Grammy-winning ‘song stylist’ Nancy Wilson dead at 81 Nancy Wilson, the Grammy-winning “song stylist” and torch singer whose polished pop-jazz vocals made her a platinum artist and top concert performer, has died. Wilson, who retired from touring in 2011, died Decemebr 13, 2018 after a long illness at her home in Pioneertown, a California desert community near Joshua Tree National Park, her manager and publicist Devra Hall Levy told The Associated Press. She was 81. Born in Chillicothe, Ohio, the eldest of six children of an iron foundry worker and a maid, Wilson sang in church as a girl and by age 4 had decided on her profession. She was in high school when she won a talent contest sponsored by a local TV station and was given her own program. After briefly attending Central State College, she toured Ohio with the Rusty Bryant’s Carolyn Club Big Band and met such jazz artists as Cannonball Adderley, who encouraged her to move to New York. She soon had a regular gig at The Blue Morocco, and got in touch with Adderley’s manager, John Levy. “He set up a session to record a demo,” Wilson later observed during an interview for the Los Angeles Philharmonic. “Ray Bryant and I went in and recorded ‘Guess Who I Saw Today,’ ‘Sometimes I’m Happy,’ and two other songs. We sent them to Capitol and within five days the phone rang. Within six weeks I had all the things I wanted.” Her first album, “Like in

Nancy Wilson Love!”, came out in 1959, and she had her greatest commercial success over the following decade despite contending at times with the latest sounds. Gamely, she covered Beatles songs (“And I Love Her” became “And I Love Him”), Stevie Wonder’s “Uptight (Everything’s Alright)” and “Son of a Preacher Man,” on which she strained to mimic Aretha Franklin’s fiery gospel style. She was so outside the contemporary music scene an interviewer once stumped her by asking about Cream, the million-selling rock trio featuring Eric Clapton. “It took me years to know what that question was about. Remember, I was constantly working or I was traveling to perform. The ’60s for me were about work,” she told JazzWax in 2010. In the 1970s and after, she continued to record regularly and perform worldwide, at home in nightclubs, concert halls and open-air settings, singing at jazz festivals from Newport to Tokyo. She of-

ficially stopped touring with a show at Ohio University in September 2011, but had been thinking of stepping back for years. When she turned 70, in 2007, she was guest of honor at a Carnegie Hall gala. The show ended with Wilson performing such favorites as “Never, Never Will I Marry,” ″I Can’t Make You Love Me” and the Gershwin classic “How Long Has This Been Going On?” “After 55 years of doing what I do professionally, I have a right to ask how long? I’m trying to retire, people,” she said with a laugh before leaving the stage to a standing ovation. In accordance with Wilson’s wishes, there will be no funeral service, a family statement said. A celebration of her life will be held most likely in February, the month of her birth. She is survived by her son, Kacy Dennis; daughters Samantha Burton and Sheryl Burton; sisters Karen Davis and Brenda Vann and five grandchildren.

What Obamacare ruling could mean for your health care

A federal judge’s ruling late Friday, December 14, 2018, striking down the Affordable Care Act (ACA) in its entirety has stoked anxiety among millions of Americans who rely on subsidized health insurance and millions more who have pre-existing conditions. Even if you don’t have an Obamacare health plan, experts say there are far-reaching implications for all consumers if the decision is allowed to stand. Here’s what you need to know: What does the federal court ruling mean? Federal Judge Reed O'Connor of the Northern District of Texas declared the individual mandate of the Affordable Care Act unconstitutional and, as a result, the entire law invalid. If the decision stands, it would wipe out all aspects of Obamacare, including protections for pre-existing conditions, preventive benefits coverage in all plans, mandate that children can remain on their parents’ plans up to age 26, expansion of Medicaid, premium subsidies and efforts to phase out the prescription drug donut hole in Medicare.

O’Connor issued a stay on his decision – meaning, it will not immediately take effect – while supporters of the ACA appeal the ruling to higher courts. Didn’t the Supreme Court already uphold Obamacare in 2012? Yes. In 2012, the Supreme Court reasoned that while government cannot order citizens to buy something, Obamacare’s "shared-responsibility payment" (a.k.a. penalty) for not having an insurance plan effectively amounts to a tax, which is an acceptable government practice. Last year, however, congressional Republicans – unsuccessful in their bid to repeal and replace Obamacare – moved to eliminate the individual mandate in effect. The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 reduced the shared-responsibility payment to zero, effective January 1, 2019. In other words, the government will no longer financially penalize, or tax, people who don’t buy insurance. Judge O’Connor reasoned that because the individual mandate will no longer collect revenue, it is no longer considered a tax. He con-

cluded it is “impermissible under the Interstate Commerce Clause—meaning the Individual Mandate is unconstitutional. Does the ruling mean people will immediately lose benefits? No. Because Judge O’Connor stayed his decision, nothing will change immediately as appeals proceed. If you have an Obamacare plan, it remains valid and any premium subsidy received will continue. Insurers are still forbidden from denying coverage or charging higher premiums for people with pre-existing conditions. All insurance plans are still required to provide a basic standard of benefits without lifetime caps as the law states. What happens next? A group of Democratic state attorneys general led by California plans to appeal the decision to the 5th Circuit US Court of Appeals in New Orleans. That process is expected to take several

months. Ultimately the case is expected to land at the US Supreme Court within the next couple of years. What is Plan B if the entire law is struck down? It's up to Congress to enact an Obamacare alternative if the courts strike down the ACA, and we've seen the gridlock on that front. There is not currently a viable alternative to the law that can pass the House and Senate and get signed into law by President Trump. Republicans were unsuccessful at repealing and replacing the law in 2017 when they controlled both chambers and the White House. While President Trump has promised to protect Americans who have relied on Obamacare insurance subsidies and pre-existing conditions protections, the administration has not said how it would respond to a decision striking down the law. How disruptive will it be if the courts abruptly eliminate Obamacare? Industry groups and independent health care analysts say wiping out Obamacare without an alternative would mean a highly disruptive shift in the health care of millions

of Americans. The Affordable Care Act has sharply reduced the number of uninsured Americans since 2010, covering 20 million more people than if the law had not taken effect, according to the nonpartisan Kaiser Family Foundation. An estimated 52 million Americans have pre-existing health conditions that insurers could've denied coverage to under pre-ACA rules in most states, the Foundation said. If millions were to lose insurance coverage at once, the costs for all consumers could skyrocket, said Kaiser health care analyst Larry Leavitt. “If this Texas decision on the ACA is upheld, it would throw the individual insurance market and the whole health care system into complete chaos,” Leavitt posted on Twitter. “Maybe less obvious are the implications of the Texas ACA decision on the health care industry,” he said. “More uncompensated care with more uninsured; completely upending Medicare payment systems changed by the ACA; repeal of tax increases that funded the ACA; no more employer mandate.”

the wheel in the direction opposite to the car’s sliding direction. This should be done cautiously, as too much countersteering can have dangerous results. If you can manage it, try not to get on the roads until after plows and sanding trucks have cleared the roads. In icy, stormy weather, be sure to keep your lights on and your windshield clean for visibility purposes. Even if you follow these tips, there is still a chance that you could get into an accident that is outside of your control. Typically, the fault lies with the driver who collided with the rear of the car in front of it, but sometimes certain circumstances can result in the driver of the front car taking some of the responsibility. If you do find yourself victim of a rear-end accident, start protecting your rights at the scene by contacting the appropriate authorities, taking pictures of any damage and gathering important information from all parties involved. If you or a loved one has been injured after an accident, contact the expert attorneys at Hupy and Abraham, S.C., by calling 1-800-800-5678 or by visiting www.hupy.com.

Here in Milwaukee, the arrival of cold weather also brings the opportunity for snow and ice. We must be cautious while on the roads all of the time, but especially during winter as icy roads can increase the likelihood of a vehicle losing control. Keep these tips in mind to make your trek on icy paths a bit safer: • Steering. When driving on ice, hold the steering wheel with a 9 and 3 grip. It is important to remember that it is easy to oversteer while driving on ice. It is natural to think that the more the wheel turns, the more the car will turn -- as on asphalt. On ice, this is not the case and can cause the situation to become much worse. • Braking. Many people believe that brakes should be pumped when braking on ice. This is no longer true with vehicles that are equipped with anti-lock braking systems (ABS). You should apply maximum brake pressure and let the ABS go to work. • Countersteering. Maintaining or trying to regain control after losing traction on ice can be very difficult. If the vehicle loses control, you should turn

Tricklebee Café offers volunteer opportunity for woman with Down syndrome Volunteer Nealy Rothe proudly wears her orange Tricklebee Café T-shirt as she serves meals, folds napkins and takes orders from customers. Rothe, a young woman with Down syndrome, began volunteering in the café at 4424 W. North Ave., after finding the opportunity on her church’s website. “I like learning how to do things in the kitchen like cooking and dishes and waitressing, and I just do a variety of things,” Rothe explained. She sees her volunteer work as “an introduction to give me some experience in the kitchen area. It’s like job training. They teach you how to set a table, serve food and drinks, and wait on people. My favorite thing is taking

orders because I get to write it down.” Rothe is a member of My Choice Family Care, an organization that works with adults with disabilities and with seniors to help them become independent in their communities. To help members achieve independence, My Choice may work with them to find a volunteer role or a job, assist with job training and help coordinate transportation. Rothe, who enjoys volunteering, says she definitely would recommend it to other My Choice members, and suggests they go online to find opportunities. Rothe’s mother, Jeanne Fehr, says her daughter is very enthusiastic about working at Tricklebee Café. “Nealy loves to volunteer,”

she said. “It’s really been good for her, exposing her to healthy food. She’s learning about all kinds of vegetables she never knew about, and volunteering provides her with the opportunity to do different tasks.” Fehr added: “She’s in her own independent supportive living apartment, so food prep is one of the goals for her to learn, and she sometimes gets the opportunity to do that. It’s also good because she’s interacting with various people and it’s a worthy cause. She seems to enjoy it a lot.” A dedicated volunteer The Rev. Christie Melby-Gibbons, an ordained pastor of the Moravian Church and the executive director of Tricklebee, has

meal, and when she’s done, she cleans up her food and just gets right back to it.” The café has a unique way of doing business. A person contributes what they can afford for their meal. Some may pay nothing at all and volunteer as their payment; some may pay the suggested price of $5.69 to $6.46, and others may pay far more to cover the cost of someone else’s meal, a way of “paying it forward.” The restaurant is a pleasant, sunny place that attracts customers and volunteers as soon as the door is unlocked for the day. It’s open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays, and the offerings are different every day. There’s also a Thursday night meal at 6 p.m. that consists of soup and bread. Among Rothe’s customers recently were Lindsay Galan-Skinner and her mother, Cheryl Galan, who live in the neighborhood. “I love supporting the community,” Cheryl Galan said. “We come here about once a month.”

been impressed by Rothe’s dedication and work ethic. She and her husband, David, founded the café in 2016. The goal of the nonprofit restaurant is to bring healthful food to the neighborhood at a reasonable cost. Melby-Gibbons described Rothe as “a very sweet person and very competent. Whatever you ask of her, she does it, and she does it well. She comes in every other week for long stretches of time from 9 to 1 p.m., which is great. “She’s just really happy to see people, especially when it’s a lot of folks she knows from church or the neighborhood. She’s all for giving people hugs,” the pastor said. Her daughter said: “It’s “She’s always kind of at the good food, has a good vibe ready. Each volunteer gets a and it’s a good mission.”
