will take place after school from 4:00 - 5:30 p.m. Tutors are asked to commit at least one day per week from February through May. We need assistance from the community in order to help our students succeed. Changing the calendar to open more summer opportunities is the way to give all students more chances to learn. We at MPS heard your concerns about the proposed calendar. We have made changes that let us focus on students with the greatest academic needs in fall 2017. As suicide rates for Black children rise, protecting emotional health is vital
Dr. Rheeda Walker says hoping your child is okay isn’t an effective strategy to protect their emotional health. The researchers who found that suicide rates have doubled for Black children while declining for White children were surprised by their own results. These are the first recorded data in history for which Black suicide rates surpass that of other race groups. Suicide is what can happen at the extreme of when youth and adults are marginalized and lack the resources to cope with this marginalization. The reasons for the increase in Black children’s suicide are unknown. In today’s climate, however, efforts toward protecting children from the subtle and not-so-subtle burdens of discrimination and oppression seem warranted. I, personally, never anticipated that I would need my psychology Ph.D., my research in African American identity and emotional health, or my understanding of implicit bias and institutional oppression to navigate my child’s pre-kindergarten classroom. As it turns out, I need them all. The preschool to prison pipeline is real. While “educational” systems are not fatal in the traditional sense, they can engender low self-esteem that subsequently kills motivation along with academic and intellectual performance. What is less well known is that young, emerging adults who have a less than positive cultural identity and who internalize racism are also more prone to depression, anxiety, and thoughts of suicide.
Parents and other caregivers must protect Black children from subtle messaging that their lives don’t matter. Such messaging can be more detrimental than fractured limbs and bruised faces, as it’s hard to heal what one cannot see. Many biased teachers are well meaning and would never intentionally mistreat a child. The teachers themselves are from all backgrounds and races. Nevertheless, teachers are humans—educated and socialized in the same racialized system. The empirical and epidemiological data are overwhelming. Black children often are considered older and “less innocent” than their White peers. Relative to White girls, Black girls are more harshly disciplined in schools. Black preschoolers are twice as likely to be suspended from school as White preschoolers. Until these statistics change, parents must be increasingly cautious about the childcare and educational settings in which children are entrusted. Parents must question pat-
terns of suspicious or overly punitive disciplinary practice. It is difficult, if not impossible, to know when a child is being treated differently from other children if the parent is not in the classroom. However, there are usually “clues” available. Suspicious disciplinary practice might look like being called out/ formally reprimanded on the second day of kindergarten for age-appropriate behavior. Suspicious behavior might look like your child saying that the teacher cannot pronounce her name correctly, more than a month after the school year has begun. Suspicious behavior could look like school suspension for a 4-year-old. Note also that the suspicious behaviors do not occur in isolation. There are usually multiple, seemingly innocuous, incidents. It is important to be familiar with the school’s disci-
pline protocol. Teachers and administrators should use appropriately progressive, increasingly firm strategies to correct behavior. If a typically well-mannered child is suspended from school because the adults in charge are not using discipline protocol, this is problematic. Still, keep in mind that the teacher may not have any mal-intent toward your child. S/ he may be singling your child out because the child is perceived as having the capacity to “do better” given stricter expectations. Always, the first response should be to call a teacher conference to better understand the teacher’s perspective. If a second conference is warranted, express your concerns that your child’s interest in school could be impacted long-term if s/he suspects unfair treatment. In your teacher/principal conference, cite statistics regarding disproportionate punishment of Black youth and how zero-tolerance policies impact children’s longterm outcomes. I am writing as a researcher and scholar, well-versed in African American mental health, but I am also an African American mom who has experienced and heard far too many (common-place) stories of classroom mistreatment.
We want “the best" for our children, including the educational best. Sometimes that means putting sons and daughters in settings where they are “the only one.” At the same time, we cannot naively assume that educational advance supersedes psychological and emotional well-being. If a child is smart and well educated, but suffers emotional turmoil that prohibits him or her from reaching full potential, what has truly been accomplished? While many children are resilient, and you yourself may have survived a system that failed to reaffirm you, we can and must do better. Hoping that things will get better is not a strategy for protecting our children. Dr. Rheeda Walker is a tenured Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Houston (UH). She is an expert in African American adult mental health and suicide science and has authored/co-authored more than 30 peer-reviewed papers. Focus on credit factors, not credit scores You should want to know your credit score. After all, your credit can be incredibly important to your financial future. It could impact your likelihood of getting approved for a loan and the interest rate you'll get on new financial products. However, understanding the factors that influence your credit score can be even more important than knowing the score itself. There are five key factors that influence your credit scores. Fair Isaac Corporation's FICO credit scores are used for most lending decisions in the U.S., and the latest FICO base scoring model has a 300 to 850 range. The score depends on the information in a person's credit report, and the lower the score the more likely the person is to pay late. Past credit mistakes can stay on your reports for seven to 10 years. While the impact of negative marks diminishes over time, the credit-building process can be slow. However, just as a rising tide lifts all boats, improving your core credit factors could help raise all your scores over time.
Buying a holiday gift for a loved one? Here’s a peculiar holiday shopping tip: think ahead about the possibility of the gift being returned BEFORE you buy it. Seems like a strange idea, right? But if you consider that even the best presents get returned or exchanged sometimes (think issues with size, color, style, etc.), planning ahead can be a great help to a gift recipient. The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection asks shoppers to pay close attention to the different stores’ policies while they shop, to ask for gift receipts at the register and to keep
FICO shares the five key factors that you should focus on to build healthy credit and the approximate weighting of each. 1. Payment history – 35 percent. A history of on-time payments can help your credit, while late payments, collection accounts, bankruptcies or other negative payment-related items could hurt it. Some types of accounts, such as utility or mobile phone contracts, don't generally report positive activity (on-time payments) to credit bureaus. But if the account gets sent to collections, that could still hurt your credit. You might want to open an account that reports your payments to the credit bureaus if you don't already have one (you can call the issuer and ask). Some people start with a secured credit card or a credit-builder loan from a credit union, but consider what type of account best fits your situation. 2. Amounts owed – 30
percent. The amount you owe versus your available credit, known as your utilization rate, is another important factor. A lower utilization rate often leads to better credit. If you're able to pay down credit card debt, that could quickly improve your utilization rate. Increasing your cards' credit limits and keeping credit cards open even when you don't regularly use them could also help. 3. Length of credit history – 15 percent. FICO looks at the age of your oldest account, newest account and average age of all your accounts. A longer history is
usually better than a short one. Keeping accounts open, and ideally in good standing, can help you increase your length of credit history. Even when you close an account it will remain on your reports and count towards your credit history for seven to 10 years. 4. New credit – 10 percent. The new credit section considers how many new accounts you have, what types of accounts they are and recent inquiries into your credit. Hard inquiries generally occur when someone requests your credit report to make a lending decision or rental screening. A single inquiry will generally drop your score by a few points for several months, while multiple inquiries could have a larger negative impact. However, credit-scoring agencies let you shop for a loan without a penalty. Multiple hard inquiries for some types of loans, such as auto loans, could count as a sin-

all sales documentation organized and accessible throughout the holiday season. “Return and exchange policies vary from store to store, and can even vary within a store based on the type of product purchased,” said Frank Frassetto, Division Administrator for Trade and Consumer Protection. “Understanding a business’s policy and keeping receipts on file is the best way to ensure that you or your loved ones don’t face disappointment at the return counter if there is a problem with the gift.” Remember to keep your
receipts handy and to pick up a gift receipt at the time of purchase. Before you wrap the item, pack the gift receipt in the box or tape it to the front or side of the box to ensure that the recipient doesn’t overlook it. Some stores will not honor a

Soft inquiry, which can happen when you check your credit or a company pre-qualifies you for an offer, don't hurt your credit at all. Try not to open new accounts unless you need them and avoid new hard inquiries in the months leading up to applying for an important loan. 5. Credit mix –10 percent. Your experience with different types of credit, such as revolving credit and installment loans, could impact your score, particularly if there isn't a lot of information in your credit report. Having at least one credit card could help your credit mix, although that's not necessarily reason enough to apply for a card. Bottom line: Learn which factors matter the most to your credit scores, and try to make a habit of practicing credit-building behavior. Creating a system that'll help you make on-time payments and only using a small portion of your available credit are good starts.
