Milwaukee Urban League hosts Equal Opportunity Day Luncheon By Steve Waring Special to The Milwaukee Times

Pictured at the Equal Opportunity Day Luncheon are (from left) Milwaukee Urban League president and CEO Ralph Hollmon; Time Warner Cable director of human resources Toni Holland; Time Warner Cable Unity Award recipient and Quarles & Brady chairman emeritus Attorney John W. Daniels, Jr.; and Milwaukee Urban League board chairman Simon Davis.

Milwaukee Bucks President Peter Feigin was the luncheon keynote speaker and promised to help with an economic revival of Bronzeville, the neighborhood near where the new Bucks Arena is to be built. The 56th Equal Opportunity Day Luncheon, held on December 9th at the Pfister Hotel, shattered previous attendance records where more than 450 guests attended the annual Milwaukee Urban League event. The Equal Opportunity Day Luncheon is the second largest fundraising event of the year for the Milwaukee Urban League. Each year the luncheon awards a Corporate Leadership Award and the Time Warner Cable Unity Award

to those who help make Milwaukee a better place to live. U.S. Bank Executive Vice President Steve SaLoutos accepted the Corporate Leadership Award on behalf of U.S. Bank. He noted that the bank has a policy whereby employees can request up to 16 hours of paid time off from work per year in order to work as a volunteer on community projects. In his acceptance speech, SaLoutos said U.S. Bank was committed to building a rising middle class with pride and independence in their work in the areas of Milwaukee that are currently suffering from high rates of homelessness, crime, unemployment, and lack of access to health care and retail shopping. Sargento hosts Touchdowns for Charity Tailgate Party By Steve Waring Special to The Milwaukee Times On December 3, 2015 Packers tight end Richard Rodgers caught a desperate, last-second, 65-yard pass in the Detroit Lions end zone to win the game with no time left on the clock. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers threw the ball so high that it almost hit the roof of Ford Field. After the game Aaron Rodgers (no relation) said that aside from winning the Super Bowl, it was the most exciting play of his career. Richard Rodger, now in his second season with the Packers, has been steadily improving into a potential Pro Bowl player, accounting for seven receiving touchdowns so far this season. During the regular season players usually receive just www.milwaukeetimesnews.com

one day a week off from workouts. This week Rodgers spent his day off signing autographs and enjoying a traditional Packers tailgate party with a capacity crowd of more than 300 volunteers and friends of the Hunger Task Force as part of the 13th annual Sargento Touchdowns for Charity Tailgate Party. For every touchdown the Packers score during the regular season, Sargento Foods donates $1,000 to the Hunger Task Force. With three regular season games remaining the Packers have scored 37 touchdowns and Rodgers delivered a check Photos By Steve Waring for $39,000. youth development programs throughout the city. The Milwaukee Urban League was founded in 1919 as an affiliate of the National Urban League which was founded in New York City in 1910. Through its education, employment and economic development programs, the Milwaukee Urban League helps people become more self-reliant so they can improve the quality of their lives.

The National Urban League was founded to assist African Americans who were moving from the rural south to urban cities in the north, and is the nation’s oldest and largest community based movement devoted to empowering African Americans to enter the economic and social mainstream. Currently there are more than 100 affiliates in 34 states and the District of Columbia.

Rebuilding Our Community

By Dr. Andrew Calhoun, Ed.D. Special to the Milwaukee Times

Home for the holidays The celebration of Christmas is by far the greatest holiday time in America. No other holiday gets as much attention in terms of time, ads, celebrations, parties, gifts and sales. It is as much a part of our way of life and culture that it is hard to separate it from other things that are happening at the same time. It is also a time for the kids who are away at college or those sailors and soldiers who are deployed to come home. It is a great time of the year in which to be thankful and spend some quality time with family and friends. Besides being the greatest holiday time, Christmas also has the most symbols that reflect this time of the year. Each symbol has meaning and history as to why it is associated with Christmas.

And you can see them everywhere. Some of the most notable symbols include the Christmas tree, holly branches, wreaths, candy canes, snowmen, reindeer, Santa Claus, chestnuts, holiday parades, seasonal music and songs. When you add in the faith community, there are even more symbols, including the lighting of candles, special reading of scriptures

cheese, greens, rolls and corn bread, and of course this is just my short list. The other thrill is the shopping for gifts for family and friends. There are tons of sales everywhere and there seems to be no shortage of items to choose from. But Christmas is much more than the symbols we use, the foods we eat and the shopping we do. Christmas is about hope, love, joy and peace. And believe me; we need a lot of each one. It is about finding the real meaning of coming of Christ into the world for such a time as this. It’s a time to remember our blessings, help those who are less fortunate than we are and to find a way to help make our society better. It is also a time to get together with family and friends, share the values of what we have in

about the birth of Christ, the wise men from the east, shepherds in the fields, birth in a manger, angels, and special worship services to commemorate the occasion. Let’s not forget some of the thrills of this holiday that include the foods for meals and leftovers. The food includes ham, turkey, pork chops, eggnog, coconut cake, sweet potato pie, mac and

icans are the face people see when they think of drug dealers. Drugs have ravaged and tainted the next five generations of African Americans. When does it stop? African Americans have to look at cases like Armus’ and become wiser. Many people blame the penal and judicial system for the misery in the African American community. The only way those two systems can affect you is if you place yourself at their mercy. African Americans know that the law is biased, so why do they keep putting themselves in its hands? There are few African Americans who will get the Armus treatment in court.

There is one major lesson to be learned. African Americans are, and always will be the patsies in the American penal system. African Americans are the image people think of when they hear the word prison. African Amer-

This is just the plain truth. The question facing African Americans is simple. African Americans, are you going to continue to lose or stop playing the game? Santa may just give you a gift if you wise up. Armus basically got off for a charge that would have had an African American doing at least five years. The only way an African American would get five years for that charge is if they turned in the head of a drug cartel. There are several lessons to be learned from this one case. One is if you are going to inform then you shouldn’t go to jail. Armus’ case shows this in plain black and white. African Americans rarely get off scott free no matter what evidence they give to authorities. I’m not saying there are not cases where an African American has turned state's evidence and gone free. I’m saying these cases are rare and extremely rare with African American males. Everyone has heard the stories of some poor fool caught with five or ten rocks getting a heavy dose of time. Armus was planning on moving pounds of crack, not powder. I’ll let that digest for a while.

'Twas a few weeks before Christmas and in Wisconsin a Doctor was about to go to prison. The Doctor had been convicted of conspiracy to distribute cocaine in Southeastern Wisconsin. Conspiracy to distribute can be punished with 10 years to life. To avoid this the doctor turned informant, got a few hours and time served while on supervision. Santa winked at the doctor and grinned because in this country jail time is for those who are black, not white. The previous paragraph may seem a bit comical but it is true. In 2011 Steven Armus plead guilty to conspiracy to distribute over 10 pounds of crack cocaine. This charge carries a 10-to-life sentence by itself. Armus also had a possession with intent to deliver charge under his belt. Well, a Christmas miracle happened and Armus only did a few hours in jail. Armus turned informant and was given time served while on supervision and basically that was it. Armus did have to sell his business and lose his license to practice medicine for two years but he is a free man. I am not a hater so I give kudos to Armus for getting off. Armus is valuable to the community as a lesson to the poor. For decades people have always felt African Americans received harsher penalties for drug offenses.

Help, O Lord, for the godly are fast disappearing! The faithful have vanished from the earth! Neighbors lie to each other, speaking with flattering lips and deceitful hearts. May the Lord cut off their flattering lips and silence their boastful tongues. They say, “We will lie to our hearts’ content. Our lips are our own— who can stop us?” The Lord replies, “I have seen violence done to the helpless, and I have heard the groans of the poor. Now I will rise up to rescue them, as they have longed for me to do.” The Lord’s promises are pure, like silver refined in a furnace, purified seven times over. Therefore, Lord, we know you will protect the oppressed, preserving them forever from this lying generation, even though the wicked strut about, and evil is praised throughout the land. - Psalm 12 Holy Bible, New Living Translation

We Got This presents: 500 Black Tuxedos On Saturday, December 12, 2015, We Got This Milwaukee presented their 500 Black Tuxedos event. About 500 mentors, young men and boys arrived at Northcott Neighborhood House, 2460 North 6th Street, to prep and donned black tuxedos, and then toured the Milwaukee Art Museum. They then gathered in Cathedral Square for a parade down to Chic Cafe, 770 North Jefferson Street where the men gathered for a luncheon program; to share some one-on-one time; and get a bit of coaching in etiquette. The event was founded by actor, playwright and producer Andre Lee Ellis, who devotes considerable time helping to produce young men with purpose and goals on their minds through his "We Got This" grassroots mentoring program.

Riverside students to serve at community meal program State Farm grant supports youth-led actions to address pressing community needs

Milwaukee Public Schools’ Riverside University High School has been named a State Farm® Good Neighbor Innovation School for the 2015-16 school year. The award includes a $5,000 grant from State Farm® to support service-learning experiences that expand student understanding of the impacts of poverty on individuals and communities and that equip students to take action to address poverty-related issues. "Youth Service America selected Good Neighbor Innovation Schools on behalf of State Farm because these school administrators create a culture of meaningful learning through service in their schools,” said State Farm Public Affairs Specialist Kelly Savage. “Congratulations to Riverside for successfully engaging students

in a variety of innovative strategies.” Riverside’s grant-supported service-learning experiences are being incorporated across a number of courses within the school. Students are studying the connections between poverty and homelessness, hunger and nutrition, mental and physical health, domestic violence, and incarceration, among other things. On December 14, students in Mr. Goldstein’s Sociology course took action by volunteering at The Gathering, a community meal program located at St. James Episcopal Church serving people experiencing homelessness. Other service-learning experiences underway include the following: Students in Ms. Wiest’s Fiber and Fabrics class discussed fabric in the context

mass incarceration and how it connects to poverty. They are also researching effective alternatives to incarceration and plan to share those strategies with state legislators. Students are also planning an all-school food drive. “Riverside University High School students have always committed themselves to working and serving toward the common good,” Principal Michael Harris said.

Students volunteering at The Gathering. of weather elements and keeping warm and dry. As a result of those discussions they are creating scarves, mittens, and rain ponchos from protective materials to share with people experiencing homelessness. Ninth grade students in Mr. Zettel’s afterschool fitness program are learning

and practicing strategies to reduce risk for mental and physical health issues exacerbated by poverty. Next steps will be to share those strategies with target audiences.

“These service-learning opportunities are one more way to bring awareness and change to our community in which we all serve. I continue to be proud of the work staff and students are doing Students in Mr. Wild’s and and look forward to the end Mr. Dean’s Multicultural/ result in caring for our popuEthnic Literature and His- lation in need.” tory courses are studying

MPS Legal Notice More than 3,400 MPS students received free books to start their own home libraries and build their reading skills thanks to My Very Own Library (MVOL), a literacy initiative dedicated to putting books into the hands of children in need. Milwaukee is one of six communities selected to take part in the MVOL program, which is supported by the Feeley Family Foundation, Scholastic Book Fairs, Milwaukee Public Schools and the United Way of Greater Milwaukee & Waukesha County. United Way and MPS have partnered to match the $250,000 grant award, dollar for dollar. Throughout this school year, the My Very Own Library program will distribute 34,200 books to students in 10 MPS schools. Participating students in the chosen schools will have the opportunity to select ten new children’s books over the course of three book fairs to create their own home library. These updates, which are designed to improve access and functionality of the space, will replace outdated, and increasingly incompatible, technologies that span 60 years - from the 1950s through the end of the 20th Century - with modern, more efficient equipment. While these rooms are unavailable, meetings of the Milwaukee Board of School Directors and its committees temporarily will be moved to the auditorium of MPS’s Neeskara School, located at 1601 N. Hawley Road, less than a half mile from MPS Central Services. Affected meetings include (dates and times are subject to change): • Board of School Directors Retreat to discuss enrollment trends, November 11, 2015, 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. • Committee on Parent and Community Engagement (PACE) – November 12, 2015, 5:30 p.m.; December 10, 2015, 5:30 p.m. • Committee on Student Achievement and School Innovation (SASI) – November 12, 2015, 6:30 p.m.; December 10, 2015, 6:30 p.m. • Committee on Accountability, Finance, and Personnel (AFP) – November 17, 2015, 6:30 p.m.; December 15, 2015, 6:30 p.m. • Regular Monthly Board Meeting – November 19, 2015, 6:30 p.m.; December 17, 2015, 6:30 p.m. As usual, the public will continue to have the opportunity at the committee meetings to comment on issues being considered by the Board of School Directors. “Kyle’s Story” Last year, Kyle’s world was spinning. In a matter of months he lost his job and was facing homelessness. Suddenly, Kyle was in desperate need of a place to stay for him, his 4-year-old daughter Kylie and 6-yearold son Cameron. “I was living in Chicago with the kids, then I lost my job, so I moved to Milwaukee to live with my sister, then she ended up losing her house,” Kyle said. Last year, the city of Milwaukee counted 1,224 individuals and families experiencing homelessness. Of that total, 390 (32%) were in an emergency shelter and 115 (9%) were unsheltered. The top reasons for homelessness were: lost job (49%), housing costs too high (34%), relationship/family breakup or death (33%) and eviction (29%). Thanks to three United Way-funded partners, Kyle quickly received the help he

needed. First, he contacted the United Way-funded 2-11 Coordinated Entry (CE) system. CE helps individuals and families experiencing homelessness or potential homelessness by connecting them with organizations providing housing services. 2-11 staff connected Kyle to YWCA’s Transitional Housing program (another United Way program partner), which provided him with temporary housing and supportive services, including work and life management education, parenting skills and therapy sessions for his children. “My stress level started to go down and, in turn, so did my kids’ stress. They no longer had to worry about where they were moving next. They were free to be themselves,” Kyle said. Once Kyle completed the YWCA Transitional Housing program, he was referred to a case manager with a third United Way-funded pro-

What to say to friends and family going through holiday depression

When people we love are going through depression, it’s serious. And during the holidays, this disorder can be intensified. “I see a surge of people feeling more depressed and anxious at this time of year,” said Asha Tarry, New York-based counselor and CEO of Behavioral Health Consulting Services LMSW, PLLC. “The levels of anxiety are higher and the cycles of depression are more common. As we experience less sunlight or reminders of loss of loved ones, finances, etc., people tend to become more depressed during the holidays, or experience more of ‘the blues’.” Writer and motivational speaker Richard Taylor suffered from depression and suicidal behavior for 12 years. During that time, the holidays further fueled his condition. “I always associated my value with what I could provide for family during the holidays with my success,” Taylor said. “As a college student and a young entrepreneur, I felt like a failure when I showed up empty handed or with nothing to bring during the holidays. I could be around all the people I loved and still feel lonely because I didn’t seem myself worthy of being around.” There are ways to support your loved ones, but putting them down isn’t one of them. Thursday, December1 7: The liturgical calendar of the Episcopal Church (USA) remembers Maria W. Stewart (1803-1880) and William Lloyd Garrison (1805-1879) on this day. Garrison, a prominent New England abolitionist, social reformer, journalist and newspaper owner, republished four speeches Maria Stewart had given on women’s rights, anti-racism in the North and calling for abolition of slavery in the South. After the speeches were published she wrote a regular column for Garrison’s newspaper, The Liberator. She was the first American woman of any race to speak to a mixed audience of men, women, whites and blacks. Before she began her public speaking and writing career in 1831, the executors of her late husband’s estate deprived her of her inheritance. Friday, December 18: The 13th Amendment, outlawing slavery in the U.S., was ratified in 1865. Passage of an Amendment to the U.S. Constitution requires approval of the President, Congress and at least two-thirds of all state legislatures. Saturday, December 19: Charles Randolph Uncles became the first African American seminarian to be ordained a Roman Catholic priest in 1891.Formerly a parishioner of St. Francis Xavier, Baltimore, celebrated his first Mass on Christmas Day at St. Francis Xavier. Sunday, December 20: About a month after the election of President Abraham Lincoln in 1860, the state legislature of South Carolina voted to secede from the Union, a decision which would lead to the Civil War. Monday, December 21: Although its origins are unknown, Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr. publicly uses the term African American in front of a national audience in 1988. As a phrase to distinguish those whose are descended from enslaved Africans it has grown increasingly part of the mainstream American version of the English language. Tuesday, December 22: Arthur W. Mitchell is born in 1883. In 1934, he became the first black Democrat elected to Congress. He represented Illinois in the House of Representatives for three terms. In Congress he introduced anti-lynching bills. After he was ordered to a segregated car when the train he was traveling on crossed into Arkansas, he succeeded before the U.S. Supreme Court in a victory for federal oversight of interstate travel in 1941, the same year he voluntarily chose not to run for reelection. Holiday depression (Continued from pg. 12) there are a number of different depressive disorders, ranging in severity and length of time. Don’t say: “You just need to relax and pray about it.” Instead say: “We can do whatever we need to for you to get better.” Those you love need to know that they can confide in you without judgment and they may be already nervous to share their feelings with you. A survey by Mental Health America showed that 63 percent of Black responwww.milwaukeetimesnews.com

If faith without works is truly dead, then shouldn’t I be getting help to seek out a therapist or counselor?” Don’t say: “You’re acting crazy.” Instead, say: “You are not going crazy. Thank you for being open.” People who are suffering from depression are not crazy. They are simply a part of the 8 percent of U.S. adults who are suffering. But, neg-

According to the same Mental Health America survey, 56 percent of African Americans thought that being depressed was a “normal” part of growing older. “The ideology that this is just a battle that only White people dealt with really got under my skin,” Taylor said. “Hearing that made me feel like I was the black sheep in the Black community. I was not only ashamed but also mad at myself for the illness I was dealing with thinking I’m the only Black person depressed.”
