Milwaukee Urban League 58th Annual Equal Opportunity Day Luncheon

Photos by Yvonne Kemp

On Wednesday, December 13, 2017, The Milwaukee Urban League hosted its 58th Annual Equal Opportunity Day Luncheon at the Pfister Hotel, 424 E. Wisconsin Ave. The Equal Opportunity Day Luncheon is a significant event, not only because it helps to reinforce the importance of diversity and equal opportunity, but it also generates funds which help support the League's work in education, employment, economic development and civic engagement. This year's keynote speaker was Fox News contributor and best selling author Juan Williams (lower right photo, left). In addition, a number of Economic Impact and Visionary awards were presented to Alderwoman Milele Coggs; Operation Dream Founder Rodney Bourrage, Sr; and African American Leadership Program Founder Jeanette Mitchell, Ph.D. Pictured at the event are Milwaukee Urban League president and CEO Dr. Eve M. Hall (lower right photo, right) and the staff of the Milwaukee Urban League (upper photo).

Voice of the Fatherless Child brings Christmas cheer to single parent families in need Saturday, December 9, 2017, marked the 10th annual "Voice of the Fatherless Child's Single Parent Christmas," which has been co-sponsored by Home Depot for the past nine years. Home Depot employees and Voice of the Fatherless Child staff and family joined together to go into the homes of 10 families to decorate the home, put up and decorate a live tree, and pass out gifts to the families. Other long-time sponsors of Voice of the Fatherless Child are Anthem Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Boston Store, Steinhafel's Furniture, Church Women United, and Hupy and Abraham S.C. “I’ve seen a number of organizations give out a gift and I commend them because they reach a lot of people, but I want a person to have that Christmas experience with the live tree, the decorations, the gifts — it’s something that they’ll always remember,” said Monte Mabra, Voice of the Fatherless Child founder. Being Frank

By: Frank James Special to the Milwaukee Times

The New Year means a new opportunity The New Year is upon us. 2018 is here. 2017 has come and gone. Many people will use the changing of the year to make resolutions. Others will simply celebrate on January 1, then return to the

ways of old. If there is going to be any possibility for change in the USA, people have to seek new opportunity in 2018. People in the USA should seek new opportunities

for themselves. New opportunity often leads to positive interactions on every level of life. Too often we hold on to people and situations that are not in our best interest. Use January to look at the state of your life. Are there situations that can be shed which would lead to better living? In many cases, people are staying in situations that are not conducive to their growth. It could be a dead-end job or a relationship. It is a new year; do not be afraid to step away from the past. There is something about relationships that blind people. We often stay with people who do not share the same goals or vision. This leads to misery. This situation not only relates to romantic relationships, but friendships, also. There is nothing wrong with outgrowing people. There is nothing wrong with admitting a love interest has become stagnant and

walking away. If your goal is to grow and advance, then you should be surrounded by people who want to grow, also. We have to let go of the safety net of complacency if we want to grow in life. If you are going to advance in 2018, you have to conquer fear. It is fear that keeps us going back to situations not conducive to us. We become scared at the prospect of walking away from what we know. It takes a bold person to turn their back on everything they know and strike out in a new direction. Fear of the unknown keeps us rooted in mediocrity and misery. If you can walk away from people or take a new job, even change your thoughts in 2018, you have won. People in the USA have nothing to lose and everything to gain by doing something to advance their situation. How can a man lose when he is working to make himself better? How can a woman lose when she is striving to be the best she can be? Losing comes from staying and holding onto people and situations past their expiration date. Twenty-eighteen is a new year full of new opportunity to excel in anything you can

imagine. If you want to change jobs, then do it. If you want to get a new set of friends, then go for it. There is nothing holding you back but yourself, and possibly, fear. In many instances, it is fear of success. People sometimes fear being successful because they have to move on and leave what they know. Trust me, I know this fear too well. 2018 is your chance to be what you want to be. Use January to revamp and finetune your outlook. Once you walk away from a situation or person, you may discover that you do not want to go back. The door to misery and mediocrity from 2017 may have closed. If this happens, smile and keep walking forward. UR HISTORY

AN EXPLORATION OF OUR LIVES AND LEGACIES

Strive for a better life through the 7 principles of Kwanzaa By Jackie Warren-Moore author of "Where I Come From" Our family celebrates Kwanzaa, the holiday that honors African American people and our history. Although Kwanzaa was created in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga for African Americans, the principles apply to us all, regardless of color. A core part of the holiday is the Nguzu Saba, the seven moral principles by which to model your life. Kwanzaa is a seven-day holiday; each is dedicated to one of the principles. Each family celebrates Kwanzaa in the way that best fits them. One component of the way our family celebrates it is with a discussion of the day's principle. We speak about its meaning, and ask, was it adhered to in the past year? How was it applied? What could we do to make it better in this coming year? The names of the principles are in the African language Swahili. In the book Kwanzaa, by A.P. Porter, Karenga describes the

The seven Kwanzaa candles represent the Nguzu Saba (seven principles): Umoja, Kujichagulia, Ujima, Ujamaa, Nia, Kuumba and Imani. Nguzu Saba: Umoja (unity) means staying together. Kujichagulia (self-determination) urges us to define ourselves and speak for ourselves. Ujima (collective work and responsibility) means working together and helping each other. Ujamaa (cooperative economics) means buying from each other, locally. Nia (purpose) means making our people as great as they

can be. Kuumba (creativity) means thinking of ways to make our community better. Imani (faith) means believing in ourselves and the worth of all people. As we open the season of Kwanzaa, I am looking at what is going on around me. This past year has been a harsh one. I believe we are in the midst of a revolution. Revolution, as defined by

Merriam Webster's Collegiate Dictionary: "Activity or movement designed to effect fundamental changes in the socioeconomic situation." I see Umoja becoming a reality. People all over the country are rising up, standing up and speaking out about issues important to them. Women all over the country have embraced Kujichagulia (self-determination), saying clearly who we are and what we are no longer willing to quietly accept. I'm watching Ujima (collective work and responsibility) unfold as ordinary folk offer funds and support for people who have survived natural disasters in Texas, Puerto Rico and California. Closer to home, it is wonderful to behold Ujima as Lisa Saulle speaks about the bravery and humility of a neighbor who rushed to save her while she and her dog were in the frigid water of the Seneca River. Ujima celebrates the skill of the Air 1 helicopter pilot who pulled her from the water. Ujima is the dedication and everyday commitment of the Plainville Fire Department who

assisted in the rescue. It is Nia (purpose) in action when we make the time to do our duty to work and vote for candidates we believe will carefully consider real-life issues of real-life people and act in the best interest of people, not the party. Kuumba (creativity) is the courage and foresight of Syracuse Mayor-elect Ben Walsh to solicit the engagement and ideas of the community, whether they voted for him or not. Finally, as Karenga says: "To believe with all our hearts in our people, our parents, our teachers, our leaders, and the righteousness and victory of the struggle." This Kwanzaa, this season brings new challenges. Call me naive, but I strongly believe our collective community is up to the task. As Karenga urges: "May we live by The Nguzu Saba. May the year's end meet us all laughing and stronger. And at the end of next year may more of us sit together. May we achieve a better life." Happy Kwanzaa to us all!

Kwanzaa: What is it and why is it celebrated? Opalanga Pugh lights the seven candles of Kwanzaa in her home.

You don't have to be black to understand or appreciate the history behind Kwanzaa. Here are the top things non-Kwanzaa celebrators should know. Kwa ... nz.. a? While the holiday is pronounced "kwahn-zuh," it is spelled either Kwanzaa or Kwanza. The name stems from the Swahili phrase "matunda ya kwanza," which means "first fruits." They are given to share values and beliefs around African American heritage.

Setting a New Year's resolution is the easy part—it's sticking to one that is actually hard. Experts agree that people make resolutions with the best of intentions, but often inadvertently set themselves up for failure. "Change is hard. We are creatures of habit," said June Kloubec, Ph.D., a professor in the department of nutrition and exercise science at Bastyr University,. To set yourself up for success: Write down your goals, share them with someone to help keep yourself accountable, and make sure they are as specific and achievable as possible. The top 3 financial resolutions for 2018 and how to succeed at them The year 2017 is winding down, so it's time to do what many of us do late in each year: Make New Year's resolutions! Researchers have found that about half of the population makes these vows -- and, sadly, that less than 10 percent of resolutions are successful. Financial New Year's resolutions are extremely common. If you're vowing to be better about money in the coming year, here are some tips to help you succeed. Top New Year's resolutions So what, exactly, are the most common resolutions? Here's a list from a year ago, via iQuanti and Google data: Resolution for 2017 and how did they increase (decrease) from 2016: • Get healthy - 13 percent • Get organized - 7.4 percent • Live life to the fullest 13 percent • Learn new hobbies 4.7 percent • Spend less/save more 17.5 percent • Travel - 0.8 percent • Read more - 5.6 percent Interestingly, the financial resolution, while only in fifth place, nevertheless saw the biggest increase in interest. Let's take a closer look at Americans' financial goals. Here, from the folks at lendedu.com, are the three top financial resolutions that people make: • 2 percent: Save more money • 5 percent: Pay off debt • 3 percent: Spend less money They're all more related than you might think at first. If you can spend less, then you'll be able to save more -- and that can help you pay off debt. How to succeed at New Year's resolutions There's a good chance that at least one or two of the above are your own goals, too, so here's a look at how you might succeed at them. First of all, there are some tips that apply to most resolutions, whether financial or not. A good rule of thumb is to set goals that fit the "S.M.A.R.T." mnemonic device, meaning that they are specific, measurable, achievable, results-focused, and time-bound. For example, just vowing to exercise more is too general. Instead, you might vow to exercise three times a week all year long, spending half an hour on weight machines at the gym or walking briskly for 45 minutes. Other recommendations include sharing your goals with others to make yourself more accountable to them and keeping track of progress in order to remain motivated. Remember, too, that if you fail at some point, you needn't give up entirely

This isn’t a book that explains the mania for sneakers – if you don’t get it, don’t get this book – but instead, it’s a talk-to-the-tribe kind of thing. Each of the

secret worth keeping. Sometimes, you wore the shoes even though there’s a certain amount of danger in it. And sometimes, you “vaulted” them in the hopes that they might someday pay for a year of college. Yes, that’s where the price of sneakers can go. Up. Who knew? But those shoes don’t make themselves. Someone’s put their heart deep into designing those kicks, possibly in collaboration with a skater, an athlete, an artist, or a sick kid. Someone knew that the shoes make the outfit, and created accordingly. Those designers could tell you a thing or two: they tell tales of sneaking fans in one door and out the other, for their safety. They remember a time when Hollywood came calling. They tell a tale of surprising a collector with his dream shoes, of growing up barefoot, of near-failures that sold millions of shoes, and of styles that elicit a “please don’t” when talk turns to revival.
