LoveKindness
By: Michael S. Robertson Special to the Milwaukee Times
Love Kindness Challenge winner: Sis. Charlene Golden In our last column we introduced the Love Kindness Challenge and we are waiting to receive your ideas regarding how we can make Milwaukee into a kinder city. We had previously requested nominations for people who have demonstrated kindness. Olivia Williams submitted this essay to nominate Sis. Charlene Golden, a member of Community Baptist Church. Sis. Charlene Golden by Olivia Williams When it is the end of church and we are about to leave there is always a nice lady there to give you kisses and hugs. Do you know who that is? If you don’t know who it is I am about to tell you. It is Sis. Golden. A lady so special and so nice. When you see Sis. Golden your day will become cheerful.

at the back of the church but I say that she needs to come up so she can see all of our faces. We always see her with her red lipstick which means red kisses. She is always wearing high heels so that means she is going to be high. But she doesn’t need all of that stuff, just be yourself. Sis. Golden never changWhen you go out to eat es a thing about you. When with her there is always a top- you have a person around ic and laughable moments. I like her, you can’t get away. see Sis. Golden always sitting Thank you for being so nice
Congratulations go out to Sis. Charlene Golden, our November Love Kindness winner. Her kindness resulted in her receiving this nomination. What do you want to have written about you? That is an important question because it is how you treat others that determines who you really are. Do you Love Kindness? What might it take for you to realize that how you treat others is how you will be remembered? Please send in your stories regarding kindness so we can share them with others. We often derive our greatest satisfaction by doing kind deeds for others, but we also enjoy being treated kindly. Have you attempted to do a specific act of kindness today? If so, how did doing this affect your relationships with others and how did it make you feel? During this hectic time when so many are rushing
We realize that to Love Kindness takes time and courage. However, we can agree that this will be a better community and nation if we raised up in meaningful ways those among us who are kind. So let us begin today to share what is really important and by doing this make Milwaukee a better city. Please Email your kindness stories, ideas, nominations and essays to, miltimes@gmail.com or mail them to the Milwaukee Times, 1936 N. Martin Luther King Drive, Milwaukee, WI 53212. The opinions expressed in this editorial are those of the writer and not of the Milwaukee Times Weekly Newspaper or NCON Communication, its staff or management. Bible Scripture for the week from The Book of Psalms O Lord, how long will you forget me? Forever? How long will you look the other way? How long must I struggle with anguish in my soul, with sorrow in my heart every day? How long will my enemy have the upper hand? Turn and answer me, O Lord my God! Restore the sparkle to my eyes, or I will die. Don’t let my enemies gloat, saying, “We have defeated him!” Don’t let them rejoice at my downfall. But I trust in your unfailing love. I will rejoice because you have rescued me. I will sing to the Lord because he is good to me. - Psalm 13 Holy Bible, New Living Translation

Thursday, December 24: The Tennessee state legislature enacted the first, albeit ambiguous law, requiring segregated railroad cars for travel in 1881. Prior to that time some railroad companies enforced segregation or restricted blacks to one of the smoking cars, but historians generally cite this act as the beginning of the so-called ‘Jim Crow Era’ of state-enforced racial segregation. Friday, December 25: On Christmas Day in 1875, Charles Caldwell, a blacksmith and former Mississippi state legislator, left his home to meet a white friend, Buck Cabell, for a drink. Cabell had not previously been connected to white resistance groups, but what followed suggested he was not the friend Caldwell believed him to be. Caldwell was expected to testify to voter fraud and intimidation in an upcoming trial. The two men sat in a cellar and raised their glasses to each other, according to an account the Hutchins Center for African & African American Research. The sound of the glasses clinking was apparently a signal for a marksman waiting outside the cellar window, who shot Caldwell in the back of the head. Margaret Ann Caldwell later reported to Senate investigators her husband’s dying words, told to her by a witness: “Remember when you kill me you kill a gentleman and a brave man. Never say you killed a coward” (Lemann, 158). His body was then riddled with bullets. Saturday, December 26: Heavyweight boxer Jack Johnson becomes the first African American World Heavyweight Boxing Champion in 1908. Amid much controversy, he would successfully defend his title for the next seven years. Sunday, December 27: With the United States entry into World War II just weeks earlier, Dr. Charles R. Drew, who pioneered the transportation and long-term storage of blood plasma, established a “Blood for Britain” clinic in New York City in 1941. Monday, December 28: In 1977 Karen Farmer becomes the first known black member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, a prestigious, lineage-based membership service organization for women who are directly descended from a person involved in United States’ independence. Tuesday, December 29: Dr. Charles Clifton Weaver, an economist, academic, and political administrator; was born on this day in 1907. In 1966, he became the first black to serve in a Presidential Cabinet when President Lyndon Johnson appointed his he served as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development in 1966. Wednesday, December30 : Eldrick Tont “Tiger” Woods, arguably the most successful professional golfer of all time, is born in 1975. In addition to being one of the highest-paid athletes in the world for several years during an earlier era of his career, Woods also shattered racial stereotypes at some of the most exclusive private golf clubs in the South.
