Five healthy New Year’s resolutions that are easy to keep Setting a New Year's resolution is the easy part—it's sticking to one that is actually hard. Experts agree that people make resolutions with the best of intentions, but often inadvertently set themselves up for failure. "Change is hard. We are creatures of habit," said June Kloubec, Ph.D., a professor in the department of nutrition and exercise science at Bastyr University. To set yourself up for success: Write down your goals, share them with someone to help keep yourself accountable, and make sure they are as specific and achievable as possible. Rome wasn't built in a day, people. The most important thing: making sure your goals are actually rea-

sonable. Here are five small but meaningful changes you could think about making. 1. Eat mindfully. The idea behind mindful eating is pretty basic: If you take the time to truly savor what you are eating, without distractions, then your body will tell you when you're full and what it's craving. The hope is that mindful eating can lead you to a balanced, healthy diet that also includes your favorite treats. "If you pay attention to your food you are psychologically more satisfied by it," said Dr. David Cox, chief medical officer at mindful meditation app Headspace. 2. Go to sleep—and wake up—at the same time. “People focus on getting

enough sleep and that’s important, but a lot of people don’t emphasize the importance of a consistent sleep/ wake schedule,” said Rachel Salas, M.D., an associate professor of neurology at Johns Hopkins Medicine specializing in sleep medicine. Try putting yourself on a regular sleep schedule, and see how it makes you feel. 3. Find workouts that will help you achieve your goals. First, narrow down what it is you want to achieve at the gym, whether that's building muscle, increasing flexibility, or burning fat. Then try workouts that are aligned with your goals—and that you enjoy, so you’re more likely to keep coming back. 4. Cut down on sugar.

as much of it as you once thought," said Chelsea Elkin, M.S., R.D., C.D.N. "And it doesn’t have to be complicated. 5. Drink a bit more water. If you want to up your water intake, try keeping a water bottle at your desk, drinking a glass before starting each meal, or sipping some H20 when you’re feeling peckish (experts say that we often confuse hunger and thirst). And if you don't know how much water you should be drinking each day, the suggested amount is at least 64 ounces daily.

It turns out that the average American consumes over 77 pounds of sugar or sweetener each year, even though eating too much of it increases your risk of heart disease, obesity, and type 2 diabetes. Think about evaluating how much sugar you actually consume, and if it's a lot, take steps to cut back a bit. "Cutting back on sugar is a gradual process and doesn’t happen overnight; but once you start to cut back on it, you’ll realize you don’t need

Diabetes and your feet: What you must know There is no doubt that diabetes is a global epidemic of epic proportions–especially among people of color. Diabetes, or hyperglycemia, is high blood glucose. According to the Center for Disease Control, 13.2 percent and 12.2 percent of African Americans women and men respectively worldwide have the second highest incidence of diabetes. American Indians lead among all racial groups with 15.3 percent of American Indian women being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Also by 2050, 1 in 3 people will have type 2 if the current trends continue. Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes and is triggered by a combination of unchangeable factors, such as family history and race, and controllable factors, such as obesity and inactivity, according to the Mayo Clinic. It’s also the seventh leading cause of death in the United States, according to 2007 data, and is the leading cause of leg and foot amputations, kidney failure and new cases of blindness in adults under age 75, according to the CDC. People are living longer and an aging population and the growth of minority populations are expected to add to the disease’s prevalence. Because of that, unfortunately, African Americans, Latinos, Native Americans and Asians and Pacific Islanders are also at high risk of developing diabetes. Advances in medicine, which may help people with the disease live longer, and better detection of diabetes are other reasons why its prevalence could dramatically increase by 2050. Right now, 24 million Americans have Type 2 diabetes, but a quarter of them don’t know it, according to the CDC. Diabetes when uncontrolled can be problematic. If blood sugar levels are not

normalized in a diabetic, the body may have trouble fending off infections due to decreased functioning of the immune system. This can affect the feet in particular due to peripheral artery disease (lack of circulation) and peripheral neuropathy (loss of feeling). As a result of diabetes, the feet may become susceptible to a slew of problems, such as ulcers and wounds that do not heal properly, fungal infections, ingrown or brittle toenails, corns, calluses, hammertoes, athlete’s foot, and cracked or dry skin. Gangrene, or dead tissue, can develop, causing bacterial infections that may result in amputation of the affected areas. Even everyday activities such as walking can cause issues in the feet of a diabetic, as the bones, joints, and skin are affected by the condition. For the diabetic, proper and thorough foot care is imperative. Diabetics should check their feet daily for early detection of foot problems or injuries. Here are proper foot care suggestions for diabetics to follow: 1. Keep feet clean, warm, and dry (thoroughly dry between toes) 2. Wear comfortable shoes and do not wear the same pair every day (look for roomy toe boxes, leather uppers, and shoes that do not pinch, rub, or cause pressure; avoid stiff shoes and gradually break-in new footwear) 3. Always wear clean, dry socks without tears or irritating seams (thin cotton is absorbent and helps keep feet dry) 4. Do not leave feet exposed or unprotected (sleep in loose socks; do not wear flip flops or sandals; do not go barefoot)

cross feet or legs when sitting) 7. Treat the feet gently (pat dry; avoid cutting or tearing the skin) 8. Carefully shape toenails straight across with an emery board (avoid ingrown toenails) if you have feeling in your feet 9. Do not use overthe-counter foot prod5. Never expose feet to ucts such as antiseptic heat or high water tempera- solutions, plasters, tapes, tures (burns can occur due to or anything sticky (they can loss of feeling) damage the skin and lead to 6. Maintain better foot wounds) circulation (do not smoke; 10. Use moisturizer to keep avoid stockings or socks with skin supple (do not leave extight elastic bands; do not cess moisturizer between

toes) 11. Do not treat corns or calluses at home by self-removal with sharp instruments or perform “bathroom surgery”; see a doctor for care It is important that diabetics seek podiatric care on a regular basis to prevent foot problems that can easily get out of control. A podiatrist will ensure proper foot care, from maintenance to the treatment of any developing problems. Any foot problem should be immediately addressed in a diabetic to avoid serious complications.
